A comprehensive hiking guide with a list of some of the best hikes in the Seychelles! Discover some of the Seychelles’ best jungle trails and coastal vistas on your next visit to the archipelago.

While many people visit the Seychelles for the white-sand beaches and luxury resorts, the truth is that this archipelago has so much more to offer.

That’s why I hope to fill the gap and let you in on all the epic adventure opportunities available in the Seychelles.

After spending a lot of time hiking some of the best trails on La Digue, Praslin, and Mahé, I’ve formulated this run-down of 15 awesome hikes in the Seychelles. I hope it inspires you to get out and explore more of this incredible destination.

Quicklist: 3 Best Adventure & Outdoor Activities to Book in Seychelles

In a rush? Here are three of the best hiking adventure tours and outdoor activities that you can book in the Seychelles Islands.

  • Anse Marron Tour - a guided hiking tour to one of the most beautiful hidden beaches on La Digue Island.
  • Mahe Rock Pool Tour - discover a unique opportunity to explore one of the most beautiful and secluded natural rock pools in the Seychelles.
  • Hike to Anse Major - an awesome hike to one of the best beaches on Mahe Island via stunning jungle trails.

15 Awesome Hikes in the Seychelles

1. Anse Marron Hike, La Digue

La Digue comes to the top of my list of favorite islands to go hiking on in the Seychelles.

And, one of the best hikes on the island is the nature trail to Anse Marron. This secluded hidden-gem has long been an island secret but has recently blown up on an international scale. This is largely due to a few guides opening up guided walks to Anse Marron.

Once you lay eyes on this beach, you'll soon discover why. This sheltered, private beach is one of the most breathtaking beaches in the Seychelles. It features incredibly blue water and a sheltered cove with amazing granite rock formations.

Anse Marron on La Digue, Seychelles

However, before you head out, it’s best to know that tourists are highly discouraged from commencing this Seychelles hike independently. Apparently, I was told that a lot of tourists get lost on this trail and require rescue and I was told I shouldn’t post directions for this reason.

Luckily, there are small-group, guided trips that are going to be your best bet. In fact, this particular trip to Anse Marron is one of the most-booked and highest-rated tours on La Digue Island. It has 5-stars on Viator– one of the world’s best booking websites, with a Badge of Excellence on Tripadvisor. Best of all, it only costs around €40 for a whole day!

2. Morne Blanc Nature Trail, Mahe

Mahé is another incredible Seychelles island for hiking. One of my favorite hikes here is the Morne Blanc Nature Trail. This track is located within the beautiful Morne Seychellois National Park (Morne Seychelles National Park).

This is one of the best hikes for amazing views over the west coast of the island. The trail begins on Sans Soucis Road, the scenic, cross-island road connecting Victoria to Port Glaud.

Morne Blanc Nature Trail, Mahe, Seychelles

The Morne Blanc trail is a steep but short climb through amazing jungle to reach the viewpoint. It's only 1.8 kilometers return, but you'll need to hike up around 230 meters of elevation to the summit (667 m above sea-level).

From the top, you’ll get a vantage point of Therese and Conception Island, running all the way down the coast to Petite Anse on the south cape.

3. Anse Cocos Hikes, La Digue

It's no secret that La Digue has some of the best beaches in the world. Besides Anse Source D'Argent, one of the absolute best is Anse Cocos.

There are two options to get to Anse Cocos on La Digue and both of them require nature trail hikes.

The easy option is to take the short coastal trail from Grand Anse. This is a very scenic, easy, and beautiful trail. It offers plenty of opportunity for wildlife spotting, including the Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher, the Bulbul, Giant Day Gecko, and the Seychelles Bronze Gecko.

If you're up for more of a challenge, you could hike to Anse Cocos from Belle Vue Road, passing the Romeo & Juliette viewpoint (below).

4. Anse Georgette Hike, Praslin

Everybody knows about the amazing Anse Lazio on Praslin.

However, what many visitors don't know is that its neighbor, Anse Georgette, is equally as beautiful. Best of all, it's much quieter too!

To get to Anse Georgette, you'll need to either stay at the Constance Lemuria Resort, or take the jungle trail over the hill from Anse Lazio.

This trail takes about an hour but is easy to follow for the duration. Start the hike from the west end of Anse Lazio beach.

Anse Georgette Praslin Island

5. Le Glacis Noir Trail, PRaslin

The Le Glacis Noir Trail is one of the best hiking trails on Praslin Island. You can begin this hike from the nearby Vallée de Mai.

The trail leads through the dense, tropical forests and climbs to a viewpoint tower offering an amazing vantage point of the coast. The roughly 2.8-kilometre trail is mostly shaded throughout and should take about an hour for most people to complete.

This is one of the best hiking trails in the Seychelles for wildlife spotting. Most people see multiple black parrots here!

Looking for more Seychelles travel guides and inspiration? Below are my most comprehensive guides that will serve as a great resource for your trip.

6. Anse Major Nature Trail, Mahe

My favorite beach on Mahé is the remote and mind-blowingly epic Anse Major.

To get here, hikers will need to take a relatively short and easy hike starting near the western end of Beau Vallon.

The hike to this remote beach on the isolated northwest end of Mahe offers both jungle and coastal views. However, it's the view at the end that really takes the cake for the most stunning scenery.

Anse Major beach has crystal clear water, perfect white sand and an unbelievable mountain backdrop. Check out some of the images I captured of this beach from my drone.

7. Nid D'Aigle (Eagle's Nest), La Digue

Fancy hiking to the highest point of La Digue Island?

This point is known as Nid D'Airlge or the Eagle's Nest. The summit is roughly 333 meters. However, chances are you won't be beginning this trail from sea level.

The best way to hike Nid D'Aigle in the Seychelles is to begin at Belle Vue Restaurant. There's a steep but short trail leading from this restaurant all the way to the summit in less than 20 minutes.

Nid D'Aigle, Eagle's Nest Hike La Digue

8. Copolia Trail, Mahe

If Morne Blanc offers the best views of Mahé's west coast, then the Copolia has the best views of the east.

This trail begins on the same cross-island road, but this time closer to Victoria. The trail is also similar, being short, but steep. In total, expect just 1.9 kilometers return.

Book: Copolia Trail Guided hike

At the end, you'll be greeted with incredible views of the east coast beaches, the village of Takamaka, Victoria, and Eden Island.

Rental Cars on Mahé

If you're looking to explore the main island of Mahé, it's a good idea to rent your own vehicle. However, I recommend booking this well in advance if you want to secure a good rate as rentals are every limited during the peak season.

That's why I recommend using DiscoverCars to compare prices across different companies on Mahé.

9. Salazie & Pasquière Track, Praslin

This next trail is one of the longest hikes on the Seychelles island of Praslin. This is a loop trail combining the Salazie Track with the Pasquière Trail.

The path is quite level, with little incline throughout. It features several great coastal viewpoints and an opportunity to walk through some of the island's less visited areas. On this loop, you'll see:

  • Anse Volbert
  • Anse Petite Cour
  • Grand Anse
  • Anse Possession

It's best to start this one at Grand Anse and continue into the interior from there.

Salazie Track Seychelles hiking

10. Romeo & Juliet Viewpoint Hike (Unique Viewpoints), La Digue

This next trail is a remote hike through La Digue's dense interior. This one follows several random logging trails from Belle Vue Road and therefore, I recommend contacting Henry (above) to show you the way.

The Romeo & Juliet viewpoint is an epic rock vantage point over La Digue's mostly untouched east coast.

The view stretches over the green, tropical jungle and all the way down to the Anse Cocos, Petite Anse, and Grand Anse. It’s by far my favorite view on the island.

After soaking up the views you can continue down to Anse Cocos. From here, it's best to walk back via Grand Anse to avoid the steep climb back to the road.

Romeo and Juliette Viewpoint La Digue, Seychelles

11. Mare Aux cochons Trail, Mahe

One of the lesser-known hikes in the Seychelles is the cross-island Mare aux Cochons trail.

While this one doesn’t offer as many spectacular views as some of the other hikes on this list, it instead allows you to experience the island's interior. That's because the Mare aux Cochons trail has some of the best plant and wildlife viewing in the archipelago.

Again, this trail is a little remote and difficult to follow. Therefore, I recommend booking a guide. My great friend Roddey (above) took me on this trail. He knows absolutely everything about the history and nature of the Seychelles and will point out all the highlights.

12. Anse Songe Nature Trail, La Digue

Starting from Grand Anse, Anse Songe is another great short coastal nature trail on La Digue Island.

This trail begins just a few hundred meters before the access to Grand Anse beach on the southeastern end of La Digue. The track begins by winding through flat, sandy jungle before climbing over a short hill. In total, this Seychelles hiking trail should only take about 20 minutes and you could even ride your bicycle to the short hill, cutting down some time.

Anse Songe is a rocky beach that you’ll often have all to yourself. This beach is a little shallow and there is a small stretch of sand below a large granite boulder that is great for swimming (confident swimmers only) and cooling off after the walk.

Anse Songe La Digue, Seychelles

13. Sauzier Waterfall Trail, Mahe

The Seychelles doesn't just have great hikes– it's even got waterfalls!

One of my favorites is Sauzier Waterfall, located just a short walk from Port Glaud, on the western side of Mahé.

The trail starts just a few hundred meters into the village from the church. There's an entry fee for this one, which is just 50 SCR per person. The hike follows a scenic track for just five minutes before finishing up at a majestic jungle waterfall complete with a deep swimming hole.

Travel tip: This waterfall is included on the 6-hour adventure tour on Mahé.

Suzier Waterfall on Mahe Island

14. Ros Sodyer Rock Pool Hike, Mahe

Another unique hiking opportunity on Mahe is the Ros Sodyer Rock Pool near Anse Takamaka beach. This is quite a distance from popular tourist hubs like Beau Vallon Beach and Eden Island. So, if you're not too keen on organizing transport, then I'd recommend just booking an organized day trip to the pools instead.

The hike is roughly 45-60 minutes return at about 2.2 kilometers in total. It's a relatively easy track following jungle trails before popping out onto the granite rock features on the coast.

Book: Guided tour to Ros Sodyer on Mahe

The rock pool is very deep and is perfect for swimming in good weather. I suggest trying to line up your hike to arrive at low hide for the best experience.

Mahe Rock Pool

15. Vallée de Mai, Praslin

The last trail on this list of the best hikes in the Seychelles is the one-and-only Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve.

Vallée de Mai is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best place in the Seychelles to see the endemic coco de mer palms. There is a variety of loop trail options you can take, each with amazing opportunities to see the Seychelles endemic palms.

Coco de mer palm forest, Vallée de Mai, Praslin

At the entrance, there are dried examples of the coco de mer (male and female), as well as a few other Seychelles endemic palm seeds.

There is an entrance fee of 350 SCR to enter Vallée de Mai. However, this money goes to maintaining the reserve, as well as the Aldabra Atoll.

Where to Stay in the Seychelles

No doubt, picking the right accommodation for your trip is important. There's nothing like relaxing in iconic Seychelles beachside hotels after a long day of hiking.

Below you'll find great recommendations and resources when planning your visit to the Seychelles.

If you want island-specific breakdowns with more options, then also check out the guides below:

Best Accommodation Picks For La Digue

La Digue is quite a small island and you can get anywhere on a bicycle within 20-30 minutes. You'll find a lot of hotels on the west side of the island near the jetty but only a few along the narrow stretch of coastal road on the mostly inhabited eastern side.

On La Digue, there are a wide variety of hotel and resort offerings ranging from relatively "budget friendly" self-catering lodges to incredible luxury resorts.

Below is a quick summary of the best picks.

  • Amazing Chateau: Hotel Chateau St Cloud (Mid-Range) - This is where I stayed on La Digue and I can personally recommend it as one of the best accommodation options on the island. This three-star hotel is perfect as a mid-range option as the location is excellent– just a little out from the main area on a quiet street that is close enough to both the incredible southwest beaches and the port.
  • Waterfront Hotel: Le Nautique (High-end) - Rated as one of the best waterfront accommodations on La Digue, Le Nautique is a luxurious offering combining traditional Creole architecture with modern comforts including king-sized beds and rain-showers. Here, you'll also discover an amazing outdoor restaurant and beautiful garden surrounds.
  • Self Catering: Dream Holiday (Budget) -located on the northern end of the island very close to the ferry terminal. Offers queen rooms with air-conditioning, TV, private bathrooms, and even a balcony. This is a great option if you're visiting La Digue on a budget while comfort and location are still a priority for you.
  • ...9+ more top hotel picks on La Digue

Best Accommodation Picks for Praslin

Praslin is the second largest of the inner islands and flaunts some incredible hotels and resorts. Being a little sleepier than Mahe, Praslin caters to the more relaxed crowd.

The main area to stay in Praslin is along Cote D'Or Beach. This is the main tourist strip with plenty of hotels and beachside resorts. However, there are also great resorts and accommodation options all over Praslin, including Anse Lazio.

  • Amazing Beachside Resort on Cote D'Or: Acajou Beach Resort - Acajou is a beautiful resort offering 4-star accommodation right on the doorstep of the white sands of Cote D'Or. I had the pleasure of staying here and honestly, it was one of the best resorts I've ever stayed at. Acajou offers ocean views rooms, a swimming pool, and some of the best fine dining on the island.
  • Luxury Honeymoon Suites: Constance Lemuria - Tucked away between 3 of the best beaches on Praslin, this luxury, 5-star resort is ranked as one of the best honeymoon resorts in the Seychelles. Attached is a luxury spa center complete with a hot tub and sauna set in a palm and bamboo forest.
  • Budget Self Catering: Treasure Island Retreat - Those looking to enjoy nature and save a few pennies on accommodation and food, opting for a self-catering stay on Praslin is a good bet. The best one you'll find on the island is Treasure Island Retreat. This hotel offers seafront apartments on Anse Kerlan, each complete with king-sized beds and a fully-equipped kitchen, and a furnished terrace or balcony.

Best Accommodation Picks for Mahe

Mahé is the main island and home to Victoria, the capital city of the Seychelles. It's the largest of the inner islands and has several great places to stay. Here is a quick area guide with the top 4 accommodation recommendations below.

  • Victoria and Eden Island for nightlife
  • Beau Vallon for beaches and restaurants
  • Private islands for the ultimate island experience

Top Accommodation Picks

  • Top pick on Mahé: Eden Bleu Hotel (Eden Island) - The Eden Bleu Hotel is one of the best places to stay if you're looking to be close to the Victoria and on Eden Island. It's an amazing contemporary hotel on the foreshore of Eden Island's prestigious marina.
  • Mid-range resort: Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort - This beautiful, beachfront resort and casino combo offers elegantly furnished rooms with all the facilities you could ever want. Here, you'll find a large pool, three restaurants, a pizzeria, a fitness center, PADI diving center, and a tennis court.
  • Budget self-catering Studio: Precious Residence - If you want to explore Mahé on a budget, then self-catering accommodation is your best bet. Precious Residence is an apartment with excellent reviews (9.5/10), offering budget apartments equipped with free WiFi, air conditioning, and a kitchenette on Grand Anse (west coast).
  • Ultimate getaway: JA Enchanted Island Resort - Looking for the ultimate Indian Ocean getaway? JA Enchanted Island Resort is an impeccably beautiful resort located on a tiny private island on the footsteps of the St Anne Marine Park.

Things to Know About Hiking in the Seychelles

Here are some quick things to know about hiking in the Seychelles.

  • Hiring a local guide is the best way to experience the awesome hiking trails in the Seychelles. This way, you’ll not only get to enjoy the nature, but you’ll learn so much about the endemic plants and animals of the Seychelles. The guys and girls below are my great friends and awesome guides:
    - Praslin: Medina
    - La Digue: Henry
    - Mahé: Roddey
  • Internet & LTE connectivity is not great once you get out on the trails. If you plan to walk some of the more remote nature trails in the Seychelles, it’s best to know this in advance. You can pick up a sim card with Airtel at the Mahe airport or at Cable & Wireless Kiosks on the main islands.
  • Hiking in the Seychelles is one of the best activities to do on your vacation. Most islands are mountainous with lots of untouched, jungle interior that is rich in biodiversity and has several maintained nature trails.
  • The Granitic Islands of the Seychelles are very unique. This is the only place on earth where granite islands exist mid-ocean.
  • Getting between islands is very easy. Read how to get to La Digue and how to get to Praslin. The most popular is to take the Cat Cocos ferry from Mahe Island to Praslin first.
  • Endemic species are abundant in the Seychelles. La Digue in particular is one of the only islands where you can spot the illusive Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher.
  • Individual hiking guides can be found throughout this post. These links go to detailed guides with a rundown of the specific nature trail with more photos.

Best time to Visit the Seychelles for Hiking

The Seychelles sits near the equator within the subequatorial climatic zone. What this means is that the islands enjoy a tropical and mostly-stable climate with a constant temperature between 25-35°C.

As a result, the Seychelles has great weather for hiking. However, just remember to pack plenty of water on hot days.

Furthermore, there are periods of seasonal rainfall which tend to begin in December and finish in March.

Many sources say that the best time to visit the Seychelles is during the months of April and May and October and November. However, don't be too worried about visiting in the wetter months. My recent trip was in December and I had great hiking weather almost every day!

That's a wrap for this rundown of the best Seychelles hikes and nature trail walks. Before you go, stick around for more detailed guides and inspiration for planning your trip.

Wondering where to stay in the Seychelles? Read this up-to-date accommodation guide to the best Seychelles hotels, luxury beach resorts, and self-catering villas.

Whether you’re planning a honeymoon, family vacation, couples getaway or a business trip, I think it’s safe to agree that the Seychelles is one of the best tropical destinations to consider in the Indian Ocean. From exploring beautiful white sand beaches to relaxing in private plunge pools, to hiking and water sports, the Seychelles has it going on!

However, with a total of 115 islands, it can be a little daunting to when trying to choose where to stay in the Seychelles. When I was planning my first trip, one of the most difficult parts was narrowing down the best islands to visit, let alone trying to find the best areas and places to stay!

After a lot of research, I’ve finally narrowed down the absolute must-visit islands, as well as the top Seychelles hotels, resorts, and accommodations based on my personal experience, guest reviews, and price.

Where to Stay in the Seychelles - The Best Areas

Before I get into the Seychelles hotel and resort recommendations, below is a quick run-down of the best areas to stay.

The truth is, while there are 115 islands in the Seychelles, most people tend to visit the main three in the inner islands group, which has a total of 43 islands.

These three main islands are Mahe, Praslin, and La Digue. If you're visiting the Seychelles, I recommend breaking up your trip to stay on at least, these three islands.

Don't worry, getting to each is very easy by either boat or scenic flight, and doesn't take long since they are very close together. In saying that, I'm actually going to recommend five islands in total to give you a bit of variety.

  • Mahe
  • Praslin
  • La Dique
  • Silouhette Island
  • Cousine Island

Below I'll go into more detail about why you should stay on these Seychelles islands. But you can skip straight to the hotel section for a personalized and hand-picked hotel, resort, and accommodation recommendations for where to stay on each.

Mahe - Best Place To Stay in the Seychelles For Families

From white-sand beaches complete with tropical, turquoise water and beautiful granitic rock formations, to amazing hiking and adventure opportunities with spectacular jungle views, Mahe Island is the ideal place to spend a Seychelles vacation.

Chances are, if you're flying into the Seychelles, you'll land on Mahe, the largest island in the inner island group. That's because this is where you'll find the Seychelles International Airport.

Port Glaud and L'Islette, Mahe Island, the Seychelles

Furthermore, the capital of the Seychelles, Victoria, if found here. But don't let that worry you. Victoria is very laid back and is actually one of the smallest capital cities in the world!

There are loads of beach hotels, luxury resorts, and private guest houses on Mahe, making it a great place to stay for families. You can also book loads of trips or hire a local guide to show you and the family around the island.

But, Mahe is not just for families. Many people choose to stay here either when they land or the days before they fly out. The best areas to stay in Mahe are:

  • Victoria & Eden Island
  • Beau Vallon
  • West Coast
  • Takamaka
  • Sainte Anne Marine Park
Mahe Island in the Seychelles

Praslin - Where to Stay in the Seychelles for Relaxing Holidays

Praslin Island is another great place to stay in the Seychelles, especially for relaxing and unwinding.

The island of Praslin is located just a short ferry or scenic flight away. It's really easy to get here from Mahe, and I'd say it's definitely worth a visit.

Praslin is much more laid back than the main island of Mahe. And, you'll find the same amazing turquoise waters, relaxing beaches and snorkeling opportunities here.

Anse Georgette Praslin Island

One of the main reasons why people chose to stay on this Seychelles island is to see the one and only Anse Lazio, and to take a day-trip to Curieuse Island, where you can meet several giant Aldabra tortoises roaming freely.

As you might expect, there are plenty of excellent honeymoon lodgings, family resorts, and romantic beach hotels on Praslin. The best areas to stay are:

  • Anse Takamaka
  • Grand Anse
  • Anse Kerlan
  • Chauve Souris Island
  • Baie Ste Anne (near the ferry terminal)
Cote D'Or Beach on Praslin

La Digue - Best Place to Stay in the Seychelles for Adventure

The funnest place to stay in the Seychelles is the tiny, granitic island of La Digue.

Chances are, you'll have already seen plenty of photos from this amazing Indian Ocean island, especially shots of the world-renowned Anse Source D'Argent. This beach is commonly featured in travel magazines and ads, showcasing its amazing tranquil waters and beautiful granite boulders.

However, the truth is that this island has so much more to offer. From amazing hiking to more beautiful beaches, this tiny little island is an adventurer's playground.

Best of all, there aren't many cars on the island, meaning you can ride a bicycle almost anywhere!

Visiting La Digue and wondering where to stay on this amazing Seychelles island? The main areas are L’Union and La Passe. This is close to the ferry terminal, which is where you will arrive from Praslin. In this area, there are lots of boutique hotels and luxury beach resorts right on the palm tree-lined beach.

Silhouette Island - Where to Stay in the Seychelles for Honeymoon

With the main islands out of the way, let's look at two more amazing islands you can stay on in the Seychelles.

The first is Silhouette Island. This incredible destination is best known for its outstanding mountain landscape. Life here is quiet, laid back, and traditional. In fact, only about 200 people live here, and their traditional methods of agriculture have remained unchanged for several hundred years.

The main place to stay on this Seychelles island is the Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa. This amazing 5-star resort features private plunge pools, and private tropical gardens, located right on the beach. The mountain backdrops here are absolutely stunning.

And, due to the relaxed and isolated location, makes it one of the best places to stay in the Seychelles for your honeymoon!

Silhouette Island Private Resort, Seychelles

Cousine - Best Seychelles Private Resort Island

The last island I'm going to recommend staying on is Cousine Island.

This green, tropical private island resort is easily one of the most beautiful in the Seychelles. In fact, Cousine received the best island destination award in recent luxury travel competitions.

This incredible little island features French colonial-style, luxury private villas amongst lush island greenery. The best part about staying here is that no matter where you go, you're always a 1 minute's walk from the beach!

Cousine is located just off the coast of Mahe and a private transfer to the island is included if you book your accommodation here.

Best Cheap Seychelles Accommodation

Okay, to be fair, there isn't really such a thing as cheap accommodation in the Seychelles. At least not in a traditional backpacker sense.

That's because the islands mostly cater to luxury travelers and vacationers.

However, if you are looking for Seychelles accommodation on a budget, you can save money by choosing a self-catering option. This means you get all of the facilities you need to cook and prepare your own fresh meals.

What's great about this is that fresh produce is usually quite cheap in the Seychelles, meaning you can enjoy a luxury, private experience without the huge bills!

1. Treasure Island Retreat

  • Island: Praslin
  • Best for: Those wanting to enjoy nature and explore the island without breaking the bank

What’s great about this island is that independent travelers and those who are budget conscious can also find great places to stay on the Seychelles Island of Praslin.

Planning a trip to the incredible Seychelles island of La Digue and wondering where to stay? Here’s an up-to-date travel guide featuring the best La Digue hotels, lodges, luxury resorts, as well as self catering, semi-budget picks.

I’ve formulated this La Digue accommodation guide to provide you with the most reliable and comprehensive resource to La Digue hotels and resorts you’ll find online.

A Quick Rundown of Where to Stay On La Digue Island

Top Picks:

As you might expect, La Digue is a small island, located within the inner islands of the Seychelles. It's a very popular destination to visit for its famous beaches with crystal clear waters and magnificent granite formations, as well as its many nature trails and unique, endemic wildlife.

Therefore, it's certainly worth staying at least a night or two on the island if you want to get the most out of your visit.

For an island of only 3.9 square miles in size (9.9km²), you'll find that La Digue has a huge selection of hotels and resorts to choose from. In terms of choosing the best area or region for where to stay, this isn't too important on La Digue. That's because you can get almost anywhere on the island within 30 minutes by bicycle.

However, if you're looking to stay as central as possible, then the main tourist hub of La Digue is on the west side of the island near the jetty. This comprises of two adjacent villages called L'Union and La Passe. Here, visitors will find a variety of hotels, luxury resorts and self-catering lodges to choose from. This region is also within walking distance to highlights like the L'Union Estate and the incredible Anse Source D'Argent.

About La Digue Island In the Seychelles

La Digue Island is the third most populous island of the Seychelles. It's located approximately 54 kilometers northeast of the main island of Mahe. Along with Mahe and Praslin, La Digue is one of the "three main islands". These are the islands that most tourists visit during their trip to the Seychelles.

La Digue is a sleepier, more relaxed island than even neighboring Praslin. Here, you'll find only a few cars (although the number is increasing yearly). Instead, most locals and tourists get around via bicycle. Furthermore, there is plenty of tourist infrastructure on La Digue, mostly around L'Union on the west side.

This beautiful island is unique in many ways. Firstly, it's a granitic island, which means that it is composed of granite rock. There are only 42 granitic islands in the world, and all of them are found in the Seychelles. La Digue island has some of the best examples of these unique, weathered granite boulder formations that help make its beaches so beautiful.

How to Get to La Digue Island

Ready to start exploring the incredible island of La Digue, the Seychelles? Still in the planning stages of your trip? Before we get into the list of best things to do and see, here's a quick up-to-date rundown on how to get here.

To start, you have 2 options. Firstly, you could take the Cat Cocos (fast ferry) directly to La Digue Island from Mahe, which costs roughly €60 and takes 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Your second option is to take the Air Seychelles scenic flight to Praslin, then take the Cat Rose to La Digue Island. This is a scenic option and includes a breathtaking low-flying flight over the islands.

Of course, this is a simplified summary. But, if you want more information, I’ve gone into a lot more detail on the options for how to get to the island here.

Tip: For cheap flights, compare prices and routes on SkyScanner and CheapOAir to find the best deals.

20 Amazing Things to do on La Digue Island

Without further ado, let's dive into this La Digue Island travel guide with this list of 20 incredible things to do on the island.

1. Visit Anse Source D'Argent

Anse Source D'Argent is the most famous out of all the incredible beaches on La Digue. In fact, it holds the title of being one of the world's most photographed beaches. Here, you'll find incredible granite rock formations and a sheltered, turquoise water lagoon that is great for swimming.

Visiting Anse Source D'Argent is one of the must-do things to do on La Digue Island. To get here, head to L'Union Estate and continue on to the end. There are signs throughout the estate indicating the way.

Anse Source D'Argent

2. Join the Iconic Crystal Kayak Tour

Located on the edge of Anse Source D'Argent Beach is a small beach shack running one of the most booked tours on La Digue Island. Chances are, you would have already seen photos on social media of those iconic clear-bottom kayaks floating next to the jurassic La Digue granite boulders.

Let me tell you, this La Digue activity lives up to the hype! For only €35 you'll get an awesome half-day kayaking adventure with visits to incredible beaches only accessible from the water. The best one is Anse Pierrot, which is also known as Robinson Crusoe Beach.

The Crystal Kayak tour for me is definitely one of the best things to do on La Digue! Below I've included some photos from the experience.

La Digue Crystal Kayak Tour

3. Experience Anse Marron

Anse Marron is easily one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. Here, gentle, turquoise waters lap white-sandy shores and large, granite boulders form a protected, natural swimming pool. Many consider it to be the most beautiful beach in the Seychelles!

What makes the Anse Marron experience so unique is that it requires a hike through the jungle to reach it. However, the Seychelles National Parks authority highly discourages tourists to hike here alone.

Luckily, however, there are a few great guided trips to the secluded Anse Marron that you can book online. Below I've linked to the best one, which has hundreds of bookings and a 5-star average review on Viator and Tripadvisor.

4. Unwind at Grand Anse

Located on the southeast corner of La Digue Island is the one and only Grand Anse. This wide, sandy bay has some of the bluest water I've ever laid my eyes on. At each headland, towering granite boulders pile up to form natural, protected walls that are connected by a string of coconut palm trees along the shore.

Grand Anse is an excellent beach for swimming because the water is much deeper than those found on the west side. The ambiance here is also much more relaxed, with just a single beach bar and a few small makeshift shelters dotting the shore.

Getting to Grand Anse is very easy by bicycle and doesn't require any hiking.

If you're catching on, many of the La Digue highlights involve its breathtaking beaches. Don't worry though, there are still many more things to do on La Digue below that explore more of the island than just its beaches!

5. Ride Around the Island

La Digue Island emanates laid-back, sleepy vibes. While there are more and more cars making their way here every year, a bicycle is still by far the best way to get around.

You can rent a bike from any hotel or from several stores in L'Union for approximately 100 SCR per day. Most bikes will come with an attached basket on the back where you can keep your beach towel and other necessities.

If you're stuck on things to do on La Digue and just want to explore, hop on your bike and get peddling, it's impossible to get lost!

6. Spot a Giant Tortoise

Endemic to the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles, the Giant Tortoise which shares the same name have now been introduced to several of the inner islands, including La Digue.

The Aldabra Giant Tortoise is one of the largest tortoises in the world and can live up to 200 years! One of these guide really caught me by surprise when I was riding my bike and spotted one lazing on the beach!

Tortoises aren't everywhere on La Digue Island, but you definitely can spot them around if you get lucky. If you want a certain encounter, you can find them in the L'Union Estate (below).

7. Go Island Hopping To Coco & Felicity Islands

If you want to go snorkeling when traveling on La Digue, then one of the best places to do it is on nearby Coco island. Taking an island hopping trip to Coco Island and Felicity (Félicité) Island is easily one of the most exciting things to do on La Digue.

Unfortunately, there aren't any tours you can book online at the moment. However, you can book a full-day island hopping and snorkeling trip at L'Union or at the harbor with a local operator. These trips usually run for at least 8 hours and include lunch.

Coco Island is the best island for snorkeling. That's because it offers opportunity to swim with loads of fish and the occasional cruising turtle.

8. Walk the Nature Trails

For the adventurous travelers, there are plenty of epic hikes and nature trails that you'll definitely want to add to your list of things to do on La Digue. I spent a lot of time exploring the island's interior and quickly fell in love with its dense jungles, rich biodiversity, and mind-blowing viewpoints.

Some of my favorite hikes include:

  • Anse Marron hike
  • Eagle's Nest trail
  • Romeo & Juliet (Unique Viewpoint) hike
  • Anse Cocos trail
  • Anse Songe trail

9. Hike to Anse Cocos

Anse Cocos is another breathtakingly beautiful beach found on the untamed, eastern side of La Digue Island. There are two options to get here, which I've broken down in my Anse Cocos guide. Both involve scenic jungle trails that are nearly as amazing as the beach itself.

Once you arrive, you'll find a secluded beach with a long stretch of white sand surrounded by an arching cove. At the southern end of the beach, you’ll find a small beach bar called “Coco Bar”.

However, the best spot on the beach is on the southern end, where visitors will find an amazing natural swimming pool. Here, large, granite boulders converge on the headland to form a naturally sheltered pool. The water color here has to be seen to be believed. If the tide or waves are too rough on the beach, then the natural swimming pool is where you’ll want to swim.

10. Admire the view at Romeo & Juliet Viewpoint (Unique VIewpoint)

The next La Digue attraction on this list of things to do is a remote viewpoint on the east side of the island. I was shown it by my local guide Henry. He has visited this spot since he was a young kid but in recent years, a German wedding photographer, with the help of some viral photos, made the spot blow-up. He named it the Romeo and Juliet viewpoint, but Henry prefers to call it his Unique Viewpoint.

This viewpoint is a huge granite boulder overhanging the jungle canopy. The view stretches over the green, tropical jungle and all the way down to the Anse Cocos, Petite Anse, and Grand Anse. It's by far my favorite view on the island.

If you're interested in checking it out, I recommend contacting my good friend Henry on WhatsApp: +248 2 580 533.

11. Stay in a Chateau from the Napoleonic warS Era

With so many great resort and hotel options on La Digue Island, it's always a tough choice picking where to stay. If you're after a unique experience with a touch of luxury, then I highly recommend staying at Chateau St Cloud.

This historic chateau is one of the first buildings on the island. It was first constructed as the plantation house of a large vanilla farm during the Napoleonic Wars.

These days, it's been reinvigorated and expanded to serve as one of the best accommodations available on the island. I stayed here for three nights and was really blown away by the hospitality.

12. Visit The Notre Dame Church of La Digue

The Notre Dame de L'Assomption Church is the first Catholic church built on La Digue in 1854. Chances are, you'll spot this church by accident as it's located on the main coastal street on L'Union, just before the estate.

This beautifully maintained, orange building is great for photos or a quick peak inside. I found it was quite an impressively large church for the tiny population on the island.

13. Explore L'Union Estate on La Digue Island

L'Union Estate is listed in almost every La Digue travel guide and list of things to do on the island. That's because this historic estate offers a unique opportunity to learn about the colonial history of the Seychelles, complete with some of the oldest examples of French colonial architecture on the island.

L’Union Estate is located on the southern end of La Réunion on La Digue’s west coast. It's really easy to get to by bicycle if you ride south on the coastal road from the port.

Entry to the estate costs 115 SCR and inside you'll find the historic Plantation House, coconut mill, giant granite monolith, tortoise enclosure, and of course, the one and only, Anse Source D'Argent.

14. Grab a Bite at the Old Pier Cafe

While you're exploring the L'Union Estate, make sure to drop by the Old Pier Cafe. This is a beach-side restaurant right next to a beautiful old pier. They serve up amazing food and cold drinks and should not be missed!

15. Summit Nid D'Aigle (Eagle's Nest) - The Highest Point on La Digue Island

One of the most epic things to do on La Digue is to summit the island's highest point; Nid D'Aigle, or "Eagle's Nest". This mountain towers 333 meters out of the Indian Ocean and its summit offers amazing views over La Digue's west coast and all the way out to Praslin.

The hike is not too long at under 1-kilometer return from the road. However, it is quite steep and the trail can be difficult to find in sections. If you're interested in hiking up to Nid D'Agile, message my friend Henry (number above), who is one of the best local hiking guides on La Digue Island.

16. Visit Belle Vue Restaurant (Amazing View)

The Belle Vue Restaurant is the tallest establishment on La Digue Island and is actually the starting point for the Nid D'Aigle hike (above). Getting to the Belle Vue Restaurant is a bit of an adventure in itself, following a very steep and winding concrete road nearly all the way up the mountain. When I say steep, I mean it. There's no way you're riding a bicycle up here!

In terms of great views, Belle Vue easily takes the cake! They also serve up fresh juices, delicious meals, and of course, cold Seybrew.

17. Eat Fresh Tropical Fruit on the Beach

Sometimes, it's the simple things to do that really make the trip to La Digue stand out. On almost every beach on the island, you'll find small local beach huts serving fresh drinks, fruits, cocktails and sometimes even BBQ meals.

Order a fruit plate to taste fresh, tropical fruits including papaya, banana, pineapple and coconut. This is the best way to indulge in a healthy way and really settle into island life!

Tropical Fruit from the Seychelles

18. Spot Endemic Species of the Seychelles

The Seychelles is home to several endemic species that are found nowhere else in the world. On La Digue, you'll get the opportunity to spot some of the rarest including the Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher which always catches the eye thanks to its unique blue color.

Other species to keep an eye out for include the Seychelles Treefrog, Bronze Gecko, and the White fairy tern. You'll get an opportunity to spot these animals on many of the nature trails across the island. However, if you're adamant on seeing a Paradise Flycatcher, head over to the Veuve Nature Reserve which is a known breeding ground.

19. Explore the Forgotten East Coast of La Digue

Everyone visits Anse Source D'Argent and hangs out at La Réunion. But, if you're looking for unique things to do on La Digue then I suggest exploring the forgotten east coast!

There's a convenient coastal road that runs all the way up from L'Union Estate to the far southeast point of the island. This is bicycle friendly and very scenic. I rode this stretch of coast most mornings during my visit and loved the views along the way.

The east side of La Digue Island is very quiet but there are a few nice restaurants and secluded beaches. I highly recommend stopping by Anse Banane.

20. Soak in the Magical Indian Ocean Sunsets

To wrap up this quick travel guide, the last item on the list of things to do on La Digue is to switch off and soak in those magical sunsets. I don't know what it is about the Seychelles, but you're almost guaranteed incredible explosions of color and light at each setting sun.

The best sunset spots are on the west coast, where you can watch the sun slip away behind the endless horizon. I recommend making a visit to Anse Source D'Argent at least once to watch the warm light dance off the weathered granite boulders.

Where to Stay on La Digue

Getting Around the Island

The best way to get around on La Digue is to rent a bicycle. You can rent one from almost any hotel or from one of the several rental shops on the main street for roughly 100 SCR. La Digue Island is quite small and there are only a few small hills to get over, making it the perfect island for bicycle riding.

More Things to Know About Traveling to La Digue

Wrapping up this La Digue Island travel guide, here are a few last things about the island you'll want to know before you arrive.

  • Currency & ATMs: Seychellois rupee (SCR), at the time of writing, 15 SCR is equivalent to approximately 15 Euros. You'll find ATMs near the port when you first arrive on La Digue. However, it might be a good idea to bring cash from Praslin or Mahe just in case.
  • Internet: Wifi is notoriously slow in the Seychelles. However, LTE (4G) connection is surprisingly quite fast and reliable on La Digue. There are two main operators; Airtel and Cable and Wireless. You can pick up a Sim when you arrive at Mahe airport at the stall outside arrivals.
  • Language: The three official languages of the Seychelles are Seychellois Creole, English, and French. Almost everyone speaks great English which makes travel very easy.
  • Clients: One interesting thing that I discovered is that Seychellois call tourists "clients". This isn't that important to know but something I found quite funny and made me feel a little bit fancy.
  • Cost: Traveling on La Digue isn't typically more expensive than the other two main islands of the Seychelles. Expect similar prices on everything from food to lodging. The Seychelles isn't a very budget-friendly place, favoring the honey-moon and luxury crowd. However, it is possible to travel to La Digue on a decent budget if you stick to self-lodging accommodation and pick things to do that are free like hiking and beach-hopping.

An inspiring travel guide featuring 6 of the best hiking and nature trails on La Digue. Strap up your laces and discover these incredible La Digue hikes on your next visit to the Seychelles.

When people think La Digue island, what pops to mind is usually pristine, granite-dotted white-sand beaches and tropical, turquoise waters.

But, did you know that La Digue is also a hiker’s paradise?

For the adventurous travelers out there, I’ve compiled this list of the 6 best hikes on La Digue Island. Here, you’ll find the best hiking and nature trails on the island, as well as tips on how to complete each one. All the photos you see are from my recent trip, which I hope will inspire you to visit this hiker’s hidden gem in the Indian Ocean.

Things to Know About Hiking the La Digue Nature Trails

  • Hiring a local guide is the best way to experience the awesome hiking trails on La Digue. This way, you'll not only get to enjoy nature, but you'll learn so much about the endemic plants and animals of the Seychelles. Furthermore, you'll be supporting local tourism, which the islands rely on for 70% of their income.
  • Internet & LTE connectivity is not great on the eastern side of the island. If you plan to walk some of the more remote nature trails on La Digue, it's best to know this in advance. You can pick up a sim card with Airtel at the Mahe airport or at Cable & Wireless Kiosks on the main islands.
  • Hiking on La Digue is one of the best activities to do on the island. La Digue is mountainous with lots of untouched, jungle interior that is rich in biodiversity and has several maintained nature trails.
  • The Granitic Islands of the Seychelles are very unique. This is the only place on earth where granite islands exist mid-ocean.
  • Getting to La Digue Island is very easy and there are three main options. The most popular is to take the Cat Cocos ferry from Mahe Island.
  • Endemic species are abundant in the Seychelles. La Digue in particular is one of the only islands where you can spot the elusive Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher.

6 Best Hiking & Nature Trails on La Digue

Without further ado, let's dive into the 6 best hikes on La Digue. I've formulated this list to inspire you to visit and to showcase the incredible opportunities this island has for outdoor adventure.

1. Anse Marron Hike

Anse Marron has long been a secluded, hidden gem but has recently blown up on an international scale thanks to social media. This sheltered, private beach is one of the most breathtaking beaches I've ever laid my eyes on. Even better yet, you have to earn it, with a short jungle trail starting from L'Union Estate.

However, before you head out, it's best to know that tourists are highly discouraged from commencing this La Digue hike independently. Apparently, I was told that a lot of tourists get lost on this trail and require rescue and I was told I shouldn't post directions for this reason.

2. Nid d'Aigle Hike (Eagle's Nest) - Highest Point on La Digue

The Nid D'Aigle hike, also known in English as the Eagle's Nest is the highest point on La Digue Island. The summit of Nid D'Aigle mountain rises 333 metres above the tropical Indian Ocean and is one of the steepest nature trails on La Digue.

The starting point for this trail is directly behind the Belle Vue Restaurant. This restaurant is already quite high, so most of the elevation will be covered on the very steep and winding concrete road on the way up. Again, this road is very steep and taking a bicycle up here is not a good idea.

The hike itself is very scenic, offering breathtaking views of the western side of La Digue on the way up. Overall, it's quite a short walk, reaching the summit after about 500 metres (roughly 120 metres of incline).

The summit offers the best views you'll find on La Digue. You'll get clear views of L'Union Estate, Anse Source D'Argent and even Praslin Island in the distance.

3. Anse Cocos Hike

Another one of the best beaches on the island is Anse Cocos. This beach is famous for its incredible natural swimming pool and blue water.

There are two options to get to Anse Cocos on La Digue and both of them require nature trail hikes. I've covered both options extensively in my guide to Anse Cocos.

The trails leading to this beach are very scenic, with plenty of opportunity to spot endemic animal and plant life. In particular, keep an eye out for the illusive Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher, the Seychelles Bulbul, the Seychelles Giant Day Gecko and the hard-to-spot Seychelles Bronze Gecko.

4. Romeo & Juliet Viewpoint Hike (Unique Viewpoint)

This next La Digue hike is quite remote and I was shown it by my guide Henry. He has visited this spot since he was a young kid but in recent years, a German wedding photographer, with the help of some viral photos, made the spot blow up. He named it the Romeo and Juliet viewpoint, but Henry prefers to call it his Unique Viewpoint.

The track begins off the Belle Vue Road (same road leading up to Nid D'Aigle). In total, expect roughly 2 kilometers of undulating jungle trekking to reach the viewpoint. Furthermore, getting here involves navigating a maze of rocky, jungle trails with plenty of wrong turns down logging tracks. Instead, it's a good idea to contact Henry on the WhatsApp number above and he can take you out here.

Once you arrive at the Romeo and Juliet Viewpoint (Unique Viewpoint) on La Digue, you'll be awarded with some of the most breathtaking views on the island. The eastern side of La Digue is my personal favorite due to it being devoid of housing development. Instead, you'll get to experience untouched nature and incredible views over Grand Anse, Petite Anse, and Anse Cocos.

Finishing up the hike, it's better to continue down to Anse Cocos, where you can then take the shorter trail back to Grand Anse to reach the road.

5. Anse Songe Nature Trail

The hike to Anse Songe is another great short nature trail on La Digue.

This trail begins just a few hundred meters before the access to Grand Anse beach on the southeastern end of La Digue. The track begins by winding through flat, sandy jungle before climbing over a short hill. In total, this La Digue hiking trail should only take about 20 minutes and you could even ride your bicycle to the short hill, cutting down some time.

Anse Songe is a rocky beach which you'll often have all to yourself. This beach is a little shallow and there is a small stretch of sand below a large granite boulder that is great for swimming and cooling off after the walk.

6. L'Union Estate

While not technically an official La Digue nature trail, walking through the palm forests and discovering the historic highlights of L'Union Estate is a great way to stretch the legs.

While many people decide to ride their bicycle through the estate, there are plenty of scenic trails between each attraction that you can walk instead.

In case you didn't know, the estate provides access to Anse Source D'Argent, which is La Digue's most famous beach.

If you want more information, I’ve gone into a lot more detail on the options for how to get to La Digue here.

However, in general, you have 2 options. Firstly, you could take the Cat Cocos (fast ferry) directly to La Digue Island from Mahe, which costs roughly €60 and takes 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Otherwise, you’ll want to take the Air Seychelles scenic flight to Praslin, then take the Cat Rose to La Digue Island. This is a scenic option and includes a breathtaking low-flying flight over the islands.

A quick travel guide covering how to get to Anse Marron on La Digue Island, the Seychelles.

Anse Marron has quickly become one of the most famous of all the beaches on La Digue due to its remarkably blue water and unique granite boulder formations.

However, what you might not know is that this is one of the most remote beaches on the island. Therefore, to get here you’ll be in for a short hike or a boat trip. In fact, the Anse Marron walk is commonly rated as one of the best nature trails on the island.

In this quick guide, I’ll outline how to get to Anse Marron on La Digue Island so you can enjoy this incredible paradise location.

Island Guide: Things to do on La Digue

Where is Anse Marron

Anse Marron is located on the southern tip of La Digue Island in the Seychelles. It's a remote beach that is tucked away from the often crowded locations like Anse Source D'Argent or Grand Anse.

Below I've pinned the exact location for Anse Marron which is accurate. However, as you'll see there are no roads leading to the beach. You'll have to read on for the best option to get here.

Tip: If you're still planning your visit to La Digue, make sure to read my useful guide covering the three best ways to get here from Mahe (the main island). Also, make sure to check out my guide to neighboring Praslin Island too!

How to Get to Anse Marron on La Digue

Unfortunately, the National Parks authorities and the local guides working on La Digue Island do not recommend tourists make the trip out here by themselves. That's because I was told that tourists are constantly getting rescued after getting lost on the trails. The trails are also blocked with signs. So, you would be breaking the law if you were to try to get here yourself.

Therefore, I have been told that I am unable to provide direct instructions on how to get here.

However, the good news is that it is possible to get to Anse Marron with a guide.

What to Expect at Anse Marron

Anse Marron is easily one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. Gentle, turquoise waters lap the white-sandy shores and large, granite boulders form a protected, natural swimming pool.

Anse Marron La Digue Island

Anse Marron is one of the best beaches to swim at. It's quite protected close to the shore but it can get rough if you swim far out. When it's time to relax, the view out to the endless ocean beyond is breathtaking. I visited this spot for sunset and let me tell you, it was fantastic!

Due to the remote location, this spot is usually very quiet. If you make it out here, you can say you'll definitely be off the regular tourist beat.

The Seychelles is known for its gorgeous beaches and you might already know that La Digue has some of the very best! If you’re up for a small adventure to discover one of the most postcard-perfect beaches on the island, then this guide to Anse Cocos will have you covered.

Where is Anse Cocos

Anse Cocos is located on the eastern side of La Digue Island in the Seychelles.

You'll find it just north of Grand Anse Beach. However, there is no road to get here, so you'll need to choose one of the options listed below.

How to Get to Anse Cocos on La Digue

What's unique about this secluded tropical cove is that you can't ride your bike here or get a taxi. Instead, you'll have two options, both involving scenic jungle walks. Both are included in my guide to the 6 best hikes on La Digue.

Don't Miss La Digue's most beautiful beach: Anse Marron (more secluded)

Best Travel Insurance for Seychelles

Important: All visitors to Seychelles must show proof of travel insurance covering expenses related to COVID-19. One of the best offerings with COVID inclusion is from Safetywing, which has cover starting at under $50.

Option 1: Short Trail from Grand Anse

The first option is the easiest, and a guide isn't necessary. What you'll want to do is head to Grand Anse Beach, accessible via a sealed, inland road. The best way to get around is to simply rent a bike for 100 SCR per day, plug in the Google Maps pin, and enjoy the ride.

Once you arrive at Grand Anse, you'll want to take the short jungle trail directly behind the beach heading north. Almost immediately, you'll pass a beautiful shallow lagoon with unique granite rock formations. Follow this trail over the headland and down to Petite Anse.

From Petite Anse, the trail continuing on towards Anse Cocos is very obvious. It quickly diverts away from the sandy shores and winds through a scenic, flat jungle area. It might seem like you are walking towards the mountains, but don't worry. Soon, the path cuts right and climbs another small headland before descending down to the southern end of beautiful Anse Cocos.

There are sections near the end that will look like they are leading down to the water. However, generally, if there's still a path heading left and following into the jungle, continue on that until it leads down to the sand.

Option 2: Jungle Trails + Romeo & Juliet Viewpoint

If you're up for a longer, more epic adventure featuring the best viewpoint on the island, then consider this route.

There's an unnamed trail leading off the mountainous road up to the Belle Vue restaurant (trail up to Nid d'Aigle), which cuts through the eastern side of La Digue's interior and finishes at Anse Cocos. Along the way, you'll stop at a viewpoint with a contested name. Many call it the Romeo and Juliet Viewpoint on La Digue but apparently the name is contested.

Romeo and Juliette Lookout La Digue, Seychelles

I walked this track with my guide called Henry, so I'm not going to give up his secret trail (he calls the viewpoint his secret "Unique Viewpoint"). However, I would highly recommend giving him a call if you want to take this trail. Henry has lived on the island his entire life and is very knowledgeable about everything from Seychelloise history to endemic flora and fauna species. If you don't get a guide, it's very easy to get lost as there are many unmarked, diverting trails in this part of the jungle used by loggers.

What to Expect Once You Arrive at Anse Cocos

While some of the popular beaches like Anse Source D'Argent are undeniably breathtaking, sometimes all you want to do is escape the crowds. Of course, secluded nature at its finest is what you'll be rewarded with if you make the effort to get out to Anse Cocos.

This beach is a long stretch of white sand surrounded by an arching cove which is quite well-protected. At the southern end of the beach, you'll find a small beach bar called "Coco Bar". The guys that work here are awesome and they cut me up some delicious tropical fruits following the long hike.

Tropical Fruit from the Seychelles

The beach is generally great for swimming. It's quite shallow near the shore but it quickly drops off into the deep blue. You'll need to be a confident swimmer as strong tides and waves can occur.

Anse Cocos Natural Swimming Pool (Pointe Anse Cocos)

One of the highlights that really make Anse Cocos one of the best beaches on La Digue is the natural swimming pool. If you continue on the beach heading north, you'll soon find what I'm talking about.

This is by far one of the best swimming spots on the island. Large, granite boulders converge on the headland to form a naturally protected pool. The water color here has to be seen to be believed. If the tide or waves are too rough on the beach, then the natural swimming pool is where you'll want to swim at Anse Cocos.

Where to Stay on La Digue

La Digue is one of the most beautiful islands in the world, and a place where you can find some incredible, iconic beaches. One beach in particular that really stood out during my recent visit was the beautiful Grand Anse.

In this quick travel guide, I’ll outline everything you need to know to visit Grand Anse on La Digue, the Seychelles. I’ll also include some photographs from my trip that I hope will inspire you to visit.

Where is Grand Anse on La DIgue?

Grand Anse is located on the south east side of La Digue. It's accessible via a jungle road heading in from L'Union, meaning you can ride your bike here.

Below I've included the exact location to help you find it.

Important: All visitors to Seychelles must show proof of travel insurance covering expenses related to COVID-19. One of the best offerings with COVID inclusion is from Safetywing, which has cover starting at under $50.

How to Get To the Beach

As you might already know, the best way to get around on La Digue is to rent a bike and explore. You can rent one for roughly 100 SCR per day. I stayed at Chateau St Cloud and they arranged a bike for me for when I arrived.

For directions from L'Union, which is the port-side (west) of the island where you'll also find L'Union Estate and the famous Anse Source D'Argent, you'll want to head inland to the interior road, accessible via sealed access roads. From here, follow it south. There are a few hills to climb along the way, but nothing too dramatic.

If you input the location on the map above, you'll easily find your way to Grand Anse.

What to Expect at Grand Anse La Digue

Grand Anse is my personal favorite beach on La Digue Island, and perhaps even anywhere in the Seychelles.

Grand Anse La Digue Seychelles

This beautiful stretch of white sand drops into the deep, aquatic-blue water. Along the shore, you'll see tall coconut palms above some small local huts selling fresh fruit and cold Seybrew.

On the northern end of Grand Anse is a far-reaching pile of beautiful, weathered granite rock formations that make this island so unique.

Grand Anse Sunrise Viewpoint

The first time I visited Grand Anse on La Digue, I noticed the large granite rock pile on the northern end. Immediately, I knew that I had to climb it to check out the view from the top. I was really blown away by this viewpoint, so much so that I decided to return the very next morning for sunrise.

You can access this large granite boulder crop by following the trail directly behind the beach. Once you reach the top of a small hill, don't descend but instead, cut in to the right. You'll need to use some bouldering skills to reach the top but it's nothing too dramatic.

From the viewpoint, you'll have the best view of Grand Anse, as well as Petite Anse right next door!

Continuing on to Anse Songe (Anse Songe Trail)

If you're up for a micro-adventure, then make sure to leave enough time to walk the Anse Songe Trail. This short, 1-kilometer jungle track leads to the southern beach of Anse Songe. You'll find the trailhead on the right just 150 meters before you reach the bicycle parking area at Grand Anse.

The trail is easy to follow and there's only one short incline stretch. Once you descend back down to the shore, you'll find a beautiful little secluded beach hidden behind a large boulder. Continuing on, Anse Songe is a boulder-covered stretch of white sand leading into shallow, turquoise waters.

8 Best La Digue Beaches

Without hesitation, let’s dive straight into the list. The best beaches on La Digue will depend on personal preference and therefore, I’ve kept this list unordered to help you make your mind up yourself. Note that some of these beaches require a hike on one of La Digue’s nature trails. However, I’ve also listed some beaches that are easily accessible from the road as well.

Below is a useful map to help you find each beach on this list.

The Ultimate Seychelles Travel Resource

Looking for more Seychelles travel guides and inspiration? Below are my most comprehensive guides that will serve as a great resource for your trip.

1. Anse Source D’Argent

Everyone has seen photographs and video of the iconic granite rock formations, white-sand, and turquoise lagoon waters from Seychelles’ poster-boy. That’s because Anse Source D’Argent is considered to be the most photographed beach in the Seychelles, and is commonly included in lists of the world’s best beaches.

The granite rock formations at Anse Source D’Argent make this one of the most unique beaches on La Digue. You’ll also discover a shallow, protected lagoon just off its shores, making it one of the safest beaches to swim on the island.

Anse Source D’Argent is located within the L’Union Estate, so you’ll need to pay an entry fee of 115 SCR to access the beach.

2. Anse Marron

Anse Marron has quickly become one of the most instagram-worthy beaches on La Digue. This remote beach is tucked away on the far, southern end of the island and requires a bit of an adventure to reach.

However, once you arrive, you’ll soon discover why this particular beach has become so famous. Some might argue that it’s even more postcard-worthy than Anse Source D’Argent! Large, granite boulders scatter this tiny, isolated beach, leading into some of the clearest water you’ll find on the island.

Getting here yourself is definitely not recommended and I’ve been told many tourists have gotten lost trying to find the way. Instead, you can book a guided walking tour to Anse Marron on Viator, which has dozens of 5-star reviews and is actually one of the best-rated tours on the island.

Book: Guided tour to isolated Anse Marron

3. Grand Anse

If I had to pick a personal favorite La Digue beach, it’d have to be Grand Anse. Located on the south east corner of the island, this stretch of white-sand drops quickly into deep, turquoise waters. This is an excellent beach for swimming as the water is much deeper than the lagoon at Anse Source D’Argent.

However, the surf and currents can get a little strong here, so it’s best for confident swimmers.

Tall coconut palms run along the stretch of the white-sand shores, and on the northern end, you’ll find Pointe Grand Anse, a far-reaching row of granite boulders.

4. Anse Cocos

Anse Cocos is one of the best La Digue beaches if you want a mini-adventure! That’s because you’ll need to complete a short hike to reach it. The walk begins from Grand Anse, taking the short jungle trail heading north from the beach.

Anse Cocos is located in a protected bay on the far eastern side of the island. Due to its location, Anse Cocos is one of the most secluded beaches. But, that doesn’t stop people from making the effort to reach its pristine shores.

The bay at Anse Cocos is a little shallower than Grand Anse, but still less protected than Anse Source D’Argent. The water at this particular beach is a beautiful turquoise blue, which is amazing for swimming. You’ll find a small drink and fruit hut on the southern end, and a famous rock pool area surrounded by large granite boulders in the north.

Tip: If you’re up for a longer adventure, I highly recommend calling my guide Henry and booking a guided walk across the island to Anse Cocos instead. Reach him on WhatsApp: +248 2 580 533

5. Petite Anse

Nestled between Grand Anse and Anse Cocos is another beautiful little La Digue beach that is great for a more secluded pick.

Similarly to many other beaches on La Digue, there’s a small beach hut or “bar” serving drinks and fresh fruit. The water radiates a fluorescent, bright blue, with dense vegetation making a perfect backdrop from the white-sand shores.

To get here, head north on the jungle trail from Grand Anse.

Tip: Don’t miss Anse Lazio on neighboring Praslin Island.

6. Anse Songe

An off-the-beaten-path pick for a secluded, rocky beach on La Digue’s southern coast is Anse Songe. Again, you’ll need to take a short walk through the jungle to reach it. However, the walk is manageable by almost anyone with a normal level of fitness.

At the northern end of Anse Songe, you’ll discover a minuscule, secluded beach tucked beneath a towering granite boulder. If you continue on, you’ll also find a longer beach with rocky boulders stretching out from the shore. Anse Songe is much shallower but offers better opportunities for snorkeling than some of the other beaches on La Digue.

7. Anse Pierrot (Robinson Crusoe Beach)

Here’s something you might not have known about La Digue Island. On its southern end lies a small, soft-sand beach with a majestic jungle backdrop. Uniquely, Anse Pierrot has a claim to fame for being the set featured in the 1954 classic, Robinson Crusoe. As soon as you get here, you’ll discover why. It’s the perfect secluded beach that really makes you feel like you’re stranded on a lone, tropical island!

This is one of the most difficult La Digue beaches to reach as its only accessible via the water. Luckily, you can book a tour with Crystal Kayaks which not only takes you to Anse Pierrot, but also includes a guided tour of the coast from a clear-bottom kayak.

8. Anse Banane (Banana Cove)

As you’ll find, most of the best beaches on La Digue island are found on the south or on the west coast. However, the much quieter north and east coasts still have a lot to offer. As you might know already, riding a bicycle around the island is one of the best things to do here. If you have the time, add a visit to Anse Banane (Banana Cove) to your island adventures.

If you’re looking to escape the crowds, this is a great option. You’ll most likely have this beautiful little beach to yourself. There’s also a small restaurant and bar at Banana Cove where you can enjoy a cold, sunset Seybrew, or two.

A complete first-time visitor’s guide to L’Union Estate on La Digue Island, the Seychelles. Visit a historic vanilla and coconut plantation on one of the world’s most beautiful islands.

Even if you haven’t heard of La Digue Island in the Seychelles, chances are you’ve seen photos of its iconic white-sand beaches and one-of-a-kind granite rock formations. One particular beach, Anse Source D’Argent, is a must-visit and one of the most iconic in the country.

What you might not know is that this beach is connected to L’Union Estate, a historic vanilla and coconut plantation. It’s also very picturesque, and a perfect place on La Digue to get tropical palm-tree vacation photos.

In this guide, I’ll answer everything you need to know about L’Union Estate on La Digue. I’ll include detailed information to help you plan your trip and throw in some photos from my recent trip to help inspire yours.

About L'Union Estate on La Digue

L'Union Estate is located on the southern end of La Réunion on La Digue's west coast. This estate offers a unique opportunity to learn about the colonial history of the Seychelles, complete with some of the oldest examples of French colonial architecture on the island.

L'Union Estate La Digue reflects a time in history when coconut farming was the primary source of income for the people of the island. The Plantation House is one of the main attractions and was once the home of a Mauritian Family who worked the estate.

Other attractions, which I'll cover in a bit more depth below, include;

  • Historic Cemetery
  • Traditional Coconut Mill
  • Plantation House
  • Granit Monolith & Tortoise Pen
  • Vanilla Plantation
  • Souvenir Kiosks
  • Old Pier Cafe

The best way to get around is by bike, as the island is so small it offers this most convenience. A bike costs roughly 100 SCR per day, I stayed at the incredible Chateau St Cloud and they arranged one for me.

Below is the exact pin to head to, it's hard to miss. Once you arrive, you'll need to hop off your bike to sign in and pay the 115 SCR entrance fee to access L'Union Estate (mandatory for Anse Source D'Argent and Anse Marron).

Things to See and Do at L'Union Estate La Digue

Once you arrive, there's plenty to see and do besides lazing on the Seychelles' most photographed beach. Below is a rundown with photos to help you know what to expect. I've also attached a map to help you orient yourself.

1. Historic Cemetery

As soon as you enter the estate, you'll pass the historic cemetery. This is the oldest cemetery on the island and is very beautiful.

2. Traditional Coconut Mill

One of the most picturesque spots on L'Union Estate is the traditional coconut mill. This palm-leaf roofed hut is a traditional mill where coconuts were once husked and prepared.

3. L'Union Estate Plantation House

The Plantation House is one of the main attractions at L'Union Estate La Digue. This is a historic building which has had a few owners over the time, including a Mauritian family and even the governor of the island. It has now been transformed into a small museum with a small art gallery.

4. Granite Monolith (Giant Rock) & Tortoise Pen

It's very hard to miss the giant 750 million year old granite monolith which stands proud at the centre of L'Union Estate on La Digue. This is one of the largest granite single-rock formations on the island and it's truly impressive. It seems it was once possible to climb it but when I asked I was told this is no longer the case.

However, just below the granite monolith is the tortoise pen. Here, you can get an opportunity to see some of the largest tortoises on earth. The Aldabra Giant Tortoise is one of the longest living animals on earth. They can live up to 200 years and weigh over 300 kilograms! These tortoises are endemic to the Seychelles but originally come from the Aldabra Atoll in the south.

5. Vanilla Plantation

If you continue on past the tortoise pen, you'll get the chance to ride your bike through the vanilla plantation. This is still a healthy plantation producing vanilla.

6. Souvenir Kiosks

You'll notice that there are a couple of small souvenir kiosks in L'Union Estate. These sellers have everything from local spices and rums to coco de mer nuts you can take home.

7. Old Pier Cafe

If you're getting tired while exploring L'Union Estate on La Digue, make sure to head down to the Old Pier Cafe. I had lunch here after the Crystal Kayaks tour (below) and it was just what I needed. The cafe is set on the waterfront just near the Old Pier, another great photo spot in L'Union Estate.

8. Scenic Coconut palm Roads Throughout L'Union Estate

This isn't an official highlight or attraction but snapping photos on these scenic dirt roads is in my opinion, one of the best things to do at L'Union Estate! These winding roads are incredibly photogenic and you'll get an opportunity to snap some amazing photos no matter where you turn.

9. L'Union Estate Farm

The farm is one of the last attractions at L'Union Estate. This is an active farm producing a wide range of vegetables and spices. You can head down to the farm area at the back of the estate to inspect the greenhouses.

10. Crystal Kayaks tour

Okay, now for the most epic thing to do at L'Union Estate La Digue– the famous Crystal Kayaks tour. This is the most popular tour on the island and also one of the cheapest! I was really blown away by the value this experience offered. We got to explore the beauty of the Anse Source D'Argent lagoon and beach from the water, as well as a guided tour of some of the best beaches that you can only get to from the water!

The highlight for me was seeing the famous granite rock formations from the ocean, as well as stopping by Robinson Crusoe Beach (Anse Pierrot).

11. Anse Source D'Argent

Of course, the main event at L'Union Estate and even on La Digue Island (some would argue the Seychelles in general), is the famous Anse Source D'Argent beach. This beautiful stretch of white-sand beach is littered with some of the most incredible granite rock formations I've ever seen.

Of course, many people come through the estate just to visit this beach. A little tip, make sure to get here early if you're looking to get some great photos, as it can get very busy!

Where to Stay on La Digue to Visit L'Union Estate

An updated travel guide outlining the options for how to get to La Digue Island in the Seychelles– from Mahe and from Praslin.

La Digue Island is commonly referred to as one of the most beautiful islands in the Seychelles. With highlights and acclaims like having the world’s most beautiful beach, as well as some of the most beautiful nature trails, it’s no wonder why so many people flock to La Digue on their vacation in the Seychelles.

But, how do you get to La Digue? In this guide, I’ll answer that question by providing you with the most updated options so you can prepare for the island trip of a lifetime!

Things to do: Complete La Digue Island Travel Guide

Where is La Digue Island

La Digue is one of the 115 islands that make up the Seychelles. It's considered one of the 43 inner islands, and along with Mahe and Praslin, one of the three main islands visitors usually spend time on.

You'll find La Digue roughly 54 kilometres north east of the main island; Mahe, but only about 10 kilometres from Praslin. Below is a map that you can navigate to orient yourself when planning how to get to La Digue. Read on for the best options.

How to Get to La Digue Island in the Seychelles

Below is a rundown on how to get to La Digue from both Mahe and from Praslin.

How to Get to La Digue from Mahe

From Mahe, you'll have three options to get to the island.

Update: Creole Adventures now run a day-trip tour to Praslin Island and La Digue Island. This is a great option if you're short on time but want to see many highlights like Praslin's famous beaches and the famous Vallée de Mai.

Option 1: La Digue Ferry (Cat Cocos)

The most popular way to get to La Digue Island from Mahe is to take the fast ferry boat departing daily from Mahe. This boat is called Cat Cocos, it's best to book it online in advance to secure a spot.

Ferry price: €72 for lower deck, €78 for Upper Deck, and €96 for Business Class

The journey departs from the Cat Cocos berth in Victoria, opposite the Orion Mall, approximately 9.5 kilometres north of the Mahe international airport. Traffic can get notoriously bad in Mahe heading north, especially in the morning, so give yourself adequate time to reach the ferry terminal. The website says you should aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure.

The Cat Cocos ferry takes roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach La Digue Island from Mahe. Click the link below to check times, availability and to book your ticket.

Option 2: Fly to Praslin and get the 15-minute Ferry

The second option is the option that I took. You can take a 15-minute scenic plane flight from Mahe airport straight to Praslin. From there, take the Cat Rose from the ferry terminal on Praslin directly to La Digue (15 minutes).

The benefit of choosing this option is that you will get to experience the scenic flight over Mahe and Praslin. This was one of the highlights of my trip to the Seychelles for me and I'm definitely glad I got this option!

You'll first need to book a flight with Air Seychelles. I always check Skyscanner and CheapOAir for discounted rates and special deals before booking.

Flight from Mahe to Praslin, Air Seychelles

Once you arrive in Praslin, you'll need to get a transfer to the ferry terminal, which is about 15 minutes from the airport. The best way to get to the ferry terminal is via taxi. There are plenty of metered taxis waiting outside the airport. Don't worry, taxi drivers in the Seychelles are not pushy but are instead very friendly and accommodating.

Once you arrive at the ferry terminal, you'll take the Cat Rose ferry from Praslin. Again, this is a scenic fast ferry passing Round Island on the way and only takes about 15 minutes.

Option 3: Private Boat Transfer

For those on a tight budget or for the high rollers not interested in public transport wondering how to get to La Digue in style– there is a private boat transfer operating from Mahe to Praslin.

You can book this trip online through Viator but it is a much pricier option than taking one of the public transport routes.

How to Get to La Digue from Praslin

If you've already made it to Praslin and wondering how to get to La Digue, then you might see I've already covered this route above. However, for those who skipped straight here and want a quick answer, you're going to want to take the Cat Rose ferry.

Below I've pinned the exact location that the Cat Rose ferry departs from in Praslin. The journey for getting to La Digue from Praslin aboard the Cat Rose only takes 15 minutes and is quite cheap at only €17 per person.

Everyone has seen photographs of the iconic granite rock formations, white sand, and turquoise lagoon waters from The Seychelles’ poster boy; Anse Source D’Argent. Now, it’s time to make a visit here to witness this tropical wonder for yourself!

In this guide, I’ll outline everything you need to know about the most famous beach in the Seychelles; Anse Source D’Argent, located on La Digue Island. I’ll also include photographs that I hope will inspire you to visit.

How to Get To Anse Source D'Argent

Anse Source D'Argent is located on the west coast of La Digue Island in the Seychelles. It is part of L'Union Estate and you will therefore need to pay the entrance fee of SRC 115 to gain access to Anse Source D'Argent beach. In fact, this beach is the only one on La Digue where you will need to pay a fee to access.

Getting here is very easy as La Digue is the smallest of the three popular islands to stay at. As a result, the best way to get around is to simply rent a pushbike and ride here on the sealed roads connecting the villages, hotels and resorts.

Sunset at the Beach Seychelles

I stayed at the incredible Chateau St Cloud and they arranged a bike for me during my visit. Otherwise, you can rent a bike almost anywhere for SRC 100-150 per day.

Visitors will find the beach at the end of the estate. Don't worry, there are signs everywhere leading you through the coconut trees, past the giant tortoises and straight onto the white-sand beach. You can ride your bike all the way through the estate up to a point right before Anse Source D'Argent, where you can park it free of charge.

About Anse Source D'Argent

Anse Source D'Argent has often been described as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and also holds the title of being one of the world's most photographed beaches. It's no wonder then why it's also the most popular beach to visit in the Seychelles.

What makes it unique is the shallow, clear-water lagoon that wraps its shores and of course, those beautifully weathered granite boulders. The Seychelles are the only mid-oceanic granitic islands in the world, which means you won't find beaches like this anywhere else.

Visiting Anse Source D'Argent - The Most Famous Beach in the Seychelles

Once you arrive, you'll find a clear path leading behind the boulders and onto the beach. There's a small hut right at the entrance to the beach beside two of the largest boulders. If you continue on, you'll find plenty of space to stretch out a towel. Additionally, there is a small hut where you can purchase drinks and fresh fruit.

As you walk along the shores, keep an eye out for some of the famous rock formations including shark rock, the Coco De Mer Rock and the kissing rocks.

Seychelles Best Beach
Anse Source D'Argent Beach

Swimming at Source D'Argent is best at high-tide since the lagoon almost dries up during low-tide. The lagoon is sheltered from the Indian Ocean beyond, making it one of the safest beaches to swim at on the island.

Kids Swimming on the Beach in the Seychelles

Unfortunately, much of the coral in the lagoon has been bleached from the El Nino event but you can still potentially spot a cruising turtle and plenty of fish swimming in the shallows.

Tip: Visit Anse Source D'Argent early (before 10am) if you want to get a spot to yourself. This is one of the most popular beaches on the island and can get very busy in peak-season.

Is Anse Source D'Argent the Best Beach on La Digue?

Of course, Anse Source D'Argent is a marvel and incredible photogenic. I can certainly say that it's the most popular and most famous beach on La Digue Island. However, there are many more beaches that you should definitively check out, including Grand Anse, Anse Cocos and of course, the secluded Anse Marron.
