Earnslaw Burn New Zealand is a hidden gem of an overnight hike from Glenorchy. Flowing glacial rivers, valley waterfalls and spectacular glacier views await.

The Earnslaw Burn hike is an unforgettable overnight hike near Glenorchy. If you’re up for an accessible, yet off-the-beaten-path track with incredible views, then you’ve come to the right place.

While the trails of the Routeburn and Kepler can get crowded in the peak season, hikers heading to the Earnslaw Burn will probably have the trail all to themselves! I found it mind-boggling that this track wasn’t more popular since the views at times easily rival some of the great walks.

Where is Earnslaw Burn?

The Earnslaw Burn and glacier are part of Mount Earnslaw, located in the Mt Aspiring National Park. Access to the track is near the town of Glenorchy, approximately one hour's drive from Queenstown.

Tip: How to Get Around in New Zealand

Rent a car! New Zealand is very safe for motorists & driving is the best way to explore the country.

Make sure to book in advance using a comparison site like DiscoverCars to get the best deals. Or, if you want a camper, my favourite in NZ is Spaceships.

How to get to the Earnslaw Burn Track

The start of the Earnslaw Burn track is located on a bend on Lover's Leap Road. There are no obvious signs to this hike, so finding it without a bit of research can prove difficult.

GPS coordinates: 44°44'25.3"S 168°24'37.7"E

From Glenorchy, follow Glenorchy-Paradise Rd for approximately 15 minutes before turning right onto Lover's Leap Road. From here, keep driving until you see the obvious "right-angle" bend. Just before this bend is a flat area where there may or may not be cars parked. This is where you'll begin the hike.

These roads are mostly gravel. However, any 2WD can make the drive in good conditions.

Finding the Trailhead

Even once you arrive at the makeshift "car park" you have to jump a farmer's gate and walk along the obvious track until you can finally spot the trailhead signage.

From here, the track is relatively easy to follow.

EARNSLAW BURN START POINT

For Hobbit Fans: Did you know that Earnslaw Burn New Zealand was featured in Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit". Walking the track, you'll be following in the footsteps of Bilbo and the dwarves as they continue on from Rivendell.

What to Expect on the Earnslaw Burn Track

The Earnslaw Burn is a geological watercourse carved through the mountainside by the run-off from the Earnslaw Glacier. The track follows the "burn" or glacial river, within the forest and along slopes of the ridge before breaking out into a tussock valley with incredible views of the Earnslaw Burn Glacier.

  • Earnslaw Burn Track Distance: 22 km Return to the Tussock valley & 30 km return to Glacier
  • Hike Difficulty: Fairly strenuous with lots of uneven ground
  • Total Elevation Gain: 1350 m (return)

First Section: Beech Forest

The track begins with an incremental climb through the beech forest on private land before hopping over another fence.

EARNSLAW BURN HIKE

From here, it's a long, rocky and muddy track through the forest for 11 KM. The majority of this hike is within the forest, which is beautiful but can get a little bit repetitive.

There is also a lot of windfall and mud/rock slides along the track. Make sure to check the DOC for updates and to follow the orange markers which mark the route.

This section took us approximately 4 hours, with many dips and climbs along the way.

Tussock Valley, Waterfalls and Glacier Views

After finally breaking through trees, we were immediately awarded with incredible views of Mt Earnslaw and the glacier from afar. Soon after, we had to hop over rocks cross the river, which I could imagine would be fairly dangerous after heavy downpours.

EARNSLAW GLACIER HIKE

From here, the marked track ends. However, you can follow the tracks all the way along the river to the base of the glacier. We decided to cross a shallow section of the freezing river, which flowed gently at around knee-height on this occasion.

GLENORCHY HIKING GLACIAL TRAILS

From here, we climbed a small bushy hill for incredible glacial views. This part isn't exactly a track, but you can see where we went for the viewpoint on the GPX file below.

You might notice some helicopters flying over the valley and over to the glacier. This is the alternative and much easier way to reach the Earnslaw Burn. I'd imagine the views from up there would be absolutely incredible if you have a sneaky $900 to spare for an Earnslaw Burn helicopter flight.

Overnight Camping Spots Near the Earnslaw Burn

It's possible to camp in the tussock valley beside the burn for free. The best camping spot in my opinion is found shortly after breaking out of the forest, just beside the track.

CAMPING SPOTS AT EARNSLAW BURN ROCKY BIVVY

This is the levelest ground you'll find, complete with a large rock for a table and a campfire setup. This spot is quite a bit far from the glacier though, so it might be a good idea to set up your tent, chuck your bags in and make your way to the glacier for the afternoon before returning.

If you'd prefer, there are also several level areas along the track to the glacier where you can pitch a tent, including right near the glacier itself. You'll have great views at these spots, and the ground is flat enough to have a decent sleep.

The Earnslaw Burn Bivvy

If you didn't bring a tent, then it's possible to get some shelter at the Earnslaw burn bivvy. This is a large rock bivvy formed by overhanging rocks. This is located on your right, just past the first camping spot I mentioned.

Earnslaw Burn Falls

The Earnslaw Burn hike was in my opinion one of the most scenic hikes in New Zealand. Along the track to the glacier, there are an array of endless waterfalls on either side. The most noteable was the large, multi-leveled plungers on the west of the valley.

If you make it as far as the Earnslaw Burn glacier, you'll also see dozens of epic waterfalls cascading down the cliff from the melting glacier.

37 Best Things to do in Queenstown New Zealand

Okay, with a quick list of the top-3 tours out of the way, let's get into the real list! Remember, even with close to 40 activities, there are just so many epic things to do and see in Queenstown that this long list barely scratches the surface.

Nevertheless, these travel tips, outdoor activities, and adventure ideas will surely help you plan your New Zealand adventures.

1. Bungee Jumping with AJ Hacket

By far, the most iconic Queenstown adrenaline activity is a bungee jump with AJ Hackett.

In fact, many Queenstowners consider this a rite of passage!

Having been around since 1988, AJ Hackett is the world's best, safest and biggest bungee jumping company. If you've always wanted to try bungee, then there's no better place than the birthplace of bungee in the adventure capital of New Zealand!

You'll have a few options; The Ledge (47 metres), Kawarau Bridge (43 metres), and the Nevis (137 metres).

2. The Skyline Gondola Ride

Did you know that Queenstown is home to the Southern hemisphere's steepest cable car?

Taking the Skyline Gondola offers great views of Queenstown. At the top, you'll have impressive panoramic views from Bob's Peak overlooking the town, the Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu.

There are also plenty of Queenstown activities to choose from at the top, including the Luge and the Nevis bungy.

The cost per adult is $44, however, there is an online deal where you can purchase a Gondola + 2x Luge rides and save some money.

3. The Queenstown Luge

Located right beside the gondola, the Skyline Luge is a popular adventure activity worth your time.

The luge track snakes and turns through banks, tunnels and forest with constant views of the Remarkables, surrounding mountains, and Lake Wakatipu. When it comes to luge rides, I'd say this has to be the most scenic on earth!

4. TSS Earnslaw Cruise to Walter Peak High Country

If you search online, the most-recommended cruise activity in Queenstown is onboard the 1912 vessel, the TSS Earnslaw.

This unique boat as an onboard museum, and cruises down the beautiful lake Wakatipu before disembarking at Walter Peak High Country Station for a Gourmet BBQ.

5. Tiki Trail to the Skyline Gondola

For those of you who'd prefer to lace up the boots and hit the trails then Queenstown also has some of the most accessible hiking trails in New Zealand.

Just beside the Skyling Gondola is Queenstown's Tiki Trail, which twists and turns steeply up the mountain to Bob's Peak and the Skyline Gondola.

This is an enjoyable hike passing through dense birch and fir forest with sounds of native birds and wildlife. It's certainly a peaceful hike until you unexpectedly cross the downhill mountain bike trails which is a great reminder that you are in the adventure capital of the world!

6. Ben Lomond Track

Now for the best hike in Queenstown - the Ben Lomond summit track. This is one of the most epic views you'll find in town!

Continuing on from the Skyling Gondola, the track continues around the bend to a grassy, hilly plain that climbs gently to the Ben Lomond saddle. The final summit push to Ben Lomond's 1748M peak is accessible from the saddle and can be attempted by most fit hikers!

Not only is the Ben Lomond hike one of the best walks or tramps in the area, but many also consider the journey to the summit one of the absolute top things to do in Queenstown New Zealand.

At the top, you'll get insane views of the Remarkables Range, Lake Wakatipu, and the Queenstown foreshore. The summit of Ben Lomond is one of my favourite places in the country. The view from the top is easily worth the effort.

Queenstown is one of the best places on earth for downhill mountain biking. There is a huge international and local scene here and Queenstown is also the stage for several downhill competitions every year.

There are hundreds of maintained tracks ranging from beginners to professionals. If you don't have your own bike, it's possible to rent one from several bike shops in Queenstown.

You'll also find the best resource on Queenstown bike trails on the Queenstown Trail website.

By far the best way to see Queenstown is from the sky.

There are loads of different helicopter tours departing from Queenstown including budget-friendly, 20-minute Lake and Remarkables flights, glacier trips, and even half-day flights to Milford Sound!

Queenstown is the doorstep for a multitude of epic canyons, gorges, and rapid rivers. Visiting Skippers Canyon is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon. Here, you can do a few short walks and even swim in the turquoise flowing waters of the Shotover River.

Near the car park, you will also find the Edith Cavell Bridge, which is undeniably one of the most scenic bridges I've ever come across!

Screaming around tight canyons bends and skimming across seemingly inches of water at over 85 kilometres an hour, this is definitely one for adrenaline junkies.

Surprisingly, the Shotover Jet is one of the most affordable activities on this lest of best things. todo in Queenstown. If you book online, you also get a bus transfer from Queenstown.

Yep, just 15 minutes from Queenstown and you can be walking through ancient beech forest towards steep-walled canyons.

Canyoneering trips in Queenstown are top-notch and most include ziplines, abseiling, waterfalls, cliff jumps and everything you'd expect from an epic canyoning adventure.

Queenstown canyoning guides are very skilled and no experience is typically required.

12. Take a Tour to Milford Sound & Doubtful Sound

A trip to New Zealand's wild Fjordland sounds is one of the best things you can do in the country. Best of all, it's very easy and relatively inexpensive to book a day trip to both Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound directly from Queenstown.

A cruise down the famous fjords is the best way to take in the sights of the snow-capped mountains of the Southern Alps. This is the very best of New Zealand's wild landscapes. From the towering Mitre Peak to lush rainforest carved by numerous plummeting waterfalls down the sheer cliffs, it's difficult to understand just how incredible the Fjordlands are without visiting them yourself.

Tip: For those with their own car or camper, you can take the scenic drive to Milford Sound by yourself and book a sound cruise directly from the National Park for under $60.

14. Hike to Queenstown Hill for Sunset

Queenstown Hill is probably the most iconic sunset hike in town. This hike is much easier than the Tiki trail, yet just as rewarding - especially for sunset or sunrise.

The viewpoint at the top of Queenstown Hill offers arguably the best views of the town, as well as clear views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables.

15. Play Frisbee Golf in the Queenstown Gardens

After a long day of adrenaline-pumping adventure activities and hikes, what better way to unwind than to have a beer or two and play frisbee golf with your mates in the Queenstown gardens?

But, what's frisbee golf you may ask? It's exactly that. The game has similar rules and objectives as golf, yet is played with frisbees.

This is one of the best free things to do in Queenstown if you have your own frisbee. Otherwise, you can rent them from most sports and outdoor stores in Queenstown.

Queenstown Park, New Zealand

16. Swim in Lake Wakatipu

Queenstown's resident lake is one of the most picturesque in New Zealand and also makes for a great place to cool off in the summer months!

However, this is a mountain lake, so prepare to get a little chilly!

Swimming in Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown, New Zealand

17. Take in the Lakeside Sunset Views

Not looking to leave town and want a great sunset spot? Why not head down to the lakeside boardwalk to unwind with a stunning Queenstown sunset?

The boardwalk and lakeside area usually attracts dozens of groups, so it's also a great place to meet other travelers.

Sunset from Queenstown

18. Hike at Bob's Cove

The Bob's Cove track is one of the best bang-for-buck hikes in Queenstown in terms of views! What I mean by this is that after just a very short yet scenic walk around the edge of Bob's Cove and a small hill climb, you will be rewarded with one of the best coastal views near Queenstown!

Even if you're not into hiking, I highly recommend visiting Bob's Cove if you're wondering what to do in Queenstown.

BOB'S COVE TRACK QUEENSTOWN

19. Head to Moke Lake

Moke Lake is a more off-the-beaten-path mountain lake hiking and camping area just a stone-throw away from Queenstown.

Of course, you'll need your own transport to drive the short, 20-minute road to Moke Lake. If you are exploring New Zealand in a non-self-contained camper, then visiting Moke Lake is also one of the best and most affordable places to spend the night!

MOKE LAKE LOOP in New Zealand

20. Drive the Scenic Road to Glenorchy

The Glenorchy-Queenstown Road has to be one of the world's most scenic drives! Following the edge of Lake Wakatipu, the road winds gently through the mountain ranges with mind-blowing views of snow-capped peaks and distant glaciers along every turn.

There are also several pull-over areas on the side of the road where you can stop and snap some shots or simply admire the view!

QUEENSTOWN TO GLENORCHY DRIVE

21. Hike the Routeburn Track

The Routeburn Track is one of New Zealand's Great Walks. In my opinion, it's also probably the best of all the Great Walks in New Zealand, and that's saying something!

Although the Routeburn departs from nearby Glenorchy, many hikers depart early from their base in Queenstown to hike a section of it on a day trip or the whole thing!

Lake Harris Routeburn Day Hike

22. The Earnslaw Burn Hike

Hobbit fans rejoice! The Earnslaw Burn hike follows the path of Bilbo and his companions as they march on their quest through Middle Earth.

Even if you're not a Tolkien fan, the Earnslaw Burn hike is still one of the best hikes in New Zealand and certainly one of the best things to do near Queenstown. The track dips and climbs through dense beech forest before opening up into a spectacular glacial burn with a track that leads all the way to the Earnslaw glacier.

Similarly to the Routeburn, this hike departs from neighbouring Glenorchy, but can easily be reached from Queenstown following a quick drive on the scenic lakeside road.

23. Lord of the Rings Tour

Did you know that both the North and South Island of New Zealand was the location of all Lord of the Rings filming sets? Of course you do!

There are hundreds of different locations that you can discover that were featured in the epic trilogy. There is a very popular LOTR Tour that you can book online, covering most of the iconic destinations in this southern region near Queenstown.

24. Stand-Up Paddleboarding and Kayaking on Lake Wakatipu

Especially popular in summer, renting a kayak or SUP on Queenstown's Lake Wakatipu is one of the best things to do in Queenstown.

Make sure to pick a calm day, because strong winds are common in Queenstown, especially in the afternoons!

QUEENSTOWN LAKE WAKATIPU

25. Drive to the Remarkables Ski Area

The Remarkables mountain range is one truly worthy of the name. The constant Queenstown backdrop also features a great ski area that is very popular during the winter months.

Even if you're visiting outside of pow season, driving up the access road to the Remarkables Ski area is still a worthwhile trip. You will have to pay $10 during summer, but don't worry the views are definitely worth it!

SHOTOVER AND SADDLE VIEWPOINT AT LAKE ALTA

26. The Lake Alta Hike

While the Remarkables Ski Field probably deserves its own spot on the list of the best Queenstown attractions, there's a secret lake hike worth checking out year-round! Located right beside the Remarkables Ski Field, this is a short track to one of Queenstown's most scenic alpine lakes; Lake Alta.

To access this hike, you will need to take the ski field access road mentioned above. There is a sign once you arrive at the parking lot which leads the way.

I also found a little-known track that climbs the saddle to a spectacular viewpoint of the Lake and of Shotover country below. If views are your goal, then the Lake Alta hike is one of the best things to do in Queenstown!

LAKE ALTA QUEENSTOWN HIKE

27. Visit Coronet Peak

On the other side of Shotover country is another of Queenstown's popular ski fields. Similarly to the Remarkables ski area, there is a well-maintained, yet steep access road to the top.

SHOTOVER AND SADDLE VIEWPOINT AT LAKE ALTA

28. Skydiving

Having adrenaline withdrawals? Skydiving in Queenstown is arguably the most beautiful place to do so in the entire world!

With a huge skydiving scene, there is also loads of competition, meaning that prices are actually pretty reasonable.

29. Paragliding

For those not ready to jump out of a plane, how about launching off a mountain?

If you've already arrived in Queenstown, then you probably would have already noticed the hundreds of paragliders and hang-gliders that dot the skies above Queenstown. That's because paragliding is one of Queenstown's most popular adventure activities.

Though you don't need to be a pro to partake in the fun. There are many sports and adventure stores in Queenstown that can hook you up with a tandem, or you could compare prices and book online.

30. Drive to Arrowtown

Arrowtown is a small, historic mining town that is located only a short distance from Queenstown.

The town itself is very small, consisting only of the main road and a few tourist shops. Still, if you're interested in the mining history of New Zealand, or you want to see its quaint and picturesque buildings and mountain backdrops, then add Arrowtown to your Queenstown itinerary!

31. Hike or Unwind by the Arrow River

Arrowtown is also a mini-hub of short hikes and river walks. Located just near the main Arrowtown visitor's car park is a hiking area that is very popular with day-trippers from Queenstown.

For those visiting Arrowtown, make sure to stop by the Arrow river for lunch or for a quick swim!

32. Stick a Thumb Out

I know, this is a little bit of a random one. However, Queenstown is known as one of the easiest places in the world to hitchhike!

The combination of a large backpacking community and the warm, welcoming Kiwi spirit has created a scene where hitchhiking has become a regular form of transport for many travelers and locals.

So, if hitchhiking is on the bucket list, or if you're looking to save money on transport to any of the Queenstown attractions on this list of best things to do in Queenstown, then go ahead and give it a go!

33. Visit the Kawarau Gorge

While most people visit the Kawarau Gorge from Queenstown for the famous Bungy bridge, I think that it's a worthwhile destination in itself!

With pristine aqua waters and jagged canyons, the Kawarau River is begging to be explored. I'd recommend stopping by Roaring Meg for some of the best photo opportunities of the gorge.

34. Eat a Fergburger

No, this isn't a food blog, but eating at Fergburger is so iconic that this burger joint seems to make its way onto every list of Queenstown attractions!

Yes, the burgers really are that good, especially after a long day of hiking and exploring. Now that I've mentioned it, you'll likely see those paper-bag-wrapped wonders in the hands of every second person on the Queenstown boardwalk!

Fergburger even caters for vegans and vegetarians, so nobody has to miss out.

35. Devil's Staircase Lookout

While the Glenorchy to Queenstown road certainly gets more attention, on the other side of the elbow is yet another incredible lakeside drive.

The Devil's Staircase lookout is located on the road between Queenstown and Kingston and is a popular stop for those driving south to the Fjordlands.

36. Hit the Road!

Put simply, with so many epic things to do in Queenstown, you just won't run out of things to do or see.

However, Queenstown is just the start! The South Island of New Zealand is one of the most adventure-packed and wild places on earth, so it'd be a shame to miss it.

Some of the best adventures and memories are made on spontaneous trips! If you haven't yet, get your set of wheels and just drive, the roads surrounding Queenstown are so picturesque that they deserve a spot on the list!

37. Visit Wanaka

The adventures certainly don't end at Queenstown! Known colloquially as Queenstown's tamer little brother, Wanaka is another hotspot for great hikes and activities.

Located only an hour from Queenstown, many travelers only stop by for a day trip. However, if you want to check out some of the must-do's, including climbing Roy's Peak or the majestic Blue Pools, then it's worth stopping for at least a few days.

Where to Stay in Queenstown

I've written a separate, comprehensive accommodation guide to the best places to stay in Queenstown– make sure to check it out & get a great deal! Otherwise, below is a quick summary of my top picks from a budget backpacker lodge to a luxurious ski resort!

  • Best Luxury Accommodation: Shotover Penthouse & Spa - an incredible apartment that features an outdoor terrace with a barbecue and hot tub. It is situated 200m from the Skyline Gondola and Luge and is 1.3km from the Shotover river.
  • Best Value Lodge: Melbourne Lodge - located five minutes walk from central Queenstown. It offers picturesque views of the Remarkable mountains and has a large shared outdoor sundeck. This is a great choice for where to stay cheaply in Queenstown.
  • Where I stayed: Spaceship Car - During my recent visit to New Zealand, I cruised around in style in a Spaceship rental car. These are great for budget adventure travelers since you’ll get your accommodation and transport ticked off in one neat package.
  • Cheapest Hostel in Queenstown: Base Backpackers - Queenstown is known for a lot of things; adrenaline sports, epic day hikes, and awesome nightlife. Best Area to Stay in Queenstown

The actual town of Queenstown is remarkably small for its huge tourist draw. However, before you dive into the accommodation list for where to stay, you might want to understand a little more about Queenstown and the different areas.

Below is a quick summary to help you pick the best place to stay, depending on the activities you'd enjoy.

  • Queenstown - Refers to downtown, it's quite small, you can walk to pubs, clubs, restaurants, shops, the Gondola and Lake Wakatipu. Most tours and activities include transport from town.
  • Fern Hill - A residential hill just above the town. Many locals and seasonal workers live here as it's more affordable. It's a little bit harder to walk to the main attractions from here.
  • Bob's Cove - A small, beautiful lakeside township offering short walks and luxury accommodation just 15 minutes out of town.
  • Arrowtown - Another small, historic mining town 18 minutes from Queenstown. The much quieter and quaint atmosphere with walking tracks and river close by. Also good for Queenstown accommodation for skiing as it's close to the Mount Coronet Ski Slopes.
  • Frankton & Shotover - Closer to the airport. Many Queenstown hotel options are found alongside the Shotover River. It's close to attractions like the Shotover Bridge, Kawarau Gorge Bungy and the Remarkables Ski Area.

To summarise, if you're looking for where to stay in Queenstown for nightlife, restaurants and being close to the action, choose a hotel or hostel close to town. If you're looking for Queenstown accommodation for skiing, you could also consider lodging in either Arrowtown or in Shotover. If you're looking to get away somewhere more quiet, check out Bob's Cove.

The Ben Lomond track is one of the most popular alpine hikes near Queenstown on the South Island of New Zealand. Here’s a complete guide on how to hike the Ben Lomond track for the best mountain views in Queenstown!

I’m sure most hikers would agree when I say that the Ben Lomond hike in Queenstown is by far the best day hike to be had in New Zealand’s adventure capital.

In Queenstown, there’s certainly no shortage of adrenaline activities including white water rafting, bungy jumping, paragliding, and canyoning. But, those looking for a cheaper thrill can still get a vertigo hit by hitting the Ben Lomond track above the Gondola for a quick but epic mountain summit!

In this hiking guide, I’ll detail how to reach the Ben Lomond peak from one of the most popular hiking tracks: The Tiki Trail to the Skyline Gondola then onto to the Ben Lomond track to the summit.

Everything You Need to Know about the Ben Lomond Hike in Queenstown

The Ben Lomond track is easily one of the best hikes in Queenstown. From its summit, you'll be rewarded with incredible views of the Remarkable Range and the beautiful forests sloping down to Lake Wakatipu.

The mountain itself is named after the famous Ben Lomond mountain in Scotland, but the native Maori name is Te-taumata-o-Hakitekura.

The Ben Lomond peak is blocked by the Skyline hill in town, so you won't see it from the main strip. Rest assured, it's one of the highest trekking peaks in the area, and you'll have a great vantage point of the summit from behind the Skyline Gondola or from Queenstown Hill.

How High is Ben Lomond Mountain?

The Ben Lomond peak elevation is 1748 m above sea level. Hikers will start from the base of the Gondola at around 340 m, which means you'll be up for over 1400 metres of elevation gain in a single hike.

Track Length and Difficulty

From town to the summit, you can expect to walk around 18 km for the return trip. Usually, this takes between 5-7 hours.

The Ben Lomond hike is considered to be a fairly strenuous hike, not due to the distance but more due to the high amount of elevation gain in a single day. In saying that, there is no technical climbing or even scrambling involved.

As long as you are fit and you are prepared for a long incline slog, then the Ben Lomond track shouldn't be a problem for you.

Ben Lomond New Zealand Track Map

Below you can find a track map for the Ben Lomond Queenstown hike shared from the official DOC website. Note that access to the Ben Lomond track from the One Mile Creek Track is closed.

This means that your best bet is to follow the Tiki Trail to the Skyline Gondola and then onto the Ben Lomond track from there. (Full details below).

Here is a GPX file that I recorded on my Garmin watch during my walk up to Ben Lomond. You can download the GPX file and upload it to your watch or phone by clicking the link under the map.

However, you really won't need to as navigation is quite easy. Instead, this map might just be better served as a better understanding of what to expect on the hike.

Ben Lomond Hiking and Trail Guide

Since access to the Ben Lomond track from the One Mile Creek track has been closed, you have two options to reach the Ben Lomond summit:

  1. Option 1: One Mile Creek Track - this begins from the One Mile Creek parking lot on Glenorchy-Queenstown Road. This is not a very common way to hike Ben Lomond as the track can be slightly confusing at times.
  2. Option 1: Tiki Trail to the Skyline Gondola to the Ben Lomond Track - This is the full Ben Lomond Hike from Queenstown and the best option if you want a full-day hike straight from town.
  3. Option 3 (lazy option): Take the Gondola to the Skyline and Start at the Ben Lomond track - This is the lazier option. You'll cut out about 1 hour and roughly 400 m of elevation gain by taking the Gondola up to the Skyline. From here, you'll continue on and meet up at the Ben Lomond Track.

Ben Lomond Trailhead: The Tiki Trail

Whether you're choosing to walk up the Tiki Trail or take the Gondola up, you'll still need to make your way to the Queenstown Skyline Gondola, located at the end of Brecon street. The Tiki Trail marks the starting point for the Ben Lomond hike and is found directly next to the Gondola.

Tiki Trail to the Skyline Gondola

Duration: 1 - 1.5 hours

The Tiki Trail is one of my favorite trails in Queenstown. The track is fairly steep as it winds its way up the mountain. You'll walk through dense beech and fir forest and you'll spot several wooden "tiki" wooden statue carvings and signs

The trail is well-maintained and marked. Even if there is track maintenance, the Queenstown Lake District does a great job of keeping it open all year round.

Some of the best views of the Ben Lomond hike are achieved at small clearings at the start of the Tiki Trail. Here, you can get some epic views and photo opportunities of Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu.

Tip: Keep off the bike tracks. There are several downhill mountain bike tracks that often intersect with the Tiki Trail. You'll need to keep an eye out for downhill riders on the way.

Optional: Skyline Loop and Bob's Peak

Duration: 20 minutes

Once you reach the top of the Skyline Hill, you'll come out at the Gondola. From here, you'll need to turn right, walk around the Gondola station and follow the signs toward the Ben Lomond Track.

An optional detour is to instead follow signs for the Skyline Loop. This is only a short 20-minute detour.

To start, I went straight past this onto the Ben Lomond Track on the ascent. Instead, I decided to do the Skyline Loop on the descent and then detoured once again to the paragliding launch site and further on to Bob's Peak behind the Skyline Gondola Hill.

PARAGLIDING BEHIND QUEENSTOWN GONDOLA

Ben Lomond Track to the Saddle

Duration: 1 hour

Following the signs from the Gondola station and the Luge, walk up the concrete path until you reach a dense fir forest. This is the start of the Ben Lomond track.

Soon, you'll break out of the forest once again and commence along the exposed grassy and bushy hill all the way to the saddle. This section of the Ben Lomond hike in Queenstown is less steep than the Tiki Trail, but you'll have much better views of Lake Wakatipu and of course, Ben Lomond itself.

Once you reach the saddle, there are 360 views of the backcountry mountains and the famous Remarkables on the other side.

The Ben Lomond Summit

Duration: 30 minutes - 1 hour

After reaching the saddle, you can rest your legs on a wooden bench and prepare for the summit, or continue straight on.

The summit push is the steepest and most difficult part of the Ben Lomond hike. However, it is not technical and can be achieved by anyone with a decent level of fitness. We made it up to the summit in about 30 minutes from the saddle.

Queenstown Views from the top of Ben Lomond

Once at the top of Ben Lomond, the summit will offer you some of the best views in Queenstown.

On a clear day, you will have uninterrupted views of Queenstown, the Remarkables and the incredible Lake Wakatipu. The soaring Cecil and Walter Peaks are also visible across the lake.

On the other side, you may even spot Mounts Earnslaw and Aspiring far in the distance. But, this will depend on how lucky you get with the clouds!

Returning Back to Queenstown

After you've soaked up arguably the best views attainable from Queenstown, you'll be ready for the downhill ascent back to town. This hike is an out-and-back trail, meaning you will need to follow the same track down from Ben Lomond back to Queenstown.

It took me around two and a half hours to reach the bottom, including a detour around the Skyline Loop.

Conveniently, if you follow Brecon Street at the base of the Tiki Trail back to town centre, you'll pop out right in front of Ferg Burger. So, if you haven't tied one yet, this will be your excuse. Go on, you've earned it.

Best Season to Hike Ben Lomond

I've summited Ben Lomond twice on my trips to Queenstown, once in Winter and more recently in Summer.

The summit is accessible all year round. However, you can expect ice and snow, especially on the summit ascent in Winter.

Since the summit ridge is steep and narrow, you'll need to take extra care and monitor conditions if attempting the Ben Lomond summit in the colder months of May to September. The official DOC website recommends alpine gear such as crampons and ice axes during this period.

A quick but useful travel guide for those planning a trip to Milford Sound from Queenstown. How to get here, what to expect and inspiring photography from one of the world’s most beautiful fjords.

The alluring Milford Sound. Imagine cruising down misty fjords, with endless waterfalls sweeping down the Jurassic cliffs on either side of you. What if I told you that you could witness these scenes by jumping on a quick bus to Milford Sound from Queenstown?

In this guide, I’ll aim to help you plan your trip to Milford Sound by providing you the best options to get here from Queenstown.

How to Get to Milford Sound

Those with a van or vehicle can drive directly to the Sound by themselves. However, you will need to drive around Lake Te Anau and through National Parklands. The drive is nearly 250 KM and you will definitely want to stop for several photo opportunities.

You will pass glaciers, waterfalls, lookouts and epic hiking opportunities. This part of New Zealand feels like it’s straight off the silver screen. It will take roughly 4 hours of driving to reach Milford Sound from Queenstown, so if you’re looking to see it on a day trip, you better leave early.

Once you arrive at the Milford Sound Visitor Centre, you can take the chance of squeezing a spot on the busy boats or just book your ticket online in advance.

Best Organised Day Trips to Milford Sound From Queenstown by Bus

Those without the luxury of their own transport can purchase a Milford Sound package from Queenstown. There’s no shortage of tours operators, most offering similar packages that often take the same boat ferry at the fjord (Milford Sound is actually a fjord, not a sound).

The main difference will be the bus that takes you through the National Park. However, the stops along the Fjordlands tend to vary also.

But, to save you doubling-up by booking the same trip through a more expensive middle-man, I’ll link to the best ones that with the best rates below.

Cheapest Coach & Cruise Combo: $179

This is the tour that I booked when I first organised my trip to Milford Sound from Queenstown (I’ve been back several times since independently). The trip is run by Real Journeys, which is the most popular and most economical option for those based in Queenstown without a vehicle.

To this day, I’d still recommend this option for most travellers as the trip is much cheaper than most others. Furthermore, the bus stops at some scenic locations in the Fjordland National Park to stretch the legs and see the epic sights the region has to offer.

Small-Group Van & Cruise: $212

For those who would like to experience the beauty of the fjord on a day trip from Queenstown without feeling like a tourist, this is a great option. These small-group tours are becoming more popular by the year and offer a more personal experience.

Most-Epic Option: Half Day Helicopter Trip: Price varies by season, click to check.

For those of you who want to see Milford Sound in style and don’t want to waste a day on a bus, this might be your ticket. This option is an epic half-day adventure from Queenstown that takes you over the Fiordland mountains by Helicopter. It also includes a cruise and return helicopter to Queenstown.

A Boat Journey Through Milford Sound

Undoubtedly, visitors can get the best views of Milford Sound from the deck of one of the many cruise boats. If you’re taking the day trips mentioned above, this is included. However, if you have your own transport to Milford Sound from Queenstown, check out the options for the best boat trips below.

Premium Cruise on a Glass-Roof Catamaran: $76

This one is currently discounted and quite popular since it’s only a little dearer than the bigger tourist boats. If you’re after a premium experience on Milford Sound for a cheap price, this is your best bet.

Nature Cruise: $69

This cruise is provided by Real Journeys, arguably the most popular boat option on Milford Sound. This price is for the boat journey only, so you will need to drive here yourself.

As you cruise down the fjord, you will get to witness some epic surging waterfalls, wild seals sunbathing on the rocks and the famous Mitre Peak sticking through the cloud cover.

What is the Best Time to Visit The Fjordlands?

Milford Sound is usually on the list of most visiting New Zealand’s South Island. However, is there really a best time to go to Milford Sound? With a mean annual rainfall of nearly 6500 mm (252 inches), it’s recognised as the wettest inhabited place in New Zealand. It is also one of the wettest in the whole world!

Most people that visit Milford Sound from Queenstown experience at least a little bit of rain. In saying that, a few showers on your cruise down the Sound will excite those looking to witness the endless flow of temporary waterfalls.

milford sound from queenstown waterfall and rainbow

While it is quite wet all year round, the hottest months are in Summer, from January to February. During this time, temperatures can get up to 27 degrees celsius. The cooler Winter months drop as low as 15 degrees celsius.

Due to the consistent rainfall and moderate heat, there isn’t a best time to visit Milford Sound. It totally depends on what you want to see. Personally, I prefer the Spring months for better hiking opportunities on the South Island.

Queenstown is known as the adventure capital of New Zealand. What you might not know is that it’s also a great place for hiking. Here are the 8 best hikes in Queenstown for adventure travelers!

From epic mountain summits straight from town to spectacular coastal tracks on the edge of Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown is the perfect destination for everything outdoors.

In this quick guide, I’ll outline the 8 best hikes in and around Queenstown to help you plan your day trips! I’ve also written comprehensive hiking guides for each hike, so if you are looking for more information and photos, make sure to check out the links below each section.

Enjoy!

Best Hikes in Queenstown

Without further ado, here are the absolute best hikes in Queenstown and surrounds! Most of the hikes are accessible either directly from town or just a short drive or hitchhike away.

However, I have included two of my favourite hikes at the end that are accessed from a short drive to neighbouring Glenorchy. The road here is one of the most scenic in New Zealand and only takes roughly one hour. Therefore, it’s possible to hike all of these hikes from Queenstown.

1. Ben Lomond Summit Track

One of the most popular and most challenging hikes in Queenstown is the epic day trip up to the Ben Lomond Summit, which sits at 1748 M AMSL.

This hike is accessed directly from town by starting on the Tiki trail just next to the Skyline Gondola.

Expect a steep yet rewarding ascent that takes roughly 5-7 hours to complete and return. From the summit, you will get sweeping views of Queenstown, the Remarkables and of course, the beautiful Lake Wakatipu.

2. Tiki Trail to the Gondola

If you’re not quite up to hiking all the way to the Ben Lomond summit, then taking the Tiki Trail to the top of the Skyline Gondola is still a very worthwile trip.

The Tiki Trail is one of Queenstown’s famous local hikes and offers great views of the town from above. The trail itself while steep, it is very scenic as you pass thick birch forest and sounds of native birds.

At the top, you’ll also find the “luge” which is one of the most popular adventure activities found in Queenstown. Furthermore, if you’d like to take the Gondola back down, I’d recommend booking a gondola and luge joint ticket online.

TIKI TRAIL HIKE FROM QUEENSTOWN

3. Queenstown Hill

Perhaps the most popular hike in Queenstown, the Queenstown Hill loop track is a gentler, yet scenic hike that leads to the top of the resident hill.

The entire track can be managed within 2-3 hours, so there’s no excuse not to hit the trail! I recommend heading up for sunset or sunrise for the most impressive views of Queenstown.

4. Moke Lake Loop

Moke Lake New Zealand is a small mountain lake located near the small suburb of Closeburn, near Queenstown. Although this lake is only a relative stone-throw away from the bustling adrenaline hub, Moke Lake is a much tamer and secluded hiking area.

The Moke Lake Loop is a short, scenic walk that covers the circumference of the lake. There’s also a great lookout point on the adjacent hill where you can catch great views of the lake.

5. Bob’s Cove Track

For those looking for a quick and easy coastal track with stunning lake views, then Bob’s Cove Track Queenstown is the most bang-for-hiking-buck track in town. I say that because it’s only a short twenty-minute walk for views that are arguably more impressive than other popular tracks like Queenstown Hill.

On a clear day, I’d highly recommend making the short drive to the cove from Queenstown and climbing up to Picnic Point. While not steep, the views of the Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu are spectacular.

6. Lake Alta Hike

Now for a bit of a “cheat” hike to a scenic alpine lake with a viewpoint which sits at 2000M AMSL . What I mean by this is that you’ll actually be driving the majority of the incline from Queenstown.

The Lake Alta hike is a short track that leads from the Remarkables Ski Area and finishes just beside the lake. However, if you follow my guide below, I detail a relatively unknown route which ends at one of the most impressive viewpoints in Queenstown.

7. Earnslaw Burn Hike

Probably one of the best hikes near Queenstown, if not in New Zealand. To get to the trailhead, you’ll need to drive approximately one hour from Queenstown to the nearby town of Glenorchy.

The Earnslaw Burn route follows the Earnslaw glacial burn through dense birch forest before breaking out into a waterfall-lined valley with unbeatable views of the Earnslaw Glacier.

This hike is usually attempted over two days, with freedom camping spots available in the valley. With that said, if you leave early enough and have the energy, you can complete this hike from Queenstown in one day.

8. The Routeburn Track

The Routeburn track is one of New Zealand’s Great Walks and also one of the most scenic hikes in New Zealand. Most trampers and hikers attempt this over 2-3 days. However, it is possible to hike the most beautiful section of this track in a long one-day out-and-back hike.

Similarly to the Earnslaw Burn hike, the Routeburn Track is not exactly a hike in Queenstown. You will need to depart a little early to drive the one-hour scenic road to Glenorchy before hitting the trail.

Still, if you don’t have time to stay in Glenorchy, starting the hike from a Queenstown base is still a popular option.

Bob’s Cove Track in Queenstown is an easily accessible coastal walk with epic views of the turquoise cove and the incredible Lake Wakatipu.

In this guide, I’ll answer all your questions about getting to Bob’s Cove, hiking the circuit loop, and what to expect at this amazing location.

Where is Bob's Cove?

Bob's Cove is located approximately 14 kilometers from Queenstown near the sharp elbow bend on Lake Wakatipu.

The wide cove is protected from most winds due to the raised hillside and surrounding treeline.

How to Get to Bob's Cove Queenstown

Like most places worth visiting in New Zealand's South Island, Bob's Cove track is best accessible by car.

Depending on traffic around the lakefront, it should take only about 15-20 minutes to reach. The drive to Bob's cove follows one of the most scenic drives in the world; the Glenorchy to Queenstown Road. There's only one road to Glenorchy, so follow signs there and keep an eye out for the sign to Bob's Cove car park on the left.

If it's your first time driving this route, you're in for a treat.

During my time in Queenstown, I got around in a Spaceship Van, which I highly recommend. After swimming and hiking around Bob's Cove, we drove over to 12 Mile Delta for an epic LoTR-inspired camping trip.

Rent a car! New Zealand is very safe for motorists & driving is the best way to explore the country.

Make sure to book in advance using a comparison site like DiscoverCars to get the best deals. Or, if you want a camper, my favourite in NZ is Spaceships.

Is there a bus from Queenstown to Bob's Cove?

Unfortunately, there isn't a direct public bus service that runs from Queenstown to Bob's Cove as of 2023. This means that to get here from Queenstown without your own transport, you'll need to either stick out a thumb or rent a bike.

Hiking and Swimming at Bob's Cove

After parking up at Bob's Cove, you'll have a few options for things to do. On a warm summer's day, Bob's Cove makes the perfect place to cool off in the ridiculously turquoise water. There are also a few tracks that loop around the cove, and one that follows all the way around to 12 Mile Delta.

If you're up for a quick but rewarding viewpoint, then I'd certainly recommend walking the circumference of the cove, following signs to Picnic Hill.

Bob's Cove Lookout

Bob's Cove track Queenstown begins at the car park and descends into native bush and tracks down to the edge of the cove.

Following signs to "Picnic Point", walk for approximately 20 minutes until you reach the top of Bob's Cove Lookout, where you'll have reached what I think was one of the best coastal viewpoints on Lake Wakatipu.

Bob's Cove History

Along the Bob's Cove track, you'll notice an old rubble pile of bricks that is actually a historic lime kiln. This was one of many from the 1800s, where the local Lime Company used Bob's Cove as a quarry to process the limestone.

Accommodation Near Bob's Cove

Want the adventure perks of Queenstown mixed in with the serenity of Lake Wakatipu? Here are a few options:

Luxury Retreat at Bob's Cove: Touch of Spice
For obvious reasons, I didn't stay here. This retreat is one of the most scenic and luxury accommodation options in Queenstown. This villa retreat has 5 bedrooms, a kitchen, living rooms and 5 bathrooms!

Budget Lakeside Alternative: YHA Queenstown Lakefront
No, this one isn't at Bob's Cove, but it's as close as you'll get on a backpacker's budget. The YHA opposite the incredible Lake Wakatipu is one of the best and highest-rated hostels in Queenstown. If you’re looking to meet other adventure travelers, be close to the action and prefer a comfortable dorm bed, don’t look past YHA Lakefront.

More Things to do in Queenstown

You'll never really be short of things to do in Queenstown. But, if you're on your way back to Queenstown and you've got your own set of wheels, why not check out Moke Lake on the way back.

Did you know that it’s possible to complete a Routeburn Track day hike from Glenorchy? Read this guide on how to a large section of one of New Zealand’s best hikes in a day.

The Routeburn Track is one of New Zealand’s Great walks and one of the most popular on the South Island. If you don’t have time to complete the entire 32 KM hike, then it’s possible to still get through a good section of it on a full-day in-and-out hike.

Following this guide, it’s also possible to summit Conical Hill and check out one of the most scenic alpine huts in New Zealand before descending back down to Glenorchy.

How to get to the Routeburn Track

Depending on which side you are looking to start the track, you could either head to Glenorchy, which is about an hour's drive from Queenstown, or head to the Divide Shelter, on Milford Road, 85 km from Te Anau.

In this quick guide, I'll detail my experience hiking a large section of the Routeburn track in one day from Glenorchy. If you're interested in reading a detailed guide for the entire journey, you can find out more information at the DOC website.

Routeburn Track Day Hike Start Point: Glenorchy

The starting point is the Routeburn Shelter, located near Glenorchy, a small farming town 65 km from Queenstown that deserves a visit in itself.

Once you reach the town, you'll need to follow Glenorchy-Paradise Road, before turning left onto Glenorchy-Routeburn Road and finally turning right onto Routeburn Road, a well-maintained and accessible gravel road.

For convenience, I've pinned the exact location of the Routeburn day hike start point on the map below.

Routeburn Track Trailhead Map

Once you reach the shelter, you can park your car, fill up your water bottle and begin the hike.

Routeburn Track Map and Resources

For up-to-date information on track closures, hut prices and more, you can visit the DOC website. I'd also recommend downloading this brochure to help with more information.

Below I've included a map of the entire Routeburn track.

Routeburn Day Hike Route

  • Hike Length and Duration: 28 km return; 8-10 hours
  • Difficulty: Long with steep sections. Easy track to follow.
  • Total Elevation Gain: 750 m
  • Highest Point: Conical HIll 1515 m

For this day-trip hike, I've suggested starting at Routeburn Shelter, passing Routeburn Flats Hut and the Routeburn Falls Hut, Lake Harris and summiting Conical Hill before turning back to Routeburn Shelter.

This is a fairly long day hike that took me about 8 hours in total for the return trip including some brief stops.

What to Expect on the Routeburn Track

As with all of New Zealand's Great Walks, the Routeburn Track is very well-maintained and absolutely stunning. I'd recommend anybody visiting New Zealand to at least attempt one if they have the time.

Routeburn Shelter to Routeburn Flats Hut

Total time: 1.5 hours

The first stretch of the trail enters thick rainforest and crosses several picturesque suspension bridges. This track winds through some spectacular landscapes along the crystal-clear Routeburn river.

After a few kilometer's, we broke out beside a wide tussock valley known as Routeburn Flats. There is both a hut and a campsite here, with running water and a toilet if you need it.

Routeburn Flats Hut to Routeburn Falls Hut

Total time: 1 hour

Soon after, the path diverts back into the treeline where the long 1-hour ascent begins up to the Routeburn Falls hut. From here, we were blessed with incredible views over the Routeburn river and the tussock flats below.

When at Routeburn Falls, we were also lucky enough to witness a helicopter landing beside the hutments and onto a rocky outcrop just by the waterfall.

Routeburn Falls Hut to Harris Saddle Hut

Total time: 1 hour

After a quick Muesli bar, we were back on the trail and the ascent up to the highest point on the Routeburn Track; Harris Saddle.

This section of the track was my favourite. The trail gently ascends a rocky tussock and sections of wetland with surrounding jagged peaks before reaching the incredible Lake Harris.

From here, you'll also have great views of Conical Hill.

Lake Harris Routeburn Day Hike

After taking in the views of the turquoise alpine lake, we continued up the bluff to Harris Saddle. Here, we found what I believe to be the most picturesque alpine hut in New Zealand. This was also the end-point on our in-and-out day hike of the Routeburn Track. But first, a quick summit of Conical Hill was in order.

HARRIS SADDLE HUT ROUTEBURN DAY HIKE

Conical Hill Summit

Total time: 1 hour

The final push of the Routeburn track day hike - Conical Hill. The summit push took us about one hour. This involved a bit of rock scrambling and the slopey sections were very icy and slippery. If you're attempting this off-peak season as we did, I'd recommend crampons and an alpine experience.

The summit offered excellent views of the hut above the clouds, Lake Harris, the Fjordlands and the Darran Mountains.

Returning to Glenorchy

Total Time: 3.5- 4 hours

By now, we were already pretty tired. Nevertheless, we still had to return back to Glenorchy. To get back, we followed the same trail, which was much easier on the legs since it was mostly downhill.

Great Walks Hiking Season

The main Great walks Hiking season runs from November to April. During these months, the weather is warmer and the risk of avalanches is lower.

Although the Routeburn Track day hike is technically possible year-round, it's important to check weather conditions and avalanche risk, especially from May to September.

If you're attempting the Conical Hill summit, you'll need to assess conditions and not attempt it in snowy conditions.

The Lake Alta hike Queenstown is a short and easily-accessible alpine hike located high up on the Remarkables Mountain Range above Queenstown.

Lake Alta Hike Queenstown leads to arguably, one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in South Island New Zealand. Sitting at the base of a small dome of jagged peaks, the lake is so picturesque that it was featured in the Lord of the Rings as Dimrill Dale. The short but rewarding hike is often considered one of the best Remarkables hiking trails.

Even if you’re not a LoTR fan (how could you not be), a drive up the Remarkables range and a short 1-hour return hike to Lake Alta should be on anybody’s Queenstown bucket list.

Getting to the Lake Alta Track

Access to the Lake Alta hike Queenstown is located directly from the car park at the Remarkables ski area. Getting here takes approximately 30 minutes from Queentown central.

You'll need to turn off on State Highway 6 (SH6) at the signposted junction to the ski area. From here, it's a steep, winding, but well-maintained road that climbs all the way up the mountain slope.

Map of Lake Alta trailhead in Queenstown

Driving up to the Remarkables

Driving up to the Remarkables is a bit of an adventure in itself, and the views are certainly a warm-up for things to come.

The road is steep, however easily managed in a 2WD in the warmer months. In winter or after a snowfall, you will need to have snow chains fitted. There are several chain-fitting aisles to pull into on the way up and at the base.

Information about the Lake Alta Hike in Queenstown

  • Hike Length and Duration: 3.5 km (1 hour) return to the Lake. 5 km (1.5 -2 hours) return to the saddle viewpoint
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Lake Alta Elevation: 1850 m

After making it to the skifield car park, we found a signpost with trail information immediately after turning right up the pedestrian roadway.

This is in fact, the trailhead. The start of the hike, therefore, involves some road walking up to the ski fields before continuing on to the right, up a slope, and over a well-marked trail.

LAKE ALTA HIKE QUEENSTOWN

There are a few small and gentle creek crossings before reaching Lake Alta, but they are easily managed without getting wet.

The track is fairly steep the entire way up to the lake, gaining approximately 220 m of elevation from the car park to Lake Alta. From the saddle viewpoint, expect another 150 m of elevation to reach just over 2000 m above sea level.

More information and up-to-date track status can be found on the official DOC website.

Best Lake Alta Viewpoint: The Saddle Scramble

We had heard that it was possible to make an easy scramble up to the overlooking saddle directly north of Lake Alta. We couldn't see a marked trail, but we figured we would try our luck by walking up the rocks to the obvious rocky outcrop under the saddle.

Once we approached the rocks, we could make out a clear scrambling route all the way to the top of the smooth, grassy saddle to the right.

To find the exact route that we took, refer to the GPX file or my Strava above. Note that since it's not a DOC track, you'll need to attempt this at your own risk. In saying that, we considered it to be easy and relatively safe, at least in Summer. I'd imaging that it'd be slippery and a lot more dangerous in Winter.

Complete guide to Moke Lake New Zealand – epic camping and mountain lake hiking spot near Queenstown.

Moke Lake New Zealand is a small mountain lake located near the small suburb of Closeburn, near Queenstown. Although this lake is only a relative stone-throw away from the bustling adrenaline hub, Moke Lake offers a much quieter and chilled out vibe as well as opportunities for short day hikes and viewpoints.

If you’re looking for a cheap place to pitch a tent for the night, then this DOC campsite is one of the best options near Queenstown.

Where is Moke Lake New Zealand?

Moke Lake is located approximately 14 KM from the Queenstown, behind the hills on the road leading from Queenstown to Glenorchy. The lake is tucked between two mountain ranges and is accessed by a dirt road leading down the valley alongside Moke Creek.

How to get to Moke Lake From Queenstown

Getting to Moke Lake requires a short 6 KM dart down the Queenstown-Glenorchy road, before making the turn off on the Moke Lake road. Shortly after, keep an eye out for signs indicating a left turn down the Moke Lake dirt access road.

It shouldn’t take more than 25 minutes to reach the lakefront camping area from Queenstown – once you’ve beaten the traffic and actually gotten out of town of course!

Note: Winter access is open to 4WD vehicles only.

Moke Lake Campsite Review

We visited the Moke Lake campsite because we were eager to check out the lake viewpoint and circuit loop. When we arrived, we were surprised with how well-kept the campsites and facilities were.

We pitched our tent right beside the lakefront, which meant we got some spectacular sunrise views for breakfast.

For $15 per person, it’s probably one of the best places to camp near Queenstown.

Hiking at Moke Lake New Zealand

Below you’ll find some information about the three main hikes and short day walks that begin from Moke Lake.

Don’t miss the Ben Lomond Hike from Queenstown.

1. Moke Lake Loop Track

The Moke Lake Loop track is a the most popular hiking track at the lake. The track is fairly flat, following the circumference of the lake for a total length of approximately 6 KM.

The start point to the Moke Lake track is directly in front of the camping ground, near the shorefront beach access.

2. Hillside Viewpoint

The Moke Lake viewpoint was my personal favourite hike in the area. The track is unmarked, but obvious if you know where to look.

The trail heads up a steep hill for roughly 40 minutes to a flat clearing where you will get some of the best views of Moke Lake.

I found the track by reading Destinationless Travel’s excellent guide, so head here for directions and for the location.

3. The Moonlight Track

The longest hiking track from Moke Lake New Zealand is the Moonlight track. This trail leads all the way past the Ben Lomond saddle over to Arthur’s Point, near the Edith Cavell Bridge and Shotover Jet.

This track is steep and much longer – a total of 4 hours walking. In the wintertime, it can also get slippery and icy, so best to be prepared.

The Moonlight Trail from Moke Lake to Arthur’s Point begins above Moke Lake near Ben Lomond Station.

Everything you need to know about hiking to Queenstown Hill, one of the best viewpoints in town!

In terms of epic day hikes from Queenstown, you can’t get much more popular than the Queenstown Hill Hike.

This famous trail has become much more than just an epic view of Queenstown. You could argue that it’s almost a rite of passage for visitors to New Zealand’s adrenaline capital!

This guide details how to get here, trail information and what you might expect.

Queenstown Hill Hike - All You Need to Know

We know that Queenstown Hill is popular, but is it worth it?

In my opinion, if you have a couple of hours to kill and you want an epic view of Queenstown, then I'd consider it a must-do. Like most of the other trails around Queenstown, the Queenstown Hill Hike is easily accessible both by foot and by car.

QUEENSTOWN HILL SUMMIT

Queenstown Hill Hike Start Point

Alright, but where is the Queenstown Hill start point? The trailhead is located on Belfast Terrace, found in the maze of steep, winding suburban hills behind town.

If you're walking from town, then you'll already be in for a 20-minute warm-up on the old legs. The easiest way to find the start point is to follow Google's directions to the pin below.

Hiking Route Details

Walking Time: Expect anywhere between 2 to 3 hours return.

Hike Distance: The return trail, including the optional middle loop, is approximately 6 km.

Hike Difficulty: Easy but moderately steep in some segments. Basic fitness is adequate.

Queenstown Hill Elevation: 907 m. The starting point on Belfast Terrace sits at around 500 m, which means you'll gain about 400 m.

What to Expect on the Queenstown Hill Trail

In true Queenstown fashion, the Queenstown Hill hike starts in suburbian streets and quickly turns into an epic nature track.

The trail leads through thick sections of beech and fir forest before eventually breaking out at the grassy hilltop.

Along the track, there are a few opportunities to sneak an early view of Queenstown through the trees and shrubs. Keep an eye out for possums and brightly colored red mushrooms, but don't think about eating either.

The incline is fairly moderate, but you'll need a general degree of fitness to gain the approximate 400 M of elevation. Since this track is popular for runners and day-hikers, there are a couple of benches to stop and rest at if you need it.

Optional Queenstown Hill "Viewpoint" Loop

At approximately 1.3 km along the trail, you'll come across a fork that splits the track in two. You can follow the left track which leads directly up to the summit or follow the right trail to a "viewpoint".

Unfortunately, the viewpoint isn't much worth the extra 15-minute walk since the treeline now covers most of the view.

However, it might be a good idea to take the left trail up, and mix it up by taking the loop on the way down.

Queenstown Hill Summit and View

Arriving at the summit of Queenstown Hill, we had excellent views of Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables, and the towering Ben Lomond.

Arguably, you'll get the best views at the Queenstown Hill hike summit, but there are also some smaller hills below if the summit gets crowded.

Where to Stay in Queenstown

I've written a separate, comprehensive accommodation guide to the best places to stay in Queenstown– make sure to check it out get a great deal! Otherwise, below is a quick summary of my top picks.

  • Best Luxury Accommodation: Shotover Penthouse & Spa - an incredible apartment that features an outdoor terrace with a barbecue and hot tub. It is situated 200m from the Skyline Gondola and Luge and is 1.3km from the Shotover river.
  • Best Value Lodge: Melbourne Lodge - located five minutes walk from central Queenstown & offers picturesque views of the Remarkable mountains and has a large shared outdoor sundeck. This is a great choice for where to stay cheaply in Queenstown.
  • Where I stayed: Spaceship Camper - During my recent visit to New Zealand, I cruised around in style in a Spaceship rental car.
What it’s not known for is anything to do with the word cheap. In saying that, if you book ahead, you’ll still be able to get a dorm bed for under $25 NZD at Base Backpackers.
