The most detailed roundup of the best Malta sunset viewpoints on the islands of Malta, Gozo, and Comino.

It’s no doubt that the Maltese Islands are one of the best Mediterranean travel destinations for adventurers and viewpoint seekers.

From its high limestone cliffs to its epic natural arches, the archipelago of Malta also offers some of the best sunsets in Europe.

That’s why, in this guide, I’ll reveal the top 21 sunset spots in Malta, Gozo, and Comino. I hope it will convince you to visit this amazing adventure travel destination!

Sunset cliffs in Malta

First: Here are Malta's Best Sunset Tours

Sunset in Malta

Best Sunset Spots on Malta's Main Island

1. Dingli Cliffs

The Dingli Cliffs is a long stretch of towering limestone cliffs on the southwest coast of Malta's main island. At around 250 meters above sea level, this 2-kilometer cliff line includes Malta's highest points, offering excellent views over the Mediterranean Sea.

There are several viewpoints along this stretch of white cliffs, but my favorites are remote stretches of road leading up to the Radar ('Il Ballun'). From here, you'll get the most beautiful sunsets just a short walk from your car.

2. Chapel of Immaculate Conception in Mellieħa Bay

While the Dingli Cliffs are one of the most popular places to watch the sunset, you'll also find several hidden gems just like this tiny church hidden away in Malta's northeast point near the Coral Lagoon.

The Chapel of Immaculate Conception is a tiny church overlooking the pristine waters of Mellieħa Bay. I can almost guarantee that there won't be any other tourists here, which makes it the most romantic place to watch the warm summer glow fade behind the hilltop churches.

Car Rentals in Malta

The best way to experience both Malta and Gozo islands is to rent your own car! I recommend booking well in advance using price comparison sites like DiscoverCars if traveling in the busy summer season.

3. Mtahleb

In the remote western tip of Malta, you'll find the wild region of Mtahleb. This is a great coastal hiking region and one of the best sunset points to watch the sun fade behind the horizon.

One of my favorite viewpoints in this region is Miġra l-Ferħa, a high cliff dropping vertically into deep, blue water and providing spectacular views!

4. The Blue Grotto & Wied Iż-Żurrieq

The Blue Grotto of Malta is an epic sea cave filled with crystal-clear water. It's one of the most popular sites in the country, but did you know that it's also a great place to spend your golden hour?

There is a viewpoint just behind the Blue Grotto near the village of Wied Iż-Żurrieq offering breathtaking views of the setting sun to the west. You can also head down to the village, where you'll find some excellent places to sit down near the edge of the sea.

5. Malta Sunset Cruise

Malta's coastline is incredibly unique, and there's no better way to explore it than from the water.

That's why I highly recommend booking a Maltese Sunset Cruise. These trips depart from Buggiba Jetty, which is easy to get to from the main tourist hotel areas.

The cruise includes a scenic boat ride, stopping at some of the best locations including the must-visit Blue Lagoon during the sunset!

6. Popeye Village Viewpoint at Anchor Bay

The Popeye Village on the western side of the island is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Malta. However, many don't know that its location in Anchor Bay is also a great place to visit, especially if you're chasing sunset viewpoints!

The edges of this narrow inlet are surrounded by rocky slopes forming a sheltered bay with a beautiful view of the setting sun.

7. Golden Bay

Golden Bay is world-famous for its red sands and crystal clear water, and due to its location on the western side of Malta, it's also the perfect sunset beach!

I recommend making a trip to Golden Bay for an afternoon swim, then relaxing on its golden sands while watching the sun set behind the limestone cliffs.

8. Ghajn Tuffieha Bay

The unique clay cliffs of Għajn Tuffieħa in Malta's Il-Majjistral Nature & History Park is another excellent place to spend the last hours of the day.

This spot is located just south of the popular Golden Bay, but attracts a fraction of the tourists. I recommend hiking out to the Il-Qarraba headland, where you'll get a great view of the coast in both directions. Alternatively, walk across to Ġnejna Bay, another beautiful beach with many picturesque locations.

9. The Red Tower (It-Torri L-Ahmar) in Mellieha

If you're staying in the popular tourist hub of Mellieħa Bay, then you'll undoubtedly have spotted the Red Tower protruding from its hilltop location in the north.

This is known as It-Torri L-Aħmar, or Saint Agatha's Tower, and it's one of the best places to experience beautiful Maltese sunsets. Either walk from Mellieħa or drive up to the nearby parking area. From here, you'll get excellent views of Comino and the Gozo Channel!

10. Fomm ir-rih

Another off-the-beaten-path beach on the western side of Malta's main island, Fomm ir-rih is definitely worth adding to your sunset-chasing itinerary.

While the pebble beach itself is a little tricky to get down to, the cliffs above it make for an excellent viewpoint. There's also a historic WW2 Pillbox right nearby, which might be worth checking out!

We explored this region by renting a kayak at neighboring Gnejna Bay, which I highly recommend!

11. The Grand Harbour in Valletta

Valletta's Grand Harbour is perhaps the most iconic place in the country. While there aren't any great spots to watch the sunset over the water, it's still one of the most picturesque places during Golden Hour.

Head over to the Upper Barrakka Gardens for excellent views of the harbor, or pick a spot by the waterfront boardwalk and watch the traditional boats plotting along.

12. The Three Cities

Across the Grand Harbour lies Malta's Three Cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua. This area is rich in history and traditional Maltese culture, but also offers some spectacular viewpoints over the capital city.

Unmissable Sunset Locations on Gozo

13. Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs

With remote, rugged coastlines and epic geological formations, Malta's sister island of Gozo is the country's adventure capital! One of my favorite Gozo sunset points is the Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs, situated on the island's southern coast near the village of Sannat.

Depending on the time of the year, you'll either get to watch the sun slip beyond the Mediterranean horizon or slowly set behind the white cliffs.

Ta Cenc Cliffs Viewpoint at Sunset, Gozo Island, Malta

14. Sanap Cliffs Sunset Viewpoint on Gozo

Along the same cliff line as Ta’ Ċenċ lies another breathtaking sunset spot named the Sanap Cliffs.

This is another great spot as it's one of the highest points of Gozo Island. Additionally, the views of nearby Rabat and its famous Citadella.

15. Wied il-Mielaħ

Gozo Island is well-known for its awesome natural arches. While the Azure window is no more, Wied il-Mielaħ is still a remarkable feature worth checking out, especially during sunset.

From this vantage point, the sun usually sets behind the coast, and if you're lucky, you'll get a golden ray of light shining through the arch!

Travel Tip: When touring Gozo's rugged north coast, make sure to stop by at the nearby Wied il-Ghasri Beach and the Marsalforn Salt Flats, two more epic spots for sunset photography!

16. Dwejra Bay

Dwejra Bay is a unique place and home to several highlight attractions like the Blue Hole, Fungus Rock, and the Inland Sea. And, due to its western location, it's also one of the best sunset points in Gozo.

Grab a mat and climb up to the cliffs above the clear blue water of the Blue Lagoon for one of the stand-out viewpoints in the region!

17. Tal Mixta Cave

Heading over to the northern end of Gozo and we'll find the famous red sands of Ramla Bay, one of the most popular beaches in Malta thanks to its shallow waters and soft sand.

While the beach itself is great during the sunset, I recommend walking up to Tal-Mixta Cave, hidden away on the cliffs to the east. This cave features a huge, open face, framing the beach lit up by the golden glow of the setting summer sun.

Tal Mixta Cave Viewpoint of Ramla Bay, Malta

18. Calypso Cave Viewpoint

Sitting on top of a hill on the opposite side of Rambla Bay lies another famous Maltese cave. Calpyso's Cave, while now mostly collapsed, is supposedly the cave mentioned in Homer's famous tale of "the Odyssey".

Unfortunately, access to the cave is forbidden. However, travelers will find an epic viewpoint right above it, which is also one of the best spots in Gozo!

Comino Sunset Viewpoints

19. The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is perhaps one of the most beautiful natural wonders in Europe. Picture crystal clear turquoise water dropping into a deep blue and edged by orange and white limestone– a landscape photographer's dream!

The Blue Lagoon and the nearby Crystal Lagoon are great places to swim but are also one of the most unique sunset locations on Comino. Either book an evening sunset cruise to the lagoon or take the short walk up to the islet view just above it and watch the sun light up the translucent waters.

Blue Lagoon Area two

20. Santa Marija Caves

The Santa Marija caves are another highlight attraction on Comino, and quite an amazing place to photograph the Maltese sunset.

The best way to access the caves is from the sea, either by kayak or on an island boat trip. However, it's also possible to enter the cave from the land by taking the short coastal walking track from Santa Maria Beach.

Alternatively, hike up to the top of the caves to Ġebel Comino, the highest point on the island for one of the most unique sunset vantage points!

21. Saint Mary's Tower & Lantern Point

On Comino's southernmost point lies the Saint Mary's Tower, a historic fortified watchtower offering outstanding views over the entire Maltese archipelago.

Travelers can reach this point by hiking up the limestone cliffs from the Blue Lagoon. If you do, make sure to walk out to Lantern Point, another top Malta sunset spot reaching far out into the Gozo Channel.

Where to Stay in Malta

While visitors will find hotels and resorts scattered all over Malta's islands, the most popular neighborhoods to base yourself in Malta include Valletta, Sliema & St Julian's, Mellieħa Bay, and Gozo Island.

Travelers also have a broad variety of accommodation types, from 5-star resorts to traditional terraced boutique hotels. To save you time searching, below are the four best accommodation picks for Malta, based on location, reviews, and my personal experience.

  • St Julian's & Sliema Area: The Hilton
This is Malta's premiere resort, located at the heart of the picturesque Portomaso Marina. This is a great pick if you're trying to balance great location with utmost luxury.
  • Valletta: Iniala Harbour House
Perched atop Valletta's stunning St Barbara Bastion, this incredible boutique experience is well-regarded as one of the best accommodation options in Malta. The experience offers stunning views of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities from traditional Maltese balconies.
  • Mellieħa - db Seabank Resort
The db Seabank is well-regarded as the best resort in the calmer Mellieħa area. Situated just feet from the white sandy shores of Malta's longest beach, this complete all-inclusive hotel offers features five restaurants, a fitness center, a spa, multiple pools, and even a bowling alley!
  • Gozo - Quaint Boutique Hotel (Nadur)
Accommodation on Malta's quieter sister island should reflect its more peaceful and traditional ambiance. This beautifully renovated boutique hotel is situated directly beside the Nadur Parish Church, with spacious balcony terraces looking over the town square.

Travel tip: Accommodation in Malta sells out quickly, especially for the summer vacation period. This is a location where you do not want to book at the last minute!

Your ultimate guide to the best Malta beaches from the main island, Comino, and Gozo.

With more than 300 days of sunshine per year, the Maltese islands are officially Europe’s sunniest country!

Combine this great weather with beautiful beaches, secluded rocky coves, and the crystal clear, Mediterranean Sea, and you’ve got yourself the ideal seaside vacation spot!

In this comprehensive guide, I’ll reveal the 35 best beaches in Malta, from Mellieha Bay on the main island to the far-flung golden sands of Ramla Bay on Gozo! If you scroll to the bottom of this post, I’ve also included a useful beach map to help you find your way around the coast!

Beautiful Sandy Beaches on Malta Island

1. Golden Bay Beach

Famous for its golden red sands and crystal clear water, Golden Bay is up there with one of the most popular beaches in Malta!

Located on the northwest region of the main island, this beach is also well-known for its water sports activities and incredible seaside resort, the Radisson Blue Resort– one of the best places to stay in Malta.

Car Rentals in Malta

The best way to experience both Malta and Gozo islands is to rent your own car! I recommend booking well in advance using price comparison sites like DiscoverCars if traveling in the busy summer season.

2. Għajn Tuffieħa Beach (Riviera Beach)

Situated just south of Golden Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa Beach is another sandy beach protected by a rocky headland. Here, you’ll find shallow waters which are great for swimming with kids.

While by no means a secluded hidden gem (more of these below), Għajn Tuffieħa is often much less crowded than Golden Bay.

Additionally, travelers will find a few walking tracks just above the sandy shores. The best one winds up to a View Point on the Il-Qarraba headland, providing spectacular views of the transparent waters of the Mediterranean.

Ghajn Tuffieha Beach in Malta

3. Gnejna Beach

Gnejna Bay holds another excellent sandy beach known for water sports and unique rocky geological formations.

This is a great option for those looking to do some kayaking, as just around the headland you’ll find some spectacular sea caves, known as Ta’ Marija Cave.

4. Mellieħa Bay (Għadira Bay)

Mellieħa Bay is one of the most popular beaches in the north of Malta. That’s because Mellieħa Bay is Malta’s longest sandy beach, with peaceful, shallow waters that are very safe for young children.

This region is also one of the best areas to stay in Malta, with some of the best seaside resorts and beach clubs located in this surrounding area of Għadira Bay.

Mellieha Beach in North Malta

5. Armier Bay Beach

Moving further north of Malta and we’ll discover some of the best secluded beaches on the island. Armier Bay Beach and Little Armier Beach are two beautiful protected coves on Malta’s northeast tip providing soft sands and clear water for swimming.

This is a popular spot for those looking to escape the crowds at some of Malta’s more popular beaches like Mellieħa Beach and Golden Bay. Furthermore, kayak rental stalls often operate on the beach here, which is perfect for exploring the rocky north.

Armier Bay in Malta

6. Paradise Bay Beach

The northern peninsula of Malta is where you will find the Cirkewwa Passenger Terminal for the Gozo Channel Ferry. While it seems contradictory, one of Malta’s most beautiful beaches is tucked just around the corner from this terminal!

Paradise Bay Beach is an incredibly beautiful bay that is perfect for swimming and snorkeling in scenic natural surroundings. In fact, the beach is so tranquil that you’ll likely forget that you’re right next to a ferry terminal!

Paradise Bay Beach in Malta

7. Pretty Bay Beach

Another stunning beach with surprising surroundings is Pretty Bay beach near Il-Bajja s-Sabiha in the south of Malta.

Pretty Bay is another sandy beach with several hotels and traditional limestone buildings dotting its shores. This is a great place for sunbaking, boating, or grabbing an ice cream or espresso at the many local shops.

Pretty Beach in Malta

While this beach is undoubtedly a great place to hang out, there is the unfortunate eye-sore of the Malta freeport in direct view. Nonetheless, the clear waters and nearby amenities mean that Pretty Bay deserves a spot on this list of the best beaches in Malta.

8. St. George’s Bay

As we make our way across the main island to the lively resort and hotel areas of Paceville and St Julians we’ll find the protected little cove called St. George’s Bay.

If you’re staying at one of the many hotels or all-inclusive resorts in the area, this little beach is well worth visiting! The waters are quite deep on this side, but the long, arching coast protects it from almost all wind.

St. George's Bay in St Julian's, Malta

9. Balluta Bay Beach

Similarly to St. George’s Bay, Balluta Bay Beach is a popular little sandy beach located smack-bang in the heart of the busy St Julian’s resort area.

This is a good spot for a quick swim or, head over to the Balluta Watersports stall and rent a jet ski!

Balluta Bay in Malta

Tip: Balluta Bay & St. George’s Bay can get very busy due to their central locations. However, if you walk north around the bay in Balluta, you’ll find another small rocky beach called Exiles Beach, a small local hidden gem.

10. Malta Freeport Beach

Another unlikely location to have a beautiful white sand beach, Malta Freeport Beach is surprisingly a nice and very unique place to swim!

Situated directly opposite the busy port, this little strip of sand makes for an excellent place to stretch out on a towel or go for a quick swim away from the crowds at nearby Pretty Bay.

11. Imġiebaħ Beach

Looking for a secluded cove without tourists? A great spot is Imġiebaħ Beach, a quiet and remote beach with clear water situated on Malta’s northeast shore, not far from Mellieħa Bay.

This one is definitely more of a local’s beach, and one of my absolute favorites in Malta!

Imġiebaħ Beach, Malta

12. St. Thomas Bay Sandy Beach

St. Thomas Bay is an excellent sandy beach located between the beautiful villages of Marsaskala and the famous fishing village of Marsaxlokk on Malta’s east coast.

This is another local favorite, with a few rocky shores and sections of beautiful sandy beaches hidden to the south beneath the Munxar cliffs.

Rocky Beaches, Natural & Secluded Coves in Malta

13. Ramla tal-Qortin & Ramla tal-Bir

While there are plenty of picturesque sandy beaches in the archipelago, what truly makes Malta unique is its amazing limestone shorelines. One of my favorite spots to hang out on the rocks and snorkel in deep, clear water are the two bays surrounding the former Ramla Bay Resort (currently under renovation).

These are known as Ramla tal-Bir and Ramla tal-Qortin, or the Ramla Bays of northern Malta island. Not to be confused with the famous Ramla Bay on Gozo, these two scenic bays both have a long, flat rocky shore perfect for summer picnics.

The water is also crystal clear here, and one of the best beaches in Malta for snorkeling!

Ramla Beach Malta

14. Anchor Bay (Popeye Village)

On the opposite side of Mellieħa, across the narrow, isthmus-like section of Malta’s main island lies the former film-set turned theme park known as Popeye Village of Anchor Bay.

Many tourists visit Popeye Village to see the set, but not many are aware that this is also a great place for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving! Just below the cliff to the south of the village is a sheltered area providing easy access to the water, and a great place to have a barbecue or picnic.

Anchor Bay Malta

Additionally, sunset chasers will definitely want to head to this spot during the golden hour, as this is the ideal place to catch a sunset, with spectacular views of the sun sinking below the Mediterranean horizon.

15. Qarraba Bay

Qarraba Bay is a rocky area wedged between Gnejna and Għajn Tuffieħa beaches. This spot is one of the most scenic in Malta, with unique limestone cliff formations unlike anywhere else on the island.

I recommend renting a Kayak at one of the nearby beaches and visiting this bay, which is usually only accessible from the sea. Additionally, the nearby Ta’Babu Cove and the protruding rock makes for an excellent snorkeling spot!

Qarraba Bay Malta

16. Ghar Lapsi Beach

Ghar Lapsi is a remote area in the very south of Malta’s main island. While often missed by most tourists, this location features some scenic coastal walking tracks, passing some spectacular beaches complete with sea caves and clear blue waters.

Ghar Lapsi Beach in Malta

17. Zurrieq Valley Sea Inlet

While most tourists will visit Wied iz-Zurrieq for the opportunity to explore the incredible Blue Grotto, the tiny rocky inlet near the Blue Grotto boat service is also a spectacular place to swim in Malta.

These rocky shores are very picturesque, with sharp drops into deep water, making for a great cliff jumping spot. Additionally, scuba divers will not want to miss the nearby Um El-Faroud wreck, which is one of the best wreck dive sites in Malta.

Zurrieq Valley Sea Inlet

18. Il-Kalanka

Next up is my favorite rocky beach in Malta, the pristine Il-Kalanka bay near Marsaxlokk in eastern Malta. This one is situated near the very end of Il-Kalanka point, near the lighthouse.

This bay is one of the most beautiful beaches in Malta, complete with deep, calm water to jump in straight from the limestone rocks. Furthermore, there are steel ladders fixed around the bay, making for easy access and a lot of fun!

Il Kalanka Beach in Malta

19. St. Peter’s Pool

Malta is renowned for its spectacular natural pools. One of the very best is found just north of Il-Kalanka beach and is known as St. Peter’s Pool. This is a horseshoe-shaped natural swimming pool with deep, crystal-clear water.

Many tourists and locals will head down to this pool in the summer months to relax and jump off the limestone rocks into the pool. If you’re up for some fun and adventure, St. Peter’s Pool is a great place to visit on your Malta beach-hopping itinerary.

St Peter's Pool in Malta

20. Il-Ħofra l-Kbira & Ta Kalanka Sea Cave

Heading north from Kalanka Point, on the small peninsula located between Marsaxlokk and St. Thomas Bay is a secluded rocky beach that is very little-known by tourists.

Accessible only via a single road leading out to the headland, here you’ll discover an incredible rocky beach complete with a large sea cave, providing excellent shelter during the hot summer days on Malta island.

Malta sea cave beach

21. Coral Lagoon

In terms of hidden gems, they don’t get much better than the Coral Lagoon. Appropriately named, this collapsed sea cave is a unique geological natural pool etched into the limestone cliffs on Malta’s northern point.

You’ll need a kayak or boat to access this one, but once inside you’ll discover one of the most tranquil places in Malta. The lagoon is filled with azure water and corals, and is deep enough to swim and snorkel.

Coral Lagoon

22. Qawra Point Beach

Travelers staying in the buzzling Buġibba area will certainly want to add Qawra Point to their list of beaches to visit in Malta.

This rocky coastline is hidden at the tip of the bay, just beneath the famous Cafe del Mar beach bar. There’s plenty of space to relax here, and plenty of access to the deep bay.

Qawra Point in Malta

23. Buġibba Perched Beach

The main beach in Buġibba is really a sandy one, but the sand is artificial, placed on a beautiful rocky shoreline lined with palm trees and resorts. This beach is quite busy but is a great place to swim and lounge beneath a sun umbrella with a cocktail.

Buggiba Beach

24. Mistra Bay

Across the bay from Buġibba is a quiet, rocky coastline area known as Mistra. Mistra Bay Beach, while certainly not as vibrant as its immediate neighbors, it provides a tranquil place to relax or rent a kayak from.

Amazing Beaches on Comino Island

25. Blue Lagoon

Comino’s Blue Lagoon is Malta’s most notable natural attraction. Picture iconic orange limestone cliffs dropping into some of the clearest waters you’ve ever seen.

Located on the smallest island, Comino, and only via a boat trip from Malta or Gozo, Blue Lagoon also has one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the country! One of the best ways to get to the Blue Lagoon is to book the popular Blue Lagoon & Comino Caves trip, which is great value for money.

Blue lagoon in Malta

26. Crystal Lagoon

While not as famous or well-known as the Blue Lagoon, Comino’s Crystal Lagoon is arguably just as beautiful. This picturesque bay is situated on the southwest corner of the tiny island and is often missed by tourists.

Here, you’ll discover a deep bay with crystal clear waters surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. There’s also a small pebble beach at the edge of the bay, providing a great place to relax as well.

Malta Crystal Lagoon

27. St Niklaw Bay

Travelers taking the ferry or boat trip to the Blue Lagoon will likely soon realize just how busy this place gets. If you’re looking for a Malta beach to escape the crowds from on Comino, take the short island walking trail to St. Niklaw Bay, just a few hundred meters from the Blue Lagoon.

This bay has a small sandy beach with turquoise waters– great for swimming or snorkeling!

Saint Niklaw Bay on Comino Island, Malta

28. Santa Maria Bay

Besides the Blue Lagoon, Santa Maria Bay (Santa Marija Bay) is the most popular beach on Comino Island. The waters here are quite shallow, with a long stretch of white sand lining its shores.

The color of the water in this bay is unbelievably blue, providing excellent conditions for snorkeling. Additionally, visitors will have the option of taking a short walk over to the Santa Maria Caves, which are a must-visit attraction on Comino!

Santa Maria Beach in Malta

Top Beaches on Gozo Island

29. Ħondoq ir-Rummien

Starting directly across the channel from Comino over to Malta’s sister island; Gozo we have the picturesque and compact beach named Hondoq Bay (Ħondoq ir-Rummien Bay).

This is a very small beach with soft sands, protected by rocky outcrops on either side. Furthermore, there are several water sports companies operating here, so you have the option of water skiing, kayaking, or renting a SUP!

Hondoq Bay in Malta

30. Ramla Beach (Ramla Bay)

Perhaps one of the most famous beaches in Malta, Ramla Bay Beach is a spectacular stretch of red sand overlooking the northern shores of Gozo Island.

Similarly to Mellieħa on the main island, the shallow water here makes it the perfect place for water sports or for enjoying a day at the beach with the family.

Additionally, Ramla Bay is known for its adjacent caves, Calypso’s Cave, and the spectacular viewpoint cave called Tal-Mixta Cave– go check them out!

31. Wied Il-Għasri

My personal favorite beach on Gozo Island, Malta is Wied Il-Għasri. This is one of the most scenic rocky inlets in the Maltese Islands and features a minuscule sandy beach entering into a snaking river-like canyon leading to the Mediterranean Sea in the north.

The Wied il Ghasri cove also contains several surrounding underwater caves, which makes it a popular spot for scuba divers and snorkelers.

Wied Il Ghasri Bay on Gozo Island, Malta

32. Inland Sea

The Inland Sea might not appear on all lists of Malta’s best beaches, but I’d say it’s one of the most unique! This is a magnificent natural saltwater lagoon situated in Dwejra Bay on the island of Gozo’s rugged west.

This shallow semi-circular lagoon is lined by a thin, pebble beach and is often dotted with small fishing boats laying anchor during rough seas.

Inland Sea Beach on Gozo Island

33. The Blue Hole

Malta’s Blue Hole is another spectacular rock formation right next to the famous Inland Sea in Dwejra Bay (Gozo).

While not a traditional beach, it is a great place to swim and snorkel, as this awesome vertical underwater tunnel is filled with crystal clear water! This is also located right beneath the former Azure Window!

Blue Hole in Malta

34. Xlendi Beach

Xlendi Beach in Gozo’s lively Xlendi township is an excellent place to visit if you’re chasing beach bars, caves, and an overall chill vibe.

While the beach here is very small, travelers will want to check out the cliffside walking trails leading to a nearby cave and cliff-jumping spot! Afterward, go check out the nearby salt pans or grab a drink at one of the many seaside bars.

Xlendi Beach in Malta

35. Mġarr ix-Xini

Looking to get off the beaten path on your Gozo beach hopping itinerary? If you’re visiting during the high season, make sure you include a visit to Mġarr ix-Xini.

This is a sheltered bay similar to Wied Il-Għasri but attracts a fraction of the tourists. Due to the high, fjord-like cliffs, this bay is usually very sheltered, even during bad weather.

Furthermore, beachgoers in Malta can enjoy the small pebble strand or the many flat rocks around it, providing a great place to sit down with friends and family.

Malta Accommodation Guide – Where to Stay Near the Beach

While visitors will find hotels and resorts scattered all over Malta’s islands, the most popular neighborhoods to base yourself in Malta include Valletta, Sliema & St Julian’s, Mellieħa Bay, and Gozo Island.

Travelers also have a broad variety of accommodation types, from 5-star resorts to traditional terraced boutique hotels. To save you time searching, below are the four best accommodation picks for Malta, based on location, reviews, and my personal experience.

  • St Julian’s & Sliema Area: The Hilton
This is Malta’s premiere resort, located at the heart of the picturesque Portomaso Marina. This is a great pick if you’re trying to balance great location with utmost luxury.
  • Valletta: Iniala Harbour House
Perched atop Valletta’s stunning St Barbara Bastion, this incredible boutique experience is well-regarded as one of the best accommodation options in Malta. The experience offers stunning views of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities from traditional Maltese balconies.

Useful Beach Resources for Malta

Below are some useful resources that’ll serve you well as you explore the spectacular beaches in Malta, Gozo, and Comino!

The Blue Flag Beaches in Malta

This flag system is one of the world’s most recognized voluntary awards for beaches, awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to beaches that meet environmental standards. There are several blue flag beaches in Malta, including

  • Mellieħa Bay
  • St George’s Bay
  • Qawra Bay
  • Golden Bay
  • Paradise Bay
  • Ghajn Tuffieha
  • Ramla Bay (the beach in Gozo)
  • Hondoq ir-Rummien

How to get to the Beaches in Malta

By far, the best way to explore the Maltese islands is to rent a car. However, during the busy summer months, cars can sell out quickly. I recommend comparing prices across dealerships in St Julian, Mellieħa, and the International Airport on a comparison site like DiscoverCars.

Alternatively, you can always use Malta’s well-connected public transport bus network– just plan ahead for the return trip!

Common Jellyfish

Due to rising sea levels in the southern Mediterranean, Malta suffers from a growing jellyfish problem.

Luckily, these stingers are not dangerous, but some regular culprits like the Mauve Stinger can leave a slight burn.

Luckily, there is a useful map that tourists can check out showing the best beaches in Malta to avoid jellies, based on weather conditions like wind and waves. Additionally, this map will show information about rough weather and give advice on the best beaches to visit during the summer months in Malta.

A complete and comprehensive travel guide to Comino Island, Malta. Features 16 top attractions and things to do on this tiny Maltese island.

Did you know that some of the most popular attractions in Malta are found on the tiny island of Comino?

Located between the island of Gozo and the main island of Malta, Comino Island is a Mediterranean Sea paradise featuring some of the most spectacular natural attractions in this amazing island nation.

Discover crystal-clear waters, magnificent sea caves, and countless fun activities and unmissable things to do on Comino in this useful travel guide. Here, I’ll reveal to you the top Comino Island highlights like swimming in Malta’s Blue Lagoon, exploring the magnificent Santa Marija Bay, and marveling at the towering limestone cliffs at Crystal Lagoon.

Furthermore, I’ll also break down the best ways to get to Comino Island from Malta or Gozo, what to expect once you arrive, and include useful tips like the best time to visit, where to stay, and a brief history of the island.

Comino Coastline, Malta

About The Maltese Island of Comino

Comino, also Kemmuna in Maltese, is a tiny island situated between the main island of Malta and its sister island, Gozo.

At only 3.5 square kilometers (1.35 square miles) in size, Comino is also the smallest of the three main islands of Malta. This island is generally considered the most beautiful place in Malta and has an official nature reserve status. This is the island where you will find some of Malta’s most beautiful coastal attractions like the famous Blue Lagoon.

The official population of Comino is just 2 people, with no asphalted roads or public transport (besides shuttle boats) on the island. However, there are basic amenities including a public toilet, police station, church, and even the Comino Hotel (the only accommodation on the island).

Comino is a generally rocky landscape and is sprawling with colorful flowers and wild herbs, including natural cumin, which the island is named after.

How to Get to Comino from Gozo or Malta

Since Comino Island is one of Malta’s most famous tourist attractions, you’ll find a wide range of popular ways to get here from the main island of Malta.

These include:

  • Day Trip: Shared Boat Tours from Malta
  • Private Boat Trip (from Gozo or Comino)
  • Public Transport & Ferry from Ċirkewwa (northern port in Malta)

Below I’ll break down each option before getting into all the top attractions and fun things to do on Comino Island when you arrive.

Boat tour on Comino Island, Malta

#1 Rated Comino Boat Tour

Looking for the quick answer? Click the button to be taken directly to the booking page for the most inclusive and cost-effective Comino group boat trip you can find online.

Travel Tip: Since the majority of travelers stay on the main island of Malta, I’ve only included directions for getting to Comino from here. However, travelers looking for a way to get to Comino from Gozo Island can also book this Gozo to Comino boat trip with Outdoor Explorers.

1. Comino Island BOAT TOUR (OR CATAMARAN) FROM MALTA

Firstly, the easiest way to get to Comino is to book a Comino group boat tour. You can book this day trip online and it includes 4.5 hours to spend at the Blue Lagoon as well as all of the Comino highlights including:

  • Crystal Lagoon
  • Santa Maria Cave
  • Elephants Head
  • Santa Maria Bay
  • St. Nicholas Bay
  • Ahrax Cave

This Comino Blue Lagoon & Caves Boat Cruise linked above currently offers the most bang-for-buck, but the boat is large and accommodates a bigger crowd. Alternatively, travelers preferring a small-group tour have the option of booking a catamaran cruise or private tour instead.

Luzzu boat trip Comino

2. Malta Private Boat Tour of Comino Island

Small groups or those who don’t want to share a boat with other tourists also have the option to book a private tour on small speed boats.

In my opinion, this is the best way to experience Comino Island as you’ll likely visit more secluded spots and see a bit more than what the larger group tours can accommodate. I highly recommend the trip I went on with Outdoor Explorers, a local business run by two brothers.

On this trip, we visited all of the epic sea caves, and our skipper Joseph even drove inside some of the smaller ones, which was awesome!

3. Budget Option: Boat Trip Transfer to Comino

If you’re not in a rush, the cheapest way to get to Comino is by taking the boat transfer from Ċirkewwa Port on Malta Island, and Mġarr Port on Gozo.

This isn’t a boat tour but simply a small boat ferry transfer that is slightly cheaper than the full island tour. It departs every 30 minutes from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Booking in advance isn’t usually necessary.

This is a good option if you’re only planning to visit the Blue Lagoon and would like to explore the island on foot. However, several attractions on Comino like the sea caves, unique rock formations, and the secluded arches on the southern side aren’t accessible from the land.

16 Top Attractions & Things to do on Comino Island

Now that you’re equipped with all the information you need to visit, let’s dive into this comprehensive list of things to do on Comino, the heart of the Maltese Islands!

Infographic for tip tips on Comino Island

1. The Comino Blue Lagoon

Of course, the island’s main attraction is the famous Comino Blue Lagoon. This shallow, protected cove lies on the western side, sheltered between Comino and neighboring islet Cominotto. In fact, its Maltese name, Bejn il-Kmiemen, literally translates to Between the Cominos.

The clear waters of the Blue Lagoon are somewhat of a posterchild for Malta, appearing in tourism adverts and as a mandatory addition to any visitor’s Instagram grid. The turquoise water and sandy bottom at the Blue Lagoon make it the perfect place for swimming and snorkeling with many fish and healthy marine life.

All Comino Island boat trips visit the Blue Lagoon, with a small boat ramp being the main disembarkation point onto Comino Island from Malta or Gozo.

Malta Blue Lagoon

Travel Tip: Be warned, the Blue Lagoon can get seriously busy during the peak season (summer months). However, in order to get this amazing spot practically all to yourself is to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The private boat trip linked above can be arranged for an early pickup. Alternatively, these guys also offer a sunset Blue Lagoon trip which would also guarantee fewer crowds.

Blue Lagoon in Malta

2. Cominotto Island

Cominotto Island is a tiny islet sitting directly opposite Comino and the Blue Lagoon. When visiting Comino and the Blue Lagoon, make sure to take a swim across the crystal clear waters to this tiny islet for a more secluded beach and an epic beach cave!

Cominotto means small Comino, and its beach Cominotto Beach was featured in the epic Troy movie.

If you’re interested in water sports, you can also rent a kayak or SUP from the Blue Lagoon area and paddle over yourself!

Jet ski at Cominotto Beach and cave

3. Crystal Lagoon

While everybody knows about the famous Blue Lagoon, few are aware that just around the bend is another amazing clear water lagoon that I believe is equally, if not more beautiful than the Blue Lagoon!

The Crystal Lagoon is a wide, sheltered bay filled with clear turquoise water and a white, sandy bottom. The cove is located just south of the Blue Lagoon, either by taking the short 700-meter (765 yards) walking track (a roughly 5 minute walk) or via boat for those on a Comino Island tour.

Visiting the Crystal Lagoon is one of my favorite things to do on Comino. There are several small sea caves in this bay, as well as a steep, towering limestone cliff line that contrasts beautifully with the blue water below.

Crystal Lagoon Malta

4. Tunnel Cave

Comino’s limestone coastline is dotted with deep and intricate sea caves that are ripe for exploring! Many of these are only accessible from the water, meaning you’ll need either a small boat or kayak to enter them.

One of my favorite of these sea caves on Comino is the Tunnel Cave, a long natural tunnel connecting the southern end of the Blue Lagoon to the Crystal Lagoon. This one is a little too narrow to fit a boat through. However, if you are confident, it’s possible to swim through it in calm weather.

5. Popeye’s Cave

Directly across the lagoon from the Tunnel Cave is yet another spectacular cave on Comino Island. Locals call this one Popeye’s Cave, as it appeared in the 1980 Popeye film starring Robbin Williams.

Popeye’s Cave features a huge cavern accessible on the south-facing coast just east of Crystal Lagoon. The roof of this cave has collapsed, revealing a large natural skylight radiating down on the huge limestone boulders below.

6. Scuba Diving – the P31 Wreck on Comino Island

Divers regard Malta as the best scuba diving location in Europe. As a result, you can expect that one of the best things to do on Comino Island is to go diving in its several cave systems and nearby shipwrecks.

My favorite dive on Comino Island is the P31 wreck, also known as Patrol Boat P31 (Pasewalk), lying on a sandy bottom just a few hundred meters from the southern side of the Blue Lagoon.

This is a beginner-friendly wreck dive as the wreck is almost perfectly upright, with the lowest section sitting at a depth of just 18-20 meters.

Diver’s Tip: If you’re considering scuba diving on Comino Island from Malta, I highly recommend visiting OrangeShark Diving Centre. These guys run one of the most impressive and professional dive shops I’ve ever visited!

7. Window Cave

Another interesting attraction on Comino Island Malta is the Window Cave. As its name suggests, this tiny cave is not much more than a large open hole serving as a window into the clear water beyond.

This is certainly a worthwhile photo stop if you have a SUP, kayak, or are visiting on a private boat tour on Comino.

8. Lover’s Cave

Lover’s Cave is a little-known hidden gem and a beautiful place that certainly deserves a visit! You’ll find it just a little further southeast of Popeye’s Cave as you make your way around Comino Island in an anti-clockwise direction.

Once again only accessible from the water, Lover’s Cave appears as nothing more than a small cave opening on Comino Island’s rugged coastline. But, once you make your way down the dark, 65-meter long tunnel, you’ll see that it opens up to a large cavern with a sandy beach inside!

This really is a beautiful place– and the most private sandy beach you’ll find on Comino!

Inside lover's Cave in Malta

9. Saint Mary’s Tower

The most prominent structure on Comino Malta is the Saint Mary’s Tower, also known as Santa Marija Tower, or simply Comino Tower (Torri ta’ Kemmuna in Maltese). This large, bastioned watchtower was built during the times of the Maltese Knights in 1618, and served as the fifth of six Wignacourt Towers.

Malta has a long history of invasion dating back past the Middle Ages. Many foreign forces made their way to the Maltese Islands, including pirates, Ottoman Turks, Romans, Arabs, Carthaginians, and Phoenicians.

As a result, the Knights established these watchtowers as a warning strategy against these invading forces. If guards spotted an opposing fleet, they lit fires at the top of the tower, which would warn the others to do the same.

Today, you can spot Saint Mary’s Tower from the sea, or hike out to it from the Blue Lagoon. You’ll find it on a high cliff point near the southwest corner of Comino Island, nearby an abandoned isolation hospital.

Saint Mary's Tower on Comino Island, Malta

10. San Niklaw Bay

Moving to the north end of Comino and we’ll arrive at the beautiful turquoise waters of San Niklaw Bay. This is one of the best places on Comino for swimming and snorkeling due to its clear waters and rocky shores, providing easy access to the ocean.

Visiting Comino in the high season and the the Blue Lagoon seems too busy for you? I recommend taking the short walk along the dirt trail to San Niklaw Bay, where you’ll find a much more relaxed atmosphere.

Saint Niklaw Bay on Comino Island, Malta

11. Santa Marija Bay

Santa Marija Bay (also written Santa Maria Bay), is a small pebble beach in a sheltered cove on the northern end of Comino, just past San Niklaw Bay.

This is one of the most popular beaches on Comino Island and is where you will find the Comino Island Hotel. Along the shore, there are sun chairs available for rent and protective umbrellas to rest under. Further along the bay travelers will also find a small boat ramp, which is a good location to take a kayak from.

Additionally, you’ll even find a small church at Santa Marija Bay called the Chapel of Our Lady’s Return from Egypt.

Santa Marija Bay in on Comino

12. Santa Marija Caves

For me, the amazing natural attractions on Comino are what make this place so special. By far, one of the most awe-inspiring and beautiful places on the island are the Santa Marija Caves.

Picture the most vibrant and clear turquoise water you’ve ever seen, leading into a broad cavern. The summer sun reflects off the white bottom, painting the cave roof with glimmering light.

Due to its popularity, all Comino Island tours stop by the Santa Marija Caves and most would consider it up there with the two most unmissable things to do on Comino Island, after the Blue Lagoon.

Santa Marija Caves, Comino Island, Malta

Travel Tip: For adventure travlelers exploring Comino Island by land, it’s possible to walk through to one of the Santa Marija Caves. From Santa Marija Bay, follow the rocky flats to the east until you come to a small cavern entrance. Here, you can climb down and enter the cave to pop out on the other side.

Santa Marija Caves, Comino Island, Malta

13. Ġebel Comino – Comino’s Highest Point

Feel like getting adventurous? Why not hike to Ġebel Comino, the highest point on the island? Okay, at less than 70 meters, hiking to this viewpoint is no big feat. However, the vantage point is still well worth the effort, with expansive views across the island, Malta, and even Gozo.

To get to this viewpoint on Comino, simply walk past the closed down pig farm (Comino Pig Farm) on the eastern side. You’ll see a worn trail leading to the top of the hill. There’s also a stack of stones at the top, marking the highest point.

Comino Island coast line

Did you know? Comino is regarded as a bird sanctuary, where many seasonal species including Wryneck, Skylark, Grey Herons, Egrets, and Blue Rock Thrush visit and nest on the island.

14. Elephant Head Rock (Elephant Arch)

Elephant Head Rock, or Elephant Arch is one of the most unique natural attractions on Comino. This huge limestone arch is located on the eastern cliffside and only visible from a boat or kayak.

As you can probably make out from the photo below, this natural rock formation looks exactly like an elephant’s head, including its trunk. This spot isn’t great for swimming but does make for a great photo opportunity.

Elaphant arch on Gozo Island, Malta

15. Il-Batterija ta’ Santa Marija & the Natural Arch

Moving around the island to the far southern side, we’ll find the Il-Batterija ta’ Santa Marija, or Saint Mary’s battery or the Comino Battery.

This coastal cannon battery was built by the Order of Saint John as far back as 1715 and served as a primary defense battery for the island of Comino. The gun platform, parapet, and blockhouse sit high on the cliffline and are visible but largely unacessessible from the sea.

Just beneath this battery is another natural arch. For those making their way around the island on a tour or a boat, stopping by and perhaps swimming in the clear waters beneath this little arch is in my opinion one of the most underrated things to do on Comino!

16. Hike Around Comino Island

Want to explore more than just Comino’s beaches, lagoons, and sea caves? Strap up your hiking shoes and head inland to discover a neat network of unsealed roads and worn tracks leading to many hidden gems. If you’re feeling up to it, you could even rent a mountain bike from Gozo or Malta and bring it over!

Being a small island, it takes roughly 2-3 hours to walk around the circumference, stopping at highlights and viewpoints like the Crystal Lagoon cliffs, Santa Marija Bay, the Comino Battery, or even the far-reaching headland at Lantern Point (Il- Ponta tal- Irqieqa).

Discover the Malta Blue Lagoon, one of the most beautiful natural clear water lagoons in the Mediterranean.

If you search for photos of Malta, chances are you’ll see the iconic orange limestone cliffs dropping into turquoise, crystal clear water. This is the Blue Lagoon, Malta’s most famous natural attraction.

In this travel guide, I’ll detail everything you need to know about visiting this amazing natural attraction, including how to get here from Malta or Gozo, what to expect when you arrive, and some essential tips for having a great experience.

Blue Lagoon in Malta

About Malta's Blue Lagoon

Malta's Blue Lagoon is a protected cove between the smallest of Malta's main islands, Comino, and the tiny island called Cominotto (essentially small Comino).

This wide, sheltered lagoon is quite shallow, with a pure, white sandy bottom resulting in some of the clearest water and best beaches in Malta. Due to its natural beauty, Comino Island is also considered a nature reserve.

This makes it the perfect location to experience some of the best nature in Malta, from exploring its epic sea caves to snorkeling in tranquil waters!

While this is a beautiful location, it can get a little crowded during the summer months. However, that doesn't mean that it's a tourist trap or that it should be avoided. In fact, I'd say that a trip to the Blue Lagoon is one of Malta's must-do activities.

Read on to find out how you can escape the crowds.

Malta's Blue lagoon

Where is the Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon is located on the west side of the island of Comino, between the main island, Malta, and Gozo. Comino is a small, rocky island spanning roughly 3.5 square kilometers (1.3 sq mi) and is usually accessible via ferry or one of the many small boat day trips.

Below I've pinned the exact Google Maps location of the Blue Lagoon in Malta. Below I'll outline the best ways to reach it.

Map of the Malta Blue Lagoon

How to Get to the Blue Lagoon From Malta Island

Since this amazing lagoon is one of the country's most famous tourist attractions, there are several popular ways to get here from the main island of Malta.

The best options are:

  • Day Trip: Boat Tours
  • Private Boat Trip
  • Public Transport & Ferry from Ċirkewwa (northern port in Malta)

Read on for more details.

1. Blue Lagoon & Comino Boat Tour (Or Catamaran) From Malta

The first and easiest way to get to the Blue Lagoon is to book a Comino boat tour. You can book this day trip online and it includes 4.5 hours to spend at the Blue Lagoon as well as all of the Comino highlights including:

  • Crystal Lagoon
  • Santa Mariia Cave
  • Elephants Head
  • Santa Maria Bay
  • St. Nicholas Bay
  • Ahrax Cave

This Comino Blue Lagoon & Caves Boat Cruise linked above currently offers the most bang for buck, but the boat is large. Alternatively, if you prefer a small-group tour, you could book a catamaran cruise or private tour (below) instead.

Luzzu boat trip Comino

2. Malta Private Boat Tour of Comino

Travelers in a group or those who don't want to share a boat with other tourists also have the option to book a private tour on small speed boats.

In fact, the first time I visited the Blue Lagoon this is exactly what I did. The trip I went on was organized by Outdoor Explorers, which is a local business run by two brothers.

On this trip, we visited all of the epic sea caves, and our skipper Joseph even drove inside some of the smaller ones, which was awesome! I highly recommend this trip to anyone considering a private tour of the Blue Lagoon.

3. The Blue Lagoon Ferry from ĊIRKEWWA

Willing to spend more time than money? Travelers looking for the cheapest way to get to the Blue Lagoon from Malta can take the small shuttle boat ferries from the northern Malta port of Ċirkewwa.

This is the same port where you would take the car ferry from Malta to the island of Gozo. The Blue Lagoon ferry departs every 30 minutes from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM and costs 13 euros per person.

To get here, you can take the public transport buses to Ċirkewwa from the majority of the tourist towns in Malta. For reference, the distance to the departure point is roughly 8 kilometers from Mellieħa or 14 kilometers from Buġibba.

How to Get to the Blue Lagoon from Gozo Island

Travelers staying on Gozo have similar options for getting to the Blue Lagoon.

1. Private Boat Tour to the Blue Lagoon from Gozo

If you're interested in the private boat tours from Gozo to the Blue Lagoon. I again recommend booking a trip with Outdoor Explorers since these are the guys I've had the best experience with.

When booking, you can select your departure point for Malta or Gozo.

Blue Lagoon Boat Trip

2. Kayaking from Ħondoq ir-Rummien Beach

The most unique and probably the funnest way to get to the Blue Lagoon is by crossing the channel separating Gozo and Comino by kayak.

Due to local safety rules, you'll need to organize this as part of a tour with a licensed guide. Luckily, you can book a kayaking tour with Kayak Gozo.

This departs from Ħondoq ir-Rummien Beach on the south side of Gozo Island. While the distance looks vast, we managed to kayak over in around 15 minutes!

In my opinion, exploring the Blue Lagoon and the amazing hidden coves on Comino by kayak is the best way to experience the beauty of this island. Not only does this option offer more freedom, you'll also be able to escape the crowds by getting to some locations not accessible on foot.

3. Blue Lagoon Ferry Transfer from Mgarr Gozo

The cheapest way to get to the Blue Lagoon from Gozo is the local shuttle boat ferry departing from Mgarr Gozo. Simply head to the port and you'll see the Blue Lagoon ferry shuttle signs.

The price is only 7 euros for the return trip, which is great if you have your own lunch and snorkeling equipment.

The 5 Beaches at the Malta Blue Lagoon

Did you know that there are five sandy beaches at Malta's Blue Lagoon? If the main beach near the small boat jetty is too busy, then make sure to check out some of the others as well.

Blue lagoon aerial photo

1. Blue Lagoon Beach

The main beach at the Blue Lagoon is a very tiny strip of white sand right beside the boat jetty. This beach is very beautiful and sinks slowly into clear, shallow water– perfect for swimming!

2. "Comino Beach"

The second popular beach is located just a short walk south of the first, following a leveled limestone path to a thin strand covered by sun umbrellas. Again, this beach can get very busy!

3. Cominotto Beach

Next up is Cominotto Beach, found directly across the lagoon on Cominotto Island. Visitors have the option to swim or take a SUP across to Cominotto, which is equally as beautiful but harbors fewer food stalls.

4. "blue Lagoon Area 2"

Taking the short trail north towards San Niklaw Bay, you'll notice a short detour path on your left. This leads around the corner from the main Blue Lagoon to another small bay that is a great place to escape the crowds.

The beach here is a great option for snorkeling.

5. Natural Arch at the Blue Lagoon

The final beach at the Blue Lagoon is a small but very picturesque natural arch. Due to Malta Island's unique limestone landscape, arches like this are common around the coast. In fact, there are even a couple more on Comino.

This particular arch sits above clear water and beside it you will find a small beach. Similarly to the previous beach, this area is excellent for snorkeling.

Swimming & Snorkeling at the Blue Lagoon

By far, the most popular activity at the Blue Lagoon is enjoying the lagoon itself. This means stepping out from the sun umbrellas and exploring the tranquil waters of this one-of-a-kind bay!

I recommend swimming or snorkeling over to Cominotto Island and exploring the cave there.

Exploring Cominotto Island

Cominotto Island is a tiny islet directly west of Comino. When visiting Malta's Blue Lagoon, make sure to swim or take a kayak or SUP to experience this perfect slice of paradise.

Upon arriving at the Blue Lagoon, a quick glance over at Cominotto Beach will reveal the Cominotto Cave. This is one of the scenic sea caves of Comino which featured in the Troy movie.

Hiking to the Crystal Lagoon

Travelers taking the Comino boat tour from Gozo or Malta can skip this since the best boat trips always include a stop at the Crystal Lagoon.

However, the sad fact is that most independent travelers miss this magical bay, hidden just south of the Blue Lagoon.

Crystal Lagoon, Malta

While smaller, this bay is equally as beautiful and features even more caves to explore. One of these is the Tunnel Cave, which is a 30-meter-long natural tunnel great for swimming and even scuba diving.

During my time exploring Comino Island, I always made it back to the Crystal Lagoon, since it's one of the most beautiful places in Malta but attracts a fraction of the tourists of its more famous neighbor.

Exploring the Rest of Comino Island

Everyone comes to Comino to see the Blue Lagoon. But, what if I told you that this tiny island of Malta has so much more to offer?

Whether you're looking for beautiful, secluded bays, impressive sea caves, or hiking trails, Comino island is a blast to explore. Its tiny size means that you can walk around most of the island in a day.

However, the best way to see all the highlights is to jump on one of the boat tours. Sites you can't miss include:

  • San Niklaw Bay
  • Santa Marija Bay
  • Santa Marija Cave
  • The Elephant Arch
  • Il-Batterija ta' Santa Marija (Santa Maria Battery) & Natural Arch
  • Popeye's Cave
  • Saint Mary's Tower

Tips for Visiting Malta's Blue Lagoon

Here are some quick travel tips for visiting the Blue Lagoon in Malta.

  • Visit early - many of the photos of the Blue Lagoon you see on this blog were taken at around 8 AM. However, roughly an hour later, the place became flooded with tourists. I recommend booking the earliest tour possible or opting for the private tour option if you want to beat the crowds.
  • Or visit later - not a morning person? Crowds often disperse in the late afternoon. During this time, the sun is also less harsh, making it a great time to visit the Blue Lagoon.
  • Avoid Sundays - Sunday is the busiest day to visit Comino and Gozo, as locals like to head over from the main island. Saturdays are also quite busy.
  • Bring sun protection - Malta can get very hot, especially during the summer months (high season). Make sure to bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.
  • There are food stalls - you'll find a couple of local food stalls on the island of Comino, just near the Blue Lagoon. The prices are a little higher for obvious reasons.
  • Jellyfish in Malta - one thing to look out for when swimming in Malta is the presence of stinging jellyfish. Don't worry, none of these are very dangerous, but just leave an annoying sting. The Maltese Island Weather site is useful to plan ahead.

Blue Lagoon Travel Faqs

Is Blue Lagoon worth visiting?

Yes, visiting the lagoon is one of the best things to do in Malta! Of course, you'll hear some people saying that the Blue Lagoon is overrated and too busy. However, chances are these people visited during peak hour on a weekend and didn't explore the island.

What is the cheapest way to get to the Blue Lagoon?

The cheapest way to get to the Blue Lagoon is to take the shuttle ferries from Ċirkewwa on Malta Island for 13 euros or from Mgarr Gozo for 7 euros. While these shuttle ferries are the cheapest, they're not the best option by any means since there is so much to see on Comino than just the lagoon itself.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit the Blue Lagoon is between May and September. During the winter months, the sea around Malta can get very rough. To avoid the crowds, try to visit early or late in the afternoon.

Is the Blue Lagoon the best swimming spot in Malta?

The Blue Lagoon is well regarded as the most beautiful natural attraction in Malta. Additionally, it is one of the best places for swimming because it is very well sheltered and has a smooth, sandy bottom.

Why is the Blue Lagoon so famous?

Malta's Blue Lagoon is world-famous for its amazing crystal clear water and sandy shores.

Can you stay on Comino Island?

There is one resort on the island named Comino Hotel. While it doesn't have the best reputation, it enjoys a monopoly as it is the only accommodation with a permit.

Discover Malta’s Crystal Lagoon on Comino Island, a picturesque bay that is one of the most beautiful places in the country!

Everyone knows about Malta’s Blue Lagoon on Comino Island. However, many don’t realize that just around the bay is another amazing crystal clear water bay that is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, cave exploring, and relaxing– without the crowds!

In this guide, I’ll reveal to you why I believe that Crystal Lagoon is an absolute must-visit destination in Malta. I’ll also break down exactly how to get to the lagoon from Gozo Island and from Malta, with plenty of photos to inspire you to visit!

About the Malta Crystal Lagoon

The Crystal Lagoon in Malta is a wide, sheltered bay edged by tall, limestone cliffs. Due to a mostly sandy bottom at a depth of around 5-6 meters, the azure water in the Crystal Lagoon is clear and creates a beautiful pallete of turqoise and deep blues.

Coral Lagoon Malta

Many consider the bay to be a great snorkel site, and divers also enjoy several reef, cavern, and wreck dives at the perimeter of the lagoon.

Additionally, just outside the cove are several small sea caves to explore, as well as a long, 30-meter tunnel which you can swim through.

Visiting the Crystal Lagoon is an excellent choice, especially during the high season when the popular Blue Lagoon is crowded.

Read on to find out how to get here, and what to expect (with more photos).

Boats at the Coral Lagoon in Malta

Where is the Crystal Lagoon?

The Crystal Lagoon is located on the western side of the tiny island of Comino, between the island of Gozo and Malta.

Below I've pinned the exact location.

The Crystal Lagoon is accessible via a short walking track from the Blue Lagoon, or via a boat or kayak from other parts of Comino like San Niklaw Bay or Santa Marija Bay.

For those on Gozo or Malta, I've included several ways to get to Comino below.

How to Get to the Crystal Lagoon From Malta

There are three ways to get to the Crystal Lagoon from Malta. These options inlucde a boat or catamaran trip, a private boat tour, or a bus and ferry from Ċirkewwa.

Let's break down each option.

1. Boat or Catamaran Tour of Comino Island from Malta

For those staying in popular areas of Malta Island, including Sliema, St.Julians, of Buġibba, the most convenient way to get to Crystal Lagoon is to book a Comino Island boat excursion.

There are several of these trips available to book online and the best tours including all the highlights on Comino, including the Crystal Lagoon and:

  • The Blue Lagoon
  • Santa Mariia Cave
  • Elephants Head
  • Santa Maria Bay
  • St. Nicholas Bay
  • Ahrax Cave

This Comino Blue Lagoon & Caves Boat Cruise is currently offering the most bang-for-buck, but the boat is large. Alternatively, you could book a catamaran cruise or private tour instead.

2. Private Boat Tour of Comino Island with Outdoor Explorers

During my trip to Malta, I visited Comino several times. The first time was on a private boat tour organized by Outdoor Explorers and I'd say this is by far the best way to experience the Crystal Lagoon, Blue Lagoon, and other amazing locations on the island.

Boat on Comino Island

Booking a private boat tour is a little bit pricier, but is great value, especially if you are traveling in a group. These trips depart from Gozo or from Malta.

Our skipper Joseph was an incredible boat driver, and took us inside many of the tiny grottos and sea caves. Additionally to the main tourist sites, he showed us some picturesque spots and off-the-beaten-path locations on Comino that most of the other tourists miss!

Highly recommend.

3. Blue Lagoon Ferry from Ċirkewwa

The cheapest way to get to Comino and the Crystal Lagoon from Malta is to take the daily ferry from the port of Ċirkewwa (ferry terminal to Gozo). This ferry departs every 30 minutes from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM and costs 13 euros per person.

While this is the cheapest boat price, it may prove difficult to get to this terminal for many travelers on Malta since you'll either need to drive to the terminal or take the public bus.

The distance to the departure point is roughly 8 kilometers from Mellieħa, or 14 kilometers from Buġibba.

Once you arrive at the Blue Lagoon Ferry area, you can walk the costal track for roughly 700 meters (765 yards) down to the Crystal Lagoon.

How To Get to the Crystal Lagoon From Gozo

Gozo is closer to Comino than Malta Island, which means it is a great place to base yourself to explore all the attractions including the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon.

However, there are no shared boat trips or Comino Island tours running from Gozo.

However, you can book a kayaking tour with Kayak Gozo or a private boat tour with Outdoor Explorers (same as above).

There is also a ferry departing from Mgarr Gozo to the Blue Lagoon for 7 euros for the return trip.

Kayaking on Comino Island

Kayaking from Gozo to Comino

The second time I explored the beautiful Comino Island, I did so by crossing over from Gozo on a kayak.

Due to local regulations, this is only possible with a licensed guide. I highly recommend Kayak Gozo, departing from Ħondoq ir-Rummien beach on the southern end of Gozo Island.

This trip runs for roughly 3 hours, and depending on weather conditions, stops by many of the popular caves, the Blue Lagoon, and the Crystal Lagoon.

What to Expect at the Crystal Lagoon

Now that you know all of the ways to get to the Crystal Lagoon in Malta, let's dive into what to expect at this amazing natural attraction!

Swimming & Snorkeling in Crystal Clear Water

The Crystal Lagoon's primary attraction is its natural beauty and crystal clear, turquoise waters. The sheltered cove ensures that the sea is usually much calmer inside the bay than outside (depending on the wind). As a result, it makes it one of the best places to go swimming and snorkeling.

We swam and snorkeled all around the bay and took some great photos. The white sandy bottom reflects the sunlight perfectly, creating clear, blue water and great visibility.

Snorkeling on Comino Island, Malta

The Crystal Lagoon is also a breeding ground for many small species of fish. Consequently, you'll often spot many schools swimming in the bay.

Travel Tip: Most of the boat tours to Comino include snorkeling gear.

Long Tunnel Cave

Comino Island is known for its amazing azure water sea caves edging its coast.

After exploring nearly every cave on Comino by boat, kayak, and on foot, I still consider the Tunnel Cave at the Crystal Lagoon to be the best on the island.

This cave is a long, 30-meter natural tunnel located on the west side of Crystal Lagoon. While slightly too small for boats, adventurous travelers can swim all the way through the cave.

Tunnel Cave on Comino

If you visit during the early morning or in the late afternoon, the light reflecting into the cave gives off an incredible blue glow in the water.

Cliff Jumping at the Crystal Lagoon

If you're up for a fun cliff jump, head over to the limestone rocks on the northwest end of the bay. You'll see immediately where to jump from, as there is a high rocky path with deep water below it.

The jump is roughly 6-7 meters, which is quite a fun one. Remember to always do a depth check before cliff jumping!

The Epic Small Sea Cave

While not as famous as the tunnel cave, I recommend that everyone visiting the Crystal Lagoon head over to the small sea cave on the eastern side (near the rocky beach).

It doesn't look like much from the outside. However, if you swim inside you'll see that it opens up to a wide, shallow-water grotto with smooth, white sand inside.

Sea Cave in Malta

Popeye's cave at Crystal Lagoon

Another interesting natural feature at the Crystal Lagoon is the remarkable Popeye's Cave. The access point is just outside of the lagoon to the east.

This cave has a collapsed ceiling similarly to the Coral Lagoon on Malta Island. However, this time there are large boulders sticking out of the water.

Just like at Popeye Village, this small cave got its name from being a filming location for the Popeye movie. The Maltese name is L-Għar ta’ Bla Saqaf.

Crystal Lagoon Dive Site

The Crystal Lagoon is also a popular scuba diving site. Divers usually enter through the long tunnel when the weather conditions are good. There are also several large boulders and another smaller tunnel with an overhang.

If you're interested in diving on Comino Island, I highly recommend checking out the P31 wreck, which is just outside the Crystal Lagoon. Based on my experience, OrangeShark Divers is the best dive center in Malta.

Quick Tips for Visiting the Crystal Lagoon

  • Most boat trips only operate during the summer months (May to September)
  • If you book a private boat tour or take the ferry, try to get here as early as possible to avoid crowds.
  • Remember to pack water and sunblock
  • Travelers still planning their Malta adventures: don't forget adventure travel insurance.
