Everything you need to know about Kelingking Beach, the epic “T-rex” lookout beach on Nusa Penida. Discover the most epic viewpoint on the island for sunrise or sunset!

Those who’ve made the trip over to Nusa Penida from Bali are chasing more than just the nightlife and wild party scenes. Nusa Penida is in a league of its own when it comes to world-class beaches and epic viewpoints.

In this quick guide, I’ll outline everything you need to know about the best beach on Nusa Penida, Kelingking Beach. I’ll detail how to get here, what to expect and throw in a few photos from my trip.

Featured in: Best Things to do on Nusa Penida

About Kelingking Beach, The T-Rex Beach on Nusa Penida

Kelingking Beach is located on the southwest coast of Nusa Penida, just before other attractions like the Peguyangan Waterfall. Its steep, jungle-lined cliffs plummet down to rich, turquoise waters. It's truly one of the best viewpoints I've seen in Asia, and definitely one you should check out if you're visiting Nusa Penida.

While the views from the top are incredible, you can actually also descend down the steep, bamboo steps to the base of Kelingking Beach. Here, there's an epic cave and powerful shore-dumping waves.

Near the viewpoint, there are a few opportunistic stalls set up where you can purchase snacks, fuel (bottled), and water.

How to Get to Kelingking Beach

By far, the best way to get to Kelingking Beach and explore Nusa Penida is to rent your own motorbike. You can get these from your accommodation or the many rental shops at the harbour port.

A daily rental costs between 50,000 to 70,000 rupiah for a decent scooter.

Alternatively, if you'd like to save the hassle of bartering, you can book one in advance on this scooter booking website for 50,000 rupiah.

The journey by scooter is only about 25 minutes from the harbour. Below I've pinned the exact location to help you find your way.

Alternatively, if you'd rather see the island on a guided tour, then you can also do that. There are many different businesses running tours from Bali to Nusa Penida but when booking, you'll want to confirm a few things:

  • Ensure its a fast boat
  • Ensure all fees are paid upfront
  • Pick one with snorkelling at Crystal Bay, Broken Beach and a visit to Kelingking Beach!

To save you the trouble of searching and haggling, I've linked the best-rated and most bang-for-buck trip that includes a visit to Kelingking Beach below.

The Kelingking Beach T-Rex Viewpoint (Secret Point)

Once you arrive at Kelingking Beach, you'll undoubtedly be approached by fee collectors. I'm not a huge fan of paying for natural attractions but this is the standard in Nusa Penida. Also, if it helps the local economy then I'm happy to pay it.

You can walk down to the beautiful viewpoint from the large, cleared area where you can park your motorbike. Immediately, I'm sure you'll realize why this incredible lookout is known as the T-rex lookout. The headland wrapping around the beach looks exactly like a T-rex!

Update 2022: This viewpoint used to go by the name "Secret Point". However, Kelingking Beach is now probably the most famous viewpoint on Nusa Penida, and even in Indonesia– far from secret.

Kelingking Beach, T-rex viewpoint on Nusa Penida

From here, you can get great photos down the bamboo staircase. You'll often see some macaque monkeys chilling here and admiring the view too.

Update 2022: The photos you see of the old, rickety bamboo staircase has now been replaced with concrete steps. I don't know about you, but I certainly like the old rugged style better.

Walking the Stairs to Kelingking Beach

If you're game, take the steep and winding bamboo stairs all the way down to Kelingking Beach, probably my favorite beach on Nusa Penida!

Be warned though, the steps are a bit steep but easily doable if you take your time.

Once you're down on Kelingking Beach, make sure to check out the epic cave. The waves are can also get very large, with dangerous swells and rip tides. Only go in the water if you're very confident and you're sure that the sea conditions allow for it!

Update 2022: The steps are now much safer thanks to the concrete stairs and steep railing. There's no excuse not to head down now!

Accommodation: Where to Stay on Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida isn't a huge island, but there are several options to pick from when choosing where to stay. Below I've included my 3 picks for budget, mid-range, and luxury accommodation.

  • Luxury: Adiwana Warnakali Resort - This isn't the most expensive luxury resort on Nusa Penida but it's definitely one of the best! This resort is waterfront located with large, luxury suites and an incredibly included breakfast.
  • Mid-range: Jukung Cottage - This epic, beachside resort-style cottage retreat offers great bang for buck. It features a restaurant, an outdoor swimming pool, a bar, and a shared lounge.
  • Budget: Hostel Bukit Sangcure - This is the accommodation I chose in Nusa Penida. It's a cheap backpacker hostel that is close to the port and offers breakfast and bike rentals.

A detailed travel guide to Nusa Penida Island featuring 12 epic things to do on Nusa Penida! Explore the best Nusa Penida Island with this epic guide!

Looking for an adventure beyond the Bintangs and over-trodden market stalls in Bali– Nusa Penida island is where it’s at! This is by far, the best island off Bali for adventure travel. Nusa Penida is more rugged, wild, and in my opinion, generally just more beautiful than neighboring Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan.

In this island travel guide, I’ll let you in on the 12 best things to do on Nusa Penida, including the best places to visit, and some ideas on how to spend your time on the island.

Tip: I’ve also written independent articles to several of these Nusa Penida attractions and highlights, which include more photos and info about each. Furthermore, if you scroll down to the bottom of this post, you’ll find a detailed Nusa Penida travel guide with tips on everything from getting around to where to stay.

How to Get to Nusa Penida

Tip: If you're already in Nusa Penida and looking for things to do, skip this bit. If you're looking to get a cheap deal on the Nusa Penida ferry, read on or read the complete guide on how to get here.

The first thing you might be wondering is how to get to Nusa Penida island. There are ferries running from Sanur to Nusa Penida every day, which is 25 minute drive from Kuta on the coast of Bali.

What you want is the "fast boat", which is much quicker and safer (yes there've been a few capsizing events lately). The difference in cost is very marginal and definitely worth it!

Diamnod Beach, Nusa Penida

It used to be the case that getting to Nusa Penida was a bit hit and miss in terms of price. That's because it seems every single tour operator in the dog-eat-dog streets of Kuta and Seminyak was out to make a buck off your misfortune.

Luckily, you can now book the ferry to Nusa Penida from Bali online, guaranteeing you get the best rate. Best of all, you won't have to deal with the hassle of bartering! This also includes a transfer from your hotel to get around to the other side of Denpasar (Sanur ferry terminal).

Best Nusa Penida Trip from Bali (Includes the Top Things to do on the Island)

I'd recommend staying on Nusa Penida Island for at least a couple of days in order to experience all of the epic things to do! However, we don't all have the luxury of unlimited travel time.

So, if you're instead looking to tick off the Nusa Penida attractions on a big, adventure-filled day, then it might be a good idea to book an organized trip from Bali.

The best tour operator running trips from Bali to Nusa Penida is a local tour company called Four Elements. Their most popular day tour is the Nusa Penida Adventure Tour, which includes:

  • Fast boat transfers & all entrance fees
  • Hotel pickup/drop-off
  • All snorkeling equipment
  • Visit to Crystal Bay, Manta Ray snorkeling, Kelingking Beach lookout, Atuh Beach, Borken Beach, and Angels Billabong

Multi-day Nusa Penida Tour: if you want to spend more time on the island without the hassle of planning things yourself. Four Elements also runs a 2-day tour and an epic 3-day tour.

Things to do Nusa Penida Island

12 Epic Things to do on Nusa Penida Island

With some of the logistics out of the way, let's do a deep dive into this Nusa Penida travel guide featuring 12 things to do on the island.

1. Kelingking Beach

Starting with the best attraction isn't always the classiest of moves. But for me, I'm just so stoked about Kelingking Beach that I want to share it with you straight away.

Kelingking Beach, or "T-Rex" viewpoint is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful landscapes you'll find in Indonesia. This spot definitely does the rounds on social media but trust me, it's a spot you don't want to miss.

A tip for this one is to come early in the morning for the best light and fewer crowds. Also, if you're game, I'd definitely recommend making the steep descent down to Kelingking Beach, one of the wildest on Nusa Penida Island!

2. Thousand Island Viewpoint

Nusa Penida island is all about wild, exotic viewpoints and you can probably already guess that chasing these are some of the funnest things to do when visiting.

Thousand Island Viewpoint, also known as Pulau Seribu offers sweeping views of large outcrops soaring out of the turquoise blue water below.

You'll have to walk down a rather steep section to get to the best viewpoint here. At the base, you'll find some fences built to keep tourists safe from the sudden death drops ahead. This is a perfect place to sit, relax, and enjoy the incredible views over the Island of Nusa Penida!

3. Nusa Penida Tree House

If you're looking for instagrammable things to do on Nusa Penida, then you've probably already come across this particular treehouse online.

The Nusa Penida treehouse is located just a little up the road from the Thousand Island viewpoint. You can actually stay here for a night by booking online at Airbnb. When I visited, no one was around so I took the opportunity to snap some photos.

Nusa Penida Tree House

4. Snorkel With Manta Rays at Manta Bay

One of the most epic things to do on Nusa Penida island, and an activity that is advertised almost everywhere in Bali, is a snorkel with Manta Rays.

Nusa Penida seems to be a Manta Ray hub of sorts. You'll often see them from many of the viewpoints and cliffs around Nusa Penida. However, due to how steep the coastline is on the island, you might have a hard time getting down to the water to swim with Mantas.

For this reason, most people book a Manta Ray snorkeling trip at the appropriately named 'Manta Point'. If you're already staying on Nusa Penida, you can book this Manta Point snorkeling trip very cheaply online.

Alternatively, for those staying in Bali, you can also book a Nusa Penida Manta Ray snorkeling trip with a stop at Nusa Ceningan for 650,000.

5. Snorkeling At Crystal Bay Nusa Penida

By far, one of my favorite snorkeling spots on Nusa Penida is Crystal Bay. This beach is one of the closest swimming beaches to the main port, meaning it's easy to get here. The roads have recently been revamped in Nusa Penida, meaning they're not as hectic as they once were.

Book a motorbike: Here's the cheapest rate online (50,000 per day)

So, one recommendation for things to do on Nusa Penida is to rent a motorbike and ride over to Crystal Bay for snorkeling. It takes just 20 minutes to get here, and if you're blessed with good visibility, you're in for a treat!

CYRSTAL BAY NUSA PENIDA

6. Angel's Billabong

If you plan the tides right, Angel's Billabong is a beautiful, blue rocky tide pool for swimming. You'll find this spot right near Broken Beach and what you want to do is aim to visit at low tide.

If the low tide and sunset line up at around the same time, then this is definitely something that you'll want to do on Nusa Penida since it's one of the best spots for photos!

Angel's Billabong Rock pools at sunset, Nusa Penida

7. Broken beach

Broken Beach, or Pasih Uug Beach, is a rocky archway formed from a collapsed sea cave many years ago. The strong tides on Nusa Penida continue to sweep beautiful, turquoise water through the arch and into the void every day.

You'll find Broken Beach on the west side of the island, not too far from Crystal Bay. It also shares the same car park as the Angel's Billabong (above), meaning you'll get to tick off two Nusa Penida attractions in one go.

You can walk all the war around the exposed hole or simply take some photos of the archway near the edge.

8. Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach is my personal favorite beach on the island. What's unique about this particular east coast beach is that locals have carved out a spectacular stairway into the vertical cliff!

This opened up one of the most pristine beaches to everyone! If you look closely, you'll soon realize why it's named Diamond Beach. There are several large rocky outcrops on this section of the coast that are shaped exactly like diamonds.

There's a viewpoint at the top where you can hang out and admire the view over the crystal clear water and palm trees lining the shores. But, I definitely recommend making the steep descent down to Diamond Beach's shores. In my opinion this is one of the best beaches in Indonesia and visiting is easily one of the top things to do on Nusa Penida!

9. Peguyangan Waterfall

Peguyangan Waterfall, or Guyangan Waterfall, is located on the west side of Nusa Penida, closeby to other worthwhile attractions like Kelingking Beach. This spot isn't much of a waterfall in the conventional sense, but more of a natural spring.

Peguyangan Waterfall is famous for its blue, steel staircase leading down to the cliffside spring. You'll find a pipe here with redirected water that flows off the cliff into the Indian Ocean– hence the waterfall.

This spot is also a popular pilgrimage site and you'll find a shrine so make sure to bring a sarong.

10. Tembeling Beach

Tembeling Beach is an epic adventure fit for those looking to get a bit off the beaten path. You won't find any tour buses or large crowds here!

That's because the road down to Tembeling Beach is one of the steepest and sketchiest on the island. If you're confident on a motorbike, you can get down here to find an awesome forest and natural pools for swimming and cliff jumping.

11. The Pura Goa Giri Putri Temple

The Pura Goa Giri Putri is one of the best temples I've visited in Hindu Indonesia. This unique temple is actually within a large cave with several caverns!

You'll find this cave on the northeastern tip of Nusa Penida, approximately 25 minute ride from the port.

There's a donation fee to get in and you'll also need to bring a sarong. Alternatively, you can rent a sarong at the entrance for 50,000 rupiah.

The Pura Goa Giri Putri cave is situated halfway up a hillside. Once you're inside, you're free to explore, keeping in mind that locals come here to pray. If you continue further into the cave, there are smaller caverns with unique shrines.

Cave temple on Nusa Penida

12. Banah Cliffs Viewpoint

The last attraction on this Nusa Penida things-to-do list is the incredible Banah Cliffs viewpoint (Tanjung Banah).

The Banah Cliffs offer not one, but two epic viewpoints. You'll find this epic spot on the west coast, between Kelingking and Tembeling. The soaring cliff viewpoint spans out to the open sea, with incredible arched rock formations visible.

This is definitely one of the best viewpoint locations on Nusa Penida!

Where to Stay on Nusa Penida: Accommodation Guide

How to Get Around on Nusa Penida

If you're not booking the island highlights tour, and you'd rather explore the island yourself, then you'll want your own scooter. Motorbike is how most people get around on this island, locals and tourists alike. This is a good way to explore some of the remote parts of the island like Diamond Beach and Teletubbies Hill.

A good price for a scooter/motorbike rental on the island is between 50,000 to 70,000 rupiah. However, you'll likely have to barter down from as high as 15,000 before landing on a fair price.

Instead, I'd recommend just booking a scooter rental online, which guarantees you'll get the best rate of 50,000 rupiah per day.

Motorbike rental booking: Scooter for 50,000 per day (best rate)

While the roads have definitely improved over the past few years, the island is still notorious for bumpy, sketchy roads. Apparently, a lot of people crash when coming over from Bali because they're just used to dirt and gravel roads.

If you're still in the planning stages of your trip, I'd definitely suggest getting travel insurance. I never travel without it and have had my fair share of claims in the past. For adventure destinations like Nusa Penida island, you're going to want World Nomad's insurance.

This offers the best coverage and I swear by them for claims.

Best Time to Visit Nusa Penida

The great thing about Bali and the Nusa Islands is that you can honestly visit at any time of the year and still have a great time. In saying that, the best time to visit Nusa Penida falls between the months of May to September. This is the dry season, which obviously results in less rain and cooler weather than in the rainy season.

Whenever you visit though, it'll be swimming weather, so don't stress if you're visiting in the off-season or shoulders. Actually, you might enjoy it more due to the lack of crowds!

Is Nusa Penida Worth Visiting?

I'm sure you already know the answer to this question– of course Nusa Penida is worth visiting, there's just so much to do here, especially for adventure travelers! In fact, if I had to make a call, I'd definitely choose this island over Bali and the other Nusa Islands too for that matter!

More Travel Tips for Visiting Nusa Penida Island

Wrapping up this ultimate travel guide to Nusa Penida featuring the 12 best things to do is this quick rundown of things you'll want to know. They're more so tips, and I've touched on a few of these already, this one's for the skim-readers!

  • To get to Nusa Penida, book a fast-ferry from Bali
  • The best way to get around is by scooter, don't pay more than 70,000
  • There's a 10,000 rupiah "entrance fee" payable at each attraction. A local will come and collect it
  • Nusa Penida has a pretty bad plastic pollution problem. Do your part by picking up small pieces of trash on your adventures. No, you won't clean it all, but your actions will be noticed and followed
  • Swimming at many of the beaches can be dangerous in big swell
  • If you've got time, go check out neighboring Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan as well!

Crystal Bay Nusa Penida is located on the northwest end of the island and is one of the most popular beaches. That’s because here, you’ll find incredible snorkeling and scuba diving, as well as a palm-tree-lined white-sand beach to soak up the rays.

In this quick guide, I’ll outline everything you need to know about visiting Crystal Beach Nusa Penida. I’ll also add in some options for how to get here with some above and underwater photos from my visit.

About Crystal Bay Nusa Penida

This incredible sheltered cove is world-famous in the dive scene as THE place to spot Mola Mola (the giant oceanic sunfish). If you're lucky enough to be visiting Crystal Bay Nusa Penida in the Mola Mola season (August to October) then I highly recommend booking a dive!

Even if you're not into scuba diving, this beach is certainly worth visiting. It's close to the main port town of Toya Pakeh, making it an excellent option for a day trip or sunset location when staying on the island.

Crystal Bay Nusa Penida: What to Expect

Once you arrive at Crystal Bay, you'll undoubtedly spot a few tourists sprawled out on the sandy shores. You can either join them or rent some snorkel gear from one of the guys working at the small Bali-style beach bars.

In the middle of the cove at Crystal Bay is a small, rocky island. We swam out to this island to check it out.

Also, if you take the slightly worn trails on the left side of the cove (looking out to sea), you can climb up to a vantage point that gives you a good view of the beach and island.

Unfortunately, my camera card was corrupted from this trip so I lost my great photos of Crystal Bay! Luckily I still have some phone and underwater shots from this spot!

A complete travel guide to Tembeling Beach forest and natural pools on Nusa Penida, Indonesia

Tembeling Beach is a hidden beach off the regular tourist beat in Nusa Penida. Getting To Tembeling Nusa Penida is an adventure in itself, riding through slightly sketchy roads through beautiful forest and past several amazing natural pools along the way.

In this guide, I’ll detail everything you need to know about Tembeling Nusa Penida, including how to get here through the forest, information about the natural pools, and the beach itself.

TEMBELING BEACH NATURAL POOLS NUSA PENIDA

About Tembeling Nusa Penida

If you're looking for an epic forest adventure with overhead, vine-swinging monkeys and steep dirt tracks down to off-the-beaten-path swimming spots in Nusa Penida, definitely check out Tembeling Beach.

This beach is located on the West Coast of Nusa Penida near Bali. You'll find it between other worthwhile attractions like Kelingking Beach and Peguyangan Waterfall.

You won't find any tourist buses or large groups visiting this spot, meaning you'll likely get to enjoy the "secret" white sand beach, unique Tembeling forests, natural pools, limestone caves, and some awesome cliff jumps.

With that said, getting here is a bit of a wild ride! I definitely wouldn't advise it if you're not super comfortable riding motorbikes off-road.

How To Get To Tembeling Beach on Nusa Penida

The only way to get to Tembeling Beach on Nusa Penida is to rent your own motorbike. You can get these from your accommodation or the many rental shops at the harbor port.

A daily rental costs between 50,000 to 70,000 rupiah for a decent scooter.

Alternatively, if you'd like to save the hassle of bartering, you can book one in advance on this website for 50,000 rupiah.

Book the cheap ferry from Bali online: Sanur (Bali) Ferry Transfer (fast-boat)

What you'll want to do is head to the pin below. If you just type in "Tembeling Beach" into Google Maps, you'll soon realize that it's not that straightforward.

Once you arrive at the pin, you'll notice a small warung and hut. From here, you'll begin the very steep descent down to Tembeling Beach. Note that this road is eroded, bumpy, steep, and very narrow. Again, if you're not confident, leave your bike at the start of this road and walk down.

Hike or Motorbike to Tembeling?

After a couple of years of backpacking in Asia, I'd still say that this road is one of the more "hectic" scooter missions I've been on. Apparently, there are a lot of motorbike accidents that happen on Nusa Penida, and this particular spot is a good example of why.

Again, I don't want to paint the wrong picture and maybe I'm being a little bit dramatic. But I'm writing this because I know that many people come to Bali and Nusa Penida to learn how to ride scooters. This definitely isn't the spot for that!

Haylea and I went down together on the bike but she had to get off to walk some of the steep sections a few times. I wouldn't recommend trying two people on the bike down to Tembeling Beach through the forest tracks!

Walking down instead takes about 30 minutes. So, if you're not confident, leave your bike at the top and enjoy the hike instead!

Alternatively, you might be lucky to meet a group of locals sitting at the hut at the turn-off. These opportunistic characters will be quick to offer you a return trip on a bike for 50,000 rupiah each.

Alternative: Best of Nusa Penida from Bali

While Nusa Penida is definitely smaller in Bali, I wouldn’t say it’s possible to check out all the attractions in a single day.

Therefore, if you’re only planning a day trip from Bali, you’ll want the best bang-for-time possible.

Unfortunately, there aren't any trips that include a visit to Tembeling Beach, forest, and natural pools. However, if you're going to pick one, I'd suggest the one below, which visits Broken Beach, Crystal Bay and Kelingking, with an included fast-boat transfer.

Eventually, you'll reach the bottom scooter car park for Tembeling Beach, forest and natural pools on Nusa Penida. Unlike many of the popular attractions on the island, you don't have to pay to leave your bike here, nor an entrance fee!

From this point on, it's a pleasant walk down concrete steps through the Tembeling Beach forest. You'll pass a couple of blue lagoons and natural pools along the way.

It's possible to cliff-jump into these pools. The larger jump is about 5 metres, and the pool below is deep enough not to touch. Just make sure to always do a depth-check first.

The main attraction at Tembeling Nusa Penida is the large, man-made blue pool fed by a flow of directed water. You'll find this natural pool just before Tembeling Beach. When we visited, we shared the entire place with one local character who seemed to really be enjoying his shower.

Where to Stay on Nusa Penida

Find out everything you need to know about Peguyangan Waterfall (Guyangan Waterfall) on Nusa Penida, Bali.

Peguyangan Waterfall is a special place and a waterfall that is quite unique in a few different ways. Firstly, this waterfall is actually fed by a pipe system running down the cliff face, where it pours into the Indian Ocean. The journey to reach Peguyangan Waterfall is also unique, requiring a steep descent down an iconic blue stairway.

Also, Peguyangan Waterfall is recognized as a sacred water temple, serving as a pilgrimage site for Hindus.

In this quick guide, I’ll outline everything you need to know about visiting Peguyangan Waterfall on Nusa Penida. I’ll also include photos from my visit so you know what to expect.

Blue Staircase Nusa Penida

Where Is Peguyangan Waterfall?

Peguyangan Waterfall is located on the west side of Nusa Penida, closeby to other worthwhile attractions like Kelingking Beach. You'll find the blue stairway down to the waterfall at top of a towering cliff.

I've pinned the exact location below to help you find it. Note the name of the waterfall is actually Guyangan Waterfall on Google.

  • Google Maps Pin: "Guyangan Waterfall Nusa Penida"

How to Get to Peguyangan Waterfall

The best way to get to Peguyangan Waterfall and check out the rest of the highlights on Nusa Penida is to rent your own motorbike.

You can get these from your accommodation or the many rental shops at the harbor port. A daily rental costs between 50,000 to 70,000 rupiah for a decent scooter.

Alternatively, if you’d like to save the hassle of bartering, you can book one in advance on this website for 50,000 rupiah.

Once you've got your set of wheels, follow the route to the pin above. Note that the roads are a bit sketchy on Nusa Penida, but they've definitely improved in the past couple of years.

If you're planning on exploring the island, it makes sense to check out Kelingking Beach for sunrise, then drive down to some of the other highlights on the West Coast like Tembaling Beach, Teletubbies Hill, and Sekartaji Cliffs before returning to Peguyangan Waterfall on the return for sunset.

Tip: Bring a sarong if you have one. Peguyangan Waterfall is a sacred water temple. If you forget, you can "hire" one down at the waterfall for 5000-10,000 rupiah.

There are many different businesses running tours from Bali to Nusa Penida which have these itineraries down-pat. But, when booking, you'll want to confirm a few things:

To save you the trouble of searching and haggling, I've linked the best-rated and most bang-for-buck trip that includes a visit to Kelingking Beach below.

The Blue Stairway to Peguyangan Waterfall

Once you arrive at the pinned location above, you'll find a cleared area to leave your bike. As with most of the things to do on Nusa Penida, you'll need to pay the 10,000 rupiah fee to park your bike.

You'll see a sign an obvious route down to Peguyangan Waterfall down that iconic blue stairway.

This stairway is quite steep but shouldn't be much of a problem for most. It took us roughly 15 minutes to reach the bottom, snapping some photos along the way.

The Peguyangan Waterfall

If you were expecting a towering waterfall like those found in neighboring Bali, you might be a little disappointed. The Peguyangan Waterfall is definitely not that.

However, Peguyangan Waterfall, which locals refer to as Mata Air Peguyangan, is actually not considered a "waterfall", but a sacred spring.

You'll notice a shrine at the base, with a large pipe redirecting the flow of water down the steep cliff face. If you're lucky, you might get to meet some locals who've made the pilgrimage down to the site.

Peguyangan Infinity Pool

Besides the photo-worthy blue stairway, perhaps the most alluring aspect of Peguyangan Waterfall is the awesome infinity pool. You'll find this further on past the shrine.

This pool is man-made and rests under an overhanging rock face. It's a great place to relax and cool off. On days with big swell, you can witness huge waves break and crash over the back of the pool.

We relaxed in the pool for a good hour, monkeying around with a few local kids who seemed to enjoy playing with my camera. The hardest part of the day wasn't the climb back up, but trying to keep my DSLR dry!

A complete guide to the incredible Diamond Beach on Nusa Penida Island off Bali, Indonesia. One of the most beautiful beaches on Nusa Penida!

I think it’s safe to say that Nusa Penida has some of the most beautiful and dramatic coastal vistas and beaches in Indonesia. If you’re looking to see the cream of the crop on Nusa Penida, definitely make your way to Diamond Beach.

In this guide, I’ll outline everything you need to know about Diamond Beach Nusa Penida. I’ll cover your options for how to get here, what to expect, and include some photos from my trip.

Featured in: Best Things to do on Nusa Penida

About Diamond Beach on Nusa Penida

The cliff lookout over Diamond Beach has long been a popular on Nusa Penida. However, a few years back, local developers carved an epic stairway straight into the cliff-face, opening up this incredible beach to everyone!

The striking, white-sand beach below is breathaking when juxtaposed to the turquoise waters and the white, jungle-covered cliffs above.

You’ll find Diamond Beach located on the south-east side of Nusa Penida. There are many other beautiful attractions nearby including Atuh Beach, the Thousand Island Viewpoint and of course, that Instagram-famous beach house on the cliff.

How to Get to Diamond Beach

In my opinion, the best way to get to Diamond Beach and the rest of the highlights on Nusa Penida is to rent your own motorbike.

You can get these from your accommodation or the many rental shops at the harbor port. A daily rental costs between 50,000 to 70,000 rupiah for a decent scooter.

Alternatively, if you’d like to save the hassle of bartering, you can book one in advance on this website for 50,000 rupiah.

The journey by motorbike to Diamond Beach from the main port in Nusa Penida takes about 30 minutes. However, while the roads have improved on Nusa Penida in recent years, the East side of the island still has some sketchy stretches so you’ll want to be confident on a motorbike.

Alternative: Best of Nusa Penida From Bali

Find yourself in Bali and you’d rather skip the motorbike rental to see the best Nusa Penida highlights?

While Nusa Penida is a lot smaller than neighboring Bali, it is a bit too big to cover all the epic highlights in a single day. If you’re set on seeing the dramatic Nusa Penida east coastline with attractions such as Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, and the Thousand Island Viewpoint, then consider this Nusa Penida East Tour running from Bali.

Otherwise, check out the Best of Nusa Penida Tour which includes a boat transfer and highlights like Kelingking Beach, Crystal Bay, and the incredible Broken Beach & Angel’s Billabong.

What to Expect at Diamond Beach

Once you arrive at Diamond Beach, you’ll need to pay the 10,000 rupiah which is standard for all attractions on Nusa Penida.

This fee includes parking your bike in the designated spot near the staircase. Once you’ve paid your tourist tax of sorts, you’re free to explore the area.

Immediately, upon seeing the incredible Diamond Beach, I’m sure you’ll finally come to terms with the hype. This beach is incredible, but it only gets better as you continue down to its shores!

THe Epic Diamond Beach Cliff Stairway

Perhaps the main attraction of Diamond Beach on Nusa Penida is its incredibly scenic rock staircase. I’m really not sure how this was covered out, but I give kudos to the handymen!

There’s even a hand-made rail that leads most of the way down the steep descent.

It only takes about 5 minutes to reach the bottom. While it is steep, it definitely shouldn’t be a problem for most– especially if you’ve just managed the tough roads out here on a motorbike!

The staircase itself is great for photos but keep in mind this is a popular spot. The last thing you want is a photo queue at such a scenic island location!

Diamond Beach Nusa Penida

As you descend the rocky stairway to the sands of Diamond Beach, you’ll likely realize where the beach got its name. There are a few large, diamond-shaped rock outcrops that line the headland and the sands.

The beach itself is a dream, and definitely one that’s hard to beat! The water is mind-bending blue and combined with that white cliff backdrop makes this a serious contender for Indonesia’s most beautiful beach.

We spent a good couple of hours at Diamond Beach after checking out the other nearby attractions. If you’re planning a visit to Diamond Beach on Nusa Penida, it’s a good idea to check out the Thousand Island viewpoint early, and head to the beach after to relax as we did.

An up-to-date travel guide for how to get to Nusa Penida from Bali by boat, including Canggu, Kuta, Seminyak, Ubud, and neighboring Lombok Island.

Have you been traveling in Bali or Lombok and wondering how to get to Nusa Penida? In this travel guide, I’ll provide you with updated information for you to do just that.

I keep this article updated throughout the year so it is still the most up-to-date transport guide to Nusa Penida from Bali and Lombok you’ll find online.

To summarize, you’ll find two options for getting to Nusa Penida from Bali and Lombok. These include the independent option (for those looking to stay on the island), and the top-rated day-trip option which covers some of the best Nusa Penida highlights and gets you back to Bali on the same day.

Quick Answer: How to Get to Nusa Penida From Bali on a Day Tour

If you don't have the luxury of spending a few days on the island, then another option is to book an epic day tour from Bali. As you might expect, there are dozens of tour companies offering trips but be warned they are not all equal!

I highly recommend booking a Nusa Penida day trip tour with a local company. My favorite is Four Elements, which offers several great trip options from Bali.

The two most popular day trips are their Adventure Tour and the Epic Tour. These include the best highlights of the Nusa Penida West Tour and the Nusa Penida East Tour such as:

Nusa Penida Manta Rays

Travel for 2 or 3 Days on Nusa Penida

Want to spend more time on the island? Four Elements also offer a 2-day tour and a 3-day tour directly from Bali!

How to Get to Nusa Penida From Bali Via Ferry (Canggu, Kuta, Seminyak)

For those looking to get to Nusa Penida from Bali, you'll want to know that the fast ferries heading to the islands depart from two locations.

  • The port town in Sanur - is located on the southeast coast of Bali, approximately 30 minutes from Kuta, or 1 hour from Canggu.
  • The new port at Pemelisan Harbor - is also located on the southeast coast of Bali.

My recommendation for those looking to get to Nusa Penida from Canggu, Seminyak, or Kuta is to book the fast-ferry ticket departing from Sanur as this includes a van/shuttle transfer to the port. This means you won't need to worry about paying for a Grab or Taxi to the ferry terminal, which would end up making the independent option much more expensive.

Additionally, below I've included the ferry timetable, but this is available on the booking page. This deal with GYG isn't for a single boat but allows you to choose any of the fast boat ferries to the island at the cheapest rate.

If you head to Sanur independently, you'll need to try to barter down to that price for a fast boat as well, which is the mistake I made the first time I visited.

Boat to Nusa Penida

Fast-Boat Timetable

The fast-boats from Sanur Beach Port to Nusa Penida run 7 days a week on the following timetable.

Sanur to Nusa Penida Boat Timetable
Online tickets valid for all boats

Note that if the weather is too rough, the boats will not run. This is a little bit hard to predict but if you book in advance with Klook you'll either get your money back straight away or you can request a rescheduled departure.

This is one of the reasons why I recommend Klook over booking on the street.

What About From Ubud?

Getting to Nusa Penida from Ubud is a little trickier as the distance is much greater. At this time, there aren't any fast-ferry tickets available to book that include a transfer to Sanur or Pemelisan Harbor.

However, you can organize transport in Ubud to get to either port. The distance driving takes roughly an hour but can definitely be longer depending on traffic. For transport options from Ubud to Sanur Harbour, I recommend checking 12Go which will give you updated times and prices for buses and taxis.

Alternatively, this full-day tour of Penida from Bali can be booked online and will include a transfer for an awesome day on Nusa Penida from Ubud.

Diamond Beach Stairway on Nusa Penida Island

What It's Like Taking the Nusa Penida Boat From Sanur

I've always taken the fast-ferry boat from Bali to Nusa Penida via the Sanur Port. The first time I arrived, it was certainly a little chaotic. Since I didn't book a ticket in advance, I was immediately surrounded by eager salesmen offering me some pretty ridiculous prices.

This is what I expected being in Bali but negotiating turned out to be a real pain here.

However, I did luck out the first time and chose what I consider the best boat, Sanjaya. This boat is safe, the staff is really friendly and you even get offered a coffee when you arrive. I've read good reviews about most of the fast boats but this is the one I've always taken and I can certainly recommend it.

Once you're away, expect a roughly 45-minute journey to Nusa Penida from Sanur. The old "slow boats" don't really offer trips for tourists anymore as they're kind of dangerous and have even capsized in the past. Depending on the weather, you can expect a relaxing, scenic boat ride or a wild ocean rollercoaster ride!

Baggage limits for the Nusa Penida Boat from Bali

All the fast boats seem to have the same policy. 2x bags with a total of 30KG. However, none of them weigh your bags. They'll stow them on the deck, covered with a large tarp to avoid getting them wet.

How to Get to Nusa Penida From Lombok

Exploring the incredible island of Lombok and looking for a way to get to Nusa Penida from here? In the past, this has been a little difficult and would require a stopover in Gili Trawangan and/or Nusa Lembongan.

However, as of 2023, there is now a direct fast-boat ferry running from Lombok to Nusa Penida. This departs from Bangsal Harbor (the same harbor where you get the boat to the Gili's).

This boat is called the Golden Queen Fast Boat and you can book this online on Bookaway for $32 USD for the 2.5-hour trip.

Where to Stay on Nusa Penida Once You Arrive
