After going hot air ballooning in Cairns, Australia, and again in Luxor, Egypt, I thought the process was pretty straightforward.

However, if you've spent a bit of time traveling through Turkey, you'll likely realize that things don't operate the same as in your home country. While things in Turkey can be a little difficult to organize, this is only compounded ten-fold by the fact that the sunrise Cappadocia balloons are the most famous and popular travel experience in the country!

That's why, after dealing with all of the hassles myself, I've outlined 11 essential things you need to know BEFORE booking your Cappadocia hot air balloon ride!

1. Hot Air Balloons in Cappadocia Sell Out Every Day

By far, the most important thing you need to know is that you CAN NOT leave securing your balloon to the last minute. In fact, I'd recommend booking at least 1-2 weeks in advance, as a bare minimum.

While there are 100s of hot-air balloons lifting off from Cappadocia daily, people fly here from all over the world to have this experience. And, when flights get canceled due to bad weather, balloon tour companies scramble to reschedule their clients' flights for the following day.

As you could imagine, this issue can cascade, especially if cancellations occur over many consecutive days.

Luckily, it's possible to avoid the chaos of bartering with touts in Cappadocia or Istanbul by booking your balloon online well in advance. I highly recommend booking your balloon tour with Get Your Guide on the first morning to avoid any potential issues in the event of cancelation!

2. Cappadocia Balloons Can be Cancelled

Yes, I've mentioned this already. However, being aware of cancellations is probably the most important thing to know planning the unforgettable experience of a Cappadocia your hot air balloon ride.

Unlike commercial airlines, hot air balloons are a very primitive form of aviation. In the event of bad weather, i.e strong winds or a particularly warm morning, balloons will not fly. That's because even experienced pilots with years of expertise cannot control the flight path in unpredictable winds. And the hot air inside the balloons won't lift the balloon basket if the ambient temperature is warmer.

When this happens, your tour operator will likely try to squeeze you onto a flight for the next day.

I've heard of travelers losing their money after booking Cappadocia balloon tours with a dodgy travel agent, so it's a good idea to ensure you book with a reputable source like Get Your Guide who organizes the flight with Royal Balloons, Discover Balloons, and Voyager Balloons.

These tours also include hotel pickup and a light breakfast, so you'll likely be informed of cancellations well in advance.

Unfortunately, there's usually no way to tell whether balloons will fly or not until the early morning. While you can gauge wind speeds on weather forecast apps, it's this official government website that will indicate whether it is safe to fly, and the Turkish Civil Aviation Authority bases the call off this information. As you can see, there are either red flags or green flags, indicating whether or not hot air balloon pilots can launch in each area of Cappadocia.

3. You'll Want to Stay at Least a Few Days in Cappadocia

Look, my goal isn't to stress you out or change your travel itinerary.

But, I want to be honest. It's a good idea to spend at least a few days in Cappadocia. This is not just so that you can ensure you'll get a clear weather window for a hot air balloon ride, but also because there is so much to see and do in this beautiful region.

Also, be prepared for a change of plans. The last thing you want is a rigid itinerary since you'll only find out about cancelations in the early morning of your flight.

I would recommend that everybody spends at least 2-3 days in Cappadocia. This will result in enough time for a hot air balloon experience, see the balloons from the ground (more info below), and explore other highlights like the Göreme Open Air Museum, Uçhisar Castle, and the Derinkuyu Underground City.

4. The Cost of Hot Air Ballooning in Cappadocia Changes All the Time

Unfortunately, Turkey is undergoing an urgent inflation crisis. This means that the Turkish Lira is losing value against foreign currencies like US Dollars and Euros– and fast!

The result is that the prices for hot air balloon rides change almost every week. The most reputable balloon companies have now started offering their flights in USD and EURO for stability.

Furthermore, prices also change based on the season. This year, I was told that the price would change from $175 USD to $250 USD during the week I was in Cappadocia due to us entering a busier season.

Luckily, the Turkish Government has started cracking down on balloon tour operators in Cappadocia to avoid any serious price fixing. They've also made it nearly impossible to register for a new balloon license in the region, ensuring that all hot air balloon companies have years of experience.

5. There is a "Black Market" For Hot Air Balloon Tickets

The combination of ticket scarcity and thousands of tourists leaving their booking to the last minute has resulted in a huge black market for balloon tickets.

While the tourism industry is trying to combat this, the sad truth is that many people buy up tickets, knowing they will sell out, and try to flip onto tourists 2-5 times as much as they paid for them.

Of course, since this is such a unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience, a large percentage of travelers are willing to fork out close to $1000 for a last-minute ticket.

I recommend avoiding this like the plague, as scams are rampant, especially on online forums like Facebook.

6. Balloon Flight Times Are at Least One Hour in Duration

Another thing to note is that this incredible experience lasts for an entire hour– at a minimum! Not all tour companies plan the same flight path. Most of the cheaper basic hot air balloon tours usually float up to the highest point of around 3,000 feet (915 meters), then descend over one of the many Cappadocia valleys.

However, if you're looking to extend the flight time and get a unique experience, it's also possible to book a Royal King Flight with Royal Balloon. This is a longer-duration flight of around 75 minutes and also includes a luxury shuttle transfer and an all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast.

7. Flight Paths Change Depending on Wind Direction

Next, it's good to know that flight paths are also heavily dependent on wind direction and speed. While this isn't something you really need to worry about as a balloon basket passenger, you should be aware of the launch site if you want to head there to take photos.

The main flight paths in Cappadocia are over its beautiful valleys, including Rose Valley, Red Valley, and Love Valley. This is great as you'll get a very unique view of the Cappadocia fairy chimneys, volcanic rock formations, and cave dwellings.

Balloons also fly over Göreme town and Uçhisar– the two most popular tourist towns in Cappadocia.

8. Over 100 Balloons Fly in Cappadocia Every Morning

If you even google the term "hot air balloon", the majority of articles and images that pop up will be from Cappadocia. That's because this region is the world's most famous ballooning destination, and host of the annual Hot Air Balloon Festival.

As you can expect, the main roads and dirt streets are chaotic in the early mornings with wedding photographers, ground crew, and tourists all trying to get out to the launch sites, where over 100 hot air balloons depart every day.

From the sky, sharing golden hour with 99 other hot air balloons as you float over the Mars-like landscape of Cappadocia is a truly magical experience and a reason why this region is so popular with tourists from all over the world.

9. Hot Air Balloon Tours Fly in Summer & Winter

Cappadocia balloons fly year-round, from its hot and dry summer months to the icy, snowy winter months.

The best time to visit Cappadocia for a hot air balloon flight is generally between March and June or September and November. This is considered the shoulder season and usually results in calm weather with few balloon cancellations.

The peak season for travel in Turkey is June to August. During this time, crowds are very common, and getting a ticket can be tricky if you don't book in advance.

During the winter months (November to February), the weather in Cappadocia is bitterly cold. However, this could be one of the most beautiful times to fly balloons since the landscape is often covered in a blanket of snow! Additionally, fewer tourists visit during these months, so getting on a balloon is easier and likely cheaper.

10. Flying in a Hot Air Balloon is Very Safe in Turkey

If this is the first time you're considering a hot air balloon ride, let me convince you that it is absolutely not as scary as it seems.

Unlike commercial airline flights, helicopters, or scenic flights, hot air balloons are very calming. I know that sounds weird considering you'll be hovering three thousand feet above the ground. However, since balloons float with the atmosphere, they are not propelled against any forces, resulting in a strangle calm feeling of anti-gravity.

Furthermore, flying in a balloon basket is actually the safest form of aviation. The Turkish Civil Aviation Authority also keeps a close eye on balloon activity to ensure safety.

To put it frankly, you're actually much more likely to be injured in the shuttle bus to the launch site than in a Cappadocia balloon ride!

11. There Are Many Hot Air Balloon Viewpoints From The Ground

Want to witness the amazing scene of a hundred floating balloons over Cappadocia's valleys? I highly recommend heading over to one of the many viewpoints around Göreme and Uçhisar to see the balloons from the ground as well.

I spent every morning in Cappadocia visiting different balloon vantage points. My favorites are:

• Love Valley - a magical landscape with 100-feet tall phallic rock formations
• Pigeon Valley - one of the most beautiful valleys in Cappadocia famous for its pigeon houses
• Top of Uçhisar Castle - the highest point in the region and a great spot to view the sunrise balloons
• Lover's Hill - an awesome sunset and sunrise viewpoint at the top of Göreme town

I recommend asking your hotel, hot air balloon company, or a local where they think the flight path will be before heading to any particular viewpoint as this will change day to day.

The Balloon Launch Site

Prepare for an early start! Your driver will pick you up from your hotel well before sunrise and take you to the launch site. Here, you'll likely be treated to a light breakfast while the ground crew prepares your balloon.

Photographers will likely skip breakfast and take the opportunity to photograph the firing up of hundreds of balloons across the landscape instead. In my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful sights and very unique to Cappadocia due to the sheer volume of balloons.

LIft-Off

Almost as soon as the balloon rises off the ground, you'll board the basket along with the 10-20 other tourists who will be sharing the ride with you. Yes, it can get a little tight inside the balloon basket, but you'll likely forget about all of that as soon as you float off the ground.

On standard flights, your balloon pilot usually likes to head straight up to the highest point, especially if you've booked a 1-hour hot air balloon ride.

This is a great opportunity to take some magical photos of the balloons inflating at ground level.

Floating over the valleys of Cappadocia

Floating over Cappadocia in a hot air balloon is by far one of the best ways to witness this amazing landscape. How to Get to Pigeon valley

The start of Pigeon Valley is located within walking distance of Uçhisar town, famous for the Uçhisar Castle, a natural castle that is the highest point in the region.

From here, there are long but easy and flat hiking trails running all the way up and past Göreme.

The easiest way to get to the valley is to rent a car or ATV, or simply use public transport (one of the buses or taxi) to Uçhisar and walk to the pin above.

However, if you're looking to get to the Pigeon Valley viewpoint, which is a small hill overlooking Uchisar, and the many pigeon houses in the valley, you'll want to skip to the next section.

This is just off the main road and will require a private car to get to.

What to Expect at Pigeon Valley Cappadocia

Pigeon Valley is a long, gently sloping canyon running between the main tourist towns of Goreme and Uchisar. It is named after the many pigeon houses which are carved into the soft rock of the adjacent hills.

Yes, you'll find many cave dwellings and pigeon houses all over Cappadocia. However, this valley is famous for having the most!

Pigeon Valley Viewpoint

The Pigeon Valley viewpoint is a small hillside pullover point on the main road running just north of Goreme. The viewpoint is situated at the very top of the valley, allowing for a beautiful panoramic view directly south towards Uchisar.

Looking down, you'll see beautiful patterns of volcanic rock, forming patterns of various colors after years of erosions since ancient times. There are also some small rock pillars and of course, many pigeon houses dotting the hillsides.

One of the interesting tourist attractions you'll discover at the Pigeon Valley viewpoint is the beautiful Evil Eye Tree. There are several of these across the Cappadocia region, symbolizing good luck. Apparently, if you purchase an Evil Eye pendant from the local people working at the souvenir shop and hang it on the tree, you'll get a wish– a good marketing ploy if I ever saw one!

About the Pigeon Houses of Cappadocia

The small bird cave dwellings you'll see carved into the rockface all over the valley were used for breeding and housing domestic pigeons for centuries.

Even since ancient times, the local people of the Cappadocia region have used pigeons for food and fertilizer to help grow food in the barren, volcanic soil.

Hiking in Pigeon Valley (Göreme to Uchisar Castle)

The best way to experience the beautiful valleys and incredible views of Cappadocia is to hike through the valley floor.

Luckily, the Pigeon Valley hike is one of the most popular hiking trails in the region.

The entire length is roughly 6 kilometers (3.7 miles). That's if you choose to walk all the way from Uchisar to Goreme. However, you can also do short in-and-out hikes from either town.

If you're planning to walk the entire canyon, I recommend starting the route in Uchisar. This means it'll be a mostly downhill and easy walk.

Along the way, you'll pass through rock-hewn Christian churches and many small, abandoned cave homes that you are free to explore. While there aren't as many giant rock pillars (fairy chimneys of Cappadocia), you'll still find some beautiful colored rock formations on the hillside slopes.

Alternatively, adventurous travelers can explore the Pigeon Valley on a horse ride, or on the popular Jeep Safari for a great time and even more impressive views!

Where to Stay in Cappadocia

Where is Love Valley in Cappadocia

Love Valley (also called Honey Valley, Bagildere Valley, or the Valley of Lovers) is located in the heart of the Cappadocia region of Turkey near the small town of Göreme, famous for the Göreme open-air museum.

What to Expect at the Cappadocia Love Valley

With the simple logistics out of the way, let's dive into what you might expect out of a visit to Love Valley in Cappadocia. The hill on the side of the valley is one of the best panoramic viewpoints, along with more of Cappadocia's Valleys like Rose Valley, White Valley, Red Valley, and Pigeon Valley.

These viewpoints are all free, and there is no entry fee to access Love Valley. However, there is a small cafe and souvenir shop at the viewpoint.

Tip: the landscapes on the high plateau of Cappadocia differ widely, from cold, snowy winters to hot dry summers with very little rainfall.

The Love Valley Sunrise Viewpoint

While certainly a unique landscape, the biggest draw to Love Valley isn't the super-sized slongs dominating the landscape, but its location for viewing and taking photos of the daily hot air balloons flying over during sunrise.

This is a popular spot for photographers, since the balloons fly directly above the unique rock formations, resulting in some absolutely magical photo opportunities. The Google Map pin above will take you directly to the large, dirt parking lot. From here, just walk around the hillside and wait for the balloons!

However, due to the spectacular landscape, you'll undeniably be greeted by hordes of tourists who flock here every day. The viewpoint is also popular with young people and an ideal place for marriage proposals.

To avoid the crowds and get at least a bit of privacy (and better photos), I recommend arriving at the panoramic viewpoint early and walking all the way down to the end of the small hill edging the valley.

Tip: The wind must be blowing in the right direction for balloons to fly over Love Valley. Otherwise, another great viewpoint is the sunset hill at Göreme town. It's a good idea to ask your hotel or a local, who usually have a good idea about the destination.

Love Valley Hike

Of course, the Love Valley isn't just about its sunrise viewpoint! Heading down to the valley floor also provides some great hiking opportunities, with unique vantage points of the fairy chimneys, mushroom rocks, or giant penises– whatever you want to call them.

A great option is to begin your hike at Göreme and walk all the way to Uchisar to see the cave dwellings and Uchisar castle. This hike is quite easy, mostly flat, and only takes just over an hour to complete.

The starting point is the lower, eastern trail leading from north of Göreme through Love Valley towards Uchisar. The GPS coordinates for the trailhead are: (38°39'46.0"N 34°49'50.3"E), which will lead you to the trail on the side of the main road.

Taking this route, you'll walk directly beneath the viewpoint and right next to the fascinating fairy chimney rock formations that can reach heights of 100 ft (30m)! There landscape is also dotted with fruit trees and small bushes.

On the way back, you can take public transport, either one of the buses shuttling every 30 minutes, or a taxi.

How did Love Valley Form?

The extraordinary landscape of Cappadocia is a result of a unique erosion process.

Over 10 million years ago, the 3916 m high Erciyes Dagś volcano erupted, covering the whole region in thick layers of volcanic mountains made from rock and lava. Over time, these volcanic layers eroded, causing the softer rock to crumble and leaving behind tall pillars of a harder material.

If you look closely at the penis-shaped rocks, you'll notice that even these are made of different layers. The beautiful white sand covering many of the valleys (really, they're canyons aren't they), is in fact volcanic ash left over from this eruption.

Extending to a depth of approximately 85 meters (279 feet), the Cappadocia underground city of Derinkuyu is a wildly fascinating cave city complete with stables for domestic animals, graves, communal kitchens, sleeping dormitories, storage rooms, a winery, and even a religious school.

These underground dwellings feature ingenious ventilation systems allowing up to 20,000 people to live beneath the earth’s surface with their livestock, supplies, and food reserves.

After exploring and photographing this fascinating ancient underground city in Turkey, I’ve compiled this comprehensive resource for other travelers and those interested in visiting the city themselves.

The Ancient Underground City of Derinkuyu: A Quick History

While nobody can be sure, the official archeological estimates currently suggest that either the Hittites or the early Phrygians (an ancient Indo-European speaking people) first began carving the soft volcanic rock to form the early underground city.

How old is the Underground City?

This dating varies wildly, depending on which expert you listen to. If it were the Hitties, then it could have been constructed as early as 1000 BCE, while if it were the Phrygians, the 8th century BCE. The Turkish Department of Culture tends to favor the latter, with their estimate making Derinkuyu almost 3,000 years old.

However, it's important to note that this dating estimate is solely based on stories from when populations began living here, with no carbon dating for this date or historical records regarding its actual construction. Therefore, it's entirely possible that this city could be much, much older and that the Hittites and Phrygians were simply one of many civilizations to have used it.

The Official & Disputed History of Derinkuyu

While the initial motives for building this city are mostly unknown, the best-guess official story is that the city's expanders, the early Christians, continued to dig and develop the city to avoid Roman persecution.

However, this view also believes that it wasn't until the Byzantine era that these now Christian natives constructed the city to its full form (convenient for Christians). They believe that the city now could accommodate 20,000 people, their livestock, food supplies, and resources, providing a safe settlement from the Muslim Arabs during the Arab-Byzantine wars of 780-1180 AD.

What is undisputed is that Derinkuyu, along with the other underground cities of Cappadocia, continued to be used by regional inhabitants for centuries, including the period of Mongolian incursion (14th century), and as a Christian refuge during early Ottoman Empire rule.

However, something that mainstream archeology seems to completely ignore is that there was no evidence of above-ground settlement in Derinkuyu until –adding to the mystery of the Derinkuyu underground city

Why Were Derinkuyu, Kaymankli, & the other Cappadocia Underground Cities Built?

The truth is that nobody can be certain about why the underground cities of Derinkuyu were constructed because there simply is no evidence that can tell us for sure. However, archaeologists and historians can make best guesses.

They claim that in order to understand the motives behind the construction of an underground mega city such as Derinkuyu, it's crucial to look at its location. The region of Cappadocia serves as a fundamental historical crossroad between two worlds; Europe and Asia.

As a result, the peaceful farming inhabitants were often the target of ransacking by armies making their way from both continents. While the open plains and rolling hills didn't provide many shelters or cover from invading armies, the soft, volcanic soil of Cappadocia allowed for easy excavation to dig a safe haven hiding place.

The Modern Discovery of Turkey's Underground City

It wasn't until the 1960s that a local Turkish man made the first modern discovery of Derinkuyu. From the ground level, no observer could speculate that an 18-story mega-city existed beneath the ground.

However, this man, after digging in his own basement, stumbled upon a large pit leading to a huge gallery. The resulting excavation revealed the true scale of this lucky man's discovery– a huge underground city connected via a complex labyrinth of tunnels spanning nearly 7,000 square feet.

Did you know? There are actually dozens of underground cities in Cappadocia with as many as 36 cities discovered so far. The most recently discovered is approximately 80 kilometers from Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı and could potentially be the largest underground city yet.

Where is Turkey's Underground City?

The Derinkuyu underground city is located in the Turkish town of Derinkuyu. This settlement lies within the Nevşehir Province in the Cappadocia region of Central Anatolia.

This is approximately 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the popular Cappadocia tourist village of Göreme.

Tourists can access the underground city through a government-operated entrance area within the town.

How to Get to Derinkuyu Underground City

For travelers in Turkey, there are three primary ways to get to the Derinkuyu underground city in Cappadocia. These include

Below I'll go into more detail about each option, with suggestions to make your visit easier (and cheaper).

1. Visit Turkey's Underground City On A Travel Tour

Turkey is a huge country where you'll discover many Roman-era ancient sites, beautiful landscapes, rich cultural hubs, and incredible hospitality.

Driving a car in this region of Turkey is quite manageable, and much easier than in Istanbul. For rental cars in Turkey, I highly recommend comparing prices in advance on DiscoverCars. Note, you will need to drive along the Nevşehir Niğde Yolu highway to reach Derinkuyu. Therefore, taking a scooter or ATV here is not possible.

What to Expect When Visiting Turkey's Underground City of Derinkuyu

Let me tell you, reading about, and seeing photos of the Derinkuyu underground complex is incomparable to actually seeing it yourself. So, if you find yourself in Turkey, I highly recommend making a stop at this incredible ancient site a top priority!

Below, I'll do my best to provide a summary of what to expect at the most famous ancient underground city of Turkey by walking you through some of the main highlights and features of the cave settlement.

Opening times: 8 am to 7 pm during summer, and 8 am to 5 pm in winter

Derinkuyu Underground City Entrance Fee

Upon arriving at the underground city entrance, international visitors will need to pay the Derinkuyu Underground City entrance fee of 65 Turkish Lira. Due to crippling inflation, this price changes often but is quite cheap for such an incredible site.

This site has been open to tourist visitors since 1969 and was added to the World Heritage List in 1985. However, archaeologists have blocked off the majority of the rooms, channels, and hallways. The result is only 10% of the underground city accessible to visitors.

Don't worry though, this 10% is still A LOT to explore, and will likely take at least a couple of hours.

After paying your fee, you'll walk through some turn styles and begin your descent down a very narrow and near-vertical staircase.

Underground Barns for Domesticated Animals

The first chamber near the entrance is one of the most fascinating. Early inhabitants used this huge gallery as stables and housed their goats, horses, cows, chickens, and other domesticated animals and livestock here.

Also, if you look closely at the rocks, you'll see large loopholes carved into the pillars. This was intentional, and most likely served as attachment points for ropes to tie animals.

From a functional point of view, keeping livestock at the top of the city was a smart move, as it meant no animal waste made its way down to the living quarters.

Large Rolling Stone Doors

Walking through the narrow hallways and tunnels on the upper levels, keep an eye out for the huge, wheel-style rolling doors. The city inhabitants used leverage to roll these huge, heavy doors across the tunnels to seal off invaders from the outside world.

This, combined with the low ceilings served as a primary defense mechanism to ensure invaders couldn't storm through the city.

Derinkuyu Church (Chapel)

One of the largest galleries in the Derinkuyu underground city is in fact a Christian church. If you look closely, you'll see that this large hall and meeting room splits off into tunnels forming a cross leading to a small chapel or Cruciform church.

There's also a punishment pillar in the middle of this chamber. As you could imagine, a city housing 20,000 people needed an order of discipline. Rulers or leaders would use to whip those who committed misdeeds.

Underground Storage Rooms

While many of the tunnels and rooms are closed off to the public, you'll likely notice dozens of large, empty rooms. Many of these served to store the city's food, produce, tools, olive oil presses, and other work and life necessities.

The Underground City Water Supply

For a city built thousands of years ago, it sure seems that these ancient populations had things figured out. On the lower floors of Derinkuyu, you will discover water wells connected to huge underground reservoirs. This allowed 20,000 people access to a pure water source in an underground city! However, these reservoirs are now dry.

Lower Floors and Deep Ventilation Shafts

Making your way down to the lower floors, you'll likely come across the primary air shafts or ventilation shafts. These run directly up towards the surface and are ingeniously designed to provide fresh flowing air in one shaft while circulating foul air through the other.

Early Christian School

One of the most unique features of Derinkuyu which historians and archaeologists have not discovered in other Cappadocia underground cities is a wide, vaulted ceiling religious school. This was constructed by early Christians and its presence indicates that these subterranean settlers would live underground for quite some time.

Wine Cellar

Yes, there's even a wine cellar at Derinkuyu! You'll find this huge room near the school. It contains a large basin where early winemakers would crush grapes and store wine.

It's no secret that Turkey is a big country. So, if you're looking to squeeze in as much sightseeing as possible in a short timeframe, this country is a place I'd highly recommend anyone to simply book an organized tour.

When comparing tours, I recommend reading reviews closely and outlining all of the attractions you'd like to visit. The Turkish hot springs at Pamukkale are often a highlight attraction but many tour companies skip them due to the long distance from Istanbul.

The tour I went on was the Turkey by Gulet tour with Travel Talk. This tour included a 12-day program by land (comfortable airconditioned coaches), and 3 out of those days sailing on a Turkish Gulet.

By car: while Istanbul roads can get a little chaotic, driving in the rest of Turkey is very manageable and convenient. The drive from Istanbul to Pamukkale takes approximately 7 hours and covers a total distance of 575 kilometers (357 miles).

What to Expect at the Pamukkale Thermal Pools

Now that you know exactly how to get to the Pamukkale thermal pools in Turkey, let's dive into what to expect once you arrive!

Entrance & Fees & Opening times at Pamukkale

Pamukkale has three different entrances:

• Pamukkale town entrance - walking up from the small Pamukkale town (20 minutes to the plateau)
• North entrance - near the Necropolis and furthest entrance from the pools
• South entrance: closest gate to the pools where most tour groups stop as there is a large parking space.

Due to crippling inflation in Turkey, entrance fees are constantly changing. The most current fee for the Pamukkale entrance tickets as of August 2022 is 200 Turkish Lira.

Pamukkale is open every day starting at 6:30 am from the south gate and 8:00 am from the others. Below are the closing times reflective of the seasons.

• 1 March - 31 May: closes 8:00 pm
• 1 June - 30t September: closes 8:30 pm
• 1 October - 31 October: closes 8:00 pm
• 1 November - 28 February: closes 6:00 pm

Travel tip: There is a security metal detector screening at the Pamukkale entrances. These guards will also check your bags, so ensure you are not bringing a drone as you may be refused entry.

Exploring the Pamukkale Terraces (Cotton Castle Travertines)

As you make your way from the southern entrance, you can follow the sealed path across the plateau toward the famous pools.

Along the way, you'll see some pretty amazing viewpoints of the Pamukkale travertines, also known as the Cotton Castle. These viewpoints look over areas where tourists are not permitted to step.

The main pool access is directly opposite a small cafe/souvenir shop and is clearly marked with signs.

The accessible thermal pool area follows a gently declining slope, with several white travertines and mineral pools ranging from pure snow-white to a bright blue water color.

If you're visiting during peak season in the middle of the day, expect Pamukkale to be very crowded. As a result, you'll want to continue down to the lower pools, where you'll often find fewer people.

Swimming in the Turkey Hot Springs

Yes, of course, you can swim at the Pamukkale pools! The mineral-rich calcium carbonate deposits contain many beneficial minerals that are great for your skin and will even clean your silver jewelry!

In total, there are 17 thermal springs feeding the pools. The temperatures range from 35 degrees Celcius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) to almost 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit). However, due to a slow decline in natural water flow, the government has installed pumps that manually replenish the pools and create a stream of flowing water in the channels near the edge of the travertines. This ensures that the pools accessible to tourists are always safe for swimming.

The pools at Cotton Castle aren't very deep, at roughly knee height in most pools.

Turkey Hot Springs: Pamukkale is Turkey's most famous thermal spring. The geothermal waters in this region are a natural wonder recognized by the Romans thousands of years ago. Today, many believe that the tradition of Turkish baths stems from this ancient civilization.

The Antique Pool (Cleopatra's Pool)

Another exciting attraction worth visiting at the Pamukkale thermal pools is Cleopatra's Pool, also commonly known as Cleopatra's Antique Pool.

This ancient pool is rumored to be a gift made from Marc Antony to Cleopatra, with several columns and structures once standing tall from the warm, flowing waters. Unfortunately, a massive earthquake during the 7th century brought these once marvelous structures, as well as many of the ancient ruins of Hierapolis down to the ground.

However, the pool has been rebuilt and it's now possible to swim in this ancient pool.

There's an extra cost to visit this pool of approximately 30 Turkish Lira (changes constantly). You'll find it just nearby the travertines as you pass the Pamukalle museums.

Visiting The Hierapolis Ancient City at Pamukkale

The warm flowing water and picturesque white terraces aren't the only attraction at Pamukkale. For fans of ancient, particularly Roman, history, you absolutely have to explore the many historical attractions on offer at the ancient spa city of Hierapolis.

The Hierapolis Museum

Immediately opposite the travertine springs is the small Hierapolis Archaeology museum housed in the ancient Roman baths. Entrance is included in the overall entrance fee, with several rooms to wander through.

Some of the most interesting are the detailed Roman sarcophagi and the surviving pillars and statues.

Exploring The Holy City's Ruins

Historians suggest that Hierapolis was at its peak, a thriving metropolis housing over 100,000 people. As you might expect, exploring the ruins of the city can take quite a while.

However, if you're short on time, I suggest checking out the following historical sites.

• Theatre - a must (more info below)
• Main street - 1,500 meter long street with a colossal gate at the end (Frontinus Gate)
• Hierapolis Necropolis - is among the best-preserved necropolis in Turkey with 1,200 limestone and marble tombs
• Temple of Apollo - small Hellenistic temple from the 3rd century AD dedicated to the principal deity of the city
• Nymphaeum - located near the Apollo Temple, a 2nd-century fountain

The Main Attraction: The Hierapolis Theater

Due to tectonic movements in this region of modern-day Turkey, Hieropalis suffered a lot of seismic damage over the ages. While many of the historical sites and ancient columns have collapsed, the Hieropalis theatre has been maintained and rebuilt over the ages.

This theatre is one of the most impressive in the country and features forty-five rows of seats separated by two diazomata. Historians believe that it could accommodate approximately 15,000 people!

• Bare feet - you must walk without shoes at the thermal pools. You can leave your shoes near the access point to the travertines.
