A complete waterfall guide to visiting Pam Bok Waterfall in Pai, Thailand. Everything you need to know including how to get here, entry costs and what to expect.

Pam Bok waterfall Pai is a small but worthwhile waterfall located only a short hop away from the peaceful mountain town of Pai in Northern Thailand.

Pam Bok waterfall is a great waterfall for swimming, exploring or just relaxing in the beautiful jungle canyon.

How to get to Pam Bok Waterfall Pai

The best way to get to Pam Bok waterfall is to rent a scooter in Pai and drive 20 minutes to the parking lot in front of the waterfall.

The road is very scenic, passing rice fields, jungle, and traditional farming allotments along the way. If you’d prefer to make it a day trip, then I’d recommend visiting the bamboo bridge after a stop at Pam Bok Waterfall.

Need a private transfer to Pai from Chiang Mai? – Book in Advance for under $15!

Pam Bok Waterfall Entrance Fee

The Pam Bok waterfall entrance fee costs 40 Baht per person. Prior to 2019, visiting was free. This new fee is perhaps due to the influx of tourism that Pai has received in the past few years.

Once you arrive at the car park, there is a military officer working for the National Parks that will collect your payment and hand you a paper receipt.

Pam Bok Waterfall Pai

Although it’s not the largest or the most picturesque waterfall in Thailand, Pam Bok waterfall is still a worthwhile visit for travelers in Pai. From the car park, you’ll walk for 10 minutes, following a scenic jungle trail before finally descending into a rocky canyon.

You’ll see Pam Bok Waterfall flowing gently into a moderately deep pool within the round canyon. Depending on conditions, it is possible to climb up onto the right side of the canyon for a small, sneaky jump. However, you’ll need to be careful as it’s slippery and always remember to check depths before jumping.

Although it’s not as popular as some of the other waterfalls in Pai, Pam Bok waterfall still gets a fair share of foot traffic from organized tours.

Secret Back Trail

Although there isn’t much information online, I was told to look for a secret trail that leads up and around the back of the waterfall to some more deep pools.

I was able to find it immediately to the right before you walk down the rocks to the base of the canyon before the waterfall. Follow this trail up and around, taking care on the steep bits. Soon, you’ll descend back down to the top of Pam Bok waterfall, where you’ll have some swimming holes and a whole river area to yourself!

An inspiring hiking guide to the Monks Trail in Chiang Mai. Hike on a scenic jungle trail to Wat Pha Lat Temple, a serene Buddhist monastery on the mountain slopes overlooking the bustling streets of Chiang Mai, Thailand.

If you’re up for a quick morning adventure, then hiking the Monks Trail Chiang Mai to Wat Pha Lat temple is an incredible way to experience a slice of Chiang Mai’s natural beauty. This one is a relatively short and easy hike, but well worth it to escape the tourist crowds and the hustle and bustle of city life.

Unfortunately, the trial isn’t really frequented by monks anymore. Instead, they’ve carved new routes through the mountain to avoid the tourists. Still, the hike is far from a tourist trap, and a visit to the hidden forest temple in Chiang Mai was one of my favorite morning trips in the city.

How to get to the Monks Trail Trailhead

In order to get to the Monks Trail, you will need to make your way to the trailhead, which is located near the Chiang Mai Zoo. Depending on traffic, it should take roughly 15-25 minutes to get here from the Old City in Chiang Mai.

There are a few different ways to get here:

  • By motorbike - Motorbike rental in Chiang Mai is 200 baht per day
  • By Grab - Can cost over 150 baht, one way from the Old City
  • Songthaew - This will cost roughly 70-100 baht

I believe that the best way to get here is to simply rent a motorbike for the day. Since this is only a short hike, it makes sense to have one for the rest of the day. Also, leaving your bike at the base of the mountain also means you don't have to wait for another Grab or Songthaew after the walk.

Of course, if you're planning to spend the whole day hiking around Doi Suthep, then leaving your motorbike near the trailhead for the Monks Trail might not be the best bet. In this instance, I'd hail a Songthaew.

HIKING THE MONKS TRAIL CHIANG MAI TO WAT PHA LAT

Tip: Keep quiet on the track. The track is used by many people as a morning meditation hike.

Monks Trail Map

In the Monks Trail map below, you'll find the starting point for the trail, as well as the temple itself, pinned as "Pha Lat Temple", just to the west. The walking trail starts on the bend of this road, where you'll be able to enter into the forest and begin the walk.

Difficulty: Easy
Length: Roughly 40 minutes one-way
Distance: 1.5KM one-way

Hiking the Monk's trail in Chiang Mai is a great morning sunrise walk that anybody can do. The track ascends the mountain slope gently, with several stops along the way worthy of a photo.

On the track, you'll traverse through lush jungle and a few elegantly flowing streams. Upon reaching Wat Pha Lat temple, hikers will find a small waterfall and a magnificent view over Chiang Mai city.

CHIANG MAI MONKS TRAIL

Are There Monks on the Trail?

Unfortunately, hiking the Monks Trail Chiang Mai isn't the mystical and enchanting experience it once was. The trees once wrapped in Buddhist robes are now bare, and the monks seem to have found new routes to Wat Pha Lat.

As mentioned, there are a few unmarked side trails, which now have monk robe wrappings and which lead all through the Doi Suthep mountain area. We were told that these new trails are where the monks now walk every day in order to not be disturbed by tourists. So, if you see some winding trails leading off the path, I'd stay off them in respect for the monks.

In a way, this compromise has led to a good outcome. The monks still have trails to walk and meditate, and tourists, ex-pats, and locals are still able to enjoy the Monks Trail and the Wat Pha Lat Temple.

When is the Best Time to Go

Hiking the Monks Trail in Chiang Mai can be done any time of year. The best time to do the hike is in the early morning or at sunrise in order to beat the school and business traffic and to get great golden views over Chiang Mai City.

Tip for Expats and Locals: You can join the Doi Suthep Walker’s Facebook Group to find useful and up-to-date information on hiking around Doi Suthep and the Monks Trail Chiang Mai.

Wat Pha Lat - Forest Temple Chiang Mai

The temple of Wat Pha Lat is the main attraction and end-point on the Monks Trail. Wat Pha Lat translates to "Sloping Rock Monastery" in Thai.

This small monastery was constructed to serve the purpose of a rest and prayer stop for people and monks walking up to Doi Suthep. However, since Doi Suthep is now accessible by road, the monastery has turned into a monks' residence and meditation center.

Upon reaching Wat Pha Lat, the forest temple, you'll realize that you have several areas to explore. Perhaps the first thing you'll notice is the long dragon bridge that runs down the mountain to the edge of the flowing river. Also, there are several smaller temples and stupas, as well as many statues and depictions of Buddhist deities around the monastery worthy of a look.

Where to go after the Monk's Trail?

So, what's next? After the Monks Trail hike, you'll have three options. I've outlined each below to help you better plan your day hiking in the Doi Suthep mountains above Chiang Mai.

Continuing the Hike to Wat Doi Suthep

A popular option for people who are looking to progress onto a longer hike is to continue up to Wat Doi Suthep. This is a larger and much more popular temple. The hike here is a little longer but also much steeper. Expect at least a 1.5-hour hike from Wat Pha Lat.

Continuing on from the forest monastery, follow the river up until you reach the road. From here, there is another skinnier and unmarked trail that leads all the way to Wat Doi Suthep.

FOREST TEMPLE CHIANG MAI, WAT PHA LAT

Walk the Monks Trail Back Down

If you've left your motorbike at the base of the trail, then you can simply turn around and walk back down the way you came to Suthep Road.

Lazy Option: Hitch a Songthaew From the Road

This one is for the laziest hikers. On the right side of the temple, you'll see the main road access to the forest temple. You can walk down this road and wave down a passing songthaew to take you back to the start of the track or all the way to Chiang Mai.

For many backpackers and travelers in Northern Thailand, a stop in Chiang Rai is often a brief one, either just a stop-over through to Chiang Mai or to see the famous White Temple. My goal is to convince you to skip the typical 1-day city hop and really explore this epic northern gem. A great start is checking out these 3 epic waterfalls near Chaing Rai!

What many people don’t know about Chiang Rai is that it’s a hotspot for jungle trekking and other epic outdoor scenic adventures. In fact, Chiang Rai has some of the best waterfalls in Thailand. You might be as surprised as I was to find a huge, 70m+ plunging waterfall at the end of epic jungle hiking trails just a short hop from the city.

Map of Waterfalls Near Chiang Rai

To help you find the waterfalls near Chiang Rai listed in this blog, I’ve pinned a map with their exact locations. It’s possible to tackle most of these waterfalls in a single day trip. However, as you can see, they’re a little spaced apart. I’d suggest breaking it up to at least two days.

For detailed waterfall guides, I’ve also written separate articles for all of these waterfalls in Chiang Rai. You’ll find the links to those below each heading.

Want to join in on a hill tribe trekking trip in Chiang Rai? Consider this 2 Day, 1 Night trek and jungle stay for under $90 USD with all meals included.

1. Mae Sai Waterfall

Well, let’s get into it. Here is the first of these three epic waterfalls near Chiang Rai; Mae Sai Waterfall.

Located at the end of a scenic tea-plantation and rice-field lined road, Mae Sai Waterfall hosts not one, but two waterfalls each with swimming holes and even a sneaky waterfall cliff jump!

Getting here takes about 35 minutes from Chiang Rai by motorbike, and you will likely have this entire two-tiered waterfall to yourself!

For exact details on how to get here and what to expect, read the full waterfall guide here.

2. Huay Kaew Waterfall

If you’re up for visiting two waterfalls near Chiang Rai in one day, then adding Huay Kaew waterfall to your itinerary works out well for a full-day trip.

This one is much less-known than the other Chiang Rai waterfalls, and only just recently opened up for tourism. Similarly to Mae Sai waterfall, this one is relatively quiet all year round. The only people we met when we visited in peak season was a group who stopped here at the end of a two-day trekking and hill tribe trip.

Similarly again to Mae Sai, Huay Kaew has two primary levels. However, you won’t find a plunging waterfall here, more-so a larger, cascading flow at both levels. You can unwind and cool off by swimming at both locations, where a shallow freshwater pool waits at the base of both falls. There are also a few geothermal hot springs in the area, which is a worthwhile addition to your waterfall day trip.

The hike to Huay Kaew waterfall takes roughly 5 minutes for the lower level and 10 minutes to reach the top level. Just follow the path and you won’t miss it!

Again, for full details, read the complete guide here.

3. Khun Korn Waterfall

Some say it’s better to save the best ’til last! Visiting Khun Korn waterfall was the highlight of my trip to Chiang Rai, and in fact, was my favorite waterfall in Northern Thailand!

I’ll let the photos do the talking, but this one is a seriously impressive plunging waterfall that gushes down from over 70 meters in a beautiful jungle amphitheater oasis.

The short, but rewarding 3 kilometer round-trip hike to this Chiang Rai waterfall through banana fields and bamboo forests is also pretty magical in and of itself.

In my opinion, if you were to only visit one waterfall near Chiang Rai, make it Khun Korn Waterfall!

Read the full details and guide here.

Best Time to Visit Waterfalls Near Chiang Rai

It’s no secret that Chiang Rai can get seriously hot! However, if you visit in the right season, you’ll find refreshing weather and flowing waterfalls.

The best time to visit Chiang Rai waterfalls is between October to February. This season is known as the cool season, with clear skies, occasional evening showers, and much more tolerable temperatures.

Although it’s considered the cool season, you can still expect temperatures in the low 30s!

August and September are considered the wettest months in Northern Thailand, so if you’re visiting the waterfalls near Chiang Rai during this time, be mindful of torrential flows!

How to Get to Chiang Rai

The easiest way to get to Chiang Rai is to go by bus. If you’re coming from Chiang Mai, then you’ll need to head to the Arcade Bus station. Getting here shouldn’t cost more than 50 baht for a local songthaew.

The entire journey takes about four hours, which is fairly comfortable and usually involves a quick stop or two.

There are several buses running daily, but buses do book out in busier periods. The cheapest and best buses are Green Buses. I’d suggest comparing prices and booking in advance with 12 Go Asia.

Getting Around in Chiang Rai

Before you race off for your waterfall chasing trips, you might be wondering “how am I going to get there?” As I briefly touched on above, the best way to get to all of these waterfalls in Chiang Rai is to rent a motorbike and drive here yourself.

While you can take organized tours and pay private drivers, here are a few reasons why I think you should do it independently;

  • The Chiang Rai mountain roads are beautiful and seriously underrated
  • You’ll have more time to explore yourself, without feeling rushed
  • Chiang Rai is much less busy than Chiang Mai; these roads are great for building up your confidence on Thai roads
  • Renting a motorbike yourself is often much cheaper than paying for a tour or a driver!

If you’re looking for a motorbike to rent, then I’d suggest either staying at, or contacting the owner of Grace Hostel. She is super friendly and offers great, competitive rates on Chiang Rai motorbike rentals.

Expect to pay around 150-250 baht per day depending on the season and type of bike.

Discover the Khun Korn waterfall hike– a short trek up a jungle valley to one of Thailand’s most impressive waterfalls.

Khun Korn waterfall is located only a short ride from Thailand’s northernmost city, Chiang Rai. In my opinion, visiting this waterfall is one of the best things to do in Chiang Rai.

In fact, visiting this waterfall was one of the main reasons why I decided to stay longer in the city.

How to get to Khun Korn Waterfall

Since the Khun Korn waterfall hike is a little bit out of the city, there aren't many standard tour groups that visit this waterfall. In saying that, there are a few groups that visit here as an additional stop at the end of some Chiang Rai trekking tours.

So, with that in mind, the best way to get to the Khun Korn Waterfall hike trailhead is to rent a motorbike in Chiang Rai and ride here yourself.

Your destination will be the Khun Korn Forest Park, located approximately 40 minutes from Chiang Rai city. Getting here is fairly straightforward if you follow the Google Maps pin below.

You'll need to consider that the first stretch of the ride is on busy roads, so being confident on a motorbike on Thai roads is a must. After about 30 minutes of riding, you'll turn onto a winding forest road, which you'll need to follow all the way near the end of the road.

Here, you'll see a large parking lot and a quaint little restaurant where you can refuel after the hike. The trailhead to the Khun Korn Waterfall hike is roughly 50 meters up from this parking lot, indicated by a small signposted forest opening.

There is no entrance fee to visit Khun Korn Waterfall! This means that not only is this one of the best waterfalls in Chiang Rai, but it's also free!

The Khun Korn Waterfall Hike

Once you hit the trailhead, it's only a short 1.5-kilometer hike until you reach the waterfall. The path is relatively flat, passing soaring bamboo forests and scattered banana trees.

At the end of the trial. you'll need to make a quick ascent down to the valley floor where you can get in and amongst the waterfall and shallow swimming pool.

Khun Korn - Thailand's Most Impressive Waterfall

It's no doubt that Khun Korn waterfall is one of Thailand's most impressive waterfalls. The huge, 70-meter plunging waterfall rips through the upper jungle plateau and crashes down into a shallow but swimmable freshwater pool.

At the base of the waterfall, there is a flowing run-off that wraps around several large boulders. We sat here for about an hour enjoying the scene and trying to snap some shots.

Depending on the season, Khun Korn waterfall could potentially become a dangerous place to visit, particularly after excessive downpours. You'll need to make your own judgment call as to whether or not you can swim here.

Wait, Chiang Rai has a beach? Well, Chiang Rai Beach isn’t your typical Thai beach. Here, you won’t find Longtail boats, coconut-lined, white sandy shores or turquoise water.

Truth be told, this spot isn’t even really a beach, it’s simply a riverside bathing spot that is popular among locals and tourists visiting Chiang Rai. Well, you are in the mountains!

Still, if you’re looking for a place to cool off in the hotter months, or if you’d like to find a spot in Chiang Rai to unwind, then Chiang Rai Beach might just be your ticket.

Where is Chiang Rai Beach?

Chiang Rai Beach is located on the river banks of the Kok River, a little out of town near Queen Sikrit Park.

Getting here requires an approximately 15-minute ride or drive from the center of Chiang Rai.

You can either ride here yourself if you've rented a scooter, or, alternatively, take a Tuk Tuk or Songthaew. The cost of getting here from the Chiang Rai city center is roughly 50 Baht.

Chiang Rai River Beach

What to Expect at Chiang Rai River Beach

As I mentioned, Chiang Rai Beach isn't your typical "beach" in Thailand. However, funnily enough, you'll still find those quintessential Thai tourism cliches set up on the shore including massage huts and restaurants!

There are tall and jagged rock formations and a Buddha statue resting on a rock on the other side of the river bank. The entire scene is relaxing and beautiful. Preferring nature to the hustle and bustle of city life (even tame Chiang Rai), I found this spot to be my favorite place to spend time in the city.

When I visited Chiang Rai Beach on the first occasion, it was relatively quiet and secluded. I noticed that most of the small businesses there weren't operating, which meant that I had the entire "beach" or riverbank, to myself.

On the following visits, however, I met other backpackers and travelers who had come down in the early afternoon to relax and cool off in the fresh flowing river water. The water flow was calm enough to swim in, although you'd need to be careful if there's been a downpour.

Wat Tham Phra (Buddha Cave Temple)

On the opposite side of Chiang Rai Beach, you'll find a small Buddha Cave Temple known as Wat Tham Phra. The cave itself has a fairly small cavern, with nothing much more than a single Buddha statue inside.

There are also a few cheeky monkeys hanging about here, so watch your belongings!

The post Mork Fa Waterfall Chiang Mai – Complete Guide appeared first on We Seek Travel.

]]>
Mork Fa Waterfall Chiang Mai has to be one of the best hidden gems in Chiang Mai. Located only a short 50-minute scooter ride away, Mork Fa is a must if you’re looking for a real jungle waterfall away from the crowds of Doi Suthep.

We visited Mork Fa waterfall on a day trip from Chiang Mai, right after stopping at Bua Tong Waterfall (Sticky Waterfall). If you’re up for a full waterfall-chasing day trip, then it’s definitely worth checking out both of these waterfalls on your trip north of Chiang Mai (more on that later).

Where is Mork Fa Waterfall?

Mork Fa Waterfall is located deep in the jungle of the Doi Suthep – Pui National Park. However, it's a little bit further than the other waterfalls around Doi Suthep. In fact, it takes around 50 minutes to get here from the Old City in Chiang Mai.

That being said, you can drive nearly all the way to the waterfall down the mountain road, with only a short 10-minute walk from the entrance car park to the waterfall. The best way to find it is to follow the map pin or to use Google Maps. If you get lost, follow the directions below.

How to get to the Waterfall

The best way to get to Mork Fa waterfall is to rent a moped in Chiang Mai and ride here yourself. Since this waterfall is way off the regular tourist beat, you'll be hard-pressed to find a tour company that runs tours here.

However, if you're confident on a motorbike and willing to explore a waterfall well-off the beaten track, then visiting Mork Fa waterfall from Chiang Mai is well worth it.

Directions:

  • Take the 1001 or the 107 leading from Chiang Mai Old City Northbound
  • Turn left on the 1095 leading West
  • Follow this road until you see signs for Mork Fa Waterfall on your left
  • Continue down the winding forest road until you reach the parking lot for Mork Fa Waterfall

Tip: The regular motorbike rental price in Chiang Mai is 150-200 baht per day. I'd suggest going with at least a 100CC bike like a Honda Click since a large part of this journey is via the freeway.

Mork Fa Waterfall Entrance Fee

Currently, the entrance fee for this waterfall is 200 Baht per person.

This is more expensive than other waterfalls in the area, but we thought it was well worth it since you can spend a fair bit of time here swimming and exploring.

MORK FA WATERFALL CHIANG MAI THIALAND

Mork Fa Waterfall Chiang Mai is a tall, plunging waterfall located at the end of the river. Upon arriving, you'll see a huge semi-circular cut-out in the rock face, which forms a large amphitheater in the middle of the jungle.

There is thick jungle vegetation growing up on all cliffsides, which creates a pretty magic scene. At the bank of the waterfall pool, you'll find soft, white sand, just like the beach! This makes it a great place to chill out, swim and relax.

The pool is easily deep enough to swim in. You can even swim behind the base of the waterfall and climb up the small rock which rests behind it.

You won't find many foreign tourists visiting this hidden waterfall. When we were here in peak season, we only saw one other group of Thai tourists.

The Mok Fa cave itself isn't huge, but it's worth checking out. There are two large caverns with epic light rays shining in if you visit in the early morning. The cave is also home to hundreds of resident bats, so make sure you watch out for any sneaky ones ready to drop a surprise on your head.

DIY Waterfall Day Trip from Chiang Mai

As mentioned at the beginning of this waterfall guide, it's possible to visit both Bua Tong (Sticky Waterfall) and Mork Fa Waterfall Chiang Mai on a one-day trip from Chiang Mai. I'd suggest visiting Bua Tong first, and then heading west from here to Mork Fa.

This way, you'll beat the crowds to the busier Sticky Waterfall, while also cutting the travel time down back to Chiang Mai at the end of the day.

Bua Tong Waterfall, also known as Sticky waterfall Chiang Mai, is a multi-tiered, limestone waterfall flowing through lush jungle just a short trip from Chiang Mai City in Northern Thailand.

If you’ve visited a few waterfalls before, then you’ll know that climbing them is a slippery game. Usually, you’d have to slide your way up, holding onto vines in hopes your feet suddenly slip underneath you. At Bua Tong Waterfall, however, the dense limestone deposits and relatively tame slope mean you can comfortably climb up and down the multiple levels of the waterfalls without risking a fall.

Although limestone waterfalls are more common in places like the Philippines, Thailand’s northern waterfalls are typically found in areas with more slippery, sedimentary rock. The unique, grippy mineral deposits have given Bua Tong the fitting nickname of Sticky Waterfall Chiang Mai.

Location of Sticky Waterfall

Sticky Waterfall Chiang Mai is located approximately 60 km north of Chiang Mai Old City. The waterfall is located within a protected natural known as Lanna National Park.

I've pinned the exact location on the map below to help you find it.

Heading to Chiang Rai? Don't miss this epic guide to Chiang Rai's waterfalls.

Sticky Waterfall Directions - How to Get Here

Getting to Sticky Waterfall Chiang Mai is possible in three different methods, rent a motorbike and drive yourself, jump on a waterfall tour from Chiang Mai, or transport options including a local Songthaew or taxi.

Sticky Waterfall Chiang Mai Tour

Understandably, driving a motorbike on a Thai Freeway isn't every traveler's cup of tea. For those who'd prefer a local guide and tour, there are a few to choose from.

  • Best of Chiang Mai Day Trip - temple viewpoints, giant Buddha, and waterfall chasing- one epic day tour of all the top Chiang Mai highlights!
  • Doi Suthep and Sticky Waterfall Tour - Alternatively, you could also book this personalized, small group tour that stops at Chiang Mai's most sacred temple and includes a guided trip to Bua Tong Waterfall.

Independent Option: Motorbike From Chiang Mai

For independent travelers, the best way to get to Sticky Waterfall Chiang Mai is to rent a motorbike in Chiang Mai and drive yourself.

You can rent a motorbike near the old city for around 150-200 Baht per day. I'd recommend getting at least a Honda Click or 100CC+ motorbike variant, as you'll be driving on freeways for a long stretch of the trip.

In total, the trip from Chiang Mai to the Sticky Waterfall takes roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes. You will need to follow Route 1001 and turn right towards Sticky Waterfall Chiang Mai as pinned above.

Total Cost: 200 Baht (Motorbike Rental) + 100 Baht (Fuel Cost) = 300 Baht

Songthaew to Sticky Waterfall

Depending on your negotiating skills, it's also possible to book a Songthaew to Sticky Waterfall from Chiang Mai Old City for a decent price. The Songthaews are larger pick-up truck-style taxis that can accommodate larger groups than Tuk Tuks.

Although the driver will almost certainly start higher, you can expect to pay around 1000 Baht for a half-day trip to Sticky Waterfall from the Old City. This should include a return trip, and the driver will wait for you at the waterfall.

Alternatively, you could book a Grab, but I found that songthaews are usually cheaper, and the Grab driver won't stay with you while you enjoy the waterfall.

CHIANG MAI WATERFALL, BUA TONG WATERFALL

Sticky Waterfall Entrance Fee

This waterfall has always been free! There is no entrance fee for the Bua Tong Waterfall. This means you can enjoy climbing and swimming at the waterfall without spending a single Baht besides transportation.

Sticky Waterfall Chiang Mai - Bua Tong Waterfall

Once you arrive at the car park for Sticky Waterfall Chiang Mai, you can follow the paved path through the garden. Almost immediately on your right, you'll spot the top of the highest level.

In total, there are three main levels to the Bua Tong waterfall. There are fixed ropes on all levels, meaning you can start at the top and descend to the bottom level.

Tip: Visit Sticky Waterfall Chiang Mai early to have the entire area to yourself! Tour groups usually arrive at midday or in the afternoon.

BUA TONG LIMESTONE WATERFALL CHIANG MAI

Climbing the Waterfall - What to Expect

As you'd expect, you can climb on the waterfall with just your bare feet. The dense limestone mineral and calcium-rich deposits in the waterfall rock gives it a rough and grippy texture. Furthermore, slippery moss won't grow on this type of rock, giving it a truly "sticky" feel.

Check Out the Lower Levels

The main waterfall level at Bua Tong is the middle or second level. You'll reach this point after climbing down the first level. This section is the steepest, and there are even signs indicating that you shouldn't climb it up to a certain point.

Although there are no signs or paths, I'd recommend climbing down one more level until you reach the bottom. This section has a waist-deep natural pool that flows onto the banks of the dense Thai jungle. This is a great spot to snap some shots and enjoy a swim.

Visit the Natural Spring Near the Sticky Falls - Chet Si

After climbing and swimming at the waterfall for over two hours, we decided to check out the natural spring which feeds the Sticky Waterfall Chiang Mai.

You'll find the spring directly opposite the top of the first level near the entrance garden. There is a boardwalk and path leading all the way to a cleared area, where you will see the turquoise natural spring. The spring is named "Chet Si", or the spring of seven colors.

Although you can't swim here, it's worth it for the walk and to see the surprisingly calm source of the powerful flow to the waterfalls.

SPRING CHIANG MAI

Bua Tong Waterfall History

Bua Tong waterfall and the natural spring is significant in local folklore and history. It's said that the spring was formed after an escaped Princess had fled from an attack on the Lanna Kingdom and made camp near the spring.

The princess, named Buatong (Golden Flower) prayed for water to sustain their hideout. Her wish was granted when the earth goddess cracked open the earth, revealing the Chet Si Spring and creating the Bua Tong Waterfall.

DIY Waterfall Day Trip From Chiang Mai

For independent travelers up for a full-day waterfall adventure, it's possible to combine another nearby waterfall to this day trip.

After visiting Sticky Waterfall Chiang Mai, we decided to drive to Mork Fa Waterfall. There is a little bit of a detour, but it shouldn't take more than 50 minutes to reach this waterfall, which also cuts the trip back to Chiang Mai short.

Are you looking for the top 10 things to do in Pai Thailand for free? Of course, you are. Pai is the quintessential hub for stingy backpackers and hippies. Consequently, most visitors are as tight in their pockets as their yoga pants are on their behinds.

Well, that’s not entirely true of course. Pai is no longer the quiet, hidden paradise it once was. In fact, Pai is now well and truly paved in as a destination pin on the northern Thailand tourist trail. But does that mean it’s doomed?

Far from it. Pai is still an amazing adventure travel destination in Thailand, with a good mix of authenticity and liveliness while still housing plenty of opportunities for adventures.

Travel Map of The Things to do in Pai

Here's a quick map to reference all of the locations for the stops and attractions listed in this blog.

Map of Pai Attractions

Travel Hack: Click on the map above and it will load on your Google Maps app. You can save it by clicking the grey star at the top, which will add it to "Your Places" on your Google Maps account. This way, you have a handy digital app on the go with all the Pai attractions pinned– just refer back to this article (or bookmark it) for the explanations!

Top 10 Things to Do in Pai Thailand For Free

There are plenty of things to do in Pai, and even the activities that do cost money are cheap. However, here are my Top 10 things to do in Pai if you don't want to spend a cent.

1. Mae Yen Waterfall Hike

My favorite hike in Pai was the Mae Yen Waterfall Hike. The trail picks up in the jungle only a short distance from the center of Pai and leads through dense jungle and banana plantations.

In total, this hike takes around 4 hours return but is relatively flat and easy for most people. You'll cross dozens of rivers along the way, so make sure you prepare to get your feet wet!

2. Stroll Down the Night Market

You'll find the night market on nearly all of the other lists of Top 10 Things to do in Pai Thailand. That's because Pai's Walking Street is one of the best in all of Thailand. Here, you'll undoubtedly struggle to not spend any of your precious Baht, since the street is filled with delicious Thai street food.

However, even if you are feeling stingy, the vibe at Pai's Walking Street at night is energetic and is definitely the place to be after the sunsets.

GPS Coordinates: 19.36006, 98.44154

3. Rent a Motorbike and Explore

If you don't rent a motorbike in Pai, then you're doing it wrong. By far, the best way to see Pai and the outskirts is to rent a motorbike and explore by yourself.

Motorbikes can be found for rent all through the main town. Per day, a motorbike costs 150-200 Baht, so don't be fooled into paying more.

Once you've got your two wheels, hit the road without a plan, or pin some highlights from this article.

4. Visit the Big White Buddha on the Hill

Do you see that big white Buddha statue on the hill? It's called Wat Phra That Mae Yen, and it's one of Pai's resident Buddhist temples.

Visiting Wat Phra That Mae Yen is free, and you'll find plenty of other travelers and backpackers here at sunset, which makes it a great spot to meet like-minded adventurers.

If you visit in the morning, you'll most likely find much fewer people, most of whom will be meditating at the foot of the white Buddha. Funnily enough, the only people I saw were Farangs.

5. Spend Sunset at Pai Canyon

I was pretty surprised to find out that I was able to add Pai Canyon to this list of Top 10 things to do in Pai for free. This place is incredibly popular, especially for sunset, and still, no one is charging a cent to visit it.

Pai Canyon, or Kong Lan, is apparently referenced as Thailand's Grand Canyon. However, this is a little more than a slight exaggeration. The canyons have been formed by continuous erosion over several centuries.

While it can't really be compared to the canyon in Arizona, the Pai Canyon is still an impressive spot to watch the sunset and hang out with other travelers.

GPS Coordinates: 19.30613, 98.4525

6. Stop By Yun Lai Viewpoint

Yun Lai Viewpoint is a great spot to watch sunrise or sunset in Pai. The viewpoint is located on top of a hill approximately 15 minutes from the center of Pai.

Unfortunately, to get to the official viewpoint, you'll have to pay 20 Baht. However, if you'd prefer to stick to a completely gratis itinerary, you can enjoy pretty much the same view at the cafe just before the Yun Lai Viewpoint.

Tip: Looking for a 3-day trekking adventure in Pai or Chiang Mai? Consider this Chiang Dao trekking package. This one is the highest-rated tour online and includes home-cooked meals, homestay accommodation, transport from Pai or Chiang Mai, and small group trekking.

7. Drive to Ban Santichon (Chinese Village)

For those with a motorbike looking for more things to do in Pai for free, the Ban Santichon (Chinese Village) is a worthwhile addition to your spontaneous day trip.

If you drive to Yun Lai Waterfall, you'll probably pass it on the way. Here, you'll find a traditional Chinese immigrant cultural village much different from a typical Chinatown you'll see elsewhere in the world.

You can enjoy traditional Yunnan food, tea shops, and dragon architecture.

GPS Coordinates: 19.37103, 98.4027

CHINESE VILLAGE IN PAI

Tip: Don’t miss this awesome 2-week Northern Thailand itinerary.

8. Visit Wat Nam Hu Temple

If you're still in a temple mood, then the Wat Nam Hu Temple is a less-visited but worthwhile place to visit in Pai.

The Wat Nam Hu Temple isn't as grandiose as Wat Phra That Mae Yen, but still has a tranquil aura complete with garden views and a large fish pond.

GPS Coordinates: 19.3649, 98.41315

Wat Nam Hu Temple

9. Cross the Memorial Bridge

Another completely free activity is to visit the famous WWII Memorial Bridge located 13 minutes south of Central Pai.

The bridge was erected in 1941 by the Japanese who wanted better access between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son on the border of British-occupied Burma. The bridge was built in a fashion common of the era, using elephants to tow huge beams of wood. The steel-structured bridge which crosses the Pai river today isn't actually the original bridge from WWII, but a reconstruction.

Truth be told, this site isn't that great unless you're an avid history buff. However, due to its close proximity to the Pai Canyon, you may as well make the stop. You can read more about it here.

GPS Coordinates: 19.29745, 98.465

10. Drive to Chiang Mai

The ultimate northern Thailand mountain drive! The drive from Pai to Chiang Mai or reverse is one of my favorite routes in Thailand and probably my number one on this list of top 10 things to do in Pai Thailand for free.

The entire journey is 130 KM long and will take you roughly 3-4 hours of riding. The route winds up and down the winding mountain roads, with a total of 762 turns!

This road is definitely not one that you want to take if you're not confident on a motorbike. The hills can get steep and the turns are near hairpin on many corners. However, if you've got the skills and the guts to do it, it might just be one of your favorite Pai adventures!

More Things to Do in Pai

Alright, so if you're willing to spend a few extra Baht, here are some bonus activities worth considering. Yes, they aren't free, but they are cheap (like you).

Pam Bok Waterfall

There are a few waterfalls in Pai, and unfortunately, they all have an entry cost. The Pam Bok waterfall entry ticket is 20 Baht, which I believe is well worth it.

Located only 20 minutes from the center of Pai, Pam Bok waterfall offers calm flowing rivers and a cavernous waterfall with a deep swimming hole. There's even a secret side trail at the back where you can find a sneaky jump spot.

PAM BOK WATERFALL PAI

Pai Bamboo Bridge

At first, you'll be excused for thinking that the Pai Bamboo Bridge is a bit of a tourist trap. To be honest, I did too.

However, the 800-meter, hand-woven bamboo bridge that stretches over green rice fields was quite an impressive stop and one that I'd recommend. Apparently, it was first built to serve as a raised path for monks who used the bridge on their daily walk from the nearby temple to the village.

Entry Price: 30 Baht

Where to Stay in Pai

  • My Pai Accommodation: Wake Up in Pai - This place was one of the cheapest options for a clean dorm with free breakfast in Pai. Located in the center close to motorbike rentals, cafes and the walking street market.
  • Best Resort: Pai Village Boutique - rustic wooden cottages situated on the banks of the Pai River with tropical garden surrounds.
  • Highest Rated Guesthouse: Pai Yard Backpackers - Super cheap accommodation with incredible reviews. Clean rooms, good location, decent price, and good food.

If you want to meet other backpackers looking for the top 10 things to do in Pai Thailand for free, then this will probably be the place.

Where to go After Pai

For many, the question of where to go after Pai usually ends up being answered by Chiang Mai. However, traveling to either Chiang Rai or even a quick hop into Myanmar is also a great option.

Phu Chi Fa Thailand is an incredible mountain viewpoint located in the northeast corner of Thailand. The few select travelers who have made the long trip to Phu Chi Fa will likely tell you that it’s the best sunrise viewpoint in all of Thailand!

The viewpoint runs along the Thai and Laos border, offering expansive views over the rolling mountain hills far into the Laos countryside. For many, Phu Chi Fa Thailand is an incredible opportunity to witness the sea of mist from above as you watch the clouds light up a golden hue from the rising sun.

Phu Chi Fa Thailand

Phu Chi Fa, also written as Phu Chee Fah is arguably one of Thailand’s best-kept secrets. Typically, you won’t find many tourists at the viewpoint. Instead, it’s mostly occupied by Thai travelers looking to see the famous Phu Chi Fa sea of mist and can hence get fairly busy at sunrise.

PRICE: Free! There is no entry fee for the Phu Chi Fa viewpoint.

YOUNG GIRL IN TRADITIONAL MOUNTAIN CLOTHING NORTHERN THAILAND

Although the top of the mountain sits at an altitude of 1442 meters, it doesn’t require much of a hike to reach the top. In true Thai fashion, there is a road that has been built nearly all the way to the summit, meaning that you’ll gain most of the altitude by car or motorbike.

Don’t Miss: Mae Sai Waterfall Chiang Rai or read the full Chiang Rai waterfall guide here.

Sea of Mist Viewpoint

Whether you’re leaving from Chiang Rai or you’re staying at the nearby village, I recommend leaving early to get the best views. If you’ve never witnessed the sea of mist sunrise above the clouds, then this is an opportunity that you shouldn’t pass up.

The Phu Chi Fa viewpoint is a cliff on the Doi Pha Mon sub-range and slopes outwards towards the Mekong River in Laos. If you stick around a little after sunrise, or if it’s a particularly clear day, you’ll be able to see deep into the valleys, mountains, and rivers of Laos.

The top of the cliff is long and flat, meaning that there is plenty of space for everybody to spread out and find a spot to watch the sunrise. However, for some reason, people still crowd around the main area. Instead, we walked a little bit to the left and found a private spot with the same view.

PHU CHI FA SEA OF MIST VIEWPOINT FROM CHIANG RAI
PHU CHI FA VIEWPOINT – SEA OF MIST IN LAOS

Where is Phu Chi Fa?

Phu Chi Fa is located in northeastern Thailand, approximately 2 hours from Chiang Rai and sits on the border of Laos in the northeastern end of the Phu Pan Nam Range.

There is a long, winding, hilly road that leads all the way to Phu Chi Fa from Chiang Rai. This entire road is sealed and a moped will get you all the way. However, I’d recommend getting one with a bit of power to get you up the hills, especially if you’ve got a passenger.

Getting to Phu Chi Fa Thailand

It’s honestly hard to beat this mountain sunrise viewpoint in Thailand, and yet, not many tourists seem to make the trip.

This is likely due to the fact that the location is a little off the regular tourist path. To get to Phu Chi Fa, you’ll need to either organize a private driver or rent your own motorbike or car.

PHU CHI FA SUNRISE PANORAMA
Phi Chi Fa Viewpoint

Phu Chi Fa From Chiang Rai

The best way to get to Phu Chi Fa is to organize your trip from the closest city and tourist hub; Chiang Rai. We decided to do the return trip in one day, leaving at 3:00 AM from Chiang Rai in order to get to the viewpoint in time for sunrise. We then decided to drive all the way back in time for complimentary breakfast at our hostel. The trip takes at least 2 hours each way, and you’ll need to be pretty confident on a motorbike to drive it yourself.

If you decide to make the drive in one day, I’d suggest leaving at 3.00 AM or earlier and to rent at least a 110CC moped since the hills before the viewpoint are steep and winding.

Motorbike rental price in Chiang Rai: 150 -200 Baht per day.
If you stay at Grace Hostel, the owner can arrange a motorbike for you.

Directions by Road

The best way to get here is to use Google Maps to direct you to the “Phu Chi Fa” pin above. Funnily enough, Google actually pins the viewpoint within Laos!

From Chiang Rai, you’ll be taking the highway through flat country roads, passing farms and rice fields, before turning onto the forest roads. The last hour of the drive is very steep as you ascend and descend over the mountain ranges.

TIP: If you drive from Chiang Rai for sunrise, there won’t be any fuel or gas stations open. Therefore, I’d suggest filling up the day before. If you use a lot of fuel getting here, then the last opportunity to fill up is at a vending-style self-use fuel pump in Khun Tan, a small town just before you turn onto the steep forest roads. Keep an eye out for it on the left side of the road.

Chiang Rai to Phu Chi Fa Bus

Apparently, there is a Chiang Rai to Phu Chi Fa bus that leaves from the Chiang Rai bus station at 1:30 PM. However, I couldn’t find any information about this online, so it’s best to ask at your accommodation.

Phu Chi Fa Tour from Chiang Rai

As mentioned, Phu Chi Fa Thailand is a bit of an off-the-beaten-path destination. Therefore, there aren’t many dedicated tours that run from Chiang Rai. However, if you’d prefer not to drive yourself, you can book a private driver from either Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai here.

Klook.com

Phu Chi Fa Accommodation

If you’ve got a little more time, then it’s also possible to stay near Phu Chi Fa. There are a few resorts, hotels and homestays right near the mountain, most of which also offer trips to the viewpoint for sunrise.

To save you a bit of time, I’ve linked some of the best-rated options. If you’d prefer to compare prices yourself, you can find deals on both Booking.com and Agoda.

Homestay

If you’d prefer a homestay, then the Chill Chill Resort is one of the best options that you’ll find online. This place has small, private bungalow-style offerings for under $20 a night.

Hotel

For those looking to spend a little bit more for comfort and convenience, Phu Dok Mok Dok Mai is a popular bungalow resort with great reviews and free breakfast. The staff will also drive you up to the carpark for sunrise.

Getting to the waterfall is an adventure in itself. While the hike is fairly easy, it does take at least two hours one way. Along the way, you’ll pass through banana plantations, jungle river systems, and incredible Northern Thailand landscapes.

How to Get to Mae Yen Waterfall

The best way to get to Mae Yen waterfall is to rent a motorbike in Pai and ride to the start of the hiking trail. As far as I’m aware, there are no guided hikes to Mae Yen, so you’ll need to tackle this one independently.

Need a private transfer from Chiang Mai Airport? – Book in Advance for under $15!

Mae Yen Waterfall Starting Point

The Mae Yen waterfall starting point is located beside a campground named “Wunderland Camping”, approximately 10 minutes from Pai. You’ll find it pinned on the map below, or alternatively you can search for “Mae Yen Waterfall Hiking Trail”.

Once you arrive at the campground, you can park your motorbike and cross the first river adjacent to the campground. The first crossing gives a bit of a teaser for what to expect along the trail!

The first river crossing.

Mae Yen Waterfall Hiking Trail

After crossing the first river, continue along, following the wider road, through a banana plantation and small village until you eventually enter the thicker jungle scrub.

HIKING IN PAI THAILAND

From here, you’ll follow the river which is actually the source of the waterfall for the entirety of the 2-hour hike. Along the track, you’ll cross that same river 36 times (we counted) before eventually climbing a rather steep final section and finally arriving at Mae Yen waterfall.

Cost: Free! Unlike some of the other waterfalls in Pai, this one won’t cost you a single baht!

Hike Length: The Mae Yen waterfall hike will take roughly 2 hours each way.

Distance: Roughly 6 KM each way.

Hike Difficulty: The trail is flat and relatively easy for most of the hike besides a steep final section near the end.

TIP: It’s usually possible to buy some bananas from the small village near the start of the hiking trail.

Going to Chiang Rai? Don’t miss my favorite waterfall: Mae Sai Waterfall

Mae Yen Waterfall

Although it’s less popular than other waterfalls in the area, this one is in my opinion, the best waterfall in Pai! Once you arrive, you’ll enter a beautiful jungle oasis, surrounded by steep moss-covered rock walls.

Mae Yen waterfall is actually made up of three, steep levels that flow into small pools. The bottom bool is quite shallow and definitely doesn’t allow for any cliff jumping or diving. However, you’ll probably want to make the most of it by cooling down in the fresh flowing waters.

If you’re careful, it’s possible to climb up the right side of the waterfall to sit in a small, waist height pool at the bottom of the second flow. You’ll need to be careful since it is very slippery and remember to always keep an eye out for changes in conditions.

Huay Mark Liam Hot Spring is one of the many naturally heated lakes in the Chiang Rai province. In the popular winter months, these hot springs are the perfect place to warm up after a chilly waterfall dip- or so I thought.

Unfortunately, Huay Mark Liam hot spring Chiang Rai is way too hot to swim in. However, don’t let that dissuade you from making a stop here. There are some other nearby hot springs that you can swim at, and the National Park where Huay Mark Liam hot spring is located is worth a quick visit.

Where is Huay Mark Lium Hot Spring?

This naturally heated pool is located in the Lam Nam Kok National Park, approximately 40 minutes motorbike ride from Chiang Rai. Although this area isn’t frequently visited by tourists, there are some great opportunities for nearby adventures including a stop at the Huay Kaew waterfall.

You can rent a motorbike in Chiang Rai for 150 Baht per day. If you stay at Grace Hostel, the owner can arrange it for you.

Huay Mark Lium Hot Spring and the Lam Nam Kok National Park

Upon arriving, you’ll notice that this place is almost deserted. There is a well-kept garden, some local fishermen casting into a select few ponds and of course, the small and underwhelming; Huay Mark Lium hot spring.

As mentioned, this hot spring is much too hot for comfort at 56 degrees celsius. Trust me, you definitely will not want to stick your feet in here.

However, if you really are desperate for a warm swim, you can follow the run-off through the park which leads to the river. I took a quick dip where the hot spring runoff met the cold flowing waters, which was refreshing.

Alternative Chiang Rai Hot Spring for Swimming: Pong Phra Soet

Also located in Lam Nam Kok National Park, the Pong Phra Soet hot springs are only 1km away from Huay Mark Liam. In fact, you’ll actually pass these hot springs on your way.

However, these springs have been turned into a commercial operation and has consequently lost its natural feel. Nevertheless, if you’re intent on a warm Northern Thailand sulfuric bath, make a stop at Pong Phra Soet hot springs. So unlike Huay Mark Lium hot spring, here you can swim, bathe and even cook some eggs.

I’ve pinned the location of the Pong Phra Soet hot springs on the Google maps below.

Mae Sai Waterfall Chiang Rai is a two-leveled waterfall that is a little bit off the regular two-day Chiang Rai tourist itinerary route. This waterfall is perfect for swimming, cooling off and even getting a sneaky cliff jump in.

Where is Mae Sai Waterfall

Mae Sai waterfall is located in Mae Yao, Chiang Rai. To get here by motorbike, it’s approximately 35 minutes from the city.

The waterfall itself is on a small trail leading from a large carpark that is very hard to miss.

How to Get Here

As far as I know, there aren’t any regular tour buses or groups that visit this waterfall. This means, that if you want to see it, you’ll have to hire a motorbike and drive yourself.

Motorbike rental price in Chiang Rai: 150 -200 Baht per day.
If you stay at Grace Hostel, the owner can arrange a motorbike for you.

The drive to Mae Sai Waterfall is very scenic, passing several tea plantations, rice fields, and rolling hills on the way. The roads in and around Chiang Rai are also very good, which means you shouldn’t have much trouble finding it.

Once you arrive at the pin above, park your bike and follow the trail past the tourism shed for about 5 minutes until you reach the bottom level.

For the top level, you can divert back a few steps and take the first steep dirt trail leading up. After less than 5 minutes, you’ll reach the second level.

The Mae Sai Waterfall is completely free! You don’t have to pay to visit this waterfall in Chiang Rai.

MAE SAI WATERFALL

What to Expect at Mae Sai Waterfall Chiang Rai

The bottom level of Mae Sai Waterfall is a small little oasis in the jungle with a roughly 10-meter plunging waterfall that flows into a 2.5M+ deep, but narrow pool.

The waterfall pool is quite deep and easily enough to swim in.

Mae Sai Waterfall Level One

The second waterfall level is a little larger. However, this level reveals more of a cascading waterfall, which flows down the jagged rocks into another pool for swimming.

LEVEL TWO MAE SAI WATERFALL IN CHIANG RAI
Mae Sai Waterfall Level Two

Waterfall Cliff Jump

After testing out the water depth (always necessary), I decided it was deep enough to try a cliff jump on the bottom level waterfall.

The jump is only about 6 meters high, but a little challenging as you’ll need to land exactly in the middle of the pool where the water is deepest.

If you decide to jump at Mae Sai waterfall, make sure that you check out the conditions and depth. Also, you’ll want to avoid the shallow edges and aim to jump exactly in the center of the water hole.
