Read on for detailed summaries including the top features, pros and cons, and reasons to buy.

Cmparing shotgun microphones for video

1. JOBY Wavo Pro - The Best Shotgun Microphone for Content Creators

JOBY is the brand behind the very popular Gorillapod tripods and a company that sells high-quality equipment for content creators.

Their new range of on-camera microphones has been quite popular, especially their top-tier WAVO Pro shotgun microphone, aimed at video creators, run and gun filmmakers, and YouTubers. This is an attractive option for many as it balances price, performance, and ease of use in a portable and well-built microphone.

Key Specifications

  • Signal to Noise ratio: 96 dBA
  • Super-cardioid polarity
  • Self Noise: -76dBA (thanks to ANR)
  • Condenser microphone capsule type
  • Built-in USB-C chargeable battery
  • Aluminum & high-quality ABS plastic material
  • 0.35 lb (161 g) weight

With an excellent self-noise level, high directionality, and external audio control via the iOS or Android App (volume, output gain, EQ), this is a high-quality microphone with a nice, flat frequency response. Additionally, the microphone can record an optional -10db safe track in parallel in case of accidental clipping.

JOBY Shotgun microphone for video creators

Pros:

  1. Advanced software features like Active Noise Reduction (ANR) cuts out ambient noise and off-axis sounds
  2. External mic socket to use multiple mics
  3. Includes a wind-jammer
  4. Long battery life and USB-C chargeable inbuilt power source
  5. Bluetooth connectivity and a great app
  6. Excellent controls and advanced features like low-cut filter

Cons:

  1. Slightly heavier than other mics

I've been using this mic on my Canon R5 for the majority of my recent run-and-gun video projects and content creation trips. The quality of the audio captured on this mic is excellent, and a world above my camera's onboard microphone. I like that it came with a quality wind jammer, which is permanently attached to the mic instead of the foam windscreen since I'm always shooting outdoors and need to cut wind noise.

Since I'm not working on studio or cinema-grade projects, this mic is more than enough for me and I never have to spend time cleaning up audio in post thanks to the in-built ANR. Additionally, the included app is a handy feature– However, admittedly, I haven't taken advantage of it to the fullest.

2. TAKSTAR SGC-600

While in no way a top-of-the-line shotgun microphone, the TAKSTAR SGC-600 often appears in gear roundups like this due to the great value-for-money it offers.

At less than a fraction of other camera-mounted shotgun mics, this canon microphone offers super-cardioid sound polarity and decent sound quality overall. However, shooters will miss advanced features and may not like the static noise it produces.

Key Specifications

  • Super-cardioid polarity
  • No reported self-noise specs, although some static is certainly audible
  • AA Battery power
  • Plastic material
  • 0.165 lb (75 g) weight

While the overall specs aren't enough to turn heads, the TAKSTAR SGC-600 is a decent choice for those looking for an ultra-budget shotgun microphone under $40.

TAKSTAR Budget shotgun microphone

Pros:

  1. Excellent price for the sound quality it records
  2. Lightweight
  3. Wide polar pattern

Cons:

  1. Some static noises
  2. Lacks advanced features
  3. Poor build quality

While I'm reluctant to include this microphone in this roundup, the truth is that is very hard to ignore at this price point. I used the earlier model TAKSTAR SGC-598 for my first video projects, and truthfully it is a huge step up from your camera's inbuilt audio and often enough for most beginners working on stepping up their audio game.

The newer TAKSTAR SGC600 has improved on many of the pitfalls of the previous iteration, although sticks to very basic features aimed at beginner video creators. This is a low-tier option for those who need a mic at a very affordable price.

TAKSTAR Budget shotgun microphone

3. RODE VideoMic Go II - Most Versatile Shotgun Mic

RODE is a brand that is almost synonymous with on-camera shotgun microphones, creating the first of its kind with their VideoMic back in 2004.

The RODE VideoMic Go II is targeted toward content creators looking for a good balance between ultra-compact portability and decent audio recording quality.

Key Specifications

  • Super-cardioid polarity
  • Signal-to-noise ratio: 79 dBA
  • Self-noise: 15 dBA
  • Plastic material
  • 0.196 lb (89 g) weight

RODE's Videomic GO borrows the unique acoustic design introduced by their Videomic NTG cameras. It allows for a very versatile recording since you can mount it on your camera, attach it to a desk stand, or hang it from a boom pole.

RODE VideoMic Go II Shotgun Microphone for Travel

Pros:

  1. Revolutionary acoustic design allows for various use cases
  2. Very portable & lightweight
  3. Can use with a phone or PC via RODE cables
  4. Relatively low cost

Cons:

  1. USB cables not included
  2. No physical buttons

This shotgun mic from RODE is often recommended as the best budget mic on the market. At around $100, this mic offers excellent build quality, versatility, and of course, excellent sound quality with an impressive self-noise rating that is a considerable improvement over the original GO at a very competitive price range.

However, it lacks certain advanced features like ANR or the ability to access a high-pass filter or gain control when using it with a camera. As a result, this mic may not be adequate for those searching for professional shotgun microphones.

RODE VideoMic Go II Shotgun Microphone for Travel

4. RODE VideoMic Pro+

It goes without saying, the RODE VideoMic Pro+ is one of the most popular shotgun microphones for vloggers. I see this thing everywhere, and for good reason– it captures excellent audio and packs in good control features.

Key Specifications

  • Super-cardioid polarity
  • Signal-to-noise ratio: 79.8 dB
  • Self-noise: 14 dBA
  • Plastic material
  • 0.259 lb (122 g) weight

The VideoMic Pro+ is the flagship shotgun microphone for content creators. While RODE NTG mics offer more quality, the truth is that these are aimed at the professional video production markets and film sets.

RODE on camera Microphone

Pros:

  1. Flexible power options (rechargeable battery, AA batteries, or USB)
  2. Automatic power-on function is an unexpectedly useful feature
  3. Excellent battery life (100 hours+)
  4. Good control options for gain, bass roll-off, and treble boost

Cons:

  1. Micro USB connector is outdated
  2. Sacrifices on build-quality to save weight

Video creators working on their own online videos for social media or YouTube videos will find that this mic offers more than enough control and performance. There's a reason why this thing's so popular– it does everything you need it to do.

However, I personally prefer the JOBY Wavo Pro due to the in-built ANR, which for me is one of the most useful features in a shotgun mic.

5. Shure VP83F LensHopper Shotgun Microphone

Shure's unique VP83F LensHopper is an ambitious attempt at combining a small shotgun microphone with a digital recorder.

This is a clever idea that cuts out time for professionals doing video production using mirrorless cameras or DLSRs, who would otherwise record audio to an external recording device and need to sync picture and sound in post.

Key Specifications

  • Super-cardioid polarity
  • Signal-to-noise ratio: 76.6 dB
  • Self-noise: 17.4 dB
  • Plastic material
  • 0.293 lb (133 g) weight

While the Shure VP84F has been around for a while, it still offers a unique solution to cold shoe-mounted condenser microphones.

Yes, the specs ranging from NTS ratios, off-axis rejection, and general tonality are not as impressive as some of the best shotgun mics like the RODE VideoMic Pro+ or the JOBY WAVO Pro. However, the inbuilt digital recorder is a big reason why some of the biggest YouTubers like Casey Nesitat use this mic.

SHURE shotgun mic with inbuilt digital recorder

Pros:

  1. Record internally with a micro SD card (24bit Wav files)
  2. Real-time monitoring on the in-built LCD display
  3. Full audio solution is very unique

Cons:

  1. Although minimal, some would consider self-noise too high (anything above 15 dB is widely considered too much)
  2. Heavier & bulkier than other mics

A confession, this is the only mic in this roundup that I haven't personally tested. However, I wanted to include it as an option because one of the major pitfalls of recording audio on a shotgun mic is the camera's microphone pre-amp, not the mic itself.

Therefore, even with slightly inferior microphone specs on paper, the Shure LensHopper might prove to offer better overall sound quality due to its internal recording capabilities. The reviews and tests online certainly seem to indicate so.

What to Look For When Buying a Shotgun Microphone

Whether you're starting up a YouTube channel or looking to buy a shotgun microphone to improve your video content creation, there are several key factors to look for.

Below is a quick list that I believe determines the overall quality and use case for your projects.

  1. High Directionality: This is the primary purpose of choosing a shotgun microphone over lavalier mics or wireless microphone systems like the DJI Mic Pro to capture sound from a specific direction (on-axis) while avoiding background noise or an off-axis sound source. Most shotgun mics do this well, but the best options have the industry standard super-cardioid or hyper-cardioid polar pattern.
  2. Low Self-Noise: Cheap mics often introduce "self-noise", which is caused by the microphone's circuitry. This is often heard as a soft, audible "hiss". The best microphones will limit this unwanted noise with high-quality design, or through built-in ANR (active noise reduction) algorithms to remove self-generated structural noise. Additionally, the best shotgun microphones will include shock-isolating mounts to avoid sounds caused by the camera's movement.
  3. Sensitivity: Shotgun mics have high sensitivity since they are typically used when capturing sources at a far distance. While cheaper mics can increase sensitivity, it often results in unwanted self-noise. A good balance is achieved through a good signal-to-noise ratio.
  4. Connectivity: It's important to consider the type of camera or device you'll be using your microphone with. Today, most mirrorless and cinema cameras use mini-jack inputs while more expensive cinema cameras use XLR connectors. Additionally, modern shotgun mics can feature Bluetooth connectivity.
  5. Price: The price of shotgun microphones ranges from under $50 to over $1,000. However, most content creators and beginner filmmakers don't require a $1000 cinema-grade short shotgun mic.
Mirrorless camera on Gimbal with attached short microphone

Alternatives to On-Camera Shotgun Mics

In this roundup, I've only compared shotgun mics designed to be mounted on top of a mirrorless or DSLR camera via an included shock mount, since this is the most commonly used mic setup for beginner content creators and YouTubers.

However, some filmmakers and those working on high-quality video production projects might prefer to mount a mic on a boom pole or a fixed stand. If so, below are some professional directional microphones that are also an excellent choice.

If You're in a Hurry: Here Are the Best Hotels in Dubrovnik

With a population of only around 42,000, Dubrovnik isn't a large city. However, it does attract over 1.5 million tourists every year. As a result, you can expect many great places to stay in Dubrovnik, including resorts, hotels, and hostels for every budget.

The best area to stay is in or close to the Old Town (Stari Grad, or Walled City). This is where you'll find most of the attractions and highlights. However, staying just outside the city, or in one of the beautiful cliffside resorts and hotels is also a great option.

Below are my top-rated accommodation picks for the city of Dubrovnik, Croatia.

  • Bota Palace - Located in the center of the Old Town and a 3-minute walk from Buza Beach. This Bed and Breakfast offers beautifully decorated rooms, wifi, a kitchen, fridge, oven, and a la carte breakfast. A great pick for couples wanting to explore the city within the walls.
  • Hostel Petra Marina - With direct access to the local bus stop right outside, this hostel is just 200 meters away from the port and the perfect place to stay for backpackers wanting to explore Dubrovnik.
  • Rixos Premium Dubrovnik - A luxury choice for those wanting to relax in ultimate style. Modern-styled rooms with sea views and only a 2-minute walk to the beach. It offers a 2-story spa with features a Turkish bath and indoor pool.

Where to Stay in Dubrovnik: The 5 Best Neighborhoods

While adventurers looking for the best things to do in Dubrovnik will do well to pick a hotel close to the 16th-century old walled city, there are 4 more neighborhoods suited for different styles of travelers.

These include

  • Ploce - Located on the outer edge of the Old Town Walls Ploce is great for exploring the beaches and sea cliffs with incredible views over the Adriatic Sea.
  • Pile - This is a much quieter area outside of Old Town Walls. It is still close to all of the main attractions and has many cafes, bars, and restaurants.
  • Gruž Harbor - Perfect place for those catching or arriving from a ferry/cruise - great views over the sea
  • Lapad - Bigger resort-styled hotels. A Great pick for families with children as there are lots to do around the coastline and beaches to explore.

Below I'll go into a quick rundown of why you would want to stay in each of these Dubrovnik neighborhoods, and give some hotel suggestions for each for various budgets.

1. Dubrovnik Old City (Grad) - Stay in The Historic Walled City

The Dubrovnik Old City is a UNESCO World Heritage Listed site, world-renowned for its 16th-century stone wall fortifications. This Old Town is the main attraction in this city, set on the edge of the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea.

The majority of the buildings date back to at least the 18th century. The main street is called the Stradun, where you'll find vibrant local restaurants and cafes. Since there are no cars permitted in the Old City, everything is within walking distance, making it a great place to stay in Dubrovnik if you want to be close to the action.

Choosing a hotel in Dubrovnik's Old City also makes you feel like you're on the set of Game of Thrones– and that's because this was the GoT filming location for King's Landing!

The brand new apartments with blue ocean designs and modern furniture all have a fully equipped kitchen with stove, fridge, TV, washing machine and dishwasher, air conditioning, wifi, and a balcony with some incredible views. We specifically liked the large beds, which were extremely comfortable.

We hope you enjoy your Dubrovnik trip and have a wonderful time at one of the listed hotels!

An off-the-beaten-track travel guide to Lombok Indonesia featuring the 25 best things to do on your trip. Summit an active volcano, day trip to magical jungle waterfalls, and unwind on white sandy beaches– this is Lombok Indonesia!

Lombok Island is a volcanic island surrounded by coral reefs and dotted islets within the Indonesian archipelago. It’s often referred to as Bali’s sister island, but I like to call it Indonesia’s adventure island.

There’s an abundance of incredible things to do on Lombok, offering raw and memorable travel experiences.

After spending six weeks on the island, I’ve compiled this huge Lombok travel guide to help you plan your visit. I’ve given you a rundown on how to get here, what to expect, where to stay, and of course, a massive list of what to do on Lombok!

Quick Answer: Best Sightseeing Tours & Unmissable Experiences on Lombok

Below is a list of the most popular and worthwhile experiences that you can book on the island. If you're up for sightseeing on Lombok, don't go past these 3 must-dos.

Snorkeling on Lombok Island, Marine Life

About Lombok Indonesia

Lombok is an Indonesian island located just east of Bali, across the Lombok Strait in Southeast Asia. While Lombok has its own international airport and solid tourism infrastructure, it is sadly often overlooked as a travel destination in favor its neighboring tourism powerhouse.

However, thanks to adventurers slowly making a drift to Lombok from Bali via the Gili Islands and Nusa Penida, more and more people are slowly starting to discover this hidden gem.

The island of Lombok is home to the indigenous Sasak people, some of the kindest and most welcoming people I've ever come across in my travels. They are very proud of their sacred mountain; Gunung Rinjani, which is an active volcano with hot springs and an incredible crater lake.

In the coastal areas, you'll find both volcanic black beaches with calm waters, and pumping surf hotspots with white sands and a laid-back vibe. Conversely, the central regions of Lombok is dense with tropical jungle and many impressive waterfalls.

How to Get to Lombok

Where is Lombok Indonesia?

Lombok Indonesia is located within the Nusa Tenggara Barat province. This volcanic island is one of the Lesser Sunda Islands, which is found just east of the popular tourist island of Bali. The sea separating the two islands is called the Lombok Strait.

Wondering how to get here? Below is a quick up-to-date guide on the best ways to get to the island.

By Boat
As of 2023, there's a new convenient fast boat service from Bali that goes to Lombok each day. This journey takes roughly 1.5 hours.

Instead, you could book a cheap fast boat to Gili Trawangan, and spend a day or two on Gili T, Gili Meno, and Gili Air. Then, take the shuttle boat or public boat from Gili T to Lombok ($1 USD). In my opinion, this is the best way to get to Lombok from Bali as it's cheap and allows you to see the coral reefs of the Gili Islands as well.

Lombok International Airport (LOP)
There are daily flights between Lombok and Denpasar, as well as many other direct routes within Indonesia and internationally (including direct flights from Perth). Airlines flying into Lombok include Garuda, Lion Air, Silk Air, and Trans Nusa.

You can compare the best flights across all of these airlines using CheapOAir for great deals.

25 Best Things to Do on Lombok Indonesia

Without further ado, let's dive into this epic list of the best things to do on Lombok Indonesia! I haven't ranked this list in any order. So, it'll be up to you to choose your own adventures!

Remember, at the bottom of this post, you'll also find useful information on where to stay during your visit.

1. Mount Rinjani Volcano Trekking

Usually, you'll find Mount Rinjani trekking at the top of nearly everybody's list of what to do on Lombok, and rightly so!

Trekking Mount Rinjani was hands down one of the most epic adventures we had on Lombok.

In fact, I believe that climbing Rinjani is one of the most incredible hiking experiences you can have in South East Asia. The volcanic rim is breathtaking and the spectacular views of the crater lake makes you feel like you're on another planet!

Most treks leave from Senaru, however, less-popular routes are also completed from Tete Batu and Sembalun. If you're chasing the summit, I'd suggest trying to negotiate with local trekking guides in Senaru or in Sembalun.

Otherwise, you can book a hike to the most epic attraction on Lombok Indonesia below.

MOUNT RINJANI CRATER RIM HIKE FOR SUNRISE, SENARU TREKKING TO ACTIVE VOLCANO

2. Visit The Lombok Waterfalls

Just like Bali, Lombok has its own fair share of incredible waterfalls to visit– what do you expect, this is Indonesia!

The best part is that many are flowing year-round, despite the hot Lombok climate in the dry season. In my opinion, the natural beauty of Lombok is its primary attraction. And, checking out some of the waterfall trails is a sure way to experience it.

Some of my favorite adventures in Lombok were the waterfalls. Here are my top seven:

Below I've outlined three of my absolute favorites from that list to get you inspired.

Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep Waterfalls

I'd put money on the fact that you've already seen the impressive Tiu Kelep waterfall before. This incredible waterfall amphitheater has made the rounds on social media and even across waterfall tour banners as far as Bali and Java.

Located in Senaru, in the north of Lombok, Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls are two falls on the same, short jungle hike. Out of all of the things to do on the incredible island of Lombok Indonesia, I'd place a visit to these two waterfall attractions near the top.

Lombok Indonesia, Tiu Kelep Waterfall
Tiu Kelep Waterfall
SENDANG GILE WATERFALL SENARU

Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu Waterfalls

Another set of waterfalls that is value for time and money are Central Lombok highlights, Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu. Although they are located in the same geopark, the two waterfalls are vastly different.

Benang Kelambu is a curtain-like layer of flowing water and dense jungle plants. The other, Benang Stokel is a set of three plunging waterfalls in a wide jungle clearing.

Book in advance: Benang Kelambu & Benang Stokel Waterfall Trek (from Senggigi or Mataram)

Even if you have heard of these waterfalls before, you might be surprised to hear that there are actually another 3 hidden waterfalls here too.

Mangku Sakti Waterfall

Visiting Mangku Sakti waterfall ended up being one of my favorite things to do on Lombok Indonesia. Located in the north close to the trekking town of Sembalun, Mangku Sakti has several levels of fast-flowing rapids and a large main waterfall.

The best part about this one is that you can climb inside and behind the waterfall in a small rocky cave!

3. Explore the Senggigi Coastline

Senggigi was once the tourist capital of Lombok. However, the main tourist hub has now shifted from the west coast to the south (Kuta Lombok).

These days, you'll discover a chill beach vibe with plenty of small cafes and warungs. There's a main street wrapping along the coastline which is the perfect place to explore if you feel like beach hopping.

To see the best of Senggigi, I'd suggest renting a motorbike or scooter (with drop-off), which costs between 50,000-70,000 Rupiah per day and riding to all the beautiful beaches near Senggigi.

While you can catch a wave on a good day, the Senggigi beaches are more reserved for chilling, with calm, clear waters. Nevertheless, it's one of my favorite coastlines in Indonesia, and definitely worth an entry on your list of Lombok things to do and places to visit.

4. Visit the Tete Batu Rice Terraces

I've said it before but, Tete Batu is as close to Ubud as you'll get on Lombok. Complete with rice terraces, small cafes, waterfalls, and short hikes, Tete Batu is one of the most scenic Lombok tourist attractions.

Tete Batu is a small village that is the best place on Lombok to relax and unwind. Here, you'll also catch a great view of Rinjani but there are also plenty of opportunities for waterfall chasing.

Book: Tetebatu Rice Terraces Private Tour (includes waterfall and Monkey Forest)

5. Visit The Gili Islands

Since they're super easy to reach from Bali, The Gili Islands of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air are often mistaken for Balinese islands.

However, the Gili Islands are located on the northern coast of Lombok, which makes these islands a convenient transit location from Bali.

On the tiny island of Gili T, you'll find great snorkeling and scuba diving, abundant marine life, calm, white sand beaches, lively bars, night markets, and some magical sunsets.

Book: Best of Gili Islands Snorkeling Day Trip (from Lombok)

There are loads of day trips available to book from Lombok, which works out well if you want to cram as much adventure into your trip as possible.

6. Discover the "Secret" Gili Islands

Want island vibes but looking for what to do on Lombok that are more off the typical gringo trail? The "Secret Gili" Islands in the south of Lombok Indonesia will be your answer.

Many people are surprised to hear that Lombok actually has several islands all around its coast. The three I'd recommend are located off the quiet shores of Sekotong.

Book in advance: Secret Gili Islands Trip

There are several tours running here from Kuta beach, or you can make your way to Sekotong yourself and hop on a shared island-hopping trip to Gili Kedis, Gili Nanggu, and Gili Sudak.

GILI NANGGU LOMBOK

7. Gili Kedis Camping Trip

One of my absolute favorite experiences on Lombok was a camping trip to the tiny sandbar island of Gili Kedis.

The island is so tiny that you'd almost assume it would disappear at high tide! We finished off a great island-hopping day at the "Secret Gilis" by playing guitar and cooking a fresh BBQ at our private sandbar campsite. If you're looking for a raw, off-the-beaten-path travel experience in Lombok, make sure to spend a night out on Gili Kedis.

You can contact Feel Lombok and tell you that Olly from We Seek Travel sent you for a good deal.

GILI KEDIS LOMBOK, SUNSET

8. Lombok Pink Beach

One of the most unique beaches on Lombok is Pink Beach, wedged in the southeast corner of Lombok, in the Ekas Peninsula.

A visit to Pink Beach will mean that you'll get to see a rare phenomenon only possible in select parts of the world. The other Pink Beach is in Komodo, but you don't have to go that far to see one!

The water at Pink Beach Lombok is crystal clear, and there are some nice little jump rocks too.

This beach takes over an hour to reach from Kuta Lombok, so a visit will most likely be a whole-day trip. Even so, if you've got the time, I'd suggest making the effort. Even with the pink sand aside, this part of Lombok is one of the most scenic in terms of coastal landscapes.

Book: Pink Beach and Southeast Gilis Day Tour (from Senggigi, Kuta, or Mataram)

PINK BEACH LOMBOK

9. Pergasinginan Hill Sunrise Hike

Mount Rinjani isn't the only opportunity on Lombok for some epic mountain views. Another favorite hike is Pergasingan Hill, located in the mountain town of Sembalun.

The trek itself is quite steep, but shouldn't take more than a few hours for the return trip. I'd suggest leaving early since the sunrise views from the top are incredible!

You won't require a guide to reach the top of Pergasingan Hill. However, you can choose to camp at the top with the help of some local tour guides. This blog has some useful information for camping on Pergasingan Hill.

Or, Book locally: Pergasingan Hill Trek

SEMBULAN VILLAGE NEAR RINJANI

10. Bukit Selong Ricefield Viewpoint

While we're on the topic of hikes and viewpoints why not consider the Bukit Selong viewpoint over the carpeted Sembalun ricefields?

Unlike the previous two, this Lombok viewpoint doesn't require much hiking, just a quick walk up the hill at the back of town.

Bukit Selong is a great place to visit for either sunrise or sunset, and even though it's not very high, the views are pretty spectacular.

BUKIT SELONG VIEWPOINT OVER THE RICE FIELDS IN EASTERN LOMBOK

11. Explore the Rest of Sembalun and Senaru - North Lombok

You may have noticed that many of the items on this list of epic things to do on Lombok have been in the north. In terms of adventure travel, the north of Lombok has plenty of variety and countless things to do.

For off-the-beaten-path travel, I'd suggest spending a couple of days in Sembalun to explore the waterfalls, rice fields, and epic hikes and viewpoints.

MOTORBIKE IN SEMBALUN VILLAGE LOMBOK

11. Malase Hill Sunset Viewpoint

Although not typically visited by tourists, Malase has both beaches and viewpoints worth visiting.

The coastal village of Malase is situated only a few minutes south of Senggigi center. To reach the Malase Hill (Bukit Malase) sunset viewpoint, you'll need to follow the winding roads up and behind the village.

Viewpoint 1: 8° 30' 51.81" S 116° 5' 29.796" E
Viewpoint 2 (Bukit Marese): 8° 30' 44.232" S 116° 4' 29.184" E

There are two great spots to visit where you can enjoy the sunset over the water. However, these aren't pinned on Google Maps. If you have a motorcycle or scooter, you'll have time to visit both viewpoints - just copy and paste these coordinates into Google Maps.

12. Try Kopi Rachik (Spiced Lombok Coffee)

If you make the short coastal trip from Senggigi to Malase, then I'd highly recommend stopping by at Henry's Warung, on Google as "Kedai Mamiq" for some lunch and coffee.

Here, you'll be able to buy great food at a local price and have the opportunity to taste Henry's secret spiced coffee recipe. Through Henry, I met some of my best friends on Lombok who taught me a lot about local culture and showed us some amazing spots.

I've written a full coffee article and made a video about the traditional coffee-making practices if you're interested in learning more about this unique cultural experience on Lombok Indonesia.

AMPENAN COFFEE LOMBOK

12. Lombok Monkey Forest

Similarly to Bali, Lombok has its own thriving populations of Macaque and also a few Javan Lutung (black monkeys). If you're planning to stay or make a day trip to Tete Batu, then you'll nearly be certain to spot a few macaques.

If not, then you could also visit the Lombok Monkey Forest, (Baun Pusuk) located roughly 45 minutes from the main beach at Senggigi. This is a relatively new Lombok attraction but one that is quickly gaining popularity. The road here is sealed and in good condition, and you'll have plenty of opportunities to stop and take some photos of the rice fields and local villages on the way.

The Lombok Monkey Forest can be found at the top of a mountain pass, with plenty of places to park a car or motorbike. Even if you're not that interested in the Macaques, the view from the top and the ride here is worth the effort.

MACAQUE MONKEY AT THE LOMBOK MONKEY FOREST, BAUN PUSUK

13. Explore the Sekotong Peninsula - (Lombok Hidden Gem)

Although it's arguably one of the least visited regions of Lombok, Sekotong is a place full of adventure.

From white sandy beaches, thousands of islands with crystal clear water to explore, and one of the best coastal roads to drive on in Lombok, Sekotong should definitely be added to your Lombok itinerary.

ELAK ELAK BEACH AND GILI MILU ISLANDS, SEKOTONG, LOMBOK

14. Surfing at Kuta Lombok

Since it's one of the closest tourist hubs to the new International Airport, Kuta Lombok has become the go-to travel destination on Lombok. Since the southern coast of Lombok gets the best waves, the best things to do here usually involve surfing and water sports.

There are plenty of beaches and breaks that cater to both advanced and beginner surfers.

While Kuta Lombok beach on the southern coast is one of the most popular, I recommend checking out Segar, Gerupuk, Are Guling, Mawi, and Selong Belanak beaches for good breaks. You'll be able to rent a board for a few hours or even a week if you want at most beaches.

MAWI BEACH SURF SPOT, SURFING BEACHES KUTA LOMBOK

14. Check Out the Best Beaches in South Lombok

Even if you're not surfing, Kuta Lombok and the southern peninsula is still a treasure trove of epic beaches.

The best part is that most of the beaches aren't packed or busy. In fact, some of the best beaches on Lombok island that were only a short moped ride from Kuta Lombok were completely empty! d

16. Semeti Hills

The Semeti Hills, also known as Bukit Semeti, is a set of jagged coastal cliffs and natural pyramids on the south coast of Lombok. It's one of the most beautiful parts of the southern coastline and in my opinion one of the best Lombok tourist attractions worth visiting when in the south.

Visiting the Semeti Hills viewpoint is a great way to end a beach-hopping trip from Kuta Lombok, as it's a great option to watch the sunset. There's also a good little cliff-jumping spot around the corner, as well as a small beach cave.

SEMETI HILLS VIEWPOINT, BUKIT, PANTAI SEMETI

18. Bukit Merese Viewpoint

In terms of sunset spots in Kuta Lombok, the Merese Hill viewpoint near Tanjung Aan beach is easily the most popular– and for good reason.

Bukit Merese only takes about 15 minutes to reach via moped from the main strip on Kuta Lombok. The viewpoint itself is actually several hills, each looking over the ocean, with views across the southern coastline.

Since the area is quite spread out, it doesn't ever feel like a crowded sunset spot, even though at times it looks as if all of Kuta Lombok is there. Besides the wild monkeys, you'll almost certainly be able to watch the sunset in peace if you venture off to find a remote spot on the hill.

BUKIT MERESE SUNSET VIEWPOINT KUTA LOMBOK

19. Kuta Lombok Bat Cave - Bangkang Cave

If you thought that you'd seen all the attractions and things to do on Lombok Indonesia, think again. Other than epic beaches, viewpoints, hikes, and tourist attractions, Lombok also has its very own cave systems too.

Although quite small, the Kuta Lombok Bat Cave is home to thousands of small nocturnal bats. Located only 10 minutes from Kuta Lombok, the bat cave is a perfect attraction stop on the way to some of the popular beaches like Pantai Mawun or Selong Belanak.

BANGKANG CAVE, KUTA LOMBOK BAT CAVE

20. Nambung Beach Waterfall

Here's something a little unique yet again. Approximately an hour's ride from Kuta Lombok is a strange phenomenon that is famous amongst locals.

As the tide rushes out and waves pound the rocky shores of Nambung Beach, a natural "beach waterfall" appears. While it's not a freshwater waterfall, it's still a pretty cool spot to check out. If you do, make sure you bring a mask and snorkel, as there are literally dozens of turtles swimming around Nambung Beach!

NAMBUNG BEACH WATERFALL, LOMBOK

21. Mekaki Beach

In my opinion, one of the best beaches in Lombok is Mekaki Beach. This beach reminds me a little of those on Nusa Penida, with thick, deep sand and jagged, Jurassic cliffs edged by amazing turquoise waters. I'm serious- the water here is seriously blue. However, it can get a little rough when the swell picks up.

Mekaki Beach is located on the southern shores of Sekotong, which requires a little long, but well-worth ride if you're staying in Kuta Lombok.

Even if you don't swim, checking out the beach is still one of the best free things to do on Lombok!

DRONE LOMBOK BEACH

22. Drive the Epic New Coastal Road

Just before the road to Mekaki Beach is a newly constructed, long, winding coastal road. Known as "the new road", it makes for one of the most scenic drives in Lombok.

The road is in incredible condition. This means you’ll be excused if you divert your eyes to enjoy the coastal views! There are plenty of opportunities to park your bikes and grab some panoramic shots from the mountains.

My advice is to take the road east after leaving Pantai Mekaki. Then, follow it all the way around before diverting North back to Lembar.

MOUNTAIN ROAD SOUTH COAST LOMBOK

23. Malimbu Hill Viewpoint

If you're staying in Senggigi, then you'll actually get a better sunset than those in Kuta Lombok, since the sun will set right out on the ocean's horizon.

The best sunset viewpoint in Senggigi is Malimbu Hill. This is a small, barren headland with a few leaning palms and one of the best attractions in Lombok Indonesia for those searching for unbeatable sunsets. Like most of the places in Senggigi, it's usually pretty quiet, and the view is spectacular!

24. Take the 4-Day Boat Trip to Komodo

If you're traveling Lombok on an open schedule, and you've got some time in Indonesia, then I'd highly recommend taking the 4-day 3-night boat trip from Lombok to Komodo Island. This is definitely one of the best experiences you can have in Lombok and maybe even in all of Indonesia!

This trip was one of the most epic experiences I had in Indonesia, and was ridiculously good value for money. Costing only 2.3 million Rupiah, the boat includes accommodation, food, transport, access to all the Komodo highlights (including Padar Island and seeing the amazing Komodo Dragons) as well as all National Park fees.

You can book directly with Wanua Adventures, or, alternatively, let the guys at Feel Lombok organize it for you for the same price.

25. Go White Water Rafting at Jangkok River

Visiting Lombok during the dry season? You're in luck because this is the best time to go rafting at Batu Mekar.

This is a beautiful clean river running through tropical rainforest surroundings on a 6.5-kilometer route. The river offers class III rapids, meaning this is a fun and appropriate activity for beginners!

Lombok Accommodation Guide - Where to Stay

So, now that you've got some good ideas for things to do on Lombok Indonesia, why not save some travel cash by booking these accommodation options in advance?

I've broken this accommodation guide into sections for each area of Lombok Island so you can better orientate yourself. I've also listed several hotel and hostel options ranging from luxury hotels and resorts to budget dorms and guest houses.

However, each is close to the best Lombok attractions, activities, and hidden gems in each of the main Lombok tourist areas.

South Lombok

South Lombok is all about awesome surf spots and picturesque beaches. Here are the best picks.

Where to Stay in Kuta Lombok

  • Rascals Hotel - Adults Only - the 3-star hotel features an outdoor swimming pool, restaurant, and terrace. It offers a quiet and relaxing atmosphere being an adult-only hotel. With a great location, Rascals Hotel ticks the boxes for a great place to stay.
  • Martas Windows - boasting authentic Indonesian bungalow villa-style rooms. This is any Instagrammer's dream place to stay. The rooms are large and the outdoor swimming pool is the perfect place to relax. Located in the heart of Kuta it really doesn’t get much better!
  • Origin Lombok  - Origin has a swimming pool with a sun terrace as well as lush gardens to relax by. This spot is centrally located and features an on-site restaurant. One of the best picks in Kuta Lombok for sure!
ORIGIN KUTA LOMBOK INDONESIA

West Lombok

West Lombok is often a gateway to Lombok for travelers coming in from Bali or the Gili islands via boat. Senggiggi is often the best place to stay, with awesome resorts, hotels, and backpacker hostels dotting the coast.

However, if you're looking for a more remote location, you'll find great deals on accommodation in Sekotong.

Where to Stay in Senggigi

  • Katamaran Hotel & Resort - those wanting a resort experience go no further! The Katamaran Hotel & Resort ticks all the boxes, boasting a swimming pool, wellness center, and on-site restaurant you won't ever want to leave.
  • Cozy Cottages Lombok - this villa-style cottage accommodation screams relaxation. It is located just 600 m from Mangsit Beach and has an on-site restaurant. The outdoor swimming pool is surrounded by luscious gardens that provide a  tranquil experience.
  • Bale Mandala Villas - a great option for those traveling in large groups or families. The villas can sleep up to 10 people and some include a private pool. A fully equipped kitchen and beautifully designed lounge areas make this a perfect choice. It is a short 1.6km walk to Senggigi beach.
PASIFIC BACH COTTAGES LOMBOK INDONESIA ACCOMMODATION

Where to Stay in Sekotong

Since this regency is a little tucked away. To save money on transport, I’d recommend staying in this largely unexplored part of Lombok Indonesia for a couple of nights to check out all the best things to do. Here are my top picks for budget accommodation.

  • Cocotinos Sekotong Lombok - The property overlooks the incredible secret Gilli islands, has a large outdoor beachfront pool, a wellness center, and has its very own digital nomad video editing room. A great choice for those wanting a quiet location.
  • Krisna Bungalows and Restaurant - located in Pelangan, not too far from Sekotong harbor. Each double room is equipped with a fan and bathroom and is conveniently located in a quiet area. You’ll also get a free breakfast.
  • Silver Fern Beach Retreat if you’re looking for a place in Lombok Indonesia to escape the crowds, meet some great people and unwind by the swimming pool, then this is it. Breakfast is included and the owners can organize loads of tours and activities in Lombok

North Lombok

The two main areas to stay in north Lombok are Senaru and Sembalun. These are two great places to stay for hiking, especially if you want to climb Mount Rinjani or Pergasingan Hill.

You’ll also find some of the best waterfalls in this region, including Tiu Teja, Sendang Gile, and Mangku Sakti waterfalls.

Where to Stay in Senaru

  • Rinjani Lodge - the perfect option for those wanting a luxurious experience surrounded by mountains. Boasting 2 outdoor swimming pools and breakfast delivered to your room Rinjani Lodge sits at the top of the list.
  • Pondok Guru Bakti Cottage - the homestay you didn’t know you needed! With incredible views over the mountains from the infinity pool Pondok Guru Bakti Cottage is a hidden gem with Tiu Kelep Waterfall just a short 1 km walk from the property.
  • Tiu Kelep Homestay - This one is located literally across the road from Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile waterfalls. The owner is super friendly, offers free unlimited coffee and tea, breakfast, and can also organize waterfall, or Rinjani trekking tours. A double room is the cheapest in Senaru at only $7 per night.
Senaru Lodge in Lombok

Where to Stay in Sembalun

Sembalun village isn’t exactly the most touristy location on Lombok. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any great guest houses or hotels available.

  • Bukit Tiga Lima Boutique Hotel - the location is hard to beat with impeccable views over the surrounding rice fields. The 3-star hotel features triangular rooms with BBQ facilities and an included breakfast. Perfect for couples wanting to relax away from the bustling center.
  • Radiya Guesthouse - one of the best-value accommodation options in Sembalun. The rooms are small, but very clean and have everything you need. There’s unlimited free coffee and tea, as well as a free breakfast included.
  • Sembalun Kita Cottage - set among the mountains the Sembulan Kita Cottage offers its guests incredible views from its rooms, hot water, free breakfasts, and the option of sleeping in a 100-year-old traditional Indonesian house.

Lombok Indonesia Guide: Travel Tips & Info

I hope you enjoyed that long list of epic adventures and attractions on Lombok. Before you head out and explore the island, check out some of the useful travel tips and information below to better plan your visit.

When is the Best Time to Visit Lombok?

The climate in Lombok island is distinguished by two primary seasons; the dry season and the rainy season. It has a tropical climate meaning temperature stays relatively the same all year round.

While Lombok is Bali's sister island, it doesn't receive as much rainfall and is generally drier.

Dry Season: April to October
Locals refer to this period as "summer" even though it is technically in the southern hemisphere. That's because the weather is generally drier and more beach-friendly.

Rainy Season: October to March
The best time to explore Lombok if you want to get the most out of the epic waterfalls! The weather during these months are a little sticky and humid but enjoyable!

The best time to visit Lombok would fall between July and August. However, this is the peak travel season, so visiting in the shoulder season of October and March is also a good idea!

LOMBOK PINK BEACH, INDONESIA

Getting Around on Lombok

Lombok is generally quite easy to get around. I choose to rent a motorbike because it is cheap and this is how most of the local people get around.

However, you can also rent a car, pay a taxi driver, arrange a private driver for the day, or book organized day tours to the best places on the island. Unfortunately, there is a lack of bus transport on Lombok Indonesia. But, thankfully renting a bike or car is quite cheap.

If you'd prefer to book organized tours, I recommend searching Get Your Guide and Klook. They are the two most trusted booking sources on Lombok and since the pandemic, they offer free cancellations on all bookings.

Is Lombok Worth Visiting?

If you can't guess my answer by now, then I'll assume you've skipped the article altogether. Yes, of course, Lombok is worth visiting! In fact, I'd recommend it over Bali and other famous Indonesian islands for a few reasons.

  • Lombok is still somewhat a hidden gem - there aren't crowds of tourists yet
  • The people of Lombok are some of the friendliest on earth
  • Lombok is one of the best surf destinations in Indonesia

A complete & up-to-date accommodation guide on where to stay in Tulum in 2023.

Tulum is one of Mexico’s best vacation spots. While it’s no longer a hidden beach town, this beautiful stretch of coast on the Riviera Maya still offers a much more relaxed and laid back travel scene than nearby Cancun or Playa del Carmen.

So, whether you’re planning to stay near the beach in the Hotel Zone or in the heart of the Pueblo, this 2023 hotel and neighborhood guide will help you find the best place to stay in Tulum for your trip!

The Quick Answer for Where to Stay in Tulum

Generally speaking, there are two neighborhoods for where you'll want to book your accommodation. These are Tulum Town (Pueblo), and the Tulum Hotel Zone (Tulum Beach).

Tulum Town is a laid-back town close to the ADO bus station and has loads of hotels, guest houses, hostels, restaurants, bars, and everything else you could imagine.

Closer to the beach, the Tulum Hotel Zone is more of a luxury accommodation area with high-end resorts, spas, restaurants, and nightclubs. Below are the 3 best picks in both areas.

  • Casa Malca - Perfect for couples searching for a luxury, private and relaxing resort. It's situated on a private beach surrounded by palm trees and offers luxury spa treatments and a large outdoor swimming pool.
  • Mamasan Treehouses & Cabins - Stay in an epic tree house just 100m from South Tulum Beach! Features an epic root-top jungle bar with rooms overlooking the ocean.
  • Myan Monkey - By far the best hostel for a party vibe and making lifelong friends. The perfect choice for backpackers looking for accommodation in a great location. Just a short walk to Tulum Center where you can find many restaurants and bars.

When planning where to stay in Tulum, Mexico, there are two areas you'll want to keep in mind. These are:

Situated along the beach of Tulum. This is a great option for those wanting to watch the sunset over the Caribbean Sea from their private rooms.

  • Tulum Beach (Hotel Zone) - Popular hotel area on the beach

Located in the heart of Tulum. This is a great location for those who want to feel a sense of luxury without breaking the bank whilst enjoying a fun stay.

Below is a small map showing the best areas for planning your stay in Tulum.

Stay on Tulum Beach Hotel Zone - The Best Place to Stay for Seaside Hotels

Tulum beach is lined with incredibly designed and unique hotels. The area is known for its beautiful beaches and tranquility.

In the Hotel Zone, you'll find a wide range of Tulum beach resorts, hotels, and beach bars. Accommodation in this area of Tulum is a little more pricey than in Pueblo but you will definitely receive the best service and returns for your money. That's why I've mostly listed high-end hotels and resorts here.

Additionally, the area has a range of things to check out, like the Follow That Dream sign and Cenote Encantado.

1. Mayan Monkey

This 3-star hostel is a fantastic place to meet new people and party through the night. The adults-only Mayan Monkey has its own nightclub and DJ!

Besides that, they also have a coffee house on site, a wellness center, and yoga classes. Located just a short drive from Paraiso Beach, this hostel is truly one of the best places to stay in Tulum if you don't mind a party or two.

There is an outdoor swimming pool, and rooms feature free wifi and private bathrooms. The equipped kitchen is shared, which makes it a great place to make some new friends!

And for those who are up for an adventure the Cenote Car Wash is a short 18-minute drive from the property.

2. Meteora Stay & Coffeehouse

The Meteora Stay & Coffeehouse has an excellent location in Tulum town. Located just 800 meters from the ADO bus station and 3.7 kilometers from the Mayan Ruins, this hostel offers a range of private rooms that can fit up to 3 people. Some have private kitchens and bathrooms.

The property boasts shared lounges and beautifully designed terraces. The hostel even has its own business center! What we loved about this place were the incredible jungle vibe and the outdoor swimming pool. It is amazing that this calming atmosphere is possible being so close to the bustling Tulum town.

This hostel has gotten some great reviews, and we fully understand why!

3. Hotel Central Station

The Hotel Central Station Tulum is located, as the name suggests, just a short walk away from the ADO bus station. However, even though this hotel is situated in the town center, it still has a somewhat quieter location. Something we liked a lot!

The rooms are equipped with wifi, air conditioning, a safe, flat-screen TV, and a private bathroom. Daily housekeeping is also available. Furthermore, the Central Station Tulum is a perfect choice for larger groups, as the hotel offers big family rooms.

Not sure where to stay in Tulum with a family for a low price? This might be your best bet!

4. oOstel Smart Hostel

We end the list with the oOstel Smart Hostel: one of the best value for money for anyone on a tight budget. It is very difficult to find such a good place for such a low price.

oOstel Smart has extremely comfortable beds with cubical curtains and an electricity socket. The free wifi works well throughout the property, and there are two separate pools: one outdoor and one offering a swim-up bar! There is also a restaurant and bar on-site.

The location is excellent, as it's within close proximity to the ADO bus station and the Tulum ruins or for those who are looking for an adventure Cenote Calavera is a 7-minute drive from the hostel. For budget travelers still looking for where to stay in Tulum: there you go!

We hope you all have a wonderful stay.

A comprehensive travel guide outlining the absolute best things to do in Hobart Tasmania. Explore all of the well-known Hobart attractions as well as some off-the-beaten-path hidden gems!

Hobart is Tasmania’s capital and one of Australia’s most historic cities. Situated on the estuary of the River Derwent and nestled beneath the towering Kunanyi, (Mount Wellington), Hobart is a favourite getaway destination for millions of Aussies and international visitors every year.

Hobart, Australia’s southernmost capital city serves as the major entry point to Tasmania. Therefore, this small city is a perfect base or starting place for travellers looking to explore this incredible island.

But, did you know that there are plenty of fun things to do in Hobart itself for both adventure travellers and brief visitors? In this guide, I’ll give you an up-to-date rundown on what to do in the city and surrounds to help you plan your epic Tassie trip.

31 Best Things to do in Hobart

In this guide to the 31 best things to do in Hobart, I aim to highlight all of the best Hobart attractions to help you better plan your Tasmania trip. I've also written comprehensively about many of these itinerary highlights based on my personal experience in the island state– so make sure to check out the individual posts for each as well.

Also, at the bottom of this post, I've included a detailed Hobart travel guide. This outlines everything you need to know about visiting Hobart including how to get here, when to go and where to stay.

Update: Make sure to read my detailed accommodation guide to find out where to stay on your next visit to Tasmania's capital city.

1. See Hobart from the top of Kunanyi (Mount Wellington)

Kunanyi, also known as Mount Wellington, dominates the Hobart landscape. No matter where you go, you'll see this powerful 1271-metre mountain soaring over the cityscape.

Kunanyi is very important to the people of Hobart. It protects the city from devastating winds, soaks in rain clouds and distributes fresh drinking water from the thousands of creeks and tributaries in Wellington Park.

If you ask anyone for ideas for things to do in and around Hobart, especially for first-time visitors, then a common answer will always be a trip up to the summit! Luckily, there are plenty of ways to reach the peak, known as The Pinnacle.

One option for the adventurers is to take one of the many walking tracks in Wellington Park. Below you'll find a link to what I believe is the best circuit loop to the summit.

Read More: Mount Wellington Hike: Circuit Walk to Mount Wellington Summit

If you're not a keen hiker but still want to experience one of the most popular attractions in Hobart, then it is also possible to drive or take a bus to The Pinnacle.

This bus service is known as the Wellington Explorer and departs from Franklin Square near Salamanca Place. There are plenty of stops along the way, including The Springs, which is a popular base on Mount Wellington for many hikes and walks.

MOUNT WELLINGTON SUMMIT BUS

2. Go Hiking in Wellington Park

The Pinnacle on the summit of Mount Wellington isn't the only awesome hike in Hobart. In fact, there are several dozen trails in the surrounding Wellington Park.

If you're up for short walks or even long, full-day hikes then I recommend heading to The Springs. From here, there is an information board outlining several of the best hikes and tracks in Hobart.

My favourite hike from Hobart: Wellington Falls and the Disappearing Tarn

STRICKLAND FALLS HOBART

3. Explore Hobart's Waterfalls

Just as there are loads of hikes, there are also plenty of waterfalls to explore near Hobart. The largest and one of my personal favourites is Wellington Falls, which requires a long, full-day out-and-back hike.

Otherwise, there are plenty of smaller but equally scenic waterfalls that are within walking distance of the Hobart suburbs. Some of these include O'Grady's Falls, Silver Falls, Secret Falls and Strickland Falls. You can read about how to get to each in the link below.

STRICKLAND FALLS HOBART

4. Take a Day Trip To Bruny Island

Bruny Island is perhaps the best and most-visited Hobart attraction. This adventure-packed 362 km² island is accessible via a 15-minute car ferry from Kettering, just half an hour south of Hobart.

From the iconic Neck Lookout to rugged coastlines to unique wildlife to world-class gourmet food and produce, it's no wonder why a visit to Bruny Island is on the top of many people's list of things to do in Hobart.

To be fair though, Bruny Island deserves much more than just a quick day trip. But still, if you're short on time then it's possible to book an organised tour from Hobart that manages to cram in a fair bit.

5. MONA - The Most Unique & Strange Thing to do in Hobart

Mona is definitely one of the weirdest attractions in Hobart. The acronym MONA stands for "The Museum of Old and New". This quirky mix of ancient, modern and contemporary art is the largest privately-funded museum in the southern hemisphere. I'd argue that it's also the strangest.

So, if you're in Hobart town, make sure to plan a trip to MONA if you're up for the experience!

6. Take a Day Trip to Port Arthur (Unesco World Heritage Site)

If you haven't noticed yet, Hobart is a great place to base yourself when exploring day trips to some of Tasmania's best areas and Tourist attractions. And, for history lovers, a trip to Port Arthur on the Tasman Peninsula is a must-do experience that's easy on a day trip from Hobart.

The World-Heritage-listed Port Arthur Historic Site is a well-preserved penal colony site where thousands of convicts were sent during the early colonial period in Tasmania. A ticket to visit to the Port Arthur historic site includes a guided tour and allows visitors to explore the grounds, prisons, homes and messes of early convicts and colonists.

7. Go Camping in South Hobart

Are you travelling to Tasmania in a van or motorhome? We spent several months exploring Tassie in our van and let me tell you that it's one of the best ways to explore the island state.

If you'd like to find a nice campsite that allows a campfire, then I can highly recommend the Gordon Foreshore Recreation Reserve. This waterfront campsite is only 45 minutes south of Hobart and overlooks Bruny Island across the deep passage. The campsite at Gordon Foreshore runs on a donation-only principle which means staying here can also be one of the cheapest options near Hobart.

It's no secret that Tasmania is one of the best wine-producing regions in Australia.

But, if you're traveling to Hobart, you'll have more than a handful of vineyard options to choose from.

Thankfully, there's an awesome full-day Tasmanian wine tour available to book directly from Hobart (meet at Brooke Street Pier). This tour visits four of the best wineries in Tasmania's south, varying between:

  • Derwent Estate
  • Domaine A
  • Pooley Wines

Things to do in Hobart, Hobart Attractions

11. See Hobart from Mount Nelson Lookout

While The Pinnacle lookout on Mount Wellington offers arguably the best views of Hobart, there is another lookout that is worth checking out too.

The Mount Nelson lookout features a historic signalling station that was used since 1811 to send messages from Hobart to the penal colony at Port Arthur. And, it's no wonder they chose it. This spot features uninterrupted and spectacular views of the city, Bruny Island and the Tasman Peninsula in the distance.

To get here, you'll can either use your own transport to drive up to Mount Nelson via Proctors Road, walk from Sandy Bay or take a bus.

12. Visit the Salamanca Markets

The Salamanca Markets are held on Saturday mornings at Salamanca Place near Hobart harbour (just below Battery Point). This market brings together artists, craftsmen, food stalls, farmers and many Tasmanian small business owners to sell their unique wares and famous street foods.

If you happen to find yourself in Hobart on a weekend, make sure to save time for the Salamanca Markets, one of the best markets I've been to in Australia.

13. Take a Day Trip to Wineglass Bay & Freycinet National Park

Easily the most iconic beach in Tasmania and even maybe in Australia; Wineglass Bay is a must-visit for anyone coming to Tasmania. If you find yourself in Hobart for a few days, then it's possible to visit Freycinet National Park on a self-drive or an organised day trip.

Book: Wineglass Bay & Freycinet Day Trip From Hobart

I'd say that a visit to this jaw-dropping peninsula is one of the top things to do in Hobart and even in all of Tasmania!

MOUNT AMOS SUNRISE

14. Visit Mount Field National Park

Located approximately 1 and a half hours from Hobart is Mount Field National Park, one of Tasmania's most scenic parks. This lush, fern-filled rainforest is home to some of the tallest trees in the world. There are also several waterfalls to check out making Mount Field a prime attraction near Hobart.

You can get to Mount Field by driving to the Visitor Centre, where you will find information and trails to many of the waterfalls and tracks.

15. Marvel at Some of the World's Tallest Trees at the Styx Reserve

Near Mount Field is the Styx Forest Reserve. This is a special conservation area that is also home to some of the tallest trees in Tasmania. Some of these giant ash trees (eucalyptus regnans) are over 500 years old and stand over 90 metres in height!

Unfortunately, getting to the Styx requires your own transport as there are no tours or public transport options. However, if you find yourself with a car and looking for epic things to do near Hobart, definitely add the Styx Tall Trees walk to your list.

Tasmania is well-known in Australia and around the world for its incredible produce. A great place to try Tasmanian-made dairy products and cheeses is the Richmond Cheese Factory (Wicked Cheeses).

A visit to the Botanical Gardens in Hobart is a great way to relax and learn about Tasmania's unique diversity of plants, flowers and trees. While not the first attraction on my list of things to see in Hobart, I'm very glad that I made the visit. The Antarctica room and seeing some giant Huon Pines were definite highlights.

18. Walk down to the Harbour At Hobart's Waterfront

Conveniently situated between Salamanca and the city centre is Hobart's scenic boat harbour. Taking a stroll by the Hobart waterfront near the piers and Salamanca area is a great way to wind down an evening.

Constitution Dock is the most popular attraction at Hobart Harbour and from here you can see some of the Tasmanian ship icons like the Lady Nelson.

Other piers like Brooke Street Pier and Murray Street Pier are also just across from several bars and restaurants playing live music on the weekends. This is one of the best things to do in Hobart at night and great if you don't have a car.

19. Take a Boat Cruise To Bruny Island

While you're at the harbour, why not take the chance to book a boat cruise?

There are several options from short sails up the River Derwent to epic coastal cruises on Bruny Island. You will find a tour and information desk just near Constitution Dock but you'll also find most of the offerings online at Get Your Guide.

Tip: This is a popular activity and sells out often during the peak season!

20. Experience Tasmania from Above on a Scenic Flight from Hobart

Perhaps one of the most epic and memorable things to do in Hobart is to take a scenic flight over one of Australia's most beautiful coastlines. This particular flight tour departs from Cambridge, just 15 minutes from Hobart and cruises over both the Freycinet Peninsula and Maria Island.

Also included on this epic 3-hour flight is a landing on Maria Island where you will be shown some of the best attractions and enjoy a complimentary lunch.

21. Spend a Day on the Tasman Peninsula

The Tasman Peninsula is an easy and incredibly scenic 70-minute drive from Hobart. Unfortunately, most people head straight to Port Arthur and skip the rest of this beautiful part of Tasmania.

The Tasman Peninsula is a hiking and outdoor mecca! From powerful sea caves to soaring, jagged coastlines, the peninsula offers a wide range of outdoor activities for all levels. For hikers who are staying in Hobart for a while, then I highly recommend checking out The Three Capes Track!

22. Experience Glamping in the Huon Valley

Located 30-40 minutes southwest of Hobart is Huonville and the Huon Valley. This region is famous for fresh farm produce including cheese, wine, apples, honey and more. A visit to the Huon Valley is a great way to spend a day trip away from the city.

If you have another night to spare, then I highly recommend checking out Huon Valley glamping. This is a luxury camping experience and definitely one of the most unique places to stay in Tasmania!

HUON VALLEY GLAMPING

23. Stock up on Fresh Produce at the Farm Gate Markets

Often overshadowed by the extremely popular Salamanca Markets is the fresh produce market on Bathurst Street (near Elizabeth Street) named Farm Gate Markets. This inner-city street is transformed every Sunday morning into a bustling farmers' market where visitors can stock up on local Tasmanian produce.

There are also always great street-food options and coffee carts, so spending a bit of time exploring the Farm Gate Market is a great bet.

24. See Abundant Wildlife on a Trip to Maria Island

Maria Island is known for its rich convict settlement history and abundant wildlife. For those visiting Hobart interested in seeing some iconic Tasmanian wildlife like wallabies, wombats, possums and even Tassie Devils, make sure you include a trip to Maria Island.

Hobart is Australia's best answer to New Zealand's downhill-loving Queenstown. The foothills of Kunanyi/Mt Wellington and the Queens Domain have several epic downhill tracks definitely worthy of checking out.

The most well-known track is the North-South Track. This begins from The Springs and connects to Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park for hours of downhill adventure.

If you don't have your own pushy, you can rent one from Roll Cycles or book a downhill bike tour on Viator.

27. Hobart Evening Sunset Dinner Cruise Down the Derwent River

I've recommended a few tours and paid options in this list of things to do in Hobart. But, by far the most bang-for-buck experience you can buy is an evening sunset dinner cruise departing from Hobart harbour. This 3-hour sunset cruise includes a three-course meal and one alcoholic beverage as you cruise up the River Derwent.

Also, you'll be guided by an experienced skipper who points out all of the historic landmarks and buildings along the way. All this for less than $60, I'd say that's one of the best deals in the city!

These days, you'll find amazing 19th-century stand-stone and weatherboard cottages and historic houses, a few quaint parks, and some great cuisine

31. Line Your Hobart Trip Up with These Events

If you're flexible on your travel dates, or looking for the best time to visit Hobart, consider lining your trip up with one of these events and music festivals.

Dark Mofo
Dark Mofo is a winter music festival that takes place at night. It's all about celebrating the darkness of the Tassie winter solstice. It's one of the most unique music festivals in Australia and gathers thousands to the scene.

Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race
The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race is one of the world's best sailing events. Starting in Sydney, sailors make their way over the treacherous Bass Strait and finish in Hobart. This is a spectacular event, and if you find yourself in Hobart town (the finish line) around December or January, you have to come down to see the yachts!

Summer Festival & Taste of Tasmania
This is one of the largest festivals in Tasmania. The Taste of Tasmania is a massive food festival and is known as the biggest open-air restaurant in Australia!

Royal Hobart Show
If you're from Queensland or New South Wales, you'll already know about the Royal Easter Show and Ekka. Tasmania has its very own agricultural show in Hobart, known as the Royal Hobart Show.

New Years
New Year's Eve is always a great time in Hobart. There are yearly fireworks displays over the harbour, shooting out from the River Derwent. Usually, the best place to watch is at the Salamanca waterfront walkways and wharves or at Mawson Place, Parliament House Lawns, Prices Park, or AJ Park.

Where to Stay in Hobart

The area closest to most highlights in Hobart is called “Salamanca Place“. This area has great restaurants and bars and is close to the markets, wharf, museums and the Elizabeth Mall.

However, Hobart is a relatively small city of just over 200,000 and consequently, most accommodation options in the inner suburbs provide easy access to most of the highlights.

  • Best Mid-Range Hotel: The Rivulet - The Rivulet is an awesome 19th century, heritage-listed manor. It offers some of the best suites in Hobart without a ridiculous price tag.
  • Best Budget Hostel: Montacute Boutique Bunkhouse - For budget travellers and backpackers, Montacute is by far the best place to stay in Hobart. This is a great hostel that is ranked as having the best vibe in the city.

Hobart Tasmania Travel Guide: All Your Questions Answered

As I mentioned at the beginning of this guide to the best things to do in Hobart, I've dedicated this section to help you plan and prepare for your upcoming trip.

Here, you'll find answers to things like where to stay, how to get around, the best time to visit and more!

When is the Best Time to Travel to Hobart?

The great thing about Hobart and Tasmania in general is that it makes for a great place to visit all year round. However, unlike many other parts of Australia, and due to the extreme distance from the equator, Tasmania experiences greater seasonality, or seasonal variation.

If I had to pick the best time to visit Tasmania, I'd have to choose Autumn or early Winter. Autumn offers a great mix of beach weather and occasional alpine snow. However, it'll really depend on what out of the many things to do in Hobart you are keenest for.

Seasons in Hobart

What this means is that the difference between Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter are all very noticeable. Below is a summary of what you might expect if you visit Hobart during different times of the year.

Summer: December-February
Summers in Hobart are comfortable and mostly warm. The average temperatures range from a dry 11.5 to 21°C. This is a great time to visit for swimming on day trips to the coast or on longer hikes in the surrounding mountains.

Autumn: March-May
Autumn is a great time to visit Hobart because you will experience many calm, sunny days with temperatures averaging between 9 - 17°C. The city turns a beautiful yellow and orange. Look for the Tasmanian Fagus, or Deciduous beech, which is the only deciduous tree (trees that shed their leaves for Winter) in Australia.

Winter: June-August
Winter is a great time to visit Hobart, especially for Aussies, who will get to experience a domestic trip that feels like you've left the country. Mount Wellington is often peaked with snow and temperatures range between 5 - 12.°C.

Spring: September-November
Spring is a beautiful time of year in Hobart. It's also the wettest time with average temperatures falling between 7 - 16.°C. Due to the increased rainfall, many of the waterfalls around Hobart are in peak flow during Spring.

Weather in Hobart

I don't usually comment too much on weather in blog posts about attractions or things to do, however, Hobart's weather is so unique that I feel that all visitors should consider it. The weather in Hobart is extremely localised. This makes planning activities to do in Hobart a little difficult.

To explain, it could be pouring with rain on Kunanyi, while Hobart is sunny and cloud-free less than 10 kilometres away. So, when planning your activities and must-see tourist attractions in Hobart, check weather forecasts (although often unreliable and unpredictable) at precise locations.

Getting to Hobart From the Airport

Both domestic and international visitors flying into Hobart land at the Hobart International Airport in Cambridge. This is approximately 19 kilometres from Salamanca (Hobart). Skybus offers a shuttle bus service from the airport for $19.50 per person.

Travel tip: If travelers are flying from Australia or New Zealand, then Flyparks is a great way to save on airport parking. You can book in advance and get great rates on Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and even Perth Airport Parking.

Van Travel in Hobart Tasmania

One of the best and most popular ways to travel in Hobart and Tasmania is to do so in a motorhome, caravan or camper. This is because Tasmania has what I believe to be the best "van life" facilities in Australia. Due to the wide range of things to do across the island, it's also really economical to travel this way since you'll have your own transport.

If you're travelling to Hobart and plan on bringing or renting your own van, then you might benefit from reading about our experience travelling around Tasmania for several months in our van.

The post Finding the Best Travel Organizer for Electronics & Accessories in 2023 appeared first on We Seek Travel.

Stay organized and keep your gear in order while on the road with this guide to finding the best travel organizer for electronics.

Let’s face it. There’s nothing worse than a backpack or suitcase full of unorganized cables and electronic equipment. Not only is it impossible to find that one cable when you need it, but your expensive electronic equipment could get banged up– or worse, lost.

As a travel photographer who’s lived out of his backpack for over four years now, I’ve faced the same struggles. After losing my last SD card, I set out on a mission to reorganize my travel electronics and accessories. The result is this list of simple travel accessory organizers that changed my life.

So, whether you’re a full-time digital nomad, about to embark on your first backpacking trip, or traveling to the big smoke on a business trip, this guide to finding the best travel organizer for electronics will be your best friend.

Why You Need A Travel Organizer for Your Electronics

Whether it be the rise of remote work or just the constant need to stay connected, electronics, gadgets, and countless cables have undoubtedly become part of our lives.

There's always something else we find ourselves needing to pack. These days, we're carrying larger items like power banks, iPads, and laptops, as well as small items and tech accessories like cords, phone chargers, and memory cards.

That's why having a decent travel organizer for your electronics and gadgets is more handy than ever. They keep your gear safe, secure, and well... organized. When you need that flash drive, BAM, you know exactly where it is. No more scraping through bag-lint at the bottom of your backpack before you realize that USB cable is no longer there.

I've broken this product guide into two sections; travel organizers for small items like memory cards, cords, and usb drives and travel organizers for large items like laptops, tablets, and external hard drives.

Don't worry, you don't need a bunch of travel cases, a selection of one of each should have you covered. Below is a summary table. But, I'll go into more detail about each travel case and accessory organizer further into the article.

The Best Travel Organizers for Cords, Cables & Small Items

So, here it is, my ultimate guide to the best organizers to keep your electronics in check while traveling. Let's start with the small items.

1. LowePro GearUp Wrap For Electronic Accessories

LowePro GearUp Wrap

Pros:

  1. Super lightweight
  2. Convenient form factor
  3. Secure straps
  4. Convenient attachment loop

Cons:

  1. Won't hold large chargers

Dimensions: 7.48 x 0.03 x 4.13 inches (19 x 0.08 x 10.49 centimeters)

Weight: 2.08 ounces (58 grams)

The LowePro GearUp Wrap first travel organizer comes from LowePro's great GearUp range.

While LowePro typically offers accessories for camera gear, this range is useful for anyone looking to organize their small electronics while traveling. That's because their functionality goes way beyond just managing digital cameras and accessories. You'll find loads of organizational features for other electronic gadgets including small pockets, small elastic loops for your charging cables, and peace of mind with padded slots for valuables.

Furthermore, products in the GearUp Range are designed to be lightweight, are made from durable material, and feature semi-flexible covers for easy access.

I'm a big fan of wrap style organizers like the LowePro GearUp Wrap. This design keeps your travel essentials like small cables, USB chargers, memory sticks, styluses, pens, and memory cards tight in one easy-to-accessible location that's easy to pack.

Travel organizer wrap

Inside this wrap you'll find padded slots and elastic webbing, as well as a larger zipped compartment. Also, the whole thing closes up really well with the aluminum clutch on the outside.

I use this particular organizer to store camera batteries, SD cards, and a few small essential cables for my smartphone and laptop.

2. BAGSMART Organizer Case For Smaller Items

BAGSMART Organizer

Pros:

  1. Holds several chargers
  2. Useful elastic bands for managing cables
  3. Convenient variety of organization options

Cons:

  1. Might be too large for some people

Dimensions: 6.3 x 1 x 9.5 inches (16 x 2.54 x 24.13 centimeters)

Weight: 3.2 ounces (90 grams)

The next small travel organizer is the Bagsmart. This isa useful zip-open tech case that can hold all your chargers, cables, and even small devices.

There are several webbed pockets and useful elastic bands that are great for keeping cords organized. This one is a little larger than some of the other travel organizers in this category, which is great if you have many chargers.

This electronics travel case is made of heavy-duty, water-resistant nylon. This is great for small spills but don't expect it to be a fully waterproof electronic organizer.

While this is certainly a great product with excellent reviews, some people have noted that the thin rectangle form factor isn't the most packable. However, this will depend on what kind of travel bag you are storing it in.

3. Amazon Basics Universal Travel Case For Small Electronics

Amazon Basics Universal Travel Case

Pros:

  1. Hard rigid travel case protects your electronics
  2. Good size for smaller items
  3. Cheap price

Cons:

  1. Not much flexibility for cords and cables

Dimensions: 9.8 x 2 x 5.9 inches (24.89 x 5.08 x 14.99 centimeters)

Weight: 9.6 ounces (272 grams)

This next electronics organizer; the Amazon Basics is a real favorite, especially for fans of a hard case. This is a great option if protecting your small electronic devices and chargers are a priority. That's because this case is made from a hard molded plastic exterior, with a soft fabric interior. In turn, this offers great protection when stored amongst other hard objects.

This is a convenient size for smaller items and comes in at an affordable price. However, there is only one size and one color to pick from. As a result, you don't get much flexibility in terms of customization. But, if you like a no-frills approach, it'll have your bases covered for the general basics like your SD Card, USB drive, iPhone charger, and cables.

Just keep in mind this one doesn't offer much in terms of managing cords. Unlike other electronics organizers in this list, you won't find elastic bands to keep your wrapped cords and USB cables in check. If this is a priority, I'd recommend checking out the LowePro alternative.

4. LowePro GearUp Pouch Electronic Travel Organizer

LowePro GearUp Pouch

Pros:

  1. Ultralight
  2. Great for organizing cords
  3. Packable size & shape

Cons:

  1. Too small for large chargers

Dimensions: 8.66 x 1.77 x 5.51 inches (22 x 4.5 x 14 centimeters)

Weight: 3.17 ounces (89 grams)

The LowePro GearUp Pouch is the next step up from the Wrap and is one of the best electronic organizers on the market.

Coming from LowePro, you already know the material is going to be strong and lightweight. The transparent top-case is also very useful since you can see the electronics inside the case without undoing the zipper.

LowePro GearUp Pouch

Another benefit of this one is the fold-out, flip cable organizer card with sturdy elastic straps. This is optional, but I keep it inside mine as it allows me to arrange all of my charger cords in one place.

Again, this is a useful pouch for smaller electronic accessories like a small phone charger, SD cards, cables, and SSD drives. However, won't fit a large power bank or full-size hard disk in here.

The Best Travel Organizers for Laptops, Tablets, Power Banks, & Large Items

Looking to revamp your tech accessory management? Pick one of the below best travel organizers for larger electronics like laptops, tablets, power banks, and larger electronic chargers.

1. LowePro GearUp Case For Large Electronics

LowePro GearUp Case

Pros:

  1. Organizes most large electronics with easy access
  2. Useful transparent cover & large capacity
  3. The best travel cord organizer in the round-up

Cons:

  1. Won't hold a tablet or a laptop

Dimensions: 11.42 x 3.15 x 6.69 inches (29.01 x 8 x 16.99 centimeters)

Weight: 7 ounces (198 grams)

Rounding up the top picks in small travel bags & organizers in LowePro's awesome GearUp range is the GearUp Case. This is the largest electronics organizer they sell and is perfect for most large electronic items. This one features a similar design to the GearUp pouch, but in a much larger build. There are also two large padded bags that replace the front of the cord organizer.

This section is perfect for hard drives, mice, or large power banks.

GearUp travel electronic organizer

I use the GearUp travel organizer case to store all of my large electronic chargers including my MacBook charger, my universal power adapter, and my battery pack. Even with all of these bulky items, this organizer still manages to leave enough room for my cables and hard drive.

If you're looking for the perfect travel organizer for all of your chargers, cables, and other travel accessories like a compact digital camera, this is it!

2. Matein Large Electronics Travel Organizer

Matein Electronics Travel Organizer

Pros:

  1. Fits most your electronics accessories
  2. Useful webbed and zipped compartments
  3. Great flexibility for cords and chargers

Cons:

  1. Won't store a laptop or iPad

Dimensions: 10.5 x 7.75 x 3.5 inches (26.67 x 19.68 x 8.89 centimeters)

Weight: ‎10.6 ounces (300 grams)

The Matein Large is another solid contender for the best electronics organizers for travelers. This one features three main compartments, each with varying organizational features for different devices and accessories.

With a double layer design, the main compartment has enough space for most of your accessories. There are inner elastic straps for pens and cords, as well as large mesh pockets that fit a mobile device and bulky chargers.

What's great about the Matein is that it is made from durable nylon that is splash resistant. It's marketed as waterproof but I wouldn't exactly be submerging this one in water. Regardless, it will save your valuable electronic gear from a bit of rain or a spilled drink.

Again, this one won't store a laptop or a tablet. However, it should have you covered for most of electronics while traveling if you purchase a separate case for those items.

3. iCozzier 13-13.3" Case For Laptops & Travel Tech

iCozzier 13-13.3 travel Case

Pros:

  1. All-in-one electronics organizer solution
  2. Fits a 13" laptop & an iPad Mini
  3. Useful webbed compartments and elastics for cords

Cons:

  1. Quite bulky

Dimensions: 14.17 x 10.24 x 1.57 inches (35.99 x 26.01 x 3.99 centimeters)

Weight: ‎9.2 ounces (260 grams)

Finally, travel case that will also store your laptop and tablet. The Icozzier is a popular all-in-one solution that looks like a slightly beefier laptop bag. However, when you unzip it, you'll find various organizational features including durable elastic straps for cables, and webbed-pockets for large chargers as well as small accessories.

The laptop sleeve compartment is also padded, ensuring decent protection for your laptop. In saying that, I'm not a huge fan of putting my laptop in the same bag as other hard items like chargers. But, if you're set on a single organizer solution, this is a great bet that is cost-effective and lightweight.

4. BUBM Double Layer Electronic ORganizer for Travel

BUBM Double Layer electronics organizer for travel

Pros:

  1. Great organizer for cords and cables
  2. Compact design for a larger case
  3. Fits a tablet or iPad

    Cons:

    1. Won't fit a laptop

    Dimensions: 10.24 x 1.18 x 7.48 inches (26.01 x 3 x 19 centimeters)

    Weight: 8 ounces (226 grams)

The last electronics case for travel is the BUBM Double Layer. This borrows a similar design from the Matein, in a slightly smaller form factor. No, you can't fit a laptop in here, but as mentioned above, many people don't like to do this anyway.

Instead, the BUBM covers most of your devices and accessories from iPads, cell phones, charges, cables, hard drives and more. It's also very light for a larger electronics organizer, coming in at just 8 ounces. The minimal soft-case design with durable zip at a decent price makes it great bang-for-buck.

If a zippered case with adjustable dividers in a dual compartment setup sounds like your idea of the best travel electronics organizer, then the BUMB Double Layer is the one for you.

Which Travel Organizer for Electronics Do I Use?

That's a wrap for this rundown to find the best travel organizer for electronics. If you haven't noticed already, I'm a huge fan of LowePro's GearUp Range. In fact, I use all three cases/pouches listed in this article.

This selection of three various sizes and shapes organizes all my equipment I need to work on the road. It even helps organize some of my photography and camera accessories like batteries, SD cards and the endless array of charges and cords.

30 Best Things to do in Medellín, Colombia

    1. Visit Comuna 13 - My Favorite Thing to do in Medellín

Comuna 13 is a neighborhood in Medellín that was once one of the most dangerous areas in the city. Today, it is a vibrant community with amazing street art, great views, and a lively atmosphere.

I put this activity first because visiting Comuna 13 truly is my most recommended thing to do in Medellín city. Taking an affordable walking tour through the comuna gives visitors the unique opportunity to learn about Medellín's history and be inspired by the positive change that has occurred over the past decade.

    2. The Botanical Gardens (Jardín Botánico de Medellín)

Visiting the Medellín Botanical Gardens (Jardín Botánico de Medellín) is one of the best things to do in Medellín on a sunny day. The gardens span over 100 acres and include more than 200 species of flowers and plants.

While I haven't seen very many, a lot of people say that this is the best Botanical Garden in South America, and even in all of Latin America!

You will want to see the unique Orquidoeroama Mesh structure, which is a genius design allowing for the collection of rainwater and protection of orchids and butterflies.

    3. The Cable Cars - Medellín Metrocable

One of the things that makes Medellín so unique is its cable cars– called Metrocables. There are actually four lines, but my favorite is Line K which connects the Medellín River to the steep hills of Santo Domingo Savio, a barrio on the edge of the city.

The ride offers incredible views of the city and is definitely one of the top attractions for visitors.

If you take the highly-acclaimed Comuna 13 tour above, you'll also get a trip on the cable car included (with a local guide).

    4. Wander Around Poblado

El Poblado is Medellín's most popular neighborhood. This is an upper-class area that attracts most tourists due to its sprawling shopping complexes, restaurants, and bars.

Chances are, you'll be staying in El Poblado anyway. So, take a walk around the neighborhood's streets and enjoy the view (or stop for a coffee or cocktail).

And if you're looking for what to do in Medellín at night, head down to Parque Lleras (below) for a lively nightclub scene.

Tip: Skip to the where to stay section for the top accommodation picks.

    5. Hike Up Cerro de las Tres Cruces (Hill of Three Crosses)

Looking for a way to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and do some hiking?

Walking to the top of Cerro de las Tres Cruces (Hill of Three Crosses) is one of the most popular hikes in Medellín. The hike to the summit only takes about an hour, and it's a great way to get some exercise while enjoying stunning views of the city below.

At the top of the hill, you'll find a large outdoor gym and workout area, which makes for the most scenic place to train in Medellín!

    6. Paragliding Over the Medellín Mountains

Looking for the most adventurous activity to do in Medellín?

Why not go paragliding over the city's stunning mountains?

There are a few companies in town that offer tandem paragliding rides, so it's a great activity for those looking for an adrenaline rush. Be sure to book your flight well in advance, as spaces tend to fill up quickly!

    7. Salsa Dancing

Did you really go on a trip through Latin America without trying salsa dancing? Truthfully, there's no better place to learn how to salsa than in Colombia's second-largest city!

Throughout the city, there are plenty of clubs and bars that offer salsa classes. Visitors will find many of these in or around El Poblado. However, you can also take a private lesson if you want more one-on-one instruction.

    8. Day Trip to Guatapé

Looking for the most scenic day trip from Medellín. If you read any guidebook, blog, or Medellín travel guide, you'll find a visit to Guatapé recommended (usually at the top)

Guatapé is a charming pueblo at the feet of the Andes mountains. It's located just outside of Medellín and therefore most people tend to visit on a quick trip. It's the perfect place to spend a day if you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

There are plenty of things to do in Guatapé, including hiking up El Peñón de Guatapé (the big rock with the famous, steep staircase), checking out the colorful buildings, and taking a boat cruise on the lake.

If you're looking for a Medellín travel guide that includes things to do outside of the city, then be sure to add Guatapé to your list!

    9. Hacienda Napoles Theme Park

While Hacienda Napoles was once a luxurious countryside estate owned by Pablo Escobar, it has now been transformed into a fun and very popular theme park. Here, you'll find a waterpark with fun rides and even a small zoo.

However, Hacienda Napoles is located a fair stretch from the city, and it'll take about 4 hours to get here! However, the drive out here is well worth it for beautiful country scenes.

    10. Choto's Cafe

As you might expect from one of the world's largest coffee-producing countries, the coffee culture in Colombia is huge!

You'll find loads of vibrant cafes ranging from small hole-in-the-wall nooks to upper-class coffee shops with a western hipster vibe.

However, if you're looking for the most unique cafe in Medellín, go check out Choto's Cafe in Comuna 13. Choto is one of Colombia's most famous street artists and is a community leader inspiring positive change through art. His vision is represented through his cafe, where you'll find street art and unique projects made from recycled materials by local kids and artists.

Tip: you'll likely stop by this establishment on a tour through Comuna 13 (number 1).

    Choto 13 Cafe in Colombia

    11. Medellín Graffiti Tour

Okay, I'm doubling up slightly here.

Yes, you'll see some of Medellín's best graffiti on the famous Comuna 13 tour. However, the truth is that the city is rich with amazing and vibrant art and it extends much further than just this district.

If you want to see great street art, head down to Laureles, Belén, or El Poblado.

    street art

    12. Plaza Minorista Market

This is one of the most vibrant markets in Medellín Colombia. If you're looking for souvenirs, traditional handicrafts, or a taste of Colombian culture, this is the place to go.

Wander through the stalls and haggle with the vendors for the best prices on beautiful things made by locals.

You'll find Plaza Minorista Market located right on the edge of the Medellín river near the district of Estacion Villa and just opposite the Parque Natural Cerro el Volador and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia Sede.

    13. Live Like a Local in Laureles

Looking to wander off the gringo trail in El Poblado and would prefer to stay somewhere a little more authentic? One of your best options will be the middle-upper class university district of Laureles (Laureles - Estadio).

Characterized by its lively atmosphere, interesting architecture, and trendy restaurants and bars, it's a great place to spend some time if you want to experience local life in Medellín.

    Laurales restaurant street Medellin

    14. Try Bandeja Paisa - (local Dish)

No trip to Medellín (or Colombia) would be complete without trying the national dish– bandeja paisa. This is a dish that originated in the Antioquia region and is a national staple!

This hearty meal consists of a large platter of food including beans, rice, avocado, plantain, chicharron (pork belly), steak, sausage, an arepa, and a fried egg.

While I haven't yet tried all these spots, this list should have you covered for awesome Bandeja Paisa in Medellín.

    • Maru Rico in Guayabal
    • Mondongo's (Poblado)
    • El Rancherito (nine locations)

    15. Explore Parque de los Pies Descalzos

Also known as the "Park of Bare Feet", this is a unique and beautiful park in Medellín. It's named for the fact that visitors are encouraged to take their shoes off and enjoy walking barefoot on the grass, stones, and water features.

This Medellín experience is meant to be just that, a tactile experience designed to let you get closer to nature.

The park is designed with natural materials like bamboo, stone, and wood, and it has a number of nice water features, including a river and pond.

bamboo trees at the barefoot park

    16. Join in on a Free Walking Tour

Looking for something to do in Medellín for free? Why not join in on one of the many free walking tours throughout the city?

There are a number of companies offering free walking tours, and they're a great way to learn about Medellín's history, culture, and architecture.

Of course, like with any "free" walking tour in Latin America, or anywhere in the world for that matter, you still should leave a tip to the local guide.

walking tour and Crowds at Comuna 13

    17. Watch a Game of Fútbol at Atanasio Girardot Stadium

Football (soccer) is a huge sport in Colombia, and there's no better place to watch a game than in Medellín.

The city has two professional football teams– Atlético Nacional and Independiente Medellín – and both have passionate fan bases and share the same stadium.

A game at the Atanasio Girardot stadium is an experience you won't soon forget. On the plus side, tickets are usually quite cheap, and you can pick them up at the stadium an hour or so before kick off. Just be ready for a rowdy and passion-fueled night!

    Football fans in Colombia

    18. Santo Domingo & Biblioteca España

You already know that the Line K Santo Domingo cable car route is my personal favorite. Hoewever, it's not just great views you'll get at the top.

Biblioteca España is a cultural center that's home to a library, an art gallery, and a performance space. The building itself is worth a visit, but if you're interested in culture and the arts, this is definitely the place for you.

Santo Domingo district in Medellín, Colombia

    19. Ride the Medellín Metro

Forget about what you think you know about metropolitan Medellín.

The Medellín metro is one of the most efficient, clean, and safe public transportation systems in South America. It's also incredibly cheap, and a great way to get around the city.

If you're staying in El Poblado, you can easily take the metro to any of the other neighborhoods. Taking the metro is one of the best ways to see the city.

El Poblado Metro Station in Medellín

    20. Visit Parque Lleras

If you're looking for a night out on the town, there's no better place to go than Parque Lleras. This lively park in El Poblado is home to some of the best restaurants and bars in Medellín.

It's also one of the most popular places for people to gather, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. If you're up for a beer or even a night out to the many nightclubs, this is the perfect place.

outdoor restaurants at Parque lleras, Medellín

    21. Day Trip To A Traditional Coffee Plantation

Medellín is located in the heart of Colombia's coffee country, so it would be a shame to visit and not take a day trip to one of the many traditional coffee plantations.

If this seems like your kind of activity, then I highly recommend booking a day trip.

On a tour, you'll learn about the process of growing and harvesting coffee, as well as get to taste some of the best coffee in the world.

    22. Antiquian Street Food Tour

For all the foodies out there, you already know South America is a gem for unique and delicious street foods.

In Medellín, you'll find some of the best examples of Antiquian street food like arepas (a type of cornbread), empanadas, amales, and much more.

I highly recommend the below street food tour. This is run by a local from the city and you will take all the guesswork out of finding the best stalls and vendors!

Book: E-bike street food tour with a local (the best stalls)

    23. Try a Crema (home-Made Ice Cream)

Crema is a homemade ice cream that you'll find being sold almost everywhere in the city. The people from Medellín associate crema with their grandmothers, as a crema is what the grannies would persuade the children with to behave!

For this reason, I was told by a local that he wouldn't purchase a crema from any stall or shop in the city unless it had a "grandma" name.

One of my favorites is the Crema de Guayaba. This a dessert made with guava, cream, sugar and spices. It's one of the most popular desserts in Medellín and can be found at many street stalls throughout the city.

It's definitely worth trying during your time in Medellín!

    Antioquian Ice cream

    24. El Centro (La Candelaria)

El Centro, also known as La Candelaria, is the historical center of Medellín and one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city. It's a great place to walk around, explore colonial architecture, and learn about the history of Medellín Colombia.

There are also a number of museums in El Centro including the famous Cada de la Memoria.

One thing you should know about El Centro is that it is recognized as being one of the most unsafe neighborhoods in Medellín. While the city is generally safe during the day, I'd avoid walking around El Centro at night.

    El Centro Medellin

    25. Go Quad Biking in the Colombian Countryside

If you're looking for an adrenaline-pumping activity, or just to get out of the city and into the Colombian countryside, then quad biking is a great option.

There are a number of tour companies that offer quad biking tours in the Medellín countryside.

The tours typically include transportation to and from Medellín, as well as all the necessary equipment. Below I've included a link to the best-rated quad biking tour in Medellín.

Book: ATV Trip in the Countryside (from Medellín)

    26. Parque Arví

A visit to Parque Arví, located in the hills overlooking Medellín, is a must for nature lovers. The park is home to over 15,000 species of plants and animals, as well as numerous hiking trails.

The best and cheapest way to get to Parque Arví is to take the Medellín metro system. From Poblado station, expect a roughly 1-hour journey to get to the park.

Firstly, you'll want to take the A line to Acevedo station. Next, transfer to the K-Line to take the metrocable to Santo Domingo. From here, transfer again to the L Line and get off at Parque Arví.

The park is open every day from 08:00 am – 04:00 pm. The admission cost to the park is free however tours within the park cost $40,000 COP for foreigners and $13,000 for national visitors.

However, it's generally a good idea to avoid Saturdays and Sundays if you can help it since this is by far, the busiest time to visit.

    27. Plaza Botero

One of the most iconic places in Medellín, Plaza Botero is home to 23 bronze sculptures from Fernando Botero. Fernando Botero is a Medellín-native and is one of the most famous Latin American artists in the world.

The sculptures were donated by Botero himself and they are all placed throughout the plaza. The largest sculpture, El Caballo (The Horse), is located in front of the Palacio de Cultura Rafael Uribe Uribe.

The plaza is located in the heart of El Centro and is a great place to people-watch, grab a tasty empanada, or take some photos.

    28. Museo de Antiquia

This museum is one of the most popular in Medellín and for good reason. The Museo de Antiquia houses a large collection of pre-Columbian artifacts from all over Colombia.

The Museo de Antiquia is located in the El Poblado neighborhood and is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 09:00 am to 05:00 pm. Admission is free on Sundays.

The museum is divided into four main galleries: Prehistory, Metallurgy, Pottery, and Stone. Each gallery is filled with interesting and unique pieces.

    29. Pueblito Paisa

Right before we round up this travel guide featuring all the epic great to do in Medellín is one more hill in the heart of the city. Pueblito Paisa is a tiny replica of a traditional Antioquian village and is is located named Cerro Nutibara.

This is a great place to visit to see colorful buildings and get a taste for traditional architecture. There is also a small museum on-site chronicling the history of the city.

However, perhaps the biggest draw to this attraction is the incredible view from the top. Due to the central location, you'll get amazing views over the city and its many comunas and barrios.

    30. Party!

Colombians love to party, and Medellín is one of the best places in the country to let your hair down and have some fun. For a great time, head down to Parque Lleras in El Poblado and start off with a beer at one of the outdoor dining areas.

Alternatively, why not let a local show you how it's done? Below I've linked to the funnest pub crawl in town! It also goes up to some of the best rooftop bars in the city, which is definitely worth it just for the view!

    What About Pablo Escobar Tours?

If you're a fan of history like me, then you'll probably be very interested in learning about Pablo Escobar when you're in the city.

However, the local people of Medellín really, really don't like talking about him, or celebrating his history for that matter. If you think about it from a Colombian's perspective, this totally makes sense. This man brought a lot of pain, suffering, and death to these communities.

For this reason, Pablo Escobar tours are discouraged in Medellín and in most of Colombia. Of course, you'll still find a few attractions and tours, but generally speaking, it's best to avoid them.

Where to Stay in Medellín - Accommodation Guide

The most popular area to stay in Medellín is El Poblado. This is the main tourist district and features plenty of great cafes, nightclubs, restaurants, and activities.

However, if you're the type who would prefer to detour from the gringo trail, check out Laureles (my favorite), Envigado, or Belén. Below are four great recommendations. However, I recommend checking out my detailed accommodation guide here for more options.

    • Elcielo Hotel & Restaurant - The ultimate luxury experience in El Poblado. This is the top-rated 5-star hotel in the city and combines lush greens with a modern wood interior for the perfect luxury ambiance.
    • 23 Hotel Medellin - A mid-range jungle-themed hotel with a roof-top pool and access to a hot tub overlooking El Poblado.
    • Hotel Casa Laureles - The best-rated hotel in the alternative neighborhood of Laureles. Excellent 4-star luxury for a fraction of the price.
    • Rango Hostel Boutique - Probably the best backpacker hostel in Medellín. Features an epic rooftop bar and plenty of co-work and common spaces to hang out.

    Is Traveling in Medellín Safe?

While Medellín was once the most dangerous city in the world, the city seems to have done a complete 180! Today, Medellín is one of the safest cities in South America and attracts thousands of tourists, ex-pats, and digital nomads.

Traveling in the city is generally very safe, as long as you keep your regular precautions and wits about you.

This means avoiding getting blackout drunk, wandering the streets alone at night, or flashing your riches in poor neighborhoods.

    Best Time to Visit Medellín

The city of Medellín has some of the most comfortable and stable climates in the world.

It's located in the Aburrá Valley (Valle de Aburrá), in the Central Cordillera Mountains of the Colombian Andes. This puts Medellín at an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level, resulting in a stable climate with an average temperature of around 22.2 degrees Celsius.

For this reason, Medellín has been nicknamed the City of Eternal Spring.

However, due to its sub-tropical climate, you will experience variations in rainfall throughout the year. Generally, the wet seasons runs from April to May and September to November.

The driest season is from December to February, which is also considered the best time to visit Medellín.

How to Get Around to All of Medellín's Attractions

If you've already read this travel guide, then you'll know that taking the city's well-organized and unique public transport systems are actually some of the best things to do in Medellín!

I highly recommend taking the Metro system to hop around the districts. If you want to head up and see some of the hill districts (including Comuna 13), then the cable car is also one of the best ways to get around.

Taxis and Uber are also found all throughout the city. I've found Uber to be a little cheaper, but taxis are also fine since they are all metered.
