Discover one of the most beautiful natural swimming spots in Malta at St Peter’s Pool. Complete guide including how to get here, what to expect, and photos to inspire your visit.

It’s no secret that Malta is well-regarded for its amazing coastal landscapes and crystal clear water swimming areas.

One of the absolute best is St Peter’s Pool, a natural round pool forming a perfect pool with crystal clear blue-green waters. This site is great for swimming, relaxing, and cliff jumping, so you won’t want to miss it when exploring southern Malta!

About St Peter's Pool in Malta

St Peter's Pool is a beautiful natural swimming pool formed by eroded limestone. It's famous in Malta due to the crystal clear water. On a clear, sunny day, the sun reflects off the white bottom to form a beautiful blue glow in the pool.

Most people make it here to cool off and swim in the pool. Additionally, it's quite deep, making it a great place for cliff jumping too.

Where is St Peter's Pool?

St. Peter's Pool is located close to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, near the tip of Delimara Point on the southeast coast of Malta.

While this is quite a remote location for travelers staying in tourist areas like Valletta, Sliema, or Mellieha, it makes sense to visit this iconic natural limestone pool on a day trip to the nearby villages of Marsaxlokk, Marsaskala, or Birżebbuġa.

Below I've pinned the exact location of St Peter's Pool to help you find it.

How to get to St Peter's Pool

There are three ways to reach St Peter's Pool in Malta.

The first option is to drive to a small parking spot near the rock pool along Delimara Point. This parking spot is pinned as "Parking for St Peter's Pool". The road leading to this point is quite narrow and winding. Also, once you get down to the carpark, the road is a little rough.

The second option is to take a jet ski tour (from nearby St Thomas bay) or one of the boat trips to St Peter's Pool. You'll find signs offering these trips in Marsaxlokk or you could book the jet ski adventure online in advance.

The third option is via public transport, stopping at the bus stop called Abdosir and walking to the pool. Below are the available routes:

  • From Valletta or Floriana: route 81
  • Airport: route 119

Car Rentals in Malta

The best way to experience both Malta and Gozo islands is to rent your own car! I recommend booking well in advance using price comparison sites like DiscoverCars if traveling in the busy summer season.

Arriving at The Pools

Once you arrive at the car park off the main road, you'll need to walk down a short set of stone stairs carved into the cliff.

From here, you'll see plenty of space along the flat rocks around the pool to lay down a towel and relax.

What to Expect at St Peter's Natural Swimming Pool

As soon as you arrive at St Peters Pool, you'll understand what all the hype is about.

The water here is crystal clear, with a bright azure glow offering excellent swimming and snorkeling opportunities. There's a ladder leading into the water, which means getting in and out is a breeze. Further out in the cove, you'll also find a rope marking the safe swimming area.

Furthermore, the flat rocks around the pool serve as the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the Mediterranean summer sun.

Swimming In The Pool

As I'm sure you know, the weather during the dry summer months of May to August gets quite hot! The water temperature in the pool usually exceeds 20-22 degrees celsius during this time, which makes for a comfortable swim.

Just remember that the pool is quite deep. Therefore, you'll need to watch small children.

Cliff Jumping

St. Peter's Pool jump height: around 4 meters

The depth in St Peter's Pool is easily deep enough to jump from the high rocks at the rounded limestone edge. The highest jump is around 4 meters, which isn't massive, but a fun jump nonetheless.

Remember when cliff jumping to always do a depth check first.

Unique Limestone Rock Formations Behind the Pool

Around the cliff face to the south, (left if looking out to the sea) travelers will find another worthwhile natural attraction. This area is a wide, flat section with some interesting rock formations and weathered limestone boulders.

This is a great photography location, especially during sunrise!

An inspiring travel guide featuring 70+ best things to do in Malta. Find out why the beautiful Maltese Islands of Gozo, Comino, and Malta are among the best travel destinations in Europe.

Although the Maltese archipelago is one of the smallest countries in the Mediterranean Sea, the islands are packed with adventure!

Picture crystal clear water lagoons, epic sea caves, rich sandy beaches and rocky coves, dramatic cliffs, and world-class scuba diving and snorkeling. Malta is truly an adventure playground.

After spending several weeks exploring and photographing every inch of this incredible island nation, I’ve written this Malta travel guide. Here, I cover all of the best activities, must-see places to visit, and some off-the-beaten-path hidden gems in Malta.

My goal is to share with you my personal experience and photography of these beautiful islands in aim to inspire you to visit this amazing European travel destination. So, without any time to spare, let’s dive into my guide to the 70 Things to do in Malta!

Quick Things to Know Before Visiting Malta

Here are some quick logistical tips for visiting the islands of Malta.

  • The Malta international airport will likely be your port of entry. This is located near the town of Luqa in the middle of the main island– a fair distance from the hotel areas. Luckily, you can pre-book a hotel transfer online for less than 7 euros.
  • While Malta is a small country there is a lot to explore! I highly recommend renting a car, as this will give you the most flexibility to visit all the main attractions in Malta. Use DiscoverCars to compare rates across dealerships and make sure to book in advance (cars sell out in peak season).
  • The official currency is Euros. Travelers arriving from outside of Europe can easily withdraw euros at the airport ATMs (cashpoints), which will offer the cheapest exchange rates.
  • Most Maltese people speak Maltese and English. You will have no problem getting by with English. Many also speak Italian.
  • Don't forget travel insurance. If you're following this guide, there'll be a lot of outdoor adventure activities. I recommend WorldNomads for the best coverage and SafetyWing for longer trips.
  • Wondering where to stay? At the bottom of this blog post, I've included a quick area and accommodation guide to help you pick which region is right for your travel style and budget.

70 Best Things to do in Malta (the Ultimate List)

From swimming in the famous Blue Lagoon to exploring ancient megalithic temples, here are the best things to do in Malta!

1. Walk the Streets of Valletta

Valletta (or Il-Belt), is the tiny capital of Malta, a beautiful walled city adorned in baroque architecture and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its spectacular Grand Harbour, John's Co-Cathedral, and fantastic museums.

This vibrant city is the perfect place to stroll down its iconic narrow streets, taking you back nearly 500 years of history to the time of the Knights of St. John. This was a Roman Catholic order responsible for the city's construction following the notorious Great Siege of 1956.

Here are the top highlights and attractions in the Maltese capital of Valletta:

  • St. John's Co-Cathedral - the heart of Valletta. The Co-Cathedral contains rich baroque art and frescos, impressive marble floors, and incredible vaulted ceilings.
  • Upper Barrakka Gardens & Saluting Battery - great views of the Grand Harbour. Make sure to visit the Saluting Battery, a daily artillery battery display originating from the 16th century.
  • Barrakka Lift - an amazing lift connecting the Valletta waterfront to the Upper Barrakka Gardens (1 euro per person).
  • Traditional Boat to the Three Cities (Għaqda Barklori l-Isla) - hop on a luzzu or dgħajsa across the Grand Harbour to explore the Three Cities of Birgu (Vittoriosa), Senglea, and Cospicua.
  • Fort St. Angelo - an impressive bastioned fort in Birgu at the center of the Malta Grand Harbour.
  • Fort St Elmo - far-reaching fort at the tip of the Sciberras Peninsula.
  • Museums - National Museum of Archeology, MUŻA - National Museum of Art, the Lascaris War Rooms, and the National War Museum.
  • Grandmaster's Palace - beautiful former palace of the Grand Master of the Order of St. John.
  • Casa Rocca Piccola - 16th century Maltese palace

Did you know? Valletta held the title of European Capital of Culture in 2018. The city is also one of the best places to stay in Malta, especially if you're interested in culture and heritage.

The Valletta Street Food and Culture Walking Tour is one of the best ways to experience all of the best highlights & attractions in the city and taste local street food like pastizzi.

2. Explore Comino Island

One of the best ways to spend a day trip in Malta is to visit the small island of Comino.

At just 3.5 square kilometers (1.35 sq mi), Comino is the smallest inhabited island in Malta. However, adventure travelers and nature lovers will find that this amazing limestone island is easily the most beautiful.

Comino Island Aerial View

Known for its astonishing sea caves, crystal clear blue waters, and secluded bays, a visit to Comino should be on everybody's Malta travel itinerary.

The easiest way to see all of the attractions on Comino including the Blue Lagoon, Crystal Lagoon, and Santa Marija Caves is to book a Comino Island boat trip online. These are trips on shared boats and are very affordable. Alternatively, travelers in a group have the option of booking a private tour. I've had a great experience with Outdoor Explorers and highly recommend them.

3. Malta Blue Lagoon

The breathtaking Blue Lagoon is perhaps the most iconic natural attraction in Malta, and one of those places that every traveler should see once in their lifetime.

This clear water lagoon is situated on the western side of Comino, sheltered by limestone cliffs and the neighboring Cominotto islet.

The turquoise water and sandy bottom make swimming in the Blue Lagoon one of the best things to do in Malta if you're looking for the best place to swim and snorkel with many fish and healthy marine life.

4. The Three Cities

The Three Cities refers to the three fortified cities of Birgu (Vittoriosa), Senglea, and Cospicua, located directly across the Grand Harbour from Valletta.

These cities are some of the oldest in Malta, Birgu being the oldest as it was constructed during the Middle Ages.

The best way to visit the Three Cities is to take a boat trip from Valletta in a traditional Maltese boat called a dgħajsa. From the water, you'll get to see all of the amazing fortifications and iconic churches. Most tours will also stop by in Birgu, where you can wander the narrow streets and head up to the Fort of Saint Angelo.

5. Day Trip to Gozo

Gozo Island is the more relaxed sister island located in the north of the Maltese archipelago. At around a third of the size of the main island, Gozo is the perfect place to explore on a day trip.

In my opinion, Gozo is one of the most beautiful places in the Mediterranean. Picture pristine coastlines, untouched country trails, quaint villages, and amazing scuba diving sites. Gozo is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling in Malta.

A popular and adventurous way to explore the island is to book a full-day Quad Bike tour from Malta island. This includes powerboat transport and a visit to some of the most iconic attractions on Gozo including:

  • Ramla Bay
  • Dwejra Bay
  • Calypso Cave
  • Marsalforn & the Salt Pans
  • Powerboat back to Malta via the Blue Lagoon and Comino Caves

Travel Tip: While a day trip to Gozo is an excellent way to see the island, I highly recommend spending more time here. There are so many things to do and see on Gozo, so if you have a couple of days to spare, I highly recommend it!

6. Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Temples

Did you know that on the islands of Malta lie megalithic stone temple structures predating even the Great Pyramids in Egypt?

Two of the best examples of prehistoric Maltese structures are the Ħaġar Qim (pronounced adge-ar-eem) and Mnajdra Temples (mm-nigh-dra), located high on the southern Malta coastline overlooking the nature reserve of Flifla Island. These temples were constructed by a lost and forgotten prehistoric civilization that inhabited Malta as far back as 3600 BCE (that's roughly 1000 years older than the oldest Pyramid in Egypt).

Both temple structures were constructed using massive limestone blocks, some weighing more than 20 tonnes! Very little is known about the site's purpose, but its massive combined effort and intricate attention to detail suggest that these were once very important religious sites.

The two temples are separated by a short 700-meter track and can be visited from the same entrance.

7. Water Sports at Ġnejna Bay (Ta' Marija Cave)

While all the tourists know about Mellieħa Bay and Sliema, few make it out to the spectacular Ġnejna Bay.

This is a local sandy beach situated beneath the historic Ta' Lippija Tower. On the beach, you can rent a kayak, SUP, or jet ski quite cheaply from Ġnejna Watersports.

We decided to rent a kayak and explore the surrounding bay and nearby cliffs. One of the top attractions we found was the Ta' Marija Cave, a deep sea cave located just a short paddle around the southern headland past Pullicino's Cove.

8. Sunset at Dingli Cliffs

The Dingli Cliffs are a long stretch of towering limestone cliffs on Malta’s southwest coast. This area is the highest point in Malta and offers dramatic views of the Mediterranean Sea from its many viewpoints and cliffside hiking trails.

If you're looking for the best way to wind down a long day of exploring the Maltese Islands, head over to Dingli Cliffs for a spectacular sunset.

9. Scuba Diving

Scuba diving is one of the primary draws for many travelers visiting the Maltese Islands.

In fact, Malta is well regarded as one of the best scuba diving destinations in Europe. Dive sites include intricate networks of caves, reefs, and an abundance of shallow wrecks.

The two most popular dives are the Blue Hole dive site on Gozo and the P31 Wreck off Comino. Both of these dives are quite shallow and accessible to even basic open water divers. Some other popular sites include:

  • El Faroud Oil Tanker - best wreck dive, Malta Island
  • MV Karwela - wreck famous for its staircase, Gozo Island
  • Double Arch - popular cave dive, Gozo Island
  • Santa Maria Caves - Comino Island
  • Inland Sea - tunnel towards the open sea, Gozo Island
  • Blenheim Bomber - underwater plane wreck on Malta Island

I dived with St. Andrew's Divers Cove on Gozo and OrangeShark divers from Malta. I highly recommend both of these centers if you're looking for a shop to plan a day of diving or even to get your open water certification.

10. The Blue Grotto

Malta’s Blue Grotto (Taht il-Hnejja) is one of the most beautiful natural caves in the country. Located on the majestic southern coastline, this cave has gained international attention for its sweeping limestone arch above radiant turquoise waters.

Visitors can witness this cave for free from the adjacent viewpoint on the outskirts of the fishing harbor called Wied iż-Żurrieq.

Malta Blue Grotto Viewpoint

However, the best way to experience this remarkable cave is from the water on board a traditional and colorful luzzu fishing boat. These depart from the Wied iż-Żurrieq village and go all the way through the Blue Grotto cave, plus an additional six surrounding sea caves.

If you're staying in one of the popular tourist areas like St Julian's, Valletta, Salina Bay, or Mellieħa, then the easiest way to get to the Blue Grotto is via a full-day overland tour.

Entering the Blue Grotto, Malta

11. Popeye Village & the Anchor Bay Sunset Viewpoint

What was once a film set for the famous 1980 musical 'Popeye' starring Robin Williams has now grown to be one of the most unique tourist attractions in Malta.

The Popeye Village, also known as Sweethaven Village is located in Anchor Bay, just a short drive from the resort area of Mellieħa.

The village is open for tourists to visit from around 10 am during the summer months, usually from June to October. The cost is roughly 16.50 euros for adults, and 12.50 euros for children.

This is one of the most unique things to do in Malta for families and includes access to the film set, use of sun beds, animation shows, a cinema, and even a nine-hole mini-golf course.

Popeye Village Film Set in Malta

While I didn't access the set, I did head down to the famous Anchor Bay sunset point just opposite the village. This is one of the best sunset locations in Malta and offers a great view of the village as well.

12. The Crystal Lagoon

While everyone who visits Malta knows about the Blue Lagoon, few realize that there's an equally beautiful clear water lagoon right around the bend.

Known as Crystal Lagoon, this picturesque sheltered cave is located just south of the Blue Lagoon on Comino Island. This is the perfect place for swimming, snorkeling, cliff jumping, and exploring the many nearby sea caves.

A unique feature of the Crystal Lagoon is the famous tunnel cave. This is a 30-meter-long natural tunnel carved into the nearby rock face. During calm weather conditions, this is a great place to swim through and admire the amazing blue glow.

Malta Crystal Lagoon

13. Cafe del Mar

Okay, I'm going to admit it. I'm not the biggest party animal. In fact, you're more likely to find me on one of the many Malta hiking trails than at a beach club.

However, there is one particular club that I would recommend anyone visit– the Cafe del Mar.

This bar/restaurant is located next to the Malta National Aquarium in St Paul's Bay and features an incredible cliffside infinity pool and relaxed summer vibes.

14. Horse Riding at Golden Bay

Chasing a unique outdoor activity in Malta? Book a sunset trail ride in Golden Bay.

The company I went with is called Golden Bay Horse Riding, they are the leaders in the market and have been running guided trail rides for over 30 years!

I recommend the later session, especially during the summer to avoid the heat and catch a beautiful sunset at the same time.

15. St. John's Co-Cathedral

Lovers of history and remarkable architecture shouldn't miss the spectacular St. John's Co-Cathedral. For anyone who's been traveling through Europe, the cathedral looks just like any other. However, it's not until you step inside that you realize just how incredible this unique Maltese baroque architecture really is.

St. John's Co-Cathedral was built between 1573 and 1577 by Girolamo Cassar and contains masterful works of art. Entrance to the cathedral costs 15 euros per person and is well worth it when in Valletta.

16. Hiking at Għajn Tuffieħa & the Clay Cliffs (Il-Majjistral)

Many tourists visit the famous fine sands of Golden Bay but unfortunately never make it to the beautiful beaches and cliffs right around the corner!

One of my favorite hiking areas in Malta is called the Il-Majjistral Nature & History Park. This is located in the northwest region of Malta Island and forms an area encompassing Golden Bay to Il-Prajjet.

If you're up for a scenic sunrise or sunset hike, I recommend taking one of the trails leading from Għajn Tuffieħa, another beautiful beach. A highlight spot is the famous Clay Cliffs, which is a great place to snap some unique landscape photos.

Malta Clay Cliffs

17. The Underground Tunnels of Valletta

The Knights of St. John didn't build Valletta as a city. Its original purpose was as to serve as an impenetrable fortress to defend the island.

The city walls and prominent fortifications surrounding the Grand Harbour are impressive but It wasn't until 2009 that another extensive defense system was discovered. Beneath Valletta, an unknowing archeological survey to build a new parking lot revealed the extent of a vast underground tunnel system!

The Maltese people used some of these tunnels during World War II's heavy bombings. However, this was just a fraction of the undergrown network.

Today, visitors can visit this underground labyrinth by booking a tour well in advance. Keep in mind that there are only a few tours a week, and there is a long waiting list.

18. Għar Lapsi Hike

Apart from the famous Blue Grotto, the south coast of Malta Island is largely missed by tourists. It's a shame because this region offers some amazing rocky coves and picturesque sea caves.

Ghar Lapsi Beach

If you're looking to escape the resort town crowds and head out for a scenic coastal hike to some secluded coves, don't miss the Lapsi hiking area.

There is a free car park and bus stop just a little further on from the Lapsi Reverse Osmosis plant.

From here, you can hike past the scenic Għar Lapsi cave and dive site towards Għar Hxixa and Għar Neffied. This part of the coast is very beautiful and you'll find some excellent swimming spots too.

19. Malta Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus

While I didn't do this tour, I thought it would be a good suggestion to recommend the Malta hop-on-hop-off bus to travelers who want to go sightseeing to all of the best places to visit in Malta, including some amazing beaches and the most significant historical places in a single day.

Tip: there's also a similar bus tour on Gozo as well.

20. Għar Dalam Cave

Għar Dalam Cave is a must-visit prehistoric site for travelers fascinated by ancient history. This is Malta's oldest site, where archeologists have unearthed remains of animals that have been long lost on these islands.

Included in the discoveries were several bones of dwarf elephants, hippopotamus, and even giant swans. There were also bear and wolf bones found in the cave alongside evidence of human settlement in Malta dating back 7,400 years ago!

Attached to the Għar Dalam cave is a small museum housing many of these findings.

Visiting this significant site is a good idea if you're planning on exploring attractions on the west coast of Malta like Marsaxxlok fishing village, Pretty Bay, and Delimara Point.

21. Il-Kalanka and Delimara Point

Delimara point is a small peninsula stretching out to the easternmost point of Malta. This region is quite remote but definitely worth visiting if you have your own car to get around.

Stop by the Il-Kalanka Lighthouse for a great view, especially during sunset. Alternatively, head down to the Il-Kalanka rocky beach for a local swimming spot without the crowds.

22. St. Peter's Pool

St. Peter's Pool is a natural rocky pool located on the far eastern coast of Malta, just above Il-Kalanka.

This site is great for swimming, relaxing, and cliff jumping into crystal clear water. The pool is quite deep and has a useful steel ladder bolted into the limestone, making it easy to get in and out of the pool.

Many locals and tourists visit the St. Peter's Pool to jump in from the rocky platform. The jump height is roughly 4 meters, which isn't huge but a fun jump!

23. Mountain Biking at Munxar Cliffs

The Munxar Cliffs is another off-the-beaten-path location in Malta worth visiting. These towering limestone cliffs are situated north of Delimara Point and offer breathtaking views over the Meditteranean Sea and large sea caves below.

I explored the Munxar Cliffs on a mountain biking tour from Marsaxlokk to Marsaskala with MC Adventures. This was a fun way to experience all of the beautiful sites around this region, with plenty of stops for great photos.

24. Marsaxlokk Fishing Village (Market)

The village of Marsaxlokk is a colorful fishing town located in the southeast part of Malta. Famous for its colorful traditional fishing boats and vibrant Sunday markets, visiting this picturesque village is a must!

I highly recommend stopping by on a Sunday, where you can stroll the markets traditionally selling fresh fish, but now sell all sorts of handmade crafts and souvenirs.

25. Fort St. Angelo (Valletta)

Staring out into Valletta's Grand Harbour, the impeding Fort St. Angelo is often what first steals your attention.

This bastioned fort is located in Birgu (one of the Three Cities) and was originally built during the medieval period as a castle.

Today, visitors can cross the harbor to explore Saint Angelo's fort, which offers some of the best views of Valletta.

26. Upper Barrakka Gardens & The Saluting Battery

Chasing the best views of the Grand Harbour in Valletta? Head over to the Upper Barrakka Gardens, a historic garden area near Castille Place.

Upper Barrakka Gardens, Malta

These gardens have a rich history dating back to the Italian Knights, who used this place as private gardens.

One of the most fascinating things to do at the Upper Barrakka Gardens is to watch the explosive saluting battery display. This occurs every day around 11 pm and is recognized as being one of the oldest saluting battery's still in operation.

27. Coral Lagoon

Chances are you might have seen photos of the iconic collapsed roof sea cave with crystal clear water. This is known as the Coral Lagoon, and while one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Malta, few actually make it here.

That's because the only access inside this cave is via the sea, requiring entry by boat or kayak.

To get here, I recommend renting a kayak at the nearby Armier Bay Beach and visiting around midday when the sun shines directly into the deep water.

Alternatively, there is a boat trip that makes a stop at the Coral Lagoon, as well as other attractions like the Blue Hole and St. Paul's Islands.

28. Sunset at the Chapel of Immaculate Conception (Mellieħa)

The Chapel of Immaculate Conception is a tiny church chapel situated on the tip of Mellieħa Bay, just near the Coral Lagoon.

This headland is a great spot to sit and watch the sunset, and I guarantee that you won't find any other tourists here! As the sun sets, watch the warm summer glow light up the boats and buildings in the distance.

This is one of my favorite places to visit in Malta!

29. Traditional Dgħajsa or Luzzu Ride on the Grand Harbour (Valletta)

Don't have time to explore the Three Cities? Head down to the Valletta Grand Harbour, just across the street from the Barrakka Gardens lift.

Here, you'll find local boat drivers offering a ride around the Grand Harbour for a cheap fee.

30. Sunset Hike at Mtahleb

The small village of Mtahleb is another hidden gem in Malta that I highly recommend any adventure traveler check out!

This rural enclave is located in the remote western regions of the main island of Malta. You won't find many buildings, just a few farmhouses and a single church dotting the coast. I've been told that even Maltese locals hardly make it out here!

However, if you're into hiking or just chasing one of the best sunset locations, then exploring the coastal tracks of Miġra l-Ferħa is one of the best ways to spend an afternoon in Malta!

Hiking in Mtahleb, Malta

31. Wied il-Mielaħ Window (Gozo Island)

Yes, the famous Azure Window has collapsed. However, did you know that there is another impressive natural arch on Gozo Island?

Admittedly, this arch isn't as spectacular as the original Azure Window, but the amazing Wied il-Mielaħ is certainly a worthwhile stop when touring Gozo Island.

This arch is tucked into the cliff line and only really visible after walking down a set of rocky steps. The water below the arch is a deep shade of turquoise and great for photos.

The Gozo arch is located in the far northwest of the island and accessible via a country road. The best way to get here is to have your own car. However, some of the tours recommended in this blog post also make a stop here, including the self-drive ATV tour.

32. Rock Climbing On Gozo

Did you know that the island of Gozo is one of the best rock climbing destinations in Europe? Whether you're a pro looking for some insane overhangs and epic deep-water soloing crags or a beginner wanting to try a new adventure activity in Malta, Gozo is the spot!

We spent an afternoon climbing and abseiling at Wied il-Mielaħ (above) with 'Didi' from Gozo Climbing and organized by Gozo Adventures. This was one of my favorite outdoor activities on the island and one of the best things to do in Malta for young adults.

Rock climbing in Malta

32. Kayak from Gozo to Comino

Adventure travelers staying on Gozo will want to skip the regular boat tour to the Blue Lagoon. Instead, book a kayaking adventure across the channel and explore not only the Blue Lagoon but many other clear water bays and epic sea caves of Comino Island.

Even if you are an experienced kayaker, local rules state that tourists must be accompanied by a professional guide to cross the channel. Gozo Adventures organized my Comino kayaking trip, departing from the beautiful Ħondoq ir-Rummien Beach on the south side of Gozo.

The trip takes less than 15 minutes in good weather conditions, allowing for a full day to explore Comino. This kayak trip is one of the best adventure experiences in Malta and easily the best way to explore the hidden gems of these spectacular islands.

33. Ġgantija Megalithic Temple Complex (Gozo Island)

When visiting Gozo, make sure to stop by the ancient Ġgantija Temple Complex– the oldest neolithic site in Malta. This megalithic temple resembles the Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Temples, with huge limestone boulders and intricate rock carvings dating back to roughly 3600 BCE!

This makes Ġgantija Temple the second oldest religious structure in the world after Göbekli Tepe in Turkey. And, therefore this is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Malta for lovers of ancient history.

Together with the other Megalithic Temples of Malta, this complex is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors will find a newly renovated museum at the entrance, housing some incredible treasures.

34. Visit Rabat (Victoria) on Gozo Island

Rabat, also known as Victoria, is the capital of Gozo and is famous for its imposing hilltop Cittadella (Citadel) standing tall on the geographical nucleus of the island.

Victoria Cittadella on Gozo Island, Malta

While the city is the most populated on Gozo, only around 7000 people are living here, a testament to the laid-back nature of this island.

When in Gozo, visiting Victoria is a must, here are some of the top highlights & worthwhile attractions you won't want to miss:

  • The Cittadella
  • Grand Basilica of St. George
  • Republic Street (main commercial heart of the city)
  • The Old Prison
  • Folklore Museum
  • Citadel Armoury
  • Independence Square

Fun Fact: Historians believe that Rabat (which translates to suburb in Arabic) has maintained settlement for as long as 7000 years.

35. Ta' Ċenċ Cliffs and Sanap Cliffs Sunset Points (Gozo Island)

Island life is all about adventures and chasing sunsets. When visiting Malta's sister island, Gozo you'll want to head down to the south coast to wrap up your day.

Here, you'll discover two amazing sunset viewpoints, the Ta' Ċenċ Cliffs and the Sanap Cliffs. These locations are just a short drive apart and both offer dramatic coastal cliff vistas that'll blow you away!

36. Beach Hopping on Gozo Island

While Malta island has some amazing beaches and secluded coves, my favorite sandy beaches are found on Gozo Island.

If it's fun in the sun you're chasing, then one of the top things to do in Malta is to get yourself a quad bike or rental car and go beach hopping on Gozo.

Some of my favorite beaches include:

  • Ramla Beach (famous red sand)
  • Hondoq ir-Rummien (picturesque sandy beach)
  • Mġarr ix-Xini (secluded hidden gem)
  • Xlendi Beach
  • Inland Sea
  • Wied il-Għasri (amazing snaking cove)

37. Calypso Cave

Calypso's Cave (L-ghar ta' Calisso) is one of the most popular and most famous mythological sites in Malta. Located near Ramla Bay on Gozo Island, Calypso Cave is believed to be the cave mentioned in Homer's ancient poem "The Odyssey".

The legend has it that the nymph Calypso kept Odysseus there for seven years after shipwrecking on Gozo.

Today, the cave is closed to visitors due to a partially collapsed roof. However, this doesn't mean it should be missed, especially if you are interested in ancient Greek mythology. There's also an excellent viewing platform above the cave, offering remarkable views of Ramla Beach and the northern Gozo coastline.

Travel Tip: Calypso's Cave is commonly confused with the more popular Tal-Mixta Cave (number 48 below), which is located on the opposite side of Ramla Bay.

38. Try Pastizzi (Maltese Street Food)

Maltese culture and cuisine are largely a reflection of its long and contentious history. From Arab to French rule, among others, the island nation has developed a truly unique mix that is entirely their own.

However, sometimes, even with all of the complexities of mixing cultural influences simplicity emerges.

And it doesn't get much simpler (or more delicious) than the humble pastizzi.

This is a local Maltese street food item made from traditional savory pastry and stuffed with delicious ricotta or curried peas filling. You can pick these up for less than a euro in most villages across the islands.

Food tip: For those visiting Gozo, I highly recommend the Crystal Palace (Is-Serkin) pastizzi shop.

39. The Malta Blue Hole

Everybody knows about the Blue Hole in Belize and Dahab. But, did you know that Malta has its very own Blue Hole?

This natural geological formation is a 15-meter (roughly 50 feet) deep cylindrical coastal tube located in Dwerja Bay, on the west coast of Malta.

The Blue Hole is arguably the most famous dive site in Malta, and an absolute must for all scuba diving enthusiasts. It features an imposing underwater arch and wide cave and divers can enjoy visibility of up to 40 meters!

40. Fungus Rock

While not as famous as the Blue Hole and nearby Inland Sea (number 43 below) the protruding Fungus Rock is another impressive geological feature worth checking out in Dwerja Bay (Gozo).

This tiny islet is a huge chunk of limestone rock on the outside of the perfectly circular Black Lagoon. While most people glance by it, I believe this icon to be one of the best photography subjects on Gozo.

Fungus Rock and Black Cove on Gozo Island, Malta

Did you know? The name "Fungus Rock" (which is also sometimes called Mushroom Rock, or Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral) comes from a time when the Knights Hospitaller discovered a unique plant growing on top of the rock. At first, this discovery appeared to be a mushroom but turned out to be a parasitic flowering plant. The Knights used this plant (despite the repugnant odor) as a medical cure for dysentery for many years.

41. Book a Romantic Gozo Picnic

Considering visiting Malta on a honeymoon? If so, one of the best things to do in Malta for couples is to book an organized, romantic Gozo Picnic.

Ana, a Gozo local, is well-known on the island for arranging amazing outdoor dinner spreads in stunning and secret coastal regions of Gozo for over four years.

Whether it's your honeymoon, anniversary, birthday, or any other excuse to plan one of the most romantic evenings of your life, message Ana on Instagram (your second half will thank you).

42. See the Remains of the Azure Window (Gozo)

If you google natural attractions in Malta, the first answer will likely be the Azure Window (Dwejra Window), a remarkable natural rock arch sitting beside Gozo's famous Blue Hole and featured in the world-famous Game of Thrones series.

Unfortunately, this Maltese icon met its fate when it collapsed into the sea in 2017. This was a tragic loss for locals and past visitors alike.

Nevertheless, there is an upside to this tragic event. If you never got a chance to see it standing like myself, you can now explore its underwater remains on an extended dive from the Blue Hole.

43. The Inland Sea (Gozo Island)

The Inland Sea (sometimes called Qawra in Maltese) is another unique natural formation in Malta attracting beachgoers and divers alike.

This is perhaps the most unique beach in Malta since its pebbly shores are separated from the Mediterranean sea by a thin natural tunnel carved through a rocky headland in Dwerja Bay.

On a fine day, travelers can swim or scuba dive through the tunnel from the saltwater lagoon, which makes for a thrilling adventure!

44. Wied il-Għasri Beach on Gozo Island

Wied il-Għasri is a unique natural gorge carved into the northern coast of Gozo Island. Here, travelers can find a long, snaking stream of pristine turquoise water, towered by steeply sloping limestone cliffs.

This location is edged into a scenic valley and offers a unique and incredibly picturesque location for swimming, snorkeling, or hiking.

45. Għar ir-Riħ - Cathedral Cave (Gozo)

While Wied il-Għasri (above) is gaining popularity, many travelers still aren't aware of the nearby Għar ir-Riħ, also known as Cathedral Cave.

This stunning sea cave is one of the most beautiful in the archipelago and a popular dive site for experienced divers. What makes this dive site so spectacular is its amazing domed vault, accessible only via a large opening at 6-18 meters under the water.

While I didn't get a chance to dive at this site or experience the Cathedral Cave myself, I did jump and swim into the sea cave one calm afternoon to explore the sea opening. I recommend only doing this if you are a very experienced swimmer and only in superb conditions, as this location can get quite rough in bad weather.

46. Gozo Salt Pans

Did you know that in ancient times, due to its unique use for food preservation, salt was so highly valued that it was used as a currency?

While we might take regular table salt for granted in modern times, the ancient Gozitans sure didn't.

To gather this life-sustaining mineral, the people of Gozo carved large, square salt pans along the coast. These are shallow, artificial dishes used to collect and dry sea water, leaving behind a thin layer of pure sea salt.

Today, these salt pans are still in use as far back as Phoenician and Roman times. You can find the best examples of these famous salt pans in the north of Gozo Island (the Xwejni Salt Pans), and on the west coast (the Xlendi Salt Pans).

47. Go Sailing Around Malta

Looking for an amazing Mediterranean sailing experience? With its pristine coastlines, secluded coves, and calm, turquoise waters, Malta is up there with the best sailing destinations in Europe.

Charter and skipper your own vessel, or jump on board a private boat charter, visiting sparsely-visited gems and iconic Maltese coastal attractions like the Blue Lagoon.

48. Tal-Mixta Cave at Ramla Beach, Gozo

While I mentioned Calypso Cave above, Tal-Mixta Cave is another cliffside cave in Ramla Bay (Gozo Island).

Tal-Mixta is a large, open cavern accessible via a back and side tunneled entrance. Its wide, open front face makes for excellent views over Ramla Beach and is one of the best sunset viewpoint locations in Malta.

49. Santa Maria Cave (Comino Island)

Ready to experience the most spectacular, bluest, and outright translucent water you've ever seen? That is exactly what you will find at Santa Marija Cave (Santa Maria Cave) on Comino Island.

This beautiful natural sea cave is accessible only via the sea and is usually included on all of the best Comino and Blue Lagoon boat tours.

Again, I've had a great experience on the Comino boat tour with Outdoor Explorers and highly recommend booking this option if you want to enter the Santa Maria Cave.

50. Elephant Head Rock (Comino Island)

Elephant Head Rock, also called Elephant Rock, or Elephant Arch, is a spectacular natural arch located on the east side of Comino Island. You don't need to look too closely to figure out where this rocky arch got its name.

Again, you'll likely visit this spot if you book the Comino island boat tour above. So, look out for it, and make sure to snap a photo!

51. Visit Mdina - The Former Capital of Malta

While Valletta is the modern capital of Malta, the original capital was Mdina, located near the center of Malta.

This is a tiny fortified city with many significant historical sites. Originally built in the medieval period, this hillside location has been fortified for nearly 3000 years but has been inhabited since prehistory!

However, upon the arrival of the Knights of the Order of St. John, Birgu (opposite Valletta) became the new administrative capital. As a result, Mdina never regained its pre-1530 significance, hence its famous nickname, The Silent City.

Today, visiting Mdina is a must, with its spectacular Baroque architecture, maze-like narrow streets, and impressive city walls making it one of the top tourist attractions in Malta.

Mdina Malta

52. Rabat

I know what you're thinking, you've already included a visit to Rabat on this list of Malta things to do!

Yes, you're right, but remember, Rabat simply translates to suburb in Arabic, and hence is the traditional name for the capital of Gozo and the townships outside of Mdina.

You'll likely pass Rabat when heading to the Main Gate of Mdina. But, I recommend exploring the local streets beyond as well. If you're up for a local experience, head down to Crystal Palace for some one-of-a-kind pastizzi or one of the main local eateries for some traditional Rabbit Stew.

53. Hire a Jet Ski or go Parasailing

After an adrenaline-fueled water activity? One of the most fun things to do during good weather in Malta is to rent a jet ski and explore the coastline.

Some of the best places to do this are:

  • Armier Bay (North Malta)
  • Mellieħa Bay
  • Maraskala (South Eastern Region)

Alternatively, if you're feeling super adventurous, another popular adventure activity is parasailing from St. George's Bay (near Paceville).

Travel Tip: Prefer to be shown the best spots coastal with a local guide instead? Check out this Jet Ski Experience tour in the south of Malta.

54. St Paul's Island

St Paul's Island, also known as Selmunett is a tiny islet straddled near the northeast tip of Malta Island, near the town of Selmun. While this tiny island remains uninhabited since the end of World War II, it does make for an off-the-beaten-path destination worth checking out.

St. Paul's Island, Malta

Of course, you'll need a boat, jet ski, or kayak to reach it. But, when you do, you'll likely find a deserted island dropping into clean water. The only remaining landmark on St Paul's Island is the Statue of Saint Paul beside the ruined 1649 tower by Grand Master Giovanni Paolo Lascaris.

Statue of Saint Paul on St. Paul's Island, Malta

Did you know? St. Paul's Island is sometimes referred to as St. Paul's Islands (the plural form). This is because at first glance, it looks like there are two islands. However, it is only one, connected by a thin isthmus.

55. Tarxien Temples and Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum

By now, you'll already know that Malta is a top destination for all fans of ancient history. The final megalithic temple site on this Malta travel guide is the incredible Tarxien Temples and Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, located near the modern capital of Valletta.

The Tarxien Temple is an archeological complex comprising of three temples dating back to roughly 3150 BCE. While similar to the other temple structures on Gozo and Malta islands, the Tarxien Temples are particularly interesting due to several intricate stonework pieces depicting domestic animals.

Additionally, visitors will want to check out the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, also called the Tarxiem Hypogeum. This is a neolithic subterranean structure from around roughly the same time. Interestingly, this underground sanctuary is believed to have been some type of significant necropolis, housing more than 7,000 ancient bodies.

56. The Markus Divinus Zafrana Boutique Winery

To experience the very best of local Maltese wine, produced with indigenous grape varieties and reflecting Malta's unique heritage, make sure to try Markus Divinus' wine.

Better yet, arrange a visit to the Markus Divinus Zafrana Boutique Winery, located near the famous Dingli Cliffs on the main island of Malta.

On my visit, we were lucky enough to visit this quaint winery during a special wine tasting event. We were blown away by the hospitality and quality of wines on offer, highly recommend!

57. Ninu's Cave & Xerri's Grotto (Gozo Island)

At Xagħra, near the middle of Gozo Island lies two impressive underground caves with a unique twist– both are accessible by walking downstairs in a private residence!

That's because both of these caves were individually discovered by unexpecting locals digging wells. Xerri's Grotto and Ninu's Cave feature incredible limestone stalactites and a local guide will show you the most interesting ones at each.

Xerri's Grotto is the largest of the two and is entered via a 10-meter spiral staircase.

58. Sunset at Saint Agatha's Tower (It-Torri L-Aħmar)

When visiting the beautiful Mellieħa Bay (Għadira), it's hard to miss the striking red castle-like tower standing tall on the nearby hillside.

This tower is called It-Torri L-Aħmar, Saint Agatha's Tower, or simply the Red Tower of Mellieħa. This is a considerable bastioned watchtower on a strategic hill overlooking the entire northern peninsula, with panoramic views out to Comino and Gozo Islands.

The Red Tower is one of the best places to visit in Malta for sunset, due to its close proximity to popular hotels and resorts and expansive views on offer.

Red Tower at Sunset, Malta (Saint Agatha's Tower)

Did you know? The people of Malta used Saint Mary's Tower on Comino and Saint Agatha's Tower on Malta Island to send warnings of pirate and enemy invasions between the islands by lighting fires in the tallest bastions.

59. Time Your Visit With a Maltese Village Feast

It's true, perhaps the only thing the Maltese like more than food and fireworks are their patron saints. And, if you're lucky enough to time your visit to Malta with one of the nearly 100 village feasts, you'll get to see all of these three determining cultural cornerstones come together.

These religious and traditional events happen every year, with each village celebrating a different patron saint (or sometimes more). The feasts, or festas started under the rule of the Knights of St John and include religious processions, lively band marches and performances, delicious street foods, and of course, elaborate firework shows.

Village Feast in Malta

The Maltese are extremely proud of their traditions and are very excited to share them with tourists. We visited several feasts during our time traveling in Malta but one of the best was the Feast of Our Lady of the Lilly in Mqabba. This was easily one of the most fantastic fireworks displays I've ever experienced!

60. Visit the Game of Thrones Filming Locations

While everyone knows Dubrovnik as King's Landing, many don't realize that the original Game of Thrones filming location for several first-season scenes took place in Malta.

Without giving away too many spoilers for those who still haven't watched the greatest TV show ever made, here are some of the main GoT filming locations in Malta.

  • Rabat (Malta) - Season 1 Red Keep's Garden
  • Mdina Gate - King's Landing
  • Fort Saint Angelo - Red Keep Prison
  • Mtahleb Cliffs - Famous Daenery's baby dragon scene
  • Azure Window (now collapsed) - Dothraki Wedding

61. The Mosta Rotunda

The Rotunda of Mosta, also known as the Mosta Dome, or the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady is one of the most impressive neoclassical basilicas in Malta.

Even with architectural masterpieces like Valletta's St. John's Co-Cathedral, the Mosta Rotunda is still the largest and most famous church in Malta. Its design is based on the famous Pantheon in Rome and has the largest unsupported dome in the world.

Whether you visit the interior or photograph it from afar, visiting this remarkable building is a must-do activity for your Malta itinerary!

Mosta Rotunda (Mostar Dome)

62. Visit Sliema & St Julian's

The region just north of Valletta is Malta's primary hotel and resort strip. These regions are comprised of Sliema, St. Julian's, and Paceville. If it's nightlife, shopping, or scenic coastal bars and cafes you're after, you'll want to visit this tourist area.

Better yet, some of Malta's best accommodation options are found here including the Marriot, Hilton, and the famous 1926 Hotel & Spa. So, if you're still in the process of planning your travels in Malta, this neighborhood might be your best pick for accommodation!

63. Hike the Victoria Lines

Colloquially known as the 'Great Wall' of Malta, the strategically constructed Victoria Lines are a 12-kilometer (7.45 mi) long fortification front built by the British Empire during the late 1800s.

This long wall runs all the way from Madliena in the east to Binġemma and the limits of Rabat in the west. During the cooler and greener months, hiking Victoria Lines is one of the best things to do in Malta for young adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts.

The trail follows the old wall structure running along the geographical barrier called the Great Fault. Along the way, you'll pass significant landmarks like Fort Mosta, the Targa Battery, the Dejra Lines, and Fort Bingemma.

64. Eat Traditional Maltese Cuisine (Best Places to Eat)

While I've already mentioned Malta's traditional street food, pastizzi, the truth is that Malta is a culinary paradise, with a huge variety of delicious cultural dishes to discover.

In fact, many consider Malta one of Europe's gastronomical capitals, with over 31 Michelin restaurants on the islands. But, you don't have to fine dine to get a real taste of authentic and delicious Maltese cuisine.

Based on my experience in Malta, here are the must-visit restaurants and cafes to try

  • Don Berto - Birgu
  • Coast at Cassarini - Wied iż-Żurrieq (Blue Grotto township)
  • The Fat Rabbit - Gozo
  • Makren's Bakery - Gozo
  • Ta' Rikardu - Gozo
  • Cafe del Mar - St Paul's Bay
  • Diar il-Bniet - Dingli
  • Nenu The Artisan Baker - Valletta
  • Il Pirata - Mellieħa Bay
  • Fontanella Tea Garden - Mdina
  • No 43 - Valletta

65. Museum Hopping in Valletta

For lovers of culture, history, and art, you won't want to pass up some of the excellent museum visits on offer in Malta's capital.

Some of the best museums worth visiting include

  • National Museum of Archaeology
  • MUZA - Museum of Fine Arts
  • Palace Armoury
  • National War Museum - St Elmo Fort
  • The Lascaris War Rooms
  • Malta Maritime Museum

Budget Travel Tip: For travelers looking to check out multiple museums in Malta, I recommend purchasing a Heritage Malta Multisite pass for 25 euros in person at any Heritage Malta site.

66. Għar Ħasan Cave

Looking for an off-the-beaten-path hidden gem in Malta that not even most locals know about?

For travelers with their own car, drive down to the Għar Ħasan cave, located in the south of Malta near the Malta Freeport. This site is technically closed and not an official tourist site, but is easily accessible via a large gap in the fence near a parking area beside 'MaritimeMT'.

While access to the deepest parts of this beautiful sea cave is off-limits, we were able to explore some tunneled sections by turning at the steel gate once inside. The view from the entrance of this cave is also phenomenal!

Careful though, being a closed site, the walkway and barriers are not maintained!

67. Party

Visiting Malta with friends? Or, want to make new ones? With its many vibrant bars and eclectic clubs, Malta is well-known as a great party destination in Europe.

You'll find many great venues stretched out around Valletta, Sliema, St Julian's, and Paceville. But, if you're after a true island party experience, don't look past the famous 5-hour Lazy Pirate Boat Party aboard the Fernandez 2.

68. Unwind at Mellieħa

Mellieħa Bay is a beautiful village in the north of Malta. This region offers a more laid-back beach vibe than the dynamic and animated neighborhoods north of Valletta.

Famous for having the longest sandy beach in Malta, this area is great for families or couples looking for a relaxed Maltese holiday experience. The beach also has quite shallow waters far out into the bay, making it one of the best beaches for children.

Whether you're staying at one of the resorts or boutique hotels, or just visiting for a day trip from other regions, there's plenty to do! Lounge at the famous Mellieħa Bay beach (Għadira Bay), cafe hop on the waterfront, hike up to the famous Red Tower via the Foresta 2000 Nature Reserve or take the bus to the quaint northern beaches like Armier Bay & Ramla tal-Bir.

69. Stare Out to Filfla Island

When visiting the top southern attractions on Malta Island like the Blue Grotto, Ħaġar Qim, or the Dingli Cliffs, you might notice the tall rocky outcrop in the distance.

This is Malta's fourth unofficial island called Filfla. Unlike the main islands, this tiny speck is an uninhabited and mostly barren island with a Marine Protected designation. Additionally, it's home to the endemic wall lizard, door snail, as well as one of the world's largest colonies of European Storm Petrel.

Due to its protected nature, tourists are not able to explore the island on foot. However, it is a beautiful landmark and makes for some great photos from the southern shores.

70. Hiking in tal-Inwadar National Park

Sadly, tourists hardly make it out to the little-known tal-Inwadar National Park (Il-Park Nazzjonali tal-Inwadar), situated on the easternmost tip of Malta Island.

This quiet coastal region complete with easy trails and amazing Azul-water cove is only a relatively new National Park, receiving its status in 2016.

If you're looking for a quiet place for an evening walk near Marsaskala, don't miss this hidden gem in Malta!

Where to Stay in Malta

While visitors will find hotels and resorts scattered all over Malta's islands, the most popular neighborhoods to base yourself in Malta include Valletta, Sliema & St Julian's, Mellieħa Bay, and Gozo Island.

Travelers also have a broad variety of accommodation types, from 5-star resorts to traditional terraced boutique hotels. To save you time searching, below are the four best accommodation picks for Malta, based on location, reviews, and my personal experience.

  • St Julian's & Sliema Area: The Hilton
This is Malta's premiere resort, located at the heart of the picturesque Portomaso Marina. This is a great pick if you're trying to balance great location with utmost luxury.
  • Valletta: Iniala Harbour House
Perched atop Valletta's stunning St Barbara Bastion, this incredible boutique experience is well-regarded as one of the best accommodation options in Malta. The experience offers stunning views of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities from traditional Maltese balconies.
  • Mellieħa - db Seabank Resort
The db Seabank is well-regarded as the best resort in the calmer Mellieħa area. Situated just feet from the white sandy shores of Malta's longest beach, this complete all-inclusive hotel offers features five restaurants, a fitness center, a spa, multiple pools, and even a bowling alley!
  • Gozo - Quaint Boutique Hotel (Nadur)
Accommodation on Malta's quieter sister island should reflect its more peaceful and traditional ambiance. This beautifully renovated boutique hotel is situated directly beside the Nadur Parish Church, with spacious balcony terraces looking over the town square.

Travel tip: Accommodation in Malta sells out quickly, especially for the summer vacation period. This is a location where you do not want to book at the last minute!

How to Get Around in Malta

While this island nation is the fifth smallest country in Europe, as you know by now, there are so many attractions and interesting things to do in Malta scattered over the three islands.

For those lucky enough to secure one in advance, the best way to get around is to rent your own car. Driving in Malta is quite easy and you can take the vehicle across to Comino cheaply on the ferry. However, being a small country, rental cars often sell out during the busy period.

Therefore, it's a good idea to check availability and prices across dealerships using DiscoverCars well in advance.

Alternatively, if you don't want to drive, you can use Malta's well-connected bus service to the main tourist areas. This is a very affordable and reliable way to get around Malta.

Renting your own transport is a great way to get off the beaten path in Malta!

Hopping Between Gozo, Comino, & Malta

Honestly, a trip to Malta is incomplete if you don't visit the Gozo and Comino!

I recommend visiting the smallest island of Comino on a day trip, either via the public ferry in Ċirkewwa, or on an organized boat trip.

On the other hand, Gozo is much larger and deserves at least a night or two's stay. To get here, head to Ċirkewwa and take the public Gozo Ferry across the channel (roughly 15 minutes).

Alternatively, travelers with less time can also explore Gozo on an ATV self-drive day trip, which includes a boat stop at the Blue Lagoon.

Faqs About Travel in Malta

How many days in Malta is enough?

However, budget travelers can find relatively affordable guest-house accommodation and youth hostels, and eat quite affordably by sticking to street food and shopping at supermarkets like LIDL.

Where is the airport?

The Malta International Airport is located in the south of the main island, roughly 9 kilometers from the capital city of Valletta. There is no international airport on Gozo or Comino.

Wondering where to stay on Gozo? Read this 2023 accommodation guide to the best boutique hotels on Gozo Island, Malta!

While there are plenty of luxurious 5-star resorts in Malta, a stay in Gozo is all about its quaint and traditional boutique hotels.

These small, homey lodgings offer a more authentic travel experience and most definitely don’t skimp out on luxury. In this accommodation guide, I’ve listed the 10 best places to stay on Gozo to help you plan your travels.

Gozo Island Dining

In a Rush? Here are the Best Gozo Boutique Hotels

Due to its small size and well-connected network of buses and roads, choosing the ideal location to stay in Gozo is less crucial than on the main island of Malta.

You'll find great boutique hotels dotted all over the island, from Nadur to Xlendi. Below are the three best accommodation options in Gozo.

  • Quaint Boutique Hotel - Nadur
Accommodation on Malta’s quieter sister island should reflect its more peaceful and traditional ambiance. This beautifully renovated boutique hotel is situated directly beside the Nadur Parish Church, with spacious balcony terraces looking over the town square.
  • Viewpoint Boutique Living - Xlendi
This family-run boutique hotel dates back 300 years and is situated on a beautiful cliff overlooking the Xlendi Valley and the Mediterranean Sea. The location is ideal for couples looking to get away, with convenient access to the beach and just a short 2 km drive to the Citadella.
  • Kempinski Hotel - San Lawrenz
While not a Gozo boutique hotel– travelers preferring modern, Gozo luxury hotels, the Kempinski Hotel is still a great bet. This amazing hotel is located in San Lawrenz, on a 30,000m² tropical oasis. An excellent choice for larger groups and families as there are self-catering apartment options as well!

7. Il-Logga Boutique Hotel

If, on the contrary, you are not looking to be situated in the midst of Victoria city, Il-Logga Boutique Hotel is a nice alternative located in a quieter area. We find it to be an excellent choice for those looking for a relaxing stay with panoramic views.

The most detailed roundup of the best Malta sunset viewpoints on the islands of Malta, Gozo, and Comino.

It’s no doubt that the Maltese Islands are one of the best Mediterranean travel destinations for adventurers and viewpoint seekers.

From its high limestone cliffs to its epic natural arches, the archipelago of Malta also offers some of the best sunsets in Europe.

That’s why, in this guide, I’ll reveal the top 21 sunset spots in Malta, Gozo, and Comino. I hope it will convince you to visit this amazing adventure travel destination!

Sunset cliffs in Malta

First: Here are Malta's Best Sunset Tours

Sunset in Malta

Best Sunset Spots on Malta's Main Island

1. Dingli Cliffs

The Dingli Cliffs is a long stretch of towering limestone cliffs on the southwest coast of Malta's main island. At around 250 meters above sea level, this 2-kilometer cliff line includes Malta's highest points, offering excellent views over the Mediterranean Sea.

There are several viewpoints along this stretch of white cliffs, but my favorites are remote stretches of road leading up to the Radar ('Il Ballun'). From here, you'll get the most beautiful sunsets just a short walk from your car.

Sunset at the Dingli Cliffs, Malta

2. Chapel of Immaculate Conception in Mellieħa Bay

While the Dingli Cliffs are one of the most popular places to watch the sunset, you'll also find several hidden gems just like this tiny church hidden away in Malta's northeast point near the Coral Lagoon.

The Chapel of Immaculate Conception is a tiny church overlooking the pristine waters of Mellieħa Bay. I can almost guarantee that there won't be any other tourists here, which makes it the most romantic place to watch the warm summer glow fade behind the hilltop churches.

Car Rentals in Malta

The best way to experience both Malta and Gozo islands is to rent your own car! I recommend booking well in advance using price comparison sites like DiscoverCars if traveling in the busy summer season.

3. Mtahleb

In the remote western tip of Malta, you'll find the wild region of Mtahleb. This is a great coastal hiking region and one of the best sunset points to watch the sun fade behind the horizon.

One of my favorite viewpoints in this region is Miġra l-Ferħa, a high cliff dropping vertically into deep, blue water and providing spectacular views!

4. The Blue Grotto & Wied Iż-Żurrieq

The Blue Grotto of Malta is an epic sea cave filled with crystal-clear water. It's one of the most popular sites in the country, but did you know that it's also a great place to spend your golden hour?

There is a viewpoint just behind the Blue Grotto near the village of Wied Iż-Żurrieq offering breathtaking views of the setting sun to the west. You can also head down to the village, where you'll find some excellent places to sit down near the edge of the sea.

5. Malta Sunset Cruise

Malta's coastline is incredibly unique, and there's no better way to explore it than from the water.

That's why I highly recommend booking a Maltese Sunset Cruise. These trips depart from Buggiba Jetty, which is easy to get to from the main tourist hotel areas.

The cruise includes a scenic boat ride, stopping at some of the best locations including the must-visit Blue Lagoon during the sunset!

6. Popeye Village Viewpoint at Anchor Bay

The Popeye Village on the western side of the island is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Malta. However, many don't know that its location in Anchor Bay is also a great place to visit, especially if you're chasing sunset viewpoints!

The edges of this narrow inlet are surrounded by rocky slopes forming a sheltered bay with a beautiful view of the setting sun.

Sunset at Anchor Bay, Malta

7. Golden Bay

Golden Bay is world-famous for its red sands and crystal clear water, and due to its location on the western side of Malta, it's also the perfect sunset beach!

I recommend making a trip to Golden Bay for an afternoon swim, then relaxing on its golden sands while watching the sun set behind the limestone cliffs.

8. Ghajn Tuffieha Bay

The unique clay cliffs of Għajn Tuffieħa in Malta's Il-Majjistral Nature & History Park is another excellent place to spend the last hours of the day.

This spot is located just south of the popular Golden Bay, but attracts a fraction of the tourists. I recommend hiking out to the Il-Qarraba headland, where you'll get a great view of the coast in both directions. Alternatively, walk across to Ġnejna Bay, another beautiful beach with many picturesque locations.

9. The Red Tower (It-Torri L-Ahmar) in Mellieha

If you're staying in the popular tourist hub of Mellieħa Bay, then you'll undoubtedly have spotted the Red Tower protruding from its hilltop location in the north.

This is known as It-Torri L-Aħmar, or Saint Agatha's Tower, and it's one of the best places to experience beautiful Maltese sunsets. Either walk from Mellieħa or drive up to the nearby parking area. From here, you'll get excellent views of Comino and the Gozo Channel!

10. Fomm ir-rih

Another off-the-beaten-path beach on the western side of Malta's main island, Fomm ir-rih is definitely worth adding to your sunset-chasing itinerary.

While the pebble beach itself is a little tricky to get down to, the cliffs above it make for an excellent viewpoint. There's also a historic WW2 Pillbox right nearby, which might be worth checking out!

We explored this region by renting a kayak at neighboring Gnejna Bay, which I highly recommend!

Coast of Malta

11. The Grand Harbour in Valletta

Valletta's Grand Harbour is perhaps the most iconic place in the country. While there aren't any great spots to watch the sunset over the water, it's still one of the most picturesque places during Golden Hour.

Head over to the Upper Barrakka Gardens for excellent views of the harbor, or pick a spot by the waterfront boardwalk and watch the traditional boats plotting along.

12. The Three Cities

Across the Grand Harbour lies Malta's Three Cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua. This area is rich in history and traditional Maltese culture, but also offers some spectacular viewpoints over the capital city.

Unmissable Sunset Locations on Gozo

13. Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs

With remote, rugged coastlines and epic geological formations, Malta's sister island of Gozo is the country's adventure capital! One of my favorite Gozo sunset points is the Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs, situated on the island's southern coast near the village of Sannat.

Depending on the time of the year, you'll either get to watch the sun slip beyond the Mediterranean horizon or slowly set behind the white cliffs.

Ta Cenc Cliffs Viewpoint at Sunset, Gozo Island, Malta

14. Sanap Cliffs Sunset Viewpoint on Gozo

Along the same cliff line as Ta’ Ċenċ lies another breathtaking sunset spot named the Sanap Cliffs.

This is another great spot as it's one of the highest points of Gozo Island. Additionally, the views of nearby Rabat and its famous Citadella.

15. Wied il-Mielaħ

Gozo Island is well-known for its awesome natural arches. While the Azure window is no more, Wied il-Mielaħ is still a remarkable feature worth checking out, especially during sunset.

From this vantage point, the sun usually sets behind the coast, and if you're lucky, you'll get a golden ray of light shining through the arch!

Travel Tip: When touring Gozo's rugged north coast, make sure to stop by at the nearby Wied il-Ghasri Beach and the Marsalforn Salt Flats, two more epic spots for sunset photography!

16. Dwejra Bay

Dwejra Bay is a unique place and home to several highlight attractions like the Blue Hole, Fungus Rock, and the Inland Sea. And, due to its western location, it's also one of the best sunset points in Gozo.

Grab a mat and climb up to the cliffs above the clear blue water of the Blue Lagoon for one of the stand-out viewpoints in the region!

17. Tal Mixta Cave

Heading over to the northern end of Gozo and we'll find the famous red sands of Ramla Bay, one of the most popular beaches in Malta thanks to its shallow waters and soft sand.

While the beach itself is great during the sunset, I recommend walking up to Tal-Mixta Cave, hidden away on the cliffs to the east. This cave features a huge, open face, framing the beach lit up by the golden glow of the setting summer sun.

Tal Mixta Cave Viewpoint of Ramla Bay, Malta

18. Calypso Cave Viewpoint

Sitting on top of a hill on the opposite side of Rambla Bay lies another famous Maltese cave. Calpyso's Cave, while now mostly collapsed, is supposedly the cave mentioned in Homer's famous tale of "the Odyssey".

Unfortunately, access to the cave is forbidden. However, travelers will find an epic viewpoint right above it, which is also one of the best spots in Gozo!

Comino Sunset Viewpoints

19. The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is perhaps one of the most beautiful natural wonders in Europe. Picture crystal clear turquoise water dropping into a deep blue and edged by orange and white limestone– a landscape photographer's dream!

The Blue Lagoon and the nearby Crystal Lagoon are great places to swim but are also one of the most unique sunset locations on Comino. Either book an evening sunset cruise to the lagoon or take the short walk up to the islet view just above it and watch the sun light up the translucent waters.

Blue Lagoon Area two

20. Santa Marija Caves

The Santa Marija caves are another highlight attraction on Comino, and quite an amazing place to photograph the Maltese sunset.

The best way to access the caves is from the sea, either by kayak or on an island boat trip. However, it's also possible to enter the cave from the land by taking the short coastal walking track from Santa Maria Beach.

Alternatively, hike up to the top of the caves to Ġebel Comino, the highest point on the island for one of the most unique sunset vantage points!

21. Saint Mary's Tower & Lantern Point

On Comino's southernmost point lies the Saint Mary's Tower, a historic fortified watchtower offering outstanding views over the entire Maltese archipelago.

Travelers can reach this point by hiking up the limestone cliffs from the Blue Lagoon. If you do, make sure to walk out to Lantern Point, another top Malta sunset spot reaching far out into the Gozo Channel.

Your ultimate guide to the best Malta beaches from the main island, Comino, and Gozo.

With more than 300 days of sunshine per year, the Maltese islands are officially Europe’s sunniest country!

Combine this great weather with beautiful beaches, secluded rocky coves, and the crystal clear, Mediterranean Sea, and you’ve got yourself the ideal seaside vacation spot!

In this comprehensive guide, I’ll reveal the 35 best beaches in Malta, from Mellieha Bay on the main island to the far-flung golden sands of Ramla Bay on Gozo! If you scroll to the bottom of this post, I’ve also included a useful beach map to help you find your way around the coast!

Beautiful Sandy Beaches on Malta Island

1. Golden Bay Beach

Famous for its golden red sands and crystal clear water, Golden Bay is up there with one of the most popular beaches in Malta!

Located on the northwest region of the main island, this beach is also well-known for its water sports activities and incredible seaside resort, the Radisson Blue Resort– one of the best places to stay in Malta.

Car Rentals in Malta

The best way to experience both Malta and Gozo islands is to rent your own car! I recommend booking well in advance using price comparison sites like DiscoverCars if traveling in the busy summer season.

2. Għajn Tuffieħa Beach (Riviera Beach)

Situated just south of Golden Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa Beach is another sandy beach protected by a rocky headland. Here, you’ll find shallow waters which are great for swimming with kids.

While by no means a secluded hidden gem (more of these below), Għajn Tuffieħa is often much less crowded than Golden Bay.

Additionally, travelers will find a few walking tracks just above the sandy shores. The best one winds up to a View Point on the Il-Qarraba headland, providing spectacular views of the transparent waters of the Mediterranean.

Ghajn Tuffieha Beach in Malta

3. Gnejna Beach

Gnejna Bay holds another excellent sandy beach known for water sports and unique rocky geological formations.

This is a great option for those looking to do some kayaking, as just around the headland you’ll find some spectacular sea caves, known as Ta’ Marija Cave.

Gnejna beach in Malta

4. Mellieħa Bay (Għadira Bay)

Mellieħa Bay is one of the most popular beaches in the north of Malta. That’s because Mellieħa Bay is Malta’s longest sandy beach, with peaceful, shallow waters that are very safe for young children.

This region is also one of the best areas to stay in Malta, with some of the best seaside resorts and beach clubs located in this surrounding area of Għadira Bay.

Mellieha Beach in North Malta

5. Armier Bay Beach

Moving further north of Malta and we’ll discover some of the best secluded beaches on the island. Armier Bay Beach and Little Armier Beach are two beautiful protected coves on Malta’s northeast tip providing soft sands and clear water for swimming.

This is a popular spot for those looking to escape the crowds at some of Malta’s more popular beaches like Mellieħa Beach and Golden Bay. Furthermore, kayak rental stalls often operate on the beach here, which is perfect for exploring the rocky north.

Armier Bay in Malta

6. Paradise Bay Beach

The northern peninsula of Malta is where you will find the Cirkewwa Passenger Terminal for the Gozo Channel Ferry. While it seems contradictory, one of Malta’s most beautiful beaches is tucked just around the corner from this terminal!

Paradise Bay Beach is an incredibly beautiful bay that is perfect for swimming and snorkeling in scenic natural surroundings. In fact, the beach is so tranquil that you’ll likely forget that you’re right next to a ferry terminal!

Paradise Bay Beach in Malta

7. Pretty Bay Beach

Another stunning beach with surprising surroundings is Pretty Bay beach near Il-Bajja s-Sabiha in the south of Malta.

Pretty Bay is another sandy beach with several hotels and traditional limestone buildings dotting its shores. This is a great place for sunbaking, boating, or grabbing an ice cream or espresso at the many local shops.

Pretty Beach in Malta

While this beach is undoubtedly a great place to hang out, there is the unfortunate eye-sore of the Malta freeport in direct view. Nonetheless, the clear waters and nearby amenities mean that Pretty Bay deserves a spot on this list of the best beaches in Malta.

8. St. George’s Bay

As we make our way across the main island to the lively resort and hotel areas of Paceville and St Julians we’ll find the protected little cove called St. George’s Bay.

If you’re staying at one of the many hotels or all-inclusive resorts in the area, this little beach is well worth visiting! The waters are quite deep on this side, but the long, arching coast protects it from almost all wind.

St. George's Bay in St Julian's, Malta

9. Balluta Bay Beach

Similarly to St. George’s Bay, Balluta Bay Beach is a popular little sandy beach located smack-bang in the heart of the busy St Julian’s resort area.

This is a good spot for a quick swim or, head over to the Balluta Watersports stall and rent a jet ski!

Balluta Bay in Malta

Tip: Balluta Bay & St. George’s Bay can get very busy due to their central locations. However, if you walk north around the bay in Balluta, you’ll find another small rocky beach called Exiles Beach, a small local hidden gem.

10. Malta Freeport Beach

Another unlikely location to have a beautiful white sand beach, Malta Freeport Beach is surprisingly a nice and very unique place to swim!

Situated directly opposite the busy port, this little strip of sand makes for an excellent place to stretch out on a towel or go for a quick swim away from the crowds at nearby Pretty Bay.

11. Imġiebaħ Beach

Looking for a secluded cove without tourists? A great spot is Imġiebaħ Beach, a quiet and remote beach with clear water situated on Malta’s northeast shore, not far from Mellieħa Bay.

This one is definitely more of a local’s beach, and one of my absolute favorites in Malta!

Imġiebaħ Beach, Malta

12. St. Thomas Bay Sandy Beach

St. Thomas Bay is an excellent sandy beach located between the beautiful villages of Marsaskala and the famous fishing village of Marsaxlokk on Malta’s east coast.

This is another local favorite, with a few rocky shores and sections of beautiful sandy beaches hidden to the south beneath the Munxar cliffs.

13. Ramla tal-Qortin & Ramla tal-Bir

While there are plenty of picturesque sandy beaches in the archipelago, what truly makes Malta unique is its amazing limestone shorelines. One of my favorite spots to hang out on the rocks and snorkel in deep, clear water are the two bays surrounding the former Ramla Bay Resort (currently under renovation).

These are known as Ramla tal-Bir and Ramla tal-Qortin, or the Ramla Bays of northern Malta island. Not to be confused with the famous Ramla Bay on Gozo, these two scenic bays both have a long, flat rocky shore perfect for summer picnics.

The water is also crystal clear here, and one of the best beaches in Malta for snorkeling!

Ramla Beach Malta

14. Anchor Bay (Popeye Village)

On the opposite side of Mellieħa, across the narrow, isthmus-like section of Malta’s main island lies the former film-set turned theme park known as Popeye Village of Anchor Bay.

Many tourists visit Popeye Village to see the set, but not many are aware that this is also a great place for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving! Just below the cliff to the south of the village is a sheltered area providing easy access to the water, and a great place to have a barbecue or picnic.

Anchor Bay Malta

Additionally, sunset chasers will definitely want to head to this spot during the golden hour, as this is the ideal place to catch a sunset, with spectacular views of the sun sinking below the Mediterranean horizon.

15. Qarraba Bay

Qarraba Bay is a rocky area wedged between Gnejna and Għajn Tuffieħa beaches. This spot is one of the most scenic in Malta, with unique limestone cliff formations unlike anywhere else on the island.

I recommend renting a Kayak at one of the nearby beaches and visiting this bay, which is usually only accessible from the sea. Additionally, the nearby Ta’Babu Cove and the protruding rock makes for an excellent snorkeling spot!

Qarraba Bay Malta

16. Ghar Lapsi Beach

Ghar Lapsi is a remote area in the very south of Malta’s main island. While often missed by most tourists, this location features some scenic coastal walking tracks, passing some spectacular beaches complete with sea caves and clear blue waters.

Ghar Lapsi Beach in Malta

17. Zurrieq Valley Sea Inlet

While most tourists will visit Wied iz-Zurrieq for the opportunity to explore the incredible Blue Grotto, the tiny rocky inlet near the Blue Grotto boat service is also a spectacular place to swim in Malta.

These rocky shores are very picturesque, with sharp drops into deep water, making for a great cliff jumping spot. Additionally, scuba divers will not want to miss the nearby Um El-Faroud wreck, which is one of the best wreck dive sites in Malta.

Zurrieq Valley Sea Inlet

18. Il-Kalanka

Next up is my favorite rocky beach in Malta, the pristine Il-Kalanka bay near Marsaxlokk in eastern Malta. This one is situated near the very end of Il-Kalanka point, near the lighthouse.

This bay is one of the most beautiful beaches in Malta, complete with deep, calm water to jump in straight from the limestone rocks. Furthermore, there are steel ladders fixed around the bay, making for easy access and a lot of fun!

Il Kalanka Beach in Malta

19. St. Peter’s Pool

Malta is renowned for its spectacular natural pools. One of the very best is found just north of Il-Kalanka beach and is known as St. Peter’s Pool. This is a horseshoe-shaped natural swimming pool with deep, crystal-clear water.

Many tourists and locals will head down to this pool in the summer months to relax and jump off the limestone rocks into the pool. If you’re up for some fun and adventure, St. Peter’s Pool is a great place to visit on your Malta beach-hopping itinerary.

St Peter's Pool in Malta

20. Il-Ħofra l-Kbira & Ta Kalanka Sea Cave

Heading north from Kalanka Point, on the small peninsula located between Marsaxlokk and St. Thomas Bay is a secluded rocky beach that is very little-known by tourists.

Accessible only via a single road leading out to the headland, here you’ll discover an incredible rocky beach complete with a large sea cave, providing excellent shelter during the hot summer days on Malta island.

Malta sea cave beach

21. Coral Lagoon

In terms of hidden gems, they don’t get much better than the Coral Lagoon. Appropriately named, this collapsed sea cave is a unique geological natural pool etched into the limestone cliffs on Malta’s northern point.

You’ll need a kayak or boat to access this one, but once inside you’ll discover one of the most tranquil places in Malta. The lagoon is filled with azure water and corals, and is deep enough to swim and snorkel.

Coral Lagoon

22. Qawra Point Beach

Travelers staying in the buzzling Buġibba area will certainly want to add Qawra Point to their list of beaches to visit in Malta.

This rocky coastline is hidden at the tip of the bay, just beneath the famous Cafe del Mar beach bar. There’s plenty of space to relax here, and plenty of access to the deep bay.

Qawra Point in Malta

23. Buġibba Perched Beach

The main beach in Buġibba is really a sandy one, but the sand is artificial, placed on a beautiful rocky shoreline lined with palm trees and resorts. This beach is quite busy but is a great place to swim and lounge beneath a sun umbrella with a cocktail.

Buggiba Beach

24. Mistra Bay

Across the bay from Buġibba is a quiet, rocky coastline area known as Mistra. Mistra Bay Beach, while certainly not as vibrant as its immediate neighbors, it provides a tranquil place to relax or rent a kayak from.

Amazing Beaches on Comino Island

25. Blue Lagoon

Comino’s Blue Lagoon is Malta’s most notable natural attraction. Picture iconic orange limestone cliffs dropping into some of the clearest waters you’ve ever seen.

Located on the smallest island, Comino, and only via a boat trip from Malta or Gozo, Blue Lagoon also has one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the country! One of the best ways to get to the Blue Lagoon is to book the popular Blue Lagoon & Comino Caves trip, which is great value for money.

Blue lagoon in Malta

26. Crystal Lagoon

While not as famous or well-known as the Blue Lagoon, Comino’s Crystal Lagoon is arguably just as beautiful. This picturesque bay is situated on the southwest corner of the tiny island and is often missed by tourists.

Here, you’ll discover a deep bay with crystal clear waters surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. There’s also a small pebble beach at the edge of the bay, providing a great place to relax as well.

Malta Crystal Lagoon

27. St Niklaw Bay

Travelers taking the ferry or boat trip to the Blue Lagoon will likely soon realize just how busy this place gets. If you’re looking for a Malta beach to escape the crowds from on Comino, take the short island walking trail to St. Niklaw Bay, just a few hundred meters from the Blue Lagoon.

This bay has a small sandy beach with turquoise waters– great for swimming or snorkeling!

Saint Niklaw Bay on Comino Island, Malta

28. Santa Maria Bay

Besides the Blue Lagoon, Santa Maria Bay (Santa Marija Bay) is the most popular beach on Comino Island. The waters here are quite shallow, with a long stretch of white sand lining its shores.

The color of the water in this bay is unbelievably blue, providing excellent conditions for snorkeling. Additionally, visitors will have the option of taking a short walk over to the Santa Maria Caves, which are a must-visit attraction on Comino!

Santa Maria Beach in Malta

Top Beaches on Gozo Island

29. Ħondoq ir-Rummien

Starting directly across the channel from Comino over to Malta’s sister island; Gozo we have the picturesque and compact beach named Hondoq Bay (Ħondoq ir-Rummien Bay).

This is a very small beach with soft sands, protected by rocky outcrops on either side. Furthermore, there are several water sports companies operating here, so you have the option of water skiing, kayaking, or renting a SUP!

Hondoq Bay in Malta

30. Ramla Beach (Ramla Bay)

Perhaps one of the most famous beaches in Malta, Ramla Bay Beach is a spectacular stretch of red sand overlooking the northern shores of Gozo Island.

Similarly to Mellieħa on the main island, the shallow water here makes it the perfect place for water sports or for enjoying a day at the beach with the family.

Additionally, Ramla Bay is known for its adjacent caves, Calypso’s Cave, and the spectacular viewpoint cave called Tal-Mixta Cave– go check them out!

31. Wied Il-Għasri

My personal favorite beach on Gozo Island, Malta is Wied Il-Għasri. This is one of the most scenic rocky inlets in the Maltese Islands and features a minuscule sandy beach entering into a snaking river-like canyon leading to the Mediterranean Sea in the north.

The Wied il Ghasri cove also contains several surrounding underwater caves, which makes it a popular spot for scuba divers and snorkelers.

Wied Il Ghasri Bay on Gozo Island, Malta

32. Inland Sea

The Inland Sea might not appear on all lists of Malta’s best beaches, but I’d say it’s one of the most unique! This is a magnificent natural saltwater lagoon situated in Dwejra Bay on the island of Gozo’s rugged west.

This shallow semi-circular lagoon is lined by a thin, pebble beach and is often dotted with small fishing boats laying anchor during rough seas.

Inland Sea Beach on Gozo Island

33. The Blue Hole

Malta’s Blue Hole is another spectacular rock formation right next to the famous Inland Sea in Dwejra Bay (Gozo).

While not a traditional beach, it is a great place to swim and snorkel, as this awesome vertical underwater tunnel is filled with crystal clear water! This is also located right beneath the former Azure Window!

Blue Hole in Malta

34. Xlendi Beach

Xlendi Beach in Gozo’s lively Xlendi township is an excellent place to visit if you’re chasing beach bars, caves, and an overall chill vibe.

While the beach here is very small, travelers will want to check out the cliffside walking trails leading to a nearby cave and cliff-jumping spot! Afterward, go check out the nearby salt pans or grab a drink at one of the many seaside bars.

Xlendi Beach in Malta

35. Mġarr ix-Xini

Looking to get off the beaten path on your Gozo beach hopping itinerary? If you’re visiting during the high season, make sure you include a visit to Mġarr ix-Xini.

This is a sheltered bay similar to Wied Il-Għasri but attracts a fraction of the tourists. Due to the high, fjord-like cliffs, this bay is usually very sheltered, even during bad weather.

Furthermore, beachgoers in Malta can enjoy the small pebble strand or the many flat rocks around it, providing a great place to sit down with friends and family.

Malta Accommodation Guide – Where to Stay Near the Beach

While visitors will find hotels and resorts scattered all over Malta’s islands, the most popular neighborhoods to base yourself in Malta include Valletta, Sliema & St Julian’s, Mellieħa Bay, and Gozo Island.

Travelers also have a broad variety of accommodation types, from 5-star resorts to traditional terraced boutique hotels. To save you time searching, below are the four best accommodation picks for Malta, based on location, reviews, and my personal experience.

  • St Julian’s & Sliema Area: The Hilton
This is Malta’s premiere resort, located at the heart of the picturesque Portomaso Marina. This is a great pick if you’re trying to balance great location with utmost luxury.
  • Valletta: Iniala Harbour House
Perched atop Valletta’s stunning St Barbara Bastion, this incredible boutique experience is well-regarded as one of the best accommodation options in Malta. The experience offers stunning views of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities from traditional Maltese balconies.
  • Mellieħadb Seabank Resort
The db Seabank is well-regarded as the best resort in the calmer Mellieħa area. Situated just feet from the white sandy shores of Malta’s longest beach, this complete all-inclusive hotel offers features five restaurants, a fitness center, a spa, multiple pools, and even a bowling alley!
  • GozoQuaint Boutique Hotel (Nadur)
Accommodation on Malta’s quieter sister island should reflect its more peaceful and traditional ambiance. This beautifully renovated boutique hotel is situated directly beside the Nadur Parish Church, with spacious balcony terraces looking over the town square.

Travel tip: Accommodation in Malta sells out quickly, especially for the summer vacation period. This is a location where you do not want to book at the last minute!

Useful Beach Resources for Malta

Below are some useful resources that’ll serve you well as you explore the spectacular beaches in Malta, Gozo, and Comino!

The Blue Flag Beaches in Malta

This flag system is one of the world’s most recognized voluntary awards for beaches, awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to beaches that meet environmental standards. There are several blue flag beaches in Malta, including

  • Mellieħa Bay
  • St George’s Bay
  • Qawra Bay
  • Golden Bay
  • Paradise Bay
  • Ghajn Tuffieha
  • Ramla Bay (the beach in Gozo)
  • Hondoq ir-Rummien

How to get to the Beaches in Malta

By far, the best way to explore the Maltese islands is to rent a car. However, during the busy summer months, cars can sell out quickly. I recommend comparing prices across dealerships in St Julian, Mellieħa, and the International Airport on a comparison site like DiscoverCars.

Alternatively, you can always use Malta’s well-connected public transport bus network– just plan ahead for the return trip!

Common Jellyfish

Due to rising sea levels in the southern Mediterranean, Malta suffers from a growing jellyfish problem.

Luckily, these stingers are not dangerous, but some regular culprits like the Mauve Stinger can leave a slight burn.

Luckily, there is a useful map that tourists can check out showing the best beaches in Malta to avoid jellies, based on weather conditions like wind and waves. Additionally, this map will show information about rough weather and give advice on the best beaches to visit during the summer months in Malta.

A complete guide to the colorful Maltese fishing village of Marsaxlokk, Malta.

Marsaxlokk Bay is one of Malta’s most famous villages. Known for its colorful traditional fishing boats and lively Sunday market, this is certainly one of the best places to visit in the Maltese Islands if you’re looking for rich culture and amazing photography opportunities.

In this guide, I’ll break down everything you need to know about visiting Marsaxlokk, Malta, and give you tips on 8 awesome things to do here!

Traditional fishing boat in Marsaxlokk, Malta

About Marsaxlokk - Malta's Colorful Fishing Village

Marsaxlokk Village is located in the south eastern region of Malta, not far from the international airport.

The Port of Marsaxlokk is well-protected by the opposing headland known as Delimara Point and therefore serves as the ideal location for a fishing fleet. In fact, this traditional fishing village has been used as a port by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and the Order of Saint John.

Today, the colorful village accommodates a traditional Maltese fishing fleet. These boats are called luzzu, with the tradition of these boats dating back to the early 20th century. They are the icon of Malta, and if you want to see these beautifully designed boats, you'll want to visit Marsaxlokk!

There is good tourism infrastructure in this village, with many visitors coming from all over the Maltese Islands every weekend to see the Marsaxlokk open market and explore the nearby beaches and scenic coves.

Did you know? While it is a mouthful, the name Marsaxlokk is a Maltese word that means "harbor" (marsa) with "southeasterly wind" (xlokk). The correct way to pronounce it is "mar-sa-shlock".

How to Get to Marsaxlokk

There are three main ways to get to Marsaxlokk.

  1. Visit Marsaxlokk on an organized day trip
  2. Rent a car and drive to Marsaxlokk
  3. Use the public transport network

The best option will depend on where you are staying in Malta and how you choose to explore the islands. Below I'll break down each option for getting here.

Option 1: Marsaxlokk Day Trip

To make the most of your Malta sightseeing days, a great option is to book the Malta highlights tour, which includes a visit to Marsaxlokk village, as well as:

  • Fortified City of Mdina - the old capital of Malta
  • Dingli Cliffs viewpoint - the highest point in Malta
  • Catacombs in Rabat
  • Artisan Village
Mdina

This tour includes hotel pickup from all over Malta, including Valletta, Mellieha, or Sliema/St Julians.

It's possible to book this tour online in advance. However, it is a small-group tour and tickets can sell out quickly, especially during the peak summer season and on Sundays, when everyone wants to visit the market!

Marsaxlokk Village in Malta

Option 2: Self Drive

Independent travelers will love Malta! Renting a car is very easy and this enables access to all of the best attractions and of course, the lesser-known hidden gems!

Expect a 25-minute drive from Valletta, 30 minutes from Sliema or Paceville, and about 45 minutes to an hour from Mellieha Bay.

The final leg of the drive follows the Triq Marsaxlokk road, descending steadily from a hilly landscape into the protected seaside village. There is a huge parking lot once you arrive next to the town's football field. It's marked on Google Maps as "Public Parking Space".

Wied Il Ghasri Bay, Gozo

Car Rentals in Malta

The best way to experience both Malta and Gozo islands is to rent your own car! I recommend booking well in advance using price comparison sites like DiscoverCars if traveling in the busy summer season.

Option 3: Public Transport

The island of Malta is well-connected by a network of cheap and effective bus routes.

To get to Marsaxlokk, you'll want to jump on bus #81, stopping directly at Marsaxlokk village. This route departs from Valletta and takes approximately 40 minutes. Tourists staying in the village can also take bus #119 straight from the airport.

If you're staying in other areas of the island, the best choice is to take a bus or taxi to Valletta first, as there are no other connections to Marsaxlokk from places like St Pauls Bay or Mellieha.

Travel tip: There is also a very affordable Malta hop-on-hop-off bus which includes a stop at Mdina, Three Cities, the Blue Grotto Caves, and Marsaxlokk village.

8 Best Things to do in Marsaxlokk Malta

1. The Marsaxlokk Market

The Marsaxlokk Open Market is a fresh fish market open every single Sunday in Marsaxlokk Harbour. This is quite a popular tourist attraction, with travelers from all over the archipelago visiting on the weekends to purchase fresh fish and seafood, or just to experience the unique seaside culture.

The market is located on the waterfront in the bay, with several undercover market stalls set up for the occasion.

Additionally, tourists will also be able to purchase fresh produce and souvenirs here, since the market usually contains more than just fish these days. You'll also find plenty of great restaurants serving a variety of food around the bay as well, making for a great day out!

2. Photograph the Colorful Maltese Fishing Boats (luzzu)

The main reason I wanted to visit the Marsaxlokk village was for an opportunity to photograph the traditional Maltese fishing boats - the colorful luzzu's.

As soon as you arrive in this picturesque town, you'll see them either docked to the port or moored all over the bay. All of these boats are part of active fishing fleets, with local fishermen still using them today to haul in their catch.

I recommend walking down to the market street to get some close-up views of these Maltese cultural icons.

3. Explore the Marsaxlokk Beaches

While the main attractions in Marsaxlokk are the markets and colorful fishing boats, there are many more worthwhile places to visit nearby. In fact, the village has two of its own sandy beaches, namely Ballut ta' Marsaxlokk, and Marsaxlokk Strand.

These are two great places to have a swim. However, the natural ambiance is disrupted slightly by the unsightly Malta Freeport in the distance. Alternatively, there are some better beaches to explore nearby (read on below).

4. The Marsaxlokk Parish Church

Of course, being a Maltese village, you're going to find a famous church in Marsaxlokk. This one is called the Parish Church of Our Lady of Pompei, or Santwarju tal-Madonna ta’ Pompei in Maltese.

This is a 19th-century Roman Catholic Parish church located in the main square of Marsaxlokk village. Admittedly, there are many more beautiful churches in other villages, but this one is worth taking a look inside nonetheless!

5. Malta Coastal Mountain Bike Adventure from Marsaxlokk

Perhaps the funnest and most adventurous thing to do in Marsaxlokk is to go on a mountain bike trip. When I visited the village, I met up with the guys from MC Adventure to go on a mountain bike trip up the nearby Munxar Cliffs from Marsaxlokk.

This route follows the coast north from the fishing village to the neighboring village of Marsaskala and all the way up to the remote Tal-Inwadar National Park. Along the way, you'll pass some beautiful cliffs and stunning beaches before looping back to the Marsaxlokk parking lot.

6. Visit Nearby St Peters Pool

One of my favorite places to take a dip in Malta is the beautiful St Peter's Pool, located on Delimara Point near Marsaxlokk. This is an awesome secluded cove with a deep pool, great for swimming and cliff jumping!

It's possible to walk here from Marsaxlokk harbour, following a scenic coastal route for approximately 45 minutes. If you've got your own car, then you can park your car at the dedicated parking area.

7. Eat at the Marsaxlokk Restaurants

This quaint Maltese fishing village is the perfect place to grab lunch or dinner by the water. There are several great restaurants here, mostly serving delicious seafood meals. Some of the best restaurants and cafes in Maraxlokk are:

  • Roots Restaurant - traditional restaurant with a lively atmosphere in Marsaxlokk harbour
  • T'Annamari Restaurant - serving traditional Maltese food
  • Shichiria - Japanese restaurant serving the freshest seafood in Malta
  • La Nostra Padrona - delicious Maltese food with outdoor seating.

8. Visit Il-Kalanka Beach & Lighthouse

Those looking for interesting things to do in Marsaxlokk should certainly make their way over to Il-Kalanka point. There are some beautiful beaches here, including the famous Il-Kalanka bay, a rocky cove with a sandy shore, and crystal-clear water for swimming.

At the very end of Delimara Point is the Il-Kalanka Lighthouse, a spectacular place to sit and enjoy the sunset!

Also, if you head across from Il-Kalanka Beach, you'll discover Fort Delimara, a polygonal fort built in 1876 by the British.

  • National Museum of Archaeology - my personal favorite museum exhibiting some of the world's oldest archeological findings from as far back as 4000 BCE!
  • National Museum of Fine Arts - Nicknamed MUŻA, this art exhibition contains some excellent collections from Maltese & foreign artists.

2. Boat Trip to Comino Island (Blue Lagoon)

If there's one thing you don't miss while traveling in Malta, it's the magical Blue Lagoon on Comino Island.

Comino is the smallest island in the Maltese archipelago, and in my opinion, the most beautiful! Here, you can discover amazing clear-water lagoons for swimming and snorkeling, as well as some magical sea caves.

Unfortunately, there are no direct public transport options from Valletta. However, a budget tip is to book an island-hopping tour to Comino online and take a bus or private transport to Bugibba Harbour.

Alternatively, you can also book a private Comino Island tour with Outdoor Explorers (my favorite tour company in Malta), which also includes a stop at the Crystal Lagoon.

3. Upper Barrakka Gardens

The Upper Barrakka Gardens are a public garden offering arguably the best views in the fortified city over its famous Grand Harbour and Fort St. Angelo in the Mediterranean Sea.

View at Upper Barrakka Gardens over Grand Harbour, Valletta

You'll find the gardens located on the upper sections of St Peter & Paul Bastion near Castille Place. The Knights of St John constructed these gardens as early as 1661, serving as private gardens and exercise grounds.

If you're looking for the best place in Valletta to snap some holiday photos, this is the spot!

4. Barrakka Lift & Lower Barrakka Gardens

The Lower Barrakka Gardens is a twin of the Upper Gardens and feature a great view of the Grand Harbour and breakwater from the waterfront.

Connecting the Upper Gardens to the level of the Lower Barrakka Gardens is the Upper Barrakka Lift, which is another notable attraction in Valletta in itself. The city built this architecturally stunning lift in 2012 to replace the previous lift, operating between the gardens from 1905 to 1973.

The price is one euro for a return ride, which is great if you are touring Valletta and want to move between the main merchant street to the waterfront.

5. Basilica of our Lady of Mount Carmel

The Basicila of our Lady of Mount Carmel (Bażilika Santwarju tal-Madonna tal-Karmnu in Maltese), is a Carmelite Roman Catholic basilica located in the heart of Valletta.

This is one of the main churches in Malta, built with a classic dome top that is very impressive when viewed from the inside.

You'll find this basilica just around the corner from Republic Square, very close to other churches like St. Paul's Cathedral.

6. Epic Malta Highlights Tour

Valletta is an excellent place to base yourself in Malta if you are looking to go on an epic day trip!

One of the best bookable tours on the island of Malta is the Mdina & Malta Highlights Tour, departing from Valletta every day.

Mdina Malta

This tour includes:

  • Visit Mdina - The former capital of Malta
  • St. Cataldus Catacombs (Rabat)
  • Dingli Cliffs - The highest point in Malta
  • Artisan Village
Mdina Gate in Malta

7. Tritons Fountain

The Triton's Fountain is located at the entrance to the fortified city of Valletta (City Gate) and will likely be the first attraction you see. That's why it's commonly used as a meeting point or as a base for tours going to all the other fun things to do and see in Valletta.

As a country shrouded in history, the Triton Fountain is one of the country's most famous modernist landmarks, showcasing three bronze Tritons supporting a large basin bowl.

8. Take a Day Trip to Gozo

A trip to Malta simply isn't complete without visiting the beautiful and more relaxed sister island of Gozo.

This is my favorite island in the Maltese Archipelago and is well-known internationally for its beautiful beaches, impressive geological formations, and laid-back atmosphere.

Travelers short on time and visiting Valletta for a few days can book an awesome full-day Jeep tour of Gozo visiting some of the best sites with a guide.

Alternatively, to get to Gozo from Valletta, there is now a new fast ferry taking just 45 minutes from the Grand Harbour to the Mġarr ferry terminal. Note when you arrive on Gozo you will need to rely on the public transport system to get around or rent a car or ATV (quad bike) near the harbor.

I visited Gozo chasing adventure, and I certainly found it here, and I'm sure you will too.

Rock Climbing on Gozo

9. Valletta Highlights Walking Tour

Valletta is a very walkable city, but the best way to see it is with a local guide, who'll not only point out the most historical monuments and cultural icons but also take you to the tastiest hidden gem street food vendors in Valletta!

The famous Valletta Walking Tour is one of the most popular in the country and is highly recommended!

The Valletta Street Food and Culture Walking Tour is one of the best ways to experience all of the best highlights & attractions in the city and taste local street food like pastizzi.

10. Go Beach Hopping

Malta is hard to beat when it comes to seaside Mediterranean destinations. In fact, its beaches are some of the most beautiful in Europe, with a large variety from soft, sandy shores to secluded rocky coves.

Golden Bay Beach on Malta

While there are a few places to swim in Valletta (more information below), I recommend renting a car or hopping on the cost-effective and reliable bus network and checking out some of the top beaches such as:

The ultimate Malta experience should always include at least a few beaches! Valletta is a good base to explore the coast since there is always a bus back to the capital!

Car Rentals in Malta

The best way to experience both Malta and Gozo islands is to rent your own car! I recommend booking well in advance using price comparison sites like DiscoverCars if traveling in the busy summer season.

11. Grandmaster's Palace (St George Square)

The Grandmaster's Palace in St George Square is one of the most significant monuments and places of interest in Valletta.

The Grand Masters built this amazing palace between the 16th and 18th centuries, serving as the main palace for the Order of St. John, the rulers of Malta from 1530 to 1798. Even today, this centrally-located palace houses the office of Malta's president.

Visitors will likely walk past The Palace on their exploration of the city even if you don't plan it!

12. Traditional Dgħajsa Grand Harbour Boat to the Three Cities

The Three Cities of Malta (Birgu, Senglea, Cospicua) are historical neighborhoods with beautiful narrow streets located across the Grand Harbour from Valletta. Here, you'll discover a place full of history, culture, and must-visit sites such as Fort St. Angelo.

Traditional boats in Malta Grand Harbour

The best (and cheapest) way to visit the Three Cities is to take a traditional luzzu or dgħajsa ferry across the harbour from Valletta's waterfront.

You can book a Three Cities tour directly from Valletta for around 35 euros, one of my top recommendations for things to do in the city!

Looking to cut out all the hassle of organizing a day trip to the Three Cities on your own? Book this top-rated 3 cities tour which includes a traditional luzzu or dgħajsa harbour ferry and a walking tour run by a knowledgeable local guide.

13. Lascaris War Rooms

Accessible via the Upper Barrakka Gardens, the Lascaris War Rooms are a series of complex underground tunnels and war chambers that visitors are able to visit in Valletta.

This was where the Maltese coordinated their war efforts to defend the island during World War II but is now open as a museum. Tickets cost roughly 14 euros for adults.

14. The Saluting Battery

When traveling to Valletta, make sure to go and watch the Saluting Battery, a daily artillery battery display originating from the 16th century. This is the oldest of its kind in the world and arguably the most famous as well, stemming from the times of the Order of Saint John.

The tradition of firing the canons in salute occurs twice a day, once at 10:30 am and again at 13:00 pm. Head down to the scenic rampart below the Upper Barraka Gardens to watch for free, or pay a small ticket fee and watch it unfold up close!

15. Valletta Waterfront (Grand Harbour)

One of the best things to do in Valletta is simply taking a scenic walk by the waterfront overlooking the Grand Harbour. Make your way to the eastern side of the town for great views of the Grand Harbour and Three Cities.

Or, to the west and you've got yourself views of Fort Manoel on Manoel Island, as well as the luxury seaside resorts of Sliema across the harbour.

16. St John's Co-Cathedral

St John's Co-Cathedral in the center of Valletta is going to appear on almost all lists of things to do in Valletta. That's because it is the city's primary attraction.

This magnificent Roman Catholic co-cathedral in Valletta was built by the Order of St. John between 1572 and 1577, making it one of the oldest cathedrals in Malta.

Interior of St Johns Co Cathedral in Valletta, Malta

While it looks regular from the outside, the inside is adorned in fantastic art from floor to ceiling. An adult entrance ticket will set you back €15.00, but this is well worth it. As part of the entrance ticket, visitors get an audio guide which I think is very well done.

Travel tip: walk up to the top of the cathedral near the exit for the best views of this grandiose structure.

17. Streets of Valletta - Look up and Enjoy the Balconies (Gallarija)

Did you know that the entire fortified city of Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Walking through its narrow streets and vibrant lanes makes you feel like you're taking a step back in time. One of the most notable features of these historic streets are the Gallarija ornate wooden balconies. You'll often see these painted in vibrant colors, creating a beautiful contrast against the aged Globigerina limestone bricks.

Red doors in the streets of Valletta, Malta

If you're looking for picturesque streets, make sure to visit Merchants Street, Old Bakery Street, Republic Street (great for eateries and quaint cafes), and the waterfront area near Bridge Bar.

18. Manoel Theater: One of the Oldest Theaters in Europe

Manoel Theatre or Teatru Manoel is the most significant performing arts venue in Malta. You'll find this Valletta landmark between the Casa Rocca Piccola and Paul's Cathedral.

The theater is named after the Grand Master of the Order of the Knights Hospitaller, António Manoel de Vilhena, who was the man behind its construction as early as 1731.

19. Collegiate Parish Church of Saint Paul's Shipwreck

This is yet another beautiful Parish Church in Valletta that you should add to your itinerary. This one is even older than the St John's Co-Cathedral, with the Knights building it 2-5 years earlier!

You'll find it right near the Basilica of our Lady of Mount Carmel.

20. The Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum

Fort St Elmo is a heritage building situated on the northern tip of Valletta on what's known as the Sciberras Peninsula.

This fort dates back to the times of the Order of Saint John when they successfully held off the Ottoman armada. However, as you see it today it's mostly a representation of the extensive upgrades during the British rule.

This fort is also the site of the National War Museum. Visiting this museum is the best way to soak up the military history of the island nation.

21. National Library

Also known as Bibliotheca, the National Library of Malta is yet another central historical site worth adding to your Valletta itinerary.

This historical building is located in the heart of the city near Republic Square. Locals recognize this as one of the cultural icons of the Maltese Islands, holding many literary treasures rich in history and spanning from medieval times!

Bibliotecha in Malta (National Library Valletta)

22. Casa Rocca Piccola

This 16th-century private palace is one of the most magnificent buildings in Valletta. This one is definitely a unique attraction, as it is a family home that allows travelers to open and tour!

Included in a visit to this palace is a guided or audio tour, to teach you all about this palace. Unfortunately, visitation was temporarily closed during my visit so I wasn't able to get any photos for you guys.

23. Nenu the Artisan Baker

After exploring all the landmarks and attractions in Valletta, I bet you're feeling a little hungry!

Nenu the Artisan Baker is one of the most famous traditional Maltese restaurants in the country and one that I highly recommend! It's located very centrally in the city and accessible on foot from the main street.

The bread here is cooked in a traditional, decades-old Maltese oven sporting a golden Maltese cross. This is a sight to see in itself, ask the chef if you can take a peak!

25. Game of Thrones Sightseeing

Did you know that Malta was the original filming location for the HBO series Game of Thrones?

If you're a fan like me, you'll want to check out some of the famous scenes filmed in Valletta.

These include:

  1. Fort Manoel
  2. Fort Ricasoli
  3. Eagle Street

26. Visit Malta's Blue Grotto

Regular readers of this blog will know that I usually stick to adventure travel. So, it goes without saying that there'll at least be one epic natural attraction on this list of things to do!

When in Malta, definitely make your way to the Blue Grotto. This is one of the most beautiful sea caves I've ever seen, and a boat trip inside is very cheap! Full information on how to get to the cave from Valletta is available in my Blue Grotto guide.

Looking for more Malta travel guides and inspiration? Below are my most comprehensive blog posts that will serve as a great free resource for your trip.

1. Chill on Mellieha Beach

Of course, one of the biggest draws to Mellieha is its wide, sandy sheltered bay with shallow waters, making it great for swimming and water sports.

Mellieha Bay Beach makes up the entire Għadira Bay, which is lined with sea sunbeds and parasols, costing 5 euros each. While it can be a popular beach during the summer months, it is Malta’s longest sandy beach, so there’s always enough space to find a spot by yourself if you need to.

Additionally, during the peak season, there’s even a water theme park here, which is a fun activity in Mellieha that the kids won’t want to miss!

2. Day Trip to Gozo Island

Staying in Mellieha Bay is a great option as you’ll be much closer to Malta’s sister island of Gozo and of course, the natural wonder of Comino and its amazing caves and lagoons.

Travelers can book this epic private tour with Outdoor Explorers on Get Your Guide. This is my favorite tour company in Malta and the guys I explored Comino with. This is a private boat tour and includes:

Santa Marija Caves, Comino Island, Malta

Visiting the sister islands is an absolute must when traveling in Malta! If you’d prefer to visit independently, you can also make your way to the Gozo ferry port in Ċirkewwa and take the Gozo Channel Ferry to Mgarr on Gozo.

Just keep in mind that many of the best locations to visit are only accessible by boat ride!

3. Go Scuba Diving With Orange Shark Divers

My favorite dive shop in Malta is located in the heart of Mellieha– Orange Shark Divers. These guys are easily the friendliest and most professional shop in the archipelago and run excellent dive trips on Comino and Gozo.

My favorite dive was the P31 Wreck (Patrol Boat 31). This is a very accessible wreck dive located just a short boat ride near Comino. Other dive sites worth checking out include:

Scuba diving the P31 wreck in Malta

4. Blue Lagoon Boat Trip on Comino

The Blue Lagoon is easily the most popular major tourist attraction in Malta. Located on the nearby island of Comino, this attraction features an other-wordly sheltered lagoon that is great for swimming, snorkeling, and cave exploring.

Getting to the Blue Lagoon is very easy from Mellieha since you’ll be much closer to the channel than tourists staying in Valletta or St Julians.

I recommend this awesome Blue Lagoon tour, which also visits Crystal Lagoon and some highlights on Gozo on an epic day trip from Mellieha Bay.

5. Go Check out Popeye Village

The Popeye Village is a film set turned theme park. Located in the nearby Anchor Bay, the Popeye Village is a very popular attraction close to Mellieha Bay and one that’s great for families.

This was the real set used as Sweethaven Village in the 1980 film starring Robin Williams. And, today visitors can explore this open-air museum and check out some of the attractions like Popeye’s Cabin or the many food outlets.

Additionally, you’ll find one of my favorite viewpoints here in Anchor Bay overlooking Popeye Village. Definitely head over here for sunset if you’re looking for things to do in Mellieha Bay during the late evening.

6. Beach Hopping Near Mellieha

One of the main reasons tourists visit Malta is to experience their amazing soft sand beaches and crystal-clear water coves.

Mellieha is located in an excellent region of Malta for beach-hopping, with several popular beaches and secluded strands just a short distance away.

Some of my favorite sandy beaches near Mellieha Bay include:

  • Armier Bay Beach – shallow bay that is great for snorkeling
  • Little Armier Bay – scenic cove just north of Mellieha Bay
  • Paradise Bay Beach – beautiful beach tucked away behind the ferry terminal
  • Imġiebaħ Beach – secluded beach away from other tourists

7. Stay in an All-Inclusive Beach Resort

Of course, Mellieha is an excellent Maltese destination to stay if you’re looking for luxury and exclusivity!

One of the best all-inclusive resorts in Mellieha Bay is db Seabank Resort + Spa. This luxury resort features several pools, a swim-up bar, a full spa, and even a bowling alley!

It’s also conveniently located right on the water’s edge near Mellieha Beach. So, you can walk out from your buffet breakfast and take a dip in the Mediterranean Sea.

8. Kayak to the Coral Lagoon

Looking for an epic hidden gem near Mellieha Bay? Don’t miss the Coral Lagoon!

This is a collapsed sea cave forming a natural, sheltered lagoon filled with turquoise water and coral reef.

This is one of the most beautiful natural sites in Malta, and adventure seekers definitely won’t want to miss it! To get here, you can walk from Coral Beach on the northeast corner of Malta. However, there is no access to the water from the top. That’s why the best option is to rent a kayak at nearby Little Armier Bay and enter the lagoon from the sea.

9. Check out the It-Torri L-Aħmar (Red Tower or St Agatha’s Tower)

From the sandy shores of the beautiful Mellieha Bay (Għadira), it’s hard to miss the striking red castle-like tower standing on the nearby hillside.

Known as Red Tower, St. Agatha’s Tower, or the It-Torri L-Aħmar in Maltese, this epic structure is strategically positioned on one of the most scenic viewpoints on the island.

From here, you’ll see the entire northern peninsula, with views of Gozo and Comino islands to the north. I recommend heading here for sunset for amazing views!

Don’t Miss: Malta’s Blue Grotto

10. Hike to Rdum il-Qammieh Viewpoint

On the other side of the narrow section from Mellieha Bay lies a remote and scenic natural sea cliff called Rdum il-Qammieh.

It’s possible to hike here from the bay, passing a radar station on the way. This is the perfect place to sit and enjoy the natural beauty away from the hustle and bustle of a busy resort town. You’ll get superb views of Malta’s rugged east coast from a high vantage point atop the 100-meter cliffs.

Secluded clear water coves near Mellieha Bay

11. Explore the WW2 Gun Posts & Air Raid Shelters

History buffs will fall in love with Malta! Not only does this archipelago contain some of the richest ancient historical treasures like the world-famous Ġgantija Temples, but it also preserves several icons from World War II.

To the northeast of Mellieha Bay, head towards the Rdum il-Qammieh cliffs, and you’ll pass several gun posts which are marked on Google Maps.

Additionally, in the center of Mellieha, visitors can tour the famous Mellieha Air Raid Shelter. Residents of Mellieha dug these underground shelters by hand during WW2 to protect themselves against enemy bombs. Today, travelers in Mellieha can take a tour of them, running 500 meters long at a depth of over 12 meters!

12. Sunset at the Chapel of Immaculate Conception

Another amazing sunset point near Mellieha Bay is the Chapel of Immaculate Conception. We visited this spot on our very first night in Malta and were treated with a magical sunset.

The Chapel of Immaculate Conception is a small chapel situated on the headland north of Għadira Bay. From here you’ll get an ideal view of the entire bay where you can admire the natural beauty from a secluded rolling cliff.

13. Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieha

At the very top of Mellieha Village, travelers will spot the Sanctuary of Our Lady Mellieha. This is a Roman Catholic Church built on top of a natural cave. Some believe that this sanctuary dates back to the medieval period but was consecrated as a church a little later on.

This is the centerpiece of Mellieha, and you’ll likely see it sitting on top of a hill from almost anywhere in the bay!

14. Walk Up to Mellieha Peak

Okay, Malta isn’t exactly known for huge dominating mountain peaks. However, this island does feature some incredible coastal cliffs.

The highest point in Mellieha is known as Mellieha Peak. If you’re feeling adventurous, walk up the terraced lots to the small coastal ridge. From here, you’ll get excellent views of the coast ranging all the way down to Popeye Village.

In fact, it’s possible to walk down to the village from here as well!

Cliffs in Malta

15. Golden Bay Beach

Golden Bay is one of the most famous beaches in Malta. Known for its soft, red sands and a long, sheltered cove filled with clear waters and dominated by rugged limestone cliffs, this one certainly is worth a visit.

While it can be quite busy, Golden Bay offers the perfect beach option on the rare occasion that the winds are blowing in from the east into Mellieha Beach.

16. Hike at Għadira Nature Reserve (Foresta 2000)

The last activity on this list of things to do in Mellieha Bay is to take a short stroll through the Għadira Nature Reserve, also called Foresta 2000. We stumbled upon this nature park accidentally while trying to find a car park on a very busy summer’s day.

But, we were glad we did! We took a long walk through the park and discovered several relaxing nature trails connecting to places like the Red Tower and the Rdum il-Qammieh viewpoint.

  • dB Seabank Resort & Spa – A huge, all-inclusive hotel with several pools, many restaurants, and an amazing spa.

About Malta's Golden bay

Golden Bay is one of Malta's most popular beaches. It's famous for its soft, red sands that emanate a golden glow during sunset in the summer months.

Many tourists and locals visit Golden Bay as is one of the best beaches for swimming on the island. Its high, rocky cliffs provide very good shelter from the winds and its long, deep bay is great for water sports like jet skiing and sea kayaking.

This beach is rated as "Blue Flag", by the FEE flag rating system, meaning it has a high level of safety and plenty of amenities.

Directly above the beach is one of Malta's best resorts– the Radisson Blue Resort, which is a great option if you want to stay somewhere out of the main tourist areas in the Maltese Islands.

Where is Golden Bay?

Golden Bay is located just a short distance from the nearby Gnejna Bay and Ghajn Tuffiha Bay on the northwest coast of Malta. The closest town is the village of Maikata, just a short drive or bus from Mellieha Bay.

The beach is located in a section known as il-Majjistral Nature Park.

Below I've pinned the exact location of Golden Bay to make it easier to find.

How to Get to Golden Bay Beach

There are three main options for reaching Golden Bay from other popular areas of Malta like Mellieha Bay, Valletta, Sliema, or St. Julian's.

1. Golden Bay by Malta Catamaran Tour

By far, the most scenic way to experience the beauty of Malta's coast is to do so from the sea.

There is one catamaran sailing tour that you can book on GetYourGuide, stopping at some of the most iconic highlights including Comino and the Blue Lagoon, the Crystal Lagoon, Popeye Village, and of course, the golden sands of Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa.

These trips depart from St. Paul's Bay and Bugibba and have nearly 2000 5-star reviews!

2. Golden Bay By Bus

The best and most convenient public transport option to Golden Bay is to take the Route 225 bus line to Għajn Tuffieħa Bus Terminus.

This bus will pass through Sliema, St Julians, Qawra, Buġibba, and St. Paul’s Bay. For those staying in Valletta, you can take the 250 or 42 bus to St. Paul's Bay, then jump on the 225 to Golden Bay.

3. Self-Drive to Golden bay

There's no doubt. Having your own rental car in Malta is going to give you the best and most flexible travel experience on the islands!

I recommend comparing prices on DiscoverCars to get a great deal across all of the dealerships on Malta and Gozo.

Once you've got your set of wheels, you'll want to drive to the pin above. Driving these roads is quite easy as it is a much quieter region compared to Valletta or Mellieha Bay.

You'll find a parking area near the beach (close to the Radisson Golden Sands hotel), as well as a second option just north of this.

Golden Bay Malta - What to Expect & This Epic Beach

We visited Golden Bay during the summer months on a particularly hot day in Malta. As a result, the beach was absolutely packed– far from the secluded beaches, you'll find in the north or on Gozo.

However, it's undeniable that this beach really is beautiful. From the top near the bus stop and car park, you'll get great views of the beach and surrounding cliffs. There's a snack bar, ice cream bar, and small cafe just a short distance from here, which is great if you want to cool down as well.

On the beach, there were loads of tourists baking in the sun and swimming in the shallow waters of the bay. While the sand is very comfortable, there are tiny pebbles closer to the water's edge.

Horse Riding at Golden Bay

The main reason we visited Golden Bay was to go on the famous horse riding activity. We had a group booking and our guides led us to some of the high cliffs just north of Golden Bay, where we passed the beautiful rocky coast for breathtaking views of the beach and the Mediterranean Sea.

From here, we could also see the famous Għajn Tuffieħa tower dominating the headland just south of the bay.

This was one of Haylea's favorite experiences on Malta, and I would certainly recommend this company.

5 Tips for Visiting Golden Bay

As promised, below are five useful tips you'll want to consider when planning your visit to the red sands of Golden Bay beach.

  1. Come early - this is a very popular beach. When we visited it was much too crowded for our liking.
  2. Hire a kayak - you can easily hire a sea kayak at Golden Bay. In good conditions, you'll want to kayak around the headland to Għajn Tuffieħa bay.
  3. Parking - if the parking lot is full, there is parking space pinned on Google maps as "Designated Street Parking"– just a 5-10 minute walk from the beach
  4. Check the weather - during westerly winds, this beach will not be so nice for swimming. Instead, you'll want to head to one of the coves on Malta's east coast.
  5. Don't swim during red flags - Malta uses a flag system to alert swimmers of dangerous conditions. Red means don't swim!

Discover the incredible secluded inlet of Wied il-Ghasri Beach on Gozo Island, Malta.

Gozo Island is full of amazing hidden gems! One of my absolute favorite spots on the island to relax and enjoy swimming in the Mediterranean Sea is the scenic, fjord-like cove of Wied il Ghasri (Wied il-Għasri).

In this quick guide, I’ll reveal everything you need to know about one of the most scenic inlets in Malta. I’ll show you exactly how to get here, what to expect, and what you can’t miss in the surrounding area.

Wied Il-Ghasri Bay and Beach on Gozo, Malta

About Wied Il Ghasri Beach

For photographers and nature lovers, Wied il-Ghasri is likely already high on your list of epic places to visit on Gozo.

The beach lies in the L-Għasri Valley and connects to the open sea via a thin, snaking cove of deep water edged by high limestone cliffs. You'll likely have seen this beautiful coastal gorge on social media or in tourism campaigns because it really is one of the most beautiful spots in Malta!

At the end of the inlet, you'll discover a picturesque, tiny pebbly beach with easy access to the water.

The Wied il Ghasri cove also contains several surrounding underwater caves, which makes it a popular spot for scuba divers (more on this below).

Where is Wied Il Ghasri Beach?

Wied il Ghasri beach is located on the very northern tip of Gozo Island, Malta. It is known as the Għasri Valley, which begins at Ta’ Dbieġi Hill and winds down through the village of l-Għasri towards the open sea on the north coast of Gozo.

There is a road leading to a short walking track that descends down to its pebbly shores. There is a decently-sized dedicated parking area just near the track. However, it's not as big or developed as you'll find at the Blue Hole or Inland Sea.

Below I've pinned the exact location to help you find it.

How to Get to Wied Il Ghasri on Gozo

Below are the three best ways to reach Wied il-Ghasri bay on Gozo.

1. Wied il-Ghasri on the Epic Gozo Quad Bike Tour

Travelers staying on the main island of Malta and looking to see the best of Gozo on a single day will definitely want to check out the Full Day Quad Tour on Get Your Guide.

You'll get your return boat transport to Gozo included, as well as a fun day of exploring the island on Quad Bike. Top sites include:

2. Rent a Car Or Quad Bike on Gozo

There are a few rental car companies on Gozo. However, generally, these offices charge much more than on the main island. Therefore, if you're looking to explore the best of Malta, I'd recommend checking availability and comparing prices using a tool like DiscoverCars.

Then, you can easily take the Gozo Channel Ferry, departing from Ċirkewwa every 45 minutes or so.

3. Via the Ta’ Ġurdan Walk

It's also possible to visit Wied Il Ghasri on the awesome 12-kilometer country walk, which starts and finishes in the village of Gharb. The trail, known as the Ta’ Ġurdan Walk, covers scenic hills and valleys, passing highlights like the St. Dimitri Chapel, Ta’ Ġurdan Lighthouse, the Ta Pinu Sanctuary, the Wied il-Mielah arch, and of course, the Wied il-Ghasri Bay.

The walk takes roughly 4-5 hours to complete and is definitely a great way to experience this beautiful region of Gozo.

Visiting Wied Il-Ghasri Beach on Gozo - What to Expect

As soon as we arrived at Wied Il Ghasri, we walked around the side of the bay to get a unique vantage point of this incredible Maltese beach.

Looking down, it seemed a bit inaccessible at first. However, there are a series of steps cut into the cliff face, which takes you directly down to the beach.

From the top of the steep cliffs, we had a great vantage point of the quiet bathing area below, as well as the head of the inlet reaching out to the open Mediterranean Sea.

The snaking gorge of Wied il-Ghasri features some of the clearest, turquoise water in Malta! We quickly sent up the drone and captured some of the images you see in this blog post. Next, we spent about an hour soaking up some rays and enjoying the relaxing ambiance of this sheltered cove.

This Gozo bay is famous for its Cathedral Cave dive site located at the start of the inlet. This is an underwater cave and features some pretty interesting swim-throughs. While we didn't dive at this site, we did walk over and take a look!

After the Beach: Go See the Saltpans

Looking for more attractions to explore after visiting Wied il-Ghasri.

Just a short walk or bike ride away you will find the famous Saltpans of Gozo (Xwejni). These are man-made salt pans, originally carved during the Roman Times as an effective method of collecting fresh sea salt. This method is still used today by dedicated families passing down the craft for centuries.

From the bay, simply head back to the unsealed road and continue along the coastal road known as Triq ix-Xwejni. Here, you'll find them all the way along the coast until you reach the seaside hamlet of Xwejni Bay.

Where to Stay on Gozo Island

Due to its small size and well-connected network of buses and roads, choosing the ideal location to stay in Gozo is less crucial than on the main island of Malta.

However, if you ask, locals will always tell you that to get the complete Gozitan experience, what's more important is picking a traditional boutique hotel over a luxury resort or modern hotel. You'll find many boutique hotels in Gozo dotted all over the island, from Nadur to Xlendi. Below are the 3 top picks.

  • Kempinski Hotel - San Lawrenz
For travelers preferring modern, 5-star luxury, the Kempinski Hotel is your best bet. This amazing hotel is located in San Lawrenz, on a 30,000m² tropical oasis. An excellent choice for larger groups and families as there are self-catering apartment options as well!

Discover Mgarr ix Xini Beach, a beautiful, narrowly snaking cove with a pristine pebble beach on the island of Gozo, Malta.

If you’re planning your adventures on Gozo, make sure to include a visit to Mgarr ix Xini Beach on Gozo’s southern coast.

This beach is definitely off the beaten path, and very few tourists ever make it here. If you’d like to explore a stunning, secluded bay that’s great for swimming, relaxing, or scuba diving, then don’t miss this one!

Secluded beach of Mgarr ix Xini on Gozo Island, Malta

About Mgarr Ix Xini Beach on Gozo Island

Mġarr ix-Xini Bay is a very narrow bay filled with deep water that is perfect for swimming. Situated in a steep-sided natural valley, this tiny pebble beach features an adjacent cleared area with steps leading to a picnic table.

Historically, this bay played an important role for the Knights of Malta, serving as a small harbor for galleys. To protect it and keep watch, there is a small watchtower built on the cliff named Mġarr ix-Xini Tower, which, dating back to the 1600s, has been restored several times.

While this spot is little-known among tourists, the bay did appear in the movie "By the Sea", starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

However, these days, it's mostly visited by Gozitan locals and a few scuba divers. Additionally, the steep cliffs of the gorge do offer some good trad routes for climbing as well.

Where is Mġarr ix-Xini Bay?

This tiny pebble beach lies within a narrow gorge close to the village of Għajnsielem and nearby Mġarr Harbour, where you'll find the Gozo ferry terminal. The bay is accessible via a sealed road running through the nearest village of Xewkija.

Other attractions in this part of Gozo include the famous Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs, Sanap Cliffs, and Xlendi Bay.

Below is a map pinning the exact location of this bay to help you find it.

How to Get to Mgarr ix Xini Bay

Currently, there are no tours that include a guided visit to this bay. However, this is probably a good thing, as it keeps the place relaxed and certainly allows it to keep its hidden gem nature.

What this means for travelers is that if you want to visit this bay, you'll need to rent your own car or quad bike.

While there are car rental offices on Gozo, the most cost-effective way to rent a car in Malta is to do so on the main island. If you're still planning your trip, I recommend comparing prices well in advance using DiscoverCars to get the best deal.

Once you've got your set of wheels, you'll want to follow the directions on your navigation map. The best way is to take the Triq l-Mġarr westbound, then follow the small side streets down to the bay. The descent can be quite narrow and steep, so if you've got a loaded 2-door hatchback, make sure you're confident you can make it back up the hill!

What to Expect at Mgarr ix Xini Beach on Gozo

We arrived at this stunning bay quite early in the morning while looking for an off the beaten path beach to swim at. We noticed that the majority of the people at Mġarr ix-Xini were locals, besides one small team of scuba diving tourists.

Mgarr Ix Xini Aerial photograph

The Beach

The beach itself is quite small, but very picturesque. There are some small shops near the waterfront, as well as a small kayak rental place. We decided to climb the cliffs on the western side of the gorge to get a better look.

I think this is one of the best beaches in Malta!

Then, we enjoyed a very relaxing swim in some of the most crystal clear water in Malta! Locals have installed a rope lined with buoys marking the safe area to swim near the beach.

Scuba Diving Sites at Mġarr ix-Xini

This location is a popular dive site at night, sloping down gently to roughly 17 meters upon reaching the Ta' Ċenċ inlet at the end of the gorge. There are two small caves here, which most dive shops only recommended to experienced divers.

Additionally, this fjord-like bay contains a weathered wreck called the MV Xlendi, which once served as a Gozo Ferry but was sunk purposely to create the artificial reef.

A complete guide to the famous Calypso’s Cave on the island of Gozo, Malta– said to be the nymph Calypso’s cave in Homer’s famous Odyssey.

Calypso’s Cave (L-ghar ta’ Calisso in Maltese) is a famous site on Gozo island appealing to both history fans and those looking for one of the absolute best viewpoints of Gozo’s famous red sand beach– the Ramla l-Ħamra Beach in Ramla Bay.

In this quick travel guide, I’ll give you a rundown of Calypso cave, including a brief history and some information on how to get here and what to expect once you arrive.

Also, at the end of this blog post, I’ll recommend another famous cave on the other end of Ramla Bay if you’re chasing even more stunning views!

About Calypso's Cave on Gozo Island

Calypso's Cave gets its name from the fact that many people believe that it is the cave featured in Homer's famous Odyssey tale (book V). In this story, the Greek Hero, Odysseus was trapped in the cave by a nymph, Calypso for seven years as a "prisoner of love". Many believe that Gozo must have been the famous island of Ogygia, in the tale of Odysseys, where the protagonist lost his ship to the rock Ogiran following a big storm.

Odysseus was promised complete immortality if he did stay in this cave. However, he managed to escape the cave and return to his wife Penelope.

Interestingly, Gozo is not the only island in the Mediterranean Sea laying claims to this story. I also visited the island of Mljet in Croatia, which also contains a cave with this story.

However, what isn't disputed, is that this cave did play a role during the times of the Knights of Malta. In fact, just below this cave are the ruins of fortifications. The knights built these here during the mid-18th century to protect against the many invading forces and sea-ward attacks.

Whether you're a fan of history and mythology or not, Calypso's cave is undoubtedly one of the most stunning viewpoints on Gozo Island. From here, you'll get expansive views across one of the island's most famous beaches, the red sands of Ramla Bay.

Where is Calypso's Cave

Calypso's Cave is located on a grassy hillside near the village of Xagħra on Gozo Island's north coast. The hill rises above Ramla Beach (Gozo's most sought-after sandy beach) but travelers can best reach it via the steep lane wrapping behind the hill.

Travelers will find this just off the Triq Ta Ghaijn Hosna road leading to the red sands of Ramla Beach.

Below I've pinned the exact location of Calypso's cave to help you find it. Once you arrive, you'll find a small parking lot with signs and a short, paved walking track to the lookout above the cave.

What to Expect at Calypso's Cave

The granite face of Calypso's Cave rises out of the grassy hillside with some small buildings located right beside it.

Once you arrive, you'll immediately notice that the entrance to the cave is blocked off. This is the result of large boulders collapsing following geological movements. Unfortunately, this means that the cave has a completely crumpled entrance, and authorities discourage exploration as it is quite dangerous. When I visited, there were some steel beams holding up the rock to prevent further erosion.

However, it is said that before the collapse, it was possible to explore the interior of Calypso's Cave. This apparently, is connected to the sea via a complex labyrinth of tunnels, which would have been awesome to explore!

With that said, in its current state, it's best to enjoy the site from afar. Instead, the viewing platform provides a great place to take in the magnificent views out to the open sea and over Gozo's spectacular northern coastline.

We spent a good hour here enjoying a snack and watching the waves roll in gently onto the red sands. Next, we decided to take some photos before heading over to some of the other highlights on the island.

Is Gozo's Calypso's Cave Closed?

Yes, unfortunately, the entrance to Calypso's Cave is closed as a result of geological movement causing huge stone boulders to collapse.

However, fans of history and Greek mythology will still appreciate this site from the adjacent viewing platform. If you're looking for the famous viewpoint cave over Ramla Bay (it's a different cave), then I'll reveal that exact location below.
