Guide to Visiting the Remarkable Cave in Tasmania

An up-to-date travel guide to visiting the Remarkable Cave on the wild Tasman Peninsula of Tasmania. Includes how to get here, what to expect and more!

The Tasman Peninsula is a spectacular place to visit for those travelling in Tasmania. Known for its untamed, rugged coastlines and rich history, there are plenty of reasons why you should check out this remote corner of Australia.

One particular attraction offering great value for time is the Remarkable Cave. This pristine sea cave is conveniently located on the southern coast of the Tasman Peninsula, close to other attractions including the Port Arthur Historic Site, the Cape Raoul Track and Mount Brown.

In this guide, I’ll outline everything you need to know about visiting the Remarkable Cave in Tasmania. Since there has been some recent construction to upgrade the site, there’ll be some important things in this post you’ll want to know.

Where is the Remarkable Cave?

The Remarkable Cave is located at the tip of a small coastal bight between the famous Cape Raoul and Cape Pillar at the south of the Tasman Peninsula. The cave is accessible via a roomy and newly constructed car park approximately 101 kilometres (1.5 hours) from Hobart, or 25 kilometres (25 minutes) from Eaglehawk Neck.

If you're visiting the Tasman Peninsula to see Port Arthur, then definitely plan a trip to Remarkable Cave too, since it's only 9 minutes south on sealed roads.

How to Get to Remarkable Cave

The drive to the Remarkable Cave car park follows sealed roads the entire way and is accessible by any vehicle type. The best way to navigate to the cave is to enter in the pin above, which is accurate.

Otherwise, head to Port Arthur Historic Site and then turn onto Safety Cove Road. Follow this road all the way to the end to reach the Remarkable Cave car park.

The New Staircase Walk

Once you arrive at the dedicated car park, you'll notice that this spot is a great hub for other activities including a couple of short walks and the recently upgraded Maingon Bay Lookout.

Apparently, the stairs leading down to Remarkable Cave used to be really steep and dodgy. However, recent upgrades have made the cave really accessible and safe. Be warned though that it is still fairly steep, but really only a concern for those with chronic issues.

Once you get to the bottom, you'll notice the wide elevated metal viewing platform. Here, you can watch the water flow in and out of the cave. Unfortunately, it looks like access to the inside of the cave has been restricted with these new upgrades.

I visited during low tide. However, on that day there was still significant swell and as a result, water ripped through the cave, making access really dangerous either way.

Car Rentals in Tasmania

The best way to experience the incredible island of Tasmania is to have your own car. However, rentals sell out quickly, especially during the busy holiday periods.

Make sure to compare prices across dealers in Hobart, Devonport and Launceston on RentalCars first.

About Remarkable Cave Tasmania

In my opinion, the Remarkable Cave is one of the best sandstone sea caves in Tasmania. The cliff has been hollowed over millions of years of heavy sea pounding.

Much of the boulder debris still lies beneath the entrance. This continues to be tumbled by the ebb and flow of the tide. It's a truly magnificent sound.
