The complete travel guide to the absolute best things to do on Koh Tao, Thailand. From scuba diving to sunset hiking, this incredible island in the Gulf of Thailand has something for everybody.

Koh Tao is one of my favorite places on earth, and an Island that I’m constantly drawn back to. I lived here for over two months as I completed my PADI Dive Master Certificate, and have been back several times since. However, this island is so much more than just a diving destination!

During my time on Koh Tao, I’ve explored the entire island, visiting the best places from its epic beaches to its secluded hiking trails and hidden viewpoints.

So here it is, my ultimate travel guide to Koh Tao, Thailand, enjoy!

Quicklist: Here are the Top 3 Activities on Koh Tao

31 Best Things to Do on Koh Tao Island

You'll never be short of things to do on Koh Tao. Although the island is a mere 21 km², it definitely packs in a huge chunk of adventure!

1. Island Hop to Koh Nang Yuan

One of the most famous spots on Koh Tao isn't actually on the island itself. Koh Nang Yuan island is a short 10-minute longtail ride from Sairee Beach and absolutely a must-visit.

Koh Nang Yuan Island
Koh Nang Yuan

This double-headed island is connected via a thin, white stretch of sand surrounded by pristine coral reefs. A day trip here is usually filled with snorkeling, swimming in crystal clear water, lounging on the beach, and exploring its jungle viewpoints.

The best and easiest way to visit Koh Nang Yuan is to jump on a speedboat island hopping trip, which also visits some of the best snorkeling spots around Koh Tao.

Koh Nang Yuan Beach on Koh Tao

Travel Tip for Koh Nang Yuan: The island has some pretty stringent environmental restrictions, with no plastic bottles or waste being allowed on the island (they will search your bags).  There is also a 100 baht environmental protection fee per person to gain entry.

2. Go Scuba Diving

Koh Tao is also known as turtle island and is famous for being the Scuba Diving mecca of South East Asia.

This is one of the cheapest places on earth to complete your open-water scuba course.

The diving on Koh Tao is excellent, with clear water, healthy reefs, and very consistent conditions. Due to the island's geography, there is usually a few decent dive sites that are calm, no matter the weather.

Scuba Diving on Koh Tao Reef

Additionally, travelers will find many reputable dive centers all over the island where you can jump on a guided dive (if you're certified), or do your Open Water, Advanced, Rescue, Dive Master, or even Instructor course!

3. Go Beach-Hopping on Koh Tao

It wouldn't be a tropical Thai island without some epic beaches.

There are many great sandy beaches and secluded, rocky coves with crystal clear water and coral reef for swimming or snorkeling. So, whether you're into water sports or lounging on white sand, Koh Tao has you covered.

I recommend renting a scooter from one of the shops in Sairee Beach for 150 Thai Baht and exploring the beautiful bays, shallow waters, and popular beaches on the tiny island including:

  • Freedom Beach
  • Sai Daeng Beach
  • Tanote Bay
  • Shark Bay
  • Hin Wong Bay
  • Sai Nuan Beach
  • Chalok Baan Kao bay

4. John Suwan Viewpoint

If you're looking to get away from the craziness of Sairee and the scuba hum, there are some decent hikes to be had just a short scooter ride away. For such a small island, Koh Tao has its fair share of viewpoints and short hikes.

One of the best hikes is John Suwan View Point. Although this is a fairly short hike, you will be rewarded with some of the most spectacular views on the island. Walking only 10 minutes up from the entrance to Freedom Beach, you will reach a rocky outcrop that stretches out at the southernmost point of Koh Tao.

The view spans over the adjacent bays, with a thin section of tropical jungle with palm trees in between.

The entrance fee for John Suwan Viewpoint is 100 Thai Baht.

Wondering How to Get to Koh Tao?

The cheapest and best way to get to Koh Tao is to take the Lomprayah Ferry. You can book this online in advance using the links below.

5. The Koh Nang Yuan Terrace Sunset Viewpoint

Island life means epic sunsets. You'd be hard-pressed to witness a bad sunset on Koh Tao. However, a great spot to catch the sunset is a secret sunset place just in front of a popular tourist resort.

Nang Yuan Terrace offers you views of the sun setting on the water, right beside Koh Nang Yuan. You can also witness Sairee Beach nightlife come alive from this terrace! Truly one of the best viewpoints on Koh Tao!

6. Snorkel with Black Tip Reef Sharks at Shark Bay

If you've come to Koh Tao to check out the marine life, then you might have heard about the famous Black Tips at Shark Bay.

This is a small bay on the South East side of the island. You can snorkel with these sharks every day from 6:00 to 9:00 am in the shallows of the bay.

There are also plenty of turtles that hide in Shark Bay, seemingly to get away from the craziness of Sairee. I recommend visiting in the early morning for the highest chance of swimming with these amazing sea animals.

7. Koh Tao Snorkeling Trip

If you don't want to go scuba diving but still want to experience the underwater world, then a great way to do so is to jump on board the popular Koh Tao snorkeling trip.

Snorkeling on Koh Tao, Thailand

This is a full-day boat trip visiting some of the top snorkeling locations on Koh Tao, including:

  • Koh Nang Yuan
  • Hin Wong Bay
  • Aow Leuk Bay
  • Shark Bay
  • Mango

This is a fully decked out boat, complete with an upstairs deck and even a water slide.

8. Love Koh Tao Viewpoint

Many of the viewpoints have small bars and restaurants that are set up at the top, including the famous "Love Koh Tao" viewpoint.

This is a great place to catch the sunset, and accessible via a steep road leading up from nearby Tanote Bay. At the top, there's a famous love heart selfie sign, which is where the name comes from.

Wondering Where to Stay on Koh Tao?

I've written a comprehensive hotel & accommodation guide covering all the best places to stay on the island for all budgets. Don't miss it!

9. Cliff Jumping at Tanote Bay

Koh Tao also has opportunities for cliff jumping. One of the best spots to do this is in Tanote Bay. Although it's not the tallest drop, Tanote Bay has a modest rocky outcrop situated in the center of the bay.

The jump is roughly 5m into crystal clear water filled with pristine reefs.

We chose to come to Tanote Bay several times in between diving to relax on the big rock and enjoy the relative calmness of the area.

10. Go Freediving

Freediving is absolutely taking the underwater world by storm. There are loads of freediving shops and schools popping up everywhere in Koh Tao.

One of the best and most well-renowned is Apnea Total. Similarly to the scuba diving scene, you can find very cheap prices for world-class freediving training. They offer programs from beginner all the way to competitive-level freediving.

Free Diving on Koh Tao

Although I didn't sign up at any schools, I have spoken to a few people who were undertaking their master-level training and swore by the quality of freediving schools in Koh Tao.

If you've already done some freediving and just want to head out with a buddy. I can recommend an awesome secluded freediving spot tucked-away training grounds on the Eastern Side of Koh Tao, just in front of Moondance Magic Resort.

However, it takes a bit of local know-how to get down there.

Freediver on Koh tao

11. Visit Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan (Ko Pha Ngan) is another popular island located close to Koh Tao and famous for its crazy Full Moon Party which happens on the night and on either side of the full moon.

However, other than the party, there are plenty of fun things to do on Koh Phangan, including some epic beaches and viewpoints.

It's quite easy to get to Koh Phangan– simply book your Lomprayah Ferry ticket online and show up at Mae Haad port. Although it is possible to visit on a day trip, I recommend spending at least a night here.

Fish and coral at Koh Phangan

12. Visit the Only Animal Clinic on the Island

Although this is undeniably one of the most un-touristy things that you could do on Koh Tao, if you're an animal lover, definitely visit the animal clinic in Cha Lok. Koh Tao Animal Clinic is a not-for-profit organization that operates completely on donations and volunteer support.

This is the only clinic and veterinary facility on the island. For such a small clinic with little funds, they do a great job of desexing and caring for the thousands of animals on the island.

Dog on Koh Tao

If you have a few dollars left from lunch, why don't you go down and sponsor a stray? It doesn't cost a lot to help an injured or sick dog or cat, and a little change goes a long way.

If you're staying for a longer period of time and looking to volunteer, head in and ask for Yo or Jae and see if they have anything for you to do.

13. Hike to the Abandoned Resort

If you're looking for a day of adventure to a secluded spot, the abandoned resort is one of the most underrated spots to visit on Koh Tao. The resort is tucked away on the far Eastern Corner of Koh Tao at Laem Thian Beach.

You will need to hike through the jungle for an hour to reach the resort. Once you get there, you can explore the empty rooms, reception area, and rooftops. The beach is also one of my favorite beaches on Koh Tao. This is a great spot to swim, snorkel, and cliff jump.

You might even be lucky enough to spot some famous Koh Tao turtles.

14. Grab Some Koh Tao Street Pad Thai at Sairee Beach

If you're looking for a cheap meal in between dives, look no further than the Pad Thai street vendors in Sairee. You can find the best ones just near the 7/11 on the Northern side of Sairee Beach.

For 50 Baht, you can pick up a decently sized Pad Thai with peanuts. Not bad.

Eating Street food in Thailand

15. Mango Viewpoint

Mango Viewpoint is another epic lookout spot situated on the north end of Koh Tao. This one is just a short 15-minute drive from Sairee Beach, following a sealed but very steep road to the top of the hill.

At the top, you'll find a small bar, where you'll need to pay the 100 baht entrance fee.

However, the views are definitely worth it, especially if you make the trip for sunset!

16. Join the Famous Koh Tao Pub Crawl

It's no secret that the nightlife in Koh Tao can get pretty wild and it all starts on the Koh Tao Pub Crawl. If you're anywhere near Sairee after 6:00 PM then it's impossible to miss the black singlet gang moving from pubs to cabaret shows across Sairee.

Bar Crawl on Koh Tao Island

The pub crawl is actually one of the top three biggest in the entire world. For its size, it's pretty well run and stops at some cool bars. If you're looking to join in, meet at Choppers Bar around 6:00 pm.

Sairee Beach Sunset on Koh Tao

17. Relax on Freedom Beach

Freedom Beach is one of my favorite beaches on Koh Tao. While it takes just 10 minutes or so to ride here on a scooter, it definitely feels like you're on a different island.

The white sand and orange rocks make for a perfect palette when mixed with the clear, turquoise water. There are usually very few tourists at Freedom Beach, making it the perfect place to relax and unwind.

Freedom Beach on Koh Tao Island

18. Rent SUPs on Sairee Beach

In my opinion, the best way to see the sunset on Sairee Beach is from a stand-up paddleboard. It won't be difficult for you to find a place to rent a SUP on Sairee. Just walk around to any of the beachfront dive shops and they will most likely have them.

A SUP on Sairee will cost anywhere from 100 to 200 baht per hour. If you're diving on Koh Tao, ask your dive shop to see if they will give you a discount on board hire.

Stand Up Paddleboard at Sunset

19. Watch the Fire Dancers on Sairee Beach

There's no better way to end a long day of scuba diving and hiking than to relax on the beach with a Chang and watch the nightly fire dance performance. The local Thai performers head down to Sairee every night to perform for the crowds.

The best place to catch them is at Lotus Bar just after sunset.

20. Snorkel at Hin Wong Bay

Visiting Hin Wong Bay is one of the top things to do for travelers looking to get off the beaten path on Koh Tao Island.

Ao Hin Wong is a rocky beach with a small bar and a narrow stretch of orange sand. The bay is a popular dive site, but is also great for snorkeling as you can explore the coral and schooling fish just meters off the shore!

Hin Wong Bay Beach on Koh Tao

21. Try Muay Thai

Like most of the Thai Islands, Koh Tao has a Muay Thai gym, as well as regular Muay Thai fight nights. I've trained at both of the gyms on the island, but my favorite is Monsoon Gym, found on the main road running from Sairee to Mae Haad.

Muay Thai is the bloodline of Thai culture and a must-do experience when in Southeast Asia. Just be prepared for a hard workout!

Muay Thai in Thailand

22. Visit Koh Samui

Koh Samui is one of the most popular islands in the Gulf of Thailand. As the second largest Thai Island, this vacation spot is lined with beach bars, beautiful beaches, and luxury resorts.

This is a huge island and it would take more than just a day to explore all of the popular activities. However, if you have the time, it's certainly worth visiting. The average ferry crossing time is just 2 hours and 45 minutes from Mae Haad.

Boat at Koh Tao Beach

23. Baby Rasta Bar

Looking for one of the coolest bars on Koh Tao? If you're into live music and chill vibes, make sure to stop by Baby Rasta– a treehouse bar serving everything you'd expect to find at a Reggae Bar.

Baby Rasta Bar

24. Sunset Viewpoint

Known as "Little Viewpoint", "High Rock View Point", and "Koh Tao Sunset Viewpoint", this off-the-beaten-path viewpoint at the back of Sairee is a great place to catch the sunset. The large outcrop offers panoramic views of Sairee Beach from above.

This is a west-facing viewpoint with a huge boulder that is perfect to catch the last sunrays. You'll find it pinned on Google as "Sunset Point View", and there is no entrance fee here.

Sunset Viewpoint on Koh tao

25. Thai Massage at Sairee

After a long day of scuba diving, hiking, or exploring the fun things to do on the island, a great option is to opt for a Thai massage from one of the many parlours along Sairee Beach.

Prices are very reasonable, ranging from 150-250 Thai Baht per hour.

26. Thai Longtail Boat Tour

Looking for an easy and cheap way to explore the island? Head down to Sairee Beach in the morning and speak to one of the Longtail boat drivers. Many will offer to take you over to Koh Nang Yuan for around 150 Thai Baht.

Koh Tao Boat ride

27. High Bar

High Bar is a small reggae bar at the very top of Koh Tao in the Chalok Baan Kao district.

This bar is quite difficult to get to due to a very steep road leading right up the mountain. However, this is definitely one of the funnest places to hang out, and sports some pretty great views if you get here early for sunset.

28. Take a Thai Cooking Class

Want to learn how to cook delicious Pad Thai or Penang curry.

The famous Thai cooking class with Parawan is a home-style cooking lesson where travelers get the opportunity to learn how to cook delicious, and authentic Thai food.

With close to 100 5-star reviews on Viator, this is definitely one of the most popular activities on Koh Tao!

Pad Thai cooking class

29. Koh Tao Night Market

Just across from the Koh Tao leisure park (mini golf) is an awesome local night market. Here you'll get the chance to pick up some small crafts like jewelry and purses, as well as some delicious food and fresh produce for a great price!

30. Wat Koh Tao Temple

On the main road connecting Sairee to Mae Haad, there is a beautiful Buddhist temple perched on the coast side of the road.

Named Wat Koh Tao, this modern Thai temple is worth a quick visit since it's the only Buddhist temple on the island!

31. Dive at Sail Rock - The Best Thing to do on Koh Tao for Scuba Divers

While there are plenty of great dive sites on Koh Tao like the Chumphon pinnacle, Lighthouse, White Rock, Shark Island, and the HTMS Sattakut wreck, none even come close to Sail Rock!

This is considered the diving highlight in the Gulf of Thailand and is a frequent whale shark hot spot. However, it is quite deep and far from Koh Tao, meaning most dive schools don't visit every day, and you'll need your Advanced Open Water ticket.

So, if you want to dive at Sail Rock and its epic Chimney, I recommend contacting several dive shops in advance.

Where to Stay on Koh Tao - Accommodation Guide

There are several options for travelers wondering where to stay on Koh Tao island. Generally speaking, most people like to stay near Sairee Beach to be close to all the highlights and things to do. However, you can also stay near Mae Head, or a bit further up the mountain from Sairee as well.

To save you time searching the web, I've listed some of the best options for where to stay on Koh Tao below.

  • Best Luxury Pick: Jamahkiri Resort & Spa - a really great bang-for-buck luxury resort. Guests will find this one on the beachfront of Shark Bay in a quiet and secluded location away from the hustle and bustle.
  • Best self-catering villa: Phandara Pool Villas - a luxury option for those who want their own kitchen & pool.
  • Best Backpacker Hostel: Summer Guesthouse - located within walking distance of the dive shops on Sairee beach and of course, the nightly pub crawls– this is the top budget option with a great vibe.

Long-Term Accommodation on the Island

If you're staying on the island for a while, then I'd highly recommend getting a monthly lease.

There are dozens of apartments available for under $300 per month. They typically have a balcony view, their own kitchen, and aircon.

If you're going to take this route, look up the Koh Tao Rooms for Rent Facebook group.

How to Get to Koh Tao

There are several options available for travelers wanting to get to Koh Tao. The fastest way is to get a flight to neighboring Koh Samui and then take a quick ferry to Koh Tao.

However, unless you score a cheap flight ticket to Koh Samui, this option is most likely going to be the most expensive.

The Cheapest Option to get to Koh Tao: Bus and Ferry

Usually, flights to and from Bangkok and Phuket are going to be the cheapest in Thailand. Luckily, there are also several buses that run from Phuket and Bangkok and connect to Koh Tao via a bus.

Book: Bus & Ferry Kombo from Bangkok
Book: Ferry from Surat Thani

Stitching together a bus and ferry combo is completely possible by yourself. However, if you want to save time and pay the same money, then I'd recommend just buying a combined bus and ferry ticket from Bangkok. For travelers coming from Phuket, simply book a bus to Surat Thani, then get the ferry from there.

These combined tickets are the faster-speed catamarans and air-conditioned coaches that will take you the whole way. You also won't get ripped off for an expensive transfer at the ferry terminal as this is also included.

Cha Lok Bay Koh Tao

When is the Best Time To Visit Koh Tao

Koh Tao enjoys hot tropical weather patterns and travel will depend on the monsoon season. If you're going to spend a lot of time in the water, then the best time to visit Koh Tao is from March to May, when the weather is hotter and the visibility is good.

This is also the best time to visit Koh Tao if you're looking to spot a whale shark!

May to October is also another great time to visit Koh Tao. This season sees the start of the stronger winds sweeping across the island. However, the weather is still hot, at around 32 degrees and you'll enjoy some light evening showers.

A useful guide to the John Suwan Viewpoint at the southern tip of Koh Tao Island. Find out how to get here and what to expect!

Koh Tao is one of those islands that seems to have it all. If you’re looking for awesome lookouts – John Suwan viewpoint is up there with the best!

John Suwan looks over both the East and West coast of Koh Tao. You’ll find it located at the very southern tip of the island, offering a unique view that should be on the list of everyone’s top things to do on Koh Tao!

How to get to John Suwan Viewpoint on Koh Tao

Those heading from the main tourist beat of Sairee or Mae Head will need to take a moped over to Freedom Beach. It shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to reach this beach from almost anywhere on Koh Tao.

The viewpoint is best reached by parking your bike at the top of Freedom Beach parking area and then walking the trail up to John Suwan Viewpoint.

Once you reach the parking lot, walk past the resort, past the signs for freedom beach and follow the dirt road leading up to the left. Next, follow this road until you reach a small tent which is set up by the owner of the land.

Map of John Suwan Lookout walk

John Suwan Viewpoint Entrance Fee

Because this viewpoint is on private land, the owner will ask for a fee. It costs 100 baht per person to reach the top of the viewpoint.

Hiking up to the top of the Viewpoint

The hike up is short, only 500 meters and should only take about 10 minutes. However, as you probably already know, it can be very hot work hiking even short distance on Koh Tao.

There are also parts which require a bit of scrambling. There are some ropes set up for those that need an extra hand scrambling up the rocks. However, any able-bodied person will be able to reach the viewpoint.

Hiking in Koh Tao

Travel Tip: You might also run into a pack of dogs that live on the land. Don't worry, these guys are friendly but become extremely territorial if they see or hear other street dogs. With a viewpoint this epic, I'd be pretty territorial too.

The View from John Suwan Viewpoint

The view from John Suwan viewpoint is spectacular.

The seemingly endless row of palm trees in the middle crater out to reveal an almost perfectly symmetrical coastline filled with tropical trees.

Keep your eye out for turtles swimming below in Shark Bay.

Where Does the Name John Suwan Come From?

This viewpoint was discovered by John Suwan, a local landowner Mr. Suwan and his friend; John. Hence the name; John Suwan Viewpoint.

It has now become one of the most popular viewpoints on Koh Tao for those looking to get out of Sairee.

Don't Miss Freedom Beach Near John Suwan

Since you are already considering checking out the viewpoint, why not check out neighboring Freedom Beach. This is my personal favorite beach on Koh Tao.

It is usually very quiet, has crystal clear water and hammocks already set up for free use.

A quick guide to finding the best beaches on Koh Tao, Thailand. From secluded, white sand beaches to sprawling party hubs, Koh Tao has you covered!

You might be surprised to know that some Koh Tao boasts some of Thailand’s best beaches!

Whether you’re looking for a great snorkeling or freediving spot, or just a scenic cove for swimming or cliff jumping– this updated Koh Tao beach guide has you covered.

Beach on Koh Tao Island

Koh Tao Beach Map

I spent just over two months on Koh Tao completing my Dive Master program, so I had plenty of time to check out these beaches and to make a good call on which ones would make the list. Keep in mind this list isn't in any specific order and will depend on what you are looking for.

Check out the map to find the locations of all of the beaches on Koh Tao in the list below.

Map with beaches on Koh Tao

Travel Hack: Click on the map of the Koh Tao beach locations above and it will load on your Google Maps app. You can save it by clicking the grey star at the top, which will add it to "Your Places" on your Google Maps account. This way, you have a handy digital app on the go with all the beaches pinned– just refer back to this article (or bookmark it) for the explanations!

8 Best Beaches on Koh Tao

1. Koh Nang Yuan

Koh Nang Yuan isn't really one of the beaches on Koh Tao, but a very small double-headed island about half a kilometer off the North-West coast of the island.

This is one of the most famous and recognizable photo spots in the Gulf of Thailand, with an awesome viewpoint looking over a skinny stretch of white sand connecting the two island heads– definitely a must-visit!

To get here, you'll want to jump on the epic day trip from Sairee Beach, since you need a boat to get here.

Koh Nang Yuan Beach on Koh Tao

2. Shark Bay (Haad Thien Beach)

Shark Bay is located on the Southern facing side of Koh Tao.

This beach is famous for its snorkeling and the Black Tip Reef Sharks that frequent the shallows in the early mornings. If you're looking to swim with the sharks, check out this post detailing how and when you will need to visit this beach.

The actual beach (Haad Thien Beach) is privately owned by the resort. You can either drive to the resort and pay for entry or simply enter the bay from the cliff side stairs.

The best route to access the beach is to head to OK2 Bungalows and walk down the cliff-side ramp until you reach the water.

Once you are at the water, there is a bamboo walkway over the jagged rocks around the side of the bay. You can either chill out once you reach the smooth rocks and snorkel in the bay, or keep walking around for some small little cliff jump spots of 2 -3 meters.

Shark Bay Beach on Koh Tao

3. Freedom Beach

Freedom beach is one of my favorite beaches on Koh Tao. This small, sheltered white-sand beach has epic turquoise water and a quiet surf ambiance without the waves. There are some hammocks hanging from the trees just behind the water's edge.

Freedom Beach, Koh Tao

Freedom Beach is on the opposite side of Shark Bay, and can be reached by riding about 3 minutes passed the turnoff to OK2 Bungalows. There will be a short stretch of dirt road before reaching the car park for a resort. Keep walking down and you will see a sign for Freedom Beach.

The owners of the small restaurant do a pretty great job of keeping the beach clean, so if you want to thank them, buy a drink or snack. Just remember to take your trash with you.

Freedom Beach on Koh Tao Island

4. Tanote Bay

Although Tanote Bay is on the other side of the Island from the hustle of Sairee, it is one of the most popular beaches on Koh Tao. This is largely due to the awesome snorkeling and cliff jumping.

Tanote Bay, Koh Tao

To get to Tanote Bay from Sairee, head towards Cha Lok until you see a large sign on your left. You will pass the small and only animal clinic on the island and continue up and over the hill. Continue straight on this road until you reach the end, where you will see a small dirt road that continues all the way to the beach.

This main road is one of the most scenic in Koh Tao, offering epic panoramic views. We found ourselves stopping most times along the road to check out the epic views of the island coast.

There is a large rock surfacing about 4m out of the water at Tanote Bay. This rock has some of the best snorkeling out of the other beaches on Koh Tao. You can also climb to the top of the rock to jump off into the deep water below.

Tanote Bay, Koh Tao

5. Hin Wong Bay

Hin Wong Bay is another epic bay with a small rocky beach on Koh Tao. This spot is a little quieter than other beaches on Koh Tao, mainly due to the monster hill that you have to ride up to reach it.

To get to Hin Wong Bay, ride towards Smile Mart from the Sairee Beach main area. Keep riding along this main road, past Smile Mart, and up the hill. It is quite steep and you will most likely need at least a 110cc scooter to get up this one.

Hin Wong Bay on Koh Tao

Once you've reached the top of the hill, you can check out the spectacular views of Sairee, before riding down the other side of the hill towards Hin Wong Bay.

Many people like to visit Hin Wong Bay for snorkeling or simply just relaxing on the rocky beach. There are also many dive boats that moor here when the weather is rough on the Sairee, Western Side of Koh Tao.

6. Cha Lok Bay

Cha Lok Bay is a large beach stretched by a long strip of white sand. There are a few boats moored up on this bay, but the water is clear and much better for swimming than the poplar Sairee Beach.

This beach is fairly easy to find as many dive shops are scattered along the stretch of the beach. To get to Cha Lok Bay, head towards Cha Lok town and keep riding past the turnoff to Tanote Bay. Once you reach Koh Tao Resort, you can walk through the gaps in the many resorts and dive shops and onto the beach.

Cha Lok Bay Koh Tao Thailand

Although the snorkeling isn't as good as some of the other beaches on Koh Tao, Cha Lok bay is great for spending the day on the beach or at one of the beach-side bars. This beach is also right next to the popular John Suwan Lookout.

7. Sairee Beach

Everyone heading to Koh Tao will end up at Sairee Beach at one point or another. Whether if it's for the famous Koh Tao pub crawl, or looking for dive shops to organize a Padi certificate with, Sairee Beach is the main tourist area of Koh Tao.

It's not hard to miss this beach, but I found the best spots were on the northern tip of the beach, away from the longtails and dive boats that are coming in and out of the bay.

Sairee Beach, Koh Tao

There are also some great bars along the stretch of the beach. Sairee is great for sunset, as you can watch the sun disappear behind the horizon.

Tip: Make sure to check out the fire throwers who perform nightly along the stretch of Sairee beach.

8. Abandoned Resort Beach (Laem Thian Beach)

The Abandoned Resort is one of my favorite beaches on Koh Tao. A once-bustling resort is now empty and deserted. Due to the face that it takes around one hour to walk here, you will usually also have the whole bay to yourself.

After checking out the abandoned resort, you have the option of snorkeling in Laem Thain Bay, or cliff jumping on the other side of the bay where some tall rocks stick out of deep water.

A complete 2023 guide to where to stay on Koh Tao Island, Thailand. Includes top accommodation picks on Sairee Beach, Mae Head, & more to suit all budgets.

Koh Tao, also known as Turtle Island, is located in the Gulf of Thailand and is one of my absolute favorite destinations in the world!

I lived on the island for several months as I completed my PADI Dive Master course and I often recommend it to many people all over the world as an incredible place to visit in Thailand for diving, jungle exploring, beach hopping, and meeting like-minded travelers.

In this detailed guide, I’ll provide a rundown of the best places and specific areas to stay on Koh Tao, with up-to-date recommendations on hotels, hostels, and affordable bungalows to help you plan your visit.

Best Areas to Stay on Koh Tao

1. Sairee Beach

Known as the longest beach on Koh Tao Sairee Beach has lots to offer. From blue calm waters to beach bars this area is a known tourist hub for travelers. Many hotels and resorts line this beach and boat tours to and from Ko Nang Yuan Island leave from here.

2. Mae Haad

This is the main port of entry onto Koh Tao. Mae Haad Pier brings ferry loads of people to the Island daily. If you're arriving late and need an easy first night, this is a great place to stay.

Another reason people choose this area is the convenience as there are loads of restaurants and bars close by and the sunset over the ocean at night is also a bonus.

3. Shark Bay

Shark bay also known as Thian Og Bay is an incredible bay. Known as one of the best snorkeling spots on the entire island, this area is quiet, scenic, and surrounded by beautiful tropical jungle.

It is even possible to spot a reef shark here during the early morning hours!

4. Chalok Baan Kao

Located on the south of the island Chalok Baan Kao is a small area with the third largest beach.

Many people stay in this area for its dive centers and small bungalow-styled accommodation options. Furthermore, Chalok is also a much quieter area which is great if you want to relax.

5. Tanote Bay

Tanote Bay is located on the eastern side of the Island just around the corner from Shark Bay.

It is known for its large rock formation that is used as a jumping platform into the ocean. Also, for snorkelers, the reef here is full of life and the swell is minimal with little wind– so it is a great place to explore the underwater world.

If you’re looking for an epic, local and secret sunset spot on Koh Tao, you’ve found the right place. Being a small tropical island, there are plenty of sunset spots where you can watch the sun disappear behind the horizon.

Some of the most popular include Sairee Baech or John Suwan Lookout. The truth is though, during peak season, most of the regular spots can get pretty crowded. However, in this guide I’ll be showing you the best, secret sunset viewpoint on Koh Tao that you probably won’t have heard of.

In my opinion, this is the best secret sunset spot on Koh Tao, let me show you why.

As you can see from the image above, you can get perfect views of Koh Nang Yuan as the sun sets on the horizon just beside it. This spot is also very quiet and requires a bit of local know-how to reach it, so it’s perfect for a chill sunset viewpoint.

How to get to the Secret Sunset Viewpoint on Koh Tao

In order to reach the secret sunset viewpoint on Koh Tao, you’ll need to head towards Dusit Bancha Resort. This resort is located towards the North-East corner of the island, directly in front of Koh Nang Yuan. The secret sunset spot is named Nang Yuan Terrace.

It shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to ride here if you’re coming from Sairee Beach. Those staying around Cha Lok can expect a 15 to 20-minute ride.

nang yuan terrace viewpoint map

Once you reach the resort, you’ll need to park your moped in the car-park at the top. Walk down into the resort until you reach a restaurant overlooking the water. Although I haven’t eaten here, it’s sure an epic spot to have dinner or a few beers. If like me, you like to stick to a crummy backpacker budget, simply walk around or through the restaurant until you reach a set of stairs that lead to the water.

Congratulations, you’ve reached the secret sunset spot on Koh Tao; Nang Yuan Terrace.

The Nang Yuan Terrace Sunset Viewpoint

Once you have reached the viewpoint, you can relax by the terrace or walk around on the rocks to the water’s edge. During the three months that I spent on Koh Tao, we would frequently visit this sunset spot after a day of scuba diving.

You will be rewarded with a panoramic view of Koh Nang Yuan and the island sun setting just beside it. You can also look over towards Sairee as you watch the nightlife spark up as the sunsets.

Getting to Nang Yuan Island from Nang Yuan Terrace

During the day time, you can also reach Nang Yuan Island from this spot. Although the boat drivers are catering to higher-end budget travelers who may be staying at the hotel, it’s the fastest spot to reach the double headed-island.

Long-tail boats frequent this spot picking up tourists. I haven’t tried to get to Koh Nang Yan from this spot, but depending on how busy they are, you might be able to negotiate a drop off price for the same cost as on Sairee Beach.

Alternatively, I do recommend the epic Nang Yuan day trip from Sairee Beach, which also includes a trip to Samui on the same day (speedboat).

Flying a Drone to Koh Nang Yuan From the Viewpoint

If you’ve brought a drone to Koh Tao, then you might be tempted to fly it over Koh Nang Yuan. In my opinion, the best place to fly it from is from this secret sunset viewpoint. This is because it is always generally quiet and you won’t be hassled for flying it.

With a distance of roughly 300 meters from the terrace, Koh Nang Yuan is within easy reach by drone. I shot the image below of Koh Nang Yuan during the day from this very spot.

The Abandoned Resort on Koh Tao is tucked away on the quiet Laem Thian Beach on the far Eastern Corner of Koh Tao.

Getting to the abandoned resort requires a hike through the jungle hills and cutting through small local island village communities. It takes roughly one hour to get there from Jitsin and there is a rough dirt path the entire way.

In this guide, I’ll give you tips for getting here and what to expect once you arrive.

drone shot in koh tao abandoned resort
The Abandoned Resort sits in a narrow stretch of coastline between two bays on the East Side of Koh Tao.

How to Get to the Abandoned Resort

The hike starts about 1km East from the general Sairee Beach area. Head up towards Smile Mart, passing Asia Divers on the way. You will need to head to Tarna Align Hotel where you can park your motorbike and start the hike.

Once you arrive at the hotel, you will need to walk up the hill, keeping the hotel on your left side. You will notice a dirt road that goes straight and heads into the jungle and up the hill. This is the road that you will need to follow the entire way until you get to the abandoned resort.

There are several misleading paths on both sides along the track. However, the best advice is to simply head straight and don't make any turns. After about an hour of walking over the mountain, you will notice the abandoned bungalows and buildings. You've made it to the abandoned resort on Koh Tao.

Exploring Koh tao's abandoned resort

A Brief History of the Abandoned Resort

Little is known as to why the resort has been abandoned. However, locals have suggested that prior to the closure it did not hold the best reputation. This, coupled with the sorry state of the dirt track leading to the resort, may have meant that it was just too difficult to keep it open.

Tripadvisor reviews seem to indicate that the Laem Thian Resort was abandoned some time around 2014. The location is very remote and it is difficult to understand how they were catering for tourists other than regular boat transfers.

What to do at the Abandoned Resort

No doubt as soon as you arrive at the abandoned resort you will be exploring the crumbling sea-view suites and the hanging jungle bungalows. You can check out the old kitchen and reception, which still boasts the Free Wifi sign.

Just remember to be respectful since although it is abandoned, it is still private property. If you know enough about Koh Tao then you know how important it is not to upset the wrong person.

Swimming and Snorkeling

Just opposite the abandoned resort, on the other side of the bay is a famous Koh Tao dive site. The bay has crystal clear waters with vibrant coral and marine life. You can even spot the occasional turtle in this bay so keep an eye out.

Cliff Jumping

Since the resort is situated on a thin stretch of land between two coves, you will find high rocks on either side. On the southern side of the bay, there are some high rocks and cliffs to jump off.

Spending the night

Although we didn't sleep here, the abandoned resort is a popular spot for backpackers to hang a hammock and camp. The building is in decent enough condition to provide shelter for a night's stay.

Just keep in mind that there is no phone reception and that the location is quite remote. Just remember to take your trash with you.

A quick guide to the best-known cliff jumping beach on Koh Tao, Tanote Bay. Find out how to get here, and what to expect once you arrive!

Tanote Bay on Koh Tao Island is famous for epic snorkeling and cliff jumping. If you’re looking for a spot a little out of the Sairee or Mae Head beat, don’t miss this epic beach.

In this quick guide, I’ll outline everything you need to know about visiting this bay, including how to get there and what to expect once you arrive.

Tanote Bay freediving

How to get to Tanote Bay

Getting to Tanote bay requires a moped. From Sairee or Mae Head, ride south towards the quieter village of Cha Lok. Keep your eyes peeled - just before you arrive, you will see a sign on the left that says "Tanote Bay".

This is the only road to the Tanote Bay and is the main route for those heading to the Eastern sites of the island. Follow signs and continue riding for approximately 10 minutes while you take in the breathtaking views of Koh Tao from the steep island hills.

If you reach a dead-end, don't worry. This is Tanote Bay resort. You can park your bike here and walk straight down to Tanote Bay Beach.

Epic Things to do in Tanote Bay Beach

There's a reason why this bay is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Crystal clear water, white sand, and a spectacular jungle backdrop.

There's also plenty of adventure to be had in Tanote Bay, Koh Tao. It's also ranked as one of the best beaches to visit on Koh Tao.

Cliff Jumping at Tanote Bay

Snorkeling at Tanote Bay

Make sure to bring your mask and snorkel. Tanote Bay is a great place to check out the famous Koh Tao reef and marine life. While there is decent snorkeling reefs in the entire bay, the best spot for snorkeling is around the main jump rock in the middle of the bay. Trust me, you won't miss it.

Simply swim out and explore the underwater world of Tanote Bay. You will find schooling fish, trigger-fish, anemone fish and the occasional turtle chilling in the bay.

Tanote Bay Koh Tao Snorkelling

Cliff Jumping in Tanote Bay Koh Tao

Probably the main reason adventure travelers make the trip to Tanote Bay is for the easily accessed cliff jumping rock. The rock is right in the middle of the bay.

You will need to swim approximately 20 meters in relatively shallow water and climb up onto the rock base. From there, you will notice a rope leading up to the top of the rock. This is secured firmly with a chain so it is safe to climb.

The jump itself is roughly 5 meters. Not a massive jump, but perfect for practicing your flips. The crystal clear water is also 10 meters deep so you don't have to stress about hitting anything. Just make sure that you jump on the south side of the rock (left side looking form the beach).

Since the water is so clear during the high season, Tanote Bay also makes a great spot to practice freediving. Just past the jump rock, you will notice some boat buoys. These have lines leading to the bottom. There is one line at 10m and one at 15m.

If you're using these lines to practice freediving, make sure to keep an eye out for longtail and dive boats that frequent the bay. It's also super important to always freedive with a buddy.

Where to Stay on Koh Tao – Accommodation Guide

A quick guide to finding one of my favorite freediving spots on Koh Tao Island.

Sick of Sairee and looking for a freediving location on Koh Tao? There are many spots to choose from. However, if you are a beginner freediver, talk to one of the many schools that operate out of Sairee Beach. They will rent you gear and teach you the basics of freediving.

For those of you who have done a bit of freediving before and looking to practice your apnea skills, you might want to check out this secret local spot. It’s a little off the beaten path, but you will be rewarded with a secluded cove with rope buoys and some of the clearest waters on Koh Tao.

Although I don’t consider myself a freediver by any standards, I do enjoy the thrill and challenge that the sport provides. I also always practice with a buddy. This secret free diving location on Koh Tao was shown to me by a friend.

Where to find the Secret Freediving Location on Koh Tao

To get to this epic freediving location, you'll need to take a moped to a resort named "Moonlight Magic View Bungalow". You can reach this resort towards Cha Lok, and taking the left turn towards Tanote Bay.

Follow the directions below until you reach the resort.

Walking down to the Freediving Spot

Once you reach the resort you will be greeted with some epic views of the east coast of Koh Tao Island. Make your way into the premises until you see a makeshift bamboo path heading down towards the water. Follow this path down until you reach the rocks.

The last part is seemingly impossible to get down. However, once you get to the large rock, turn around and you will see a bamboo staircase that leads into the cracks in the rock. Squeeze through and walk down to the water. Congratulations, you've reached the best freediving location on Koh Tao.

I told you this was secret.

The Best Freediving Location on Koh Tao

Although there are plenty of snorkeling and freediving locations on Koh Tao, this is one of the best for intermediate to advanced freedivers. A 20 M swim from the rocks leads out to water that is 30 M deep. There are several boat bouys with ropes that attach to the seafloor. The first one is at 15M, the second is at 20M and the third is at 30M.

The bay is also quite protected from Westerly winds. This makes it a calm spot with generally good visibility. You can also swim North along the coast where you will reach some submerged rocks with large groupers, schooling fish and barracuda.

Some Precautions

Freediving is a sport that requires precautions and vigilance. If you are a beginner, I would highly recommend contacting one of the many schools in Koh Tao. It is one of the cheapest places on earth to learn how to freedive.

Although not required to practice, I completed my PADI Advanced Open Water Freediving Course in Koh Tao. I was able to do this for free with one of my instructor friends on the island. This taught me the basics of safety, including the risk of shallow water blackout and how to spot your buddy.

Always freedive with a buddy

This secret freediving location on Koh Tao is pretty secluded. During the many times I went here to practice, I never saw any other people besides some Thai longtail boats. Make sure to only freedive with a buddy. There have been several people that have died on Koh Tao from shallow water blackouts.

Watch out for Longtail Boats

These waters around this freediving location are frequented by fishermen and dive boats. Make sure to keep an eye out for any boats coming through. Most of these Thai boat captains will drive right over you. It's your responsibility to move out of the way.

Underwater life at the Secret Freediving Spot

The great thing about freediving on Koh Tao is that there is plenty of things to see. You will see giant barracuda, schooling fish, groupers and anemome fish. It's also a good idea to keep an eye out for any turtles that might be cruising by. Although I didn't see any turtles when I was freediving in this spot, I'm sure that there are plenty that swim by from time to time.

Clean up Koh Tao

Whenever you go on an adventure or step into the ocean, make sure to never leave any trash. If you're interested in joining a cleanup movement and making a difference, why not Take 3 for the Sea? Just pick up any plastic, net or waste you see in or around the water and dispose of it.

Not only does this keep Koh Tao looking clean, but it also saves local marine populations and reef.

Say Thanks - Grab a Beer at Moonlight

After a long afternoon of freediving, make sure to thank the guys at Moonlight Resort for letting you use their staircase down to the beach. They are nice guys and won't ask for money to access this epic freediving location on Koh Tao. However, they do appreciate you buying a beer or water from them to say thank you.

A quick guide on where to snorkel with Reef Sharks on Koh Tao! Remember to respect wildlife and be responsible!

If you’re in Koh Tao then you are already aware of the epic underwater world that surrounds the island. One specific sea creature that seems a little harder to catch a glimpse of is the Black Tip Reef Shark.

Although these guys sometimes visit the popular dive sites around the island, they can be regularly spotted if you know when and where to look. Read on to find out where you can swim with sharks in Koh Tao.

Where are the Black Tip Reef Sharks on Koh Tao?

Black Tip Reef Sharks usually frequent shallow sandy flats, anywhere from under 1m to 10m in Shark Bay, also known as Haad Tien Beach. Shark Bay is located in the South end of Koh Tao island, just past Chalok.

The easiest way to get there is to leave your bike at Taatoh Seaview Resort and walk down the windy cliff walkways until you get to the water.

Once you have reached the bottom, simply swim out to the shallows and keep an eye out for that black fin! Some of the juvenile sharks in Koh Tao are very small, only around 60cm long! However, keep watch because we frequently saw some up to 1.5m long, sometimes up to four at a time circling us.

Although these sharks can be found everywhere in the bay, we found that we were more likely to spot them in the area pictured below.

Go Early

Many people that I spoke to were positive that there were no sharks in Koh Tao, this is definitely not true. You can see sharks in Koh Tao daily, but it is important to go early in the morning between 6.30AM and 9.30AM. It seems that the sharks only ever visit the bay around this time of the morning, which means an early wake up if you really want to catch them!

Keep an Eye Out for Turtles

Turtle Island isn’t the sanctuary for turtles like it used to be. Many have migrated to other smaller nearby islands to escape the scuba crowds. However, it is still very common to find large sleeping or cruising turtles in the quite sanctuary of Shark Bay. Once the sharks have headed off for the day, swim out a little deeper and keep an eye out for the chilled dudes. Remember to give them some space and let them enjoy the relative quietness of this hidden gem.
