Those who’ve made the trip over to Nusa Penida from Bali are chasing more than just the nightlife and wild party scenes. Nusa Penida is in a league of its own when it comes to world-class beaches and epic viewpoints.
In this quick guide, I’ll outline everything you need to know about the best beach on Nusa Penida, Kelingking Beach. I’ll detail how to get here, what to expect and throw in a few photos from my trip.

About Kelingking Beach, The T-Rex Beach on Nusa Penida
Kelingking Beach is located on the southwest coast of Nusa Penida, just before other attractions like the Peguyangan Waterfall. Its steep, jungle-lined cliffs plummet down to rich, turquoise waters. It's truly one of the best viewpoints I've seen in Asia, and definitely one you should check out if you're visiting Nusa Penida.
While the views from the top are incredible, you can actually also descend down the steep, bamboo steps to the base of Kelingking Beach. Here, there's an epic cave and powerful shore-dumping waves.
Near the viewpoint, there are a few opportunistic stalls set up where you can purchase snacks, fuel (bottled), and water.

How to Get to Kelingking Beach
By far, the best way to get to Kelingking Beach and explore Nusa Penida is to rent your own motorbike. You can get these from your accommodation or the many rental shops at the harbour port.
A daily rental costs between 50,000 to 70,000 rupiah for a decent scooter.
Alternatively, if you'd like to save the hassle of bartering, you can book one in advance on this scooter booking website for 50,000 rupiah.
The journey by scooter is only about 25 minutes from the harbour. Below I've pinned the exact location to help you find your way.

The roads have been revamped in recent years and it's now a lot easier to get around than on my first visit!

Alternatively, if you'd rather see the island on a guided tour, then you can also do that. There are many different businesses running tours from Bali to Nusa Penida but when booking, you'll want to confirm a few things:
- Ensure its a fast boat
- Ensure all fees are paid upfront
- Pick one with snorkelling at Crystal Bay, Broken Beach and a visit to Kelingking Beach!

The Kelingking Beach T-Rex Viewpoint (Secret Point)
Once you arrive at Kelingking Beach, you'll undoubtedly be approached by fee collectors. I'm not a huge fan of paying for natural attractions but this is the standard in Nusa Penida. Also, if it helps the local economy then I'm happy to pay it.
You can walk down to the beautiful viewpoint from the large, cleared area where you can park your motorbike. Immediately, I'm sure you'll realize why this incredible lookout is known as the T-rex lookout. The headland wrapping around the beach looks exactly like a T-rex!
Update 2022: This viewpoint used to go by the name "Secret Point". However, Kelingking Beach is now probably the most famous viewpoint on Nusa Penida, and even in Indonesia– far from secret.
From here, you can get great photos down the bamboo staircase. You'll often see some macaque monkeys chilling here and admiring the view too.
Update 2022: The photos you see of the old, rickety bamboo staircase has now been replaced with concrete steps. I don't know about you, but I certainly like the old rugged style better.
We wandered off to the right to get some unique perspectives too.
Tip: Visit at sunrise or sunset for amazing light and photo opportunities.

Walking the Stairs to Kelingking Beach
If you're game, take the steep and winding bamboo stairs all the way down to Kelingking Beach, probably my favorite beach on Nusa Penida!
Be warned though, the steps are a bit steep but easily doable if you take your time.
Once you're down on Kelingking Beach, make sure to check out the epic cave. The waves are can also get very large, with dangerous swells and rip tides. Only go in the water if you're very confident and you're sure that the sea conditions allow for it!
Update 2022: The steps are now much safer thanks to the concrete stairs and steep railing. There's no excuse not to head down now!

Accommodation: Where to Stay on Nusa Penida
Nusa Penida isn't a huge island, but there are several options to pick from when choosing where to stay. Below I've included my 3 picks for budget, mid-range, and luxury accommodation.
- Luxury: Adiwana Warnakali Resort - This isn't the most expensive luxury resort on Nusa Penida but it's definitely one of the best! This resort is waterfront located with large, luxury suites and an incredibly included breakfast.
- Mid-range: Jukung Cottage - This epic, beachside resort-style cottage retreat offers great bang for buck. It features a restaurant, an outdoor swimming pool, a bar, and a shared lounge.
- Budget: Hostel Bukit Sangcure - This is the accommodation I chose in Nusa Penida. It's a cheap backpacker hostel that is close to the port and offers breakfast and bike rentals.
