After a long, hot day of exploring the City Walls and famous historic sites, beach hopping is one of the best things to do in Dubrovnik to cool off!

It’s no secret that Croatia has some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, and the country’s southernmost city is no exception. In this guide, I’ll reveal to you some of my favorites, from the stoney shores of Lokrum Island to secret sandy cave beaches you didn’t know existed.

Ready to dive into the list of amazing Dubrovnik beaches? Here's a useful map to help you navigate this post.

15 Best Dubrovnik Beaches

1. Beach Banje (Plaža Banje)

Banje Beach (Plaža Banje) is the closest beach to Dubrovnik's Ploče Gate and therefore one of the most popular beaches in the city.

This is a broad, fine-pebble beach lined with lounge chairs and sun umbrellas. As you'd expect, the water is crystal clear and great for swimming. During the summer months, you'll find a small floating platform to swim out to and relax under the warm Dalmatian sun.

There's also a famous establishment on the western tip called Banje Beach Restaurant and Night Club, or Banje Beach Club for short. Here you can enjoy a meal or grab a cocktail as the sun sets.

Banje Beach is also a popular place to book water sports activities like kayaking and hiring jet skis, with many vendors lining the shores.

Travel Tip: Ploče in front of Banje Beach is one of the best places to stay in Dubrovnik! The incredible Grand Villa Argentina in Ploče even has its own private beach!

2. Sveti Jakov Beach

While all of the tourists flock to Beach Banje, the locals hang out at Sveti Jakov.

This beach is less than 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the Pile Gate and is easy to reach on foot or via Uber or the public bus.

Sveti Jakov is arguably one of the most beautiful beaches in Dubrovnik. Here, you'll discover tall pine trees surrounding a small cove lined with fine pebbles and crystal clear water.

3. Betina Beach Cave

Looking for one of the most unique beaches in Dubrovnik? Look no further than Dubrovnik's very own secret sea cave, just a few hundred meters from the Old City walls!

The Betina Beach Cave is a magical cave with its very own small pebble beach with clear, shallow waters. However, travelers can only access this secret cave via the sea, as there isn't a path down from the road.

To get here, hire a kayak or embark on a sea kayaking tour from town, which will also take you to some of the other coastal wanders near Dubrovnik and Lokrum.

Tip: How to Get Around in Croatia

Rent a car! Croatia is very safe for motorists & the best way to explore the country. Rentals sell out quickly in the Summer months. Make sure to book in advance using a comparison site like DiscoverCars to get the best deals.

4. Donje Celo - Koločep Island Beach (Elaphiti Islands)

The first sandy beach on this list is the beautiful Donje Celo beach on Koločep Island, just northwest of Dubrovnik.

This is a beautiful stretch of soft sand lined with sunbathing chairs and sun umbrellas. The water is quite shallow, making it a great beach for swimming.

The beach backs onto a small spa resort called TUI Blue Kalamota Island, with its white shade sails and iconic blue pool a standout at this location.

The easiest way to get here is to book an Elaphiti island hopping trip from Dubrovnik. This is one of the top-rated activities in the city and will get you to many more beautiful beaches just like this one.

5. Lokrum Island Beaches

Lokrum Island is the large green island directly in front of Dubrovnik, just 500 meters out from the Adriatic Coast. Visiting the island is a great way to spend your day, with highlights including the famous botanical garden, Fort Royal, and Benedictine Monastery.

But, since it's beaches you're after, the island of Lokrum has them too.

The Lokrum Main Beach is the most well-known, found on the southwest corner of the island. This is a mostly rocky beach with some small stretches of fine pebbles. There are also some small cliffs to jump off!

Another beach on Lokrum is "FKK Beach " on the southeast corner. This is famous for being Dubrovnik's nudist beach!

Lokrum Island in Croatia

Want to visit the iconic Blue Cave? - While it is far from Dubrovnik, there is one speedboat tour running daily trips to the amazing natural phenomenon known as Croatia's Blue Cave on Biševo Island.

6. Danče Beach

Another local favorite, Danče Beach is hidden away at the end of a short downhill track leading from the Gradac Park, just west of Dubrovnik.

This beach is mostly a rocky shore and features a roped-off area with deep water that is perfect for swimming. Additionally, there’s a Franciscan convent church Sv Marija right next to the beach.

Danče Beach in Dubrovnik

7. Šulic Beach

Šulic Beach is one of my favorite beaches in Dubrovnik. While the strand isn't wide or impressive, it's the atmosphere that makes this one so unique!

Both sides of this beach are edged by high cliffs and rocky outcrops, dropping into clean, blue water. The cove forming the beach is also very narrow, meaning it's a great spot to swim in Dubrovnik, no matter the weather!

Also, the rope indicating the safe swimming area is quite far out, meaning this is a great beach if you want to swim laps!

Additionally, there's a small bar/cafe on the western side of the cove which is the perfect place to grab a cocktail and enjoy a warm summer afternoon.

8. West Harbor Beach (Kolorina)

West Harbor is a small jetty area tucked between the Pile Gate entrance to the Dubrovnik Old City and the famous Fort Lovrijenac. While most famous for kayak tour departures and for being one of the main Dubrovnik Game of Thrones filming sites, you'll also find a quiet beach here, called Kolorina.

This is a small, pebble beach with mostly shallow water surrounded by the City Walls and the steep cliffs beneath Fort Lovrijenac. The harbor sees a little boat traffic, so don't expect the most pristine swimming beach, although it is a nice spot to sit and relax close to town.

9. Copacabana Beach

Often named Dubrovnik's best beach, Copacabana Beach is a sandy-pebble beach dropping into deep, blue water. If you're looking for a beach to drink and party at, this is the one. It's a private beach club and a very popular place to visit in large groups.

You can hire your own private cabana, or rent some inflatables to go out and float in the clear, blue water.

Copacabana Beach is located approximately a 10 - 15-minute drive from Dubrovnik via Bus 10 or an Uber in the Babin Kuk peninsula.

Copacabana Beach in Dubrovnik

10. Bellevue Beach

Bellevue Beach, also known as Miramare, is a great place to go if you're looking to soak up some rays, swim in clear water, and cliff jump, without the hoards of tourists you'll find at some of the closer Dubrovnik beaches.

To get here, you can either walk the short 1.4-kilometer (0.9-mile) road from Pile Gate to Hotel Bellevue or simply get an Uber or Taxi there for less than 10 euros. Bus 10 also has a stop near the hotel. From here, simply walk down the staircase to its pristine shores.

This beach is also one of the best spots in Dubrovnik for cliff jumping. You'll find some great spots on the left side of the beach, accessible via a short swim. Additionally, if you're into water polo, you can even catch local athletes playing here.

Don't miss Croatia's Most Beautiful Beach: Stiniva Beach on Vis Island

11. Uvala Lapad Beach (Sunset Beach)

Uvala Lapad Beach, also known as Sunset Beach is another excellent choice for beachgoers looking for a mix of a sandy and pebble beach.

Located in Lapad Bay (Lapad Peninsula), Sunset beach features a waterslide and several bars and restaurants, making it a great spot for couples and families alike.

Of course, the beach lives up to its reputation as well! Uvala Lapad is one of the best beaches in Dubrovnik to watch the sunset as its shores face west, directly in front of Grebeni Island.

Sunset on the sea

12. Buža Bar (Bard Mala Buza & Buza Beach)

Dubrovnik is famous for its iconic beach bars, which remain a mix between an icon and a bit of a local secret. That's because while everyone knows about them, few find these awesome cliffside drink spots.

Buža Bar (Buza Beach) is tucked on the outside of Dubrovnik's city walls facing the Adriatic Sea. It's a small, rocky outcrop where locals have built a small bar. This is an excellent place to swim, have a drink, and even launch some flips off the cliff jumping spot.

To get here from the Stradun, walk past the Church of St Blaise, and continue down past the Hemingway Bar and the cathedral towards the wall. Enter the door and turn left. From here, you'll walk down a set of steps to the beach.

Cliff Bar in Dubrovnik

13. Coral Beach Club

Another great public beach on the Lapad Peninsula is the popular Coral Beach Club.

This is a famous fine pebble beach with iconic square shade umbrellas, rocky foreshore, and curved pier. There's also a nice wooden deck with comfortable lounges to relax on beneath the palm trees.

While the beach is known for its bar, this isn't a private beach, meaning you can come down here for a swim even if you don't want to buy a drink.

However, Coral Beach Bar is known to play great music and serve delicious cocktails, so if that's what you're into, it's worth a trip!

14. Sunj Beach

Sunj Beach, located on the island of Lopud is one of the only sandy beaches near Dubrovnik. This wide cove is protected by far-reaching headlands and its waters are crystal clear!

This region of Lopud Island is inhabited and is usually visited by travelers on an island-hopping boat trip. If you're looking for a Dubrovnik beach for kids, then this is a great option since the swimming area features shallow waters and a soft, sandy bottom.

Sunj Beach in Dubrovnik Croatia

15. Porporela

The last swimming spot on this list of Dubrovnik Beaches is the iconic breakwall located next to Dubrovnik's Old Harbour, right beneath the City Walls.

Porporela pier is a great spot to stroll down to if you're in Dubrovnik Old Town and looking for a place to swim. You'll find a small roped-off area just off the rocks which serves as the local swim spot beneath the historic St John Fortress.

About the Beaches in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is located on the Dalmatian Coast of the Adriatic Sea, one of the world's premier beach destinations. The water here is crystal-clear almost all year round and there are several great beaches to check out when you visit.

However, don't expect too many fine white sand beaches here. While there are a couple of fine sand beaches in Dubrovnik but most of the swimming spots near the Old City are either pebble beaches or rocky coves.

If you're in a rush, below I've given you a quick summary of the different beach options to choose from around Dubrovnik.

However, read on for more photos and information on how to get to each beach!

Pebble Beaches

Pebble beaches usually consist of rocky shores with small to medium-sized stones. These stones are usually quite smooth and are great to lay on. However, they're not quite as comfortable to walk on as sandy beaches.

Some of the best fine pebble strands include:

  • Banje Beach
  • Coral Beach Club
  • Bellevue Beach
  • Sveti Jakov
  • Betina Beach Cave
  • Šulic Beach
  • West Harbor Beach (Kolorina)
  • Coral Beach Bar
  • Bellevue Beach

Dubrovnik Travel Tip: Many of the beaches closest to the Old City including Banje Beach and Šulic Beach, and Kolorina can get crowded during the peak season (Summer Months). Therefore, if you want to find some more secluded beaches, I highly recommend this popular guided sea kayaking tour, which visits some of the beautiful small coves in the area!

Sandy Beaches

If you're looking for fine sand beaches in Dubrovnik, you'll need to book an Elaphiti Islands boat trip to nearby Lopud and Koločep islands or get transport to Uvala Lapad Beach on the Lapad Peninsula.

The best sandy beaches near Dubrovnik are:

  • Beach Sunj (Lopud Island)
  • Koločep Island Beach (Donje Celo)
  • Uvala Lapad

Chances are, if you're looking for a beach, you'll also be interested in finding some awesome swimming spots!

Where to Stay in Dubrovnik

With a population of only around 42,000, Dubrovnik isn't a large city. However, it does attract over 1.5 million tourists every year. As a result, you can expect many great places to stay in Dubrovnik, including resorts, hotels, and hostels for every budget.

The best area to stay is in or close to the Old Town (Stari Grad, or Walled City). This is where you'll find most of the attractions and highlights. However, staying just outside the city, or in one of the beautiful cliffside resorts and hotels is also a great option.

Below are my top-rated accommodation picks for the city of Dubrovnik, Croatia.

  • Bota Palace - Located in the center of the Old Town and a 3-minute walk from Buza Beach. This Bed and Breakfast offers beautifully decorated rooms, wifi, a kitchen, fridge, oven, and a la carte breakfast. A great pick for couples wanting to explore the city within the walls.
  • Hostel Petra Marina - With direct access to the local bus stop right outside, this hostel is just 200 meters away from the port and the perfect place to stay for backpackers wanting to explore Dubrovnik.
  • Rixos Premium Dubrovnik - A luxury choice for those wanting to relax in ultimate style. Modern-styled rooms with sea views and only a 2-minute walk to the beach. It offers a 2-story spa with features a Turkish bath and indoor pool.

A quick guide to finding the best beaches on Koh Tao, Thailand. From secluded, white sand beaches to sprawling party hubs, Koh Tao has you covered!

You might be surprised to know that some Koh Tao boasts some of Thailand’s best beaches!

Whether you’re looking for a great snorkeling or freediving spot, or just a scenic cove for swimming or cliff jumping– this updated Koh Tao beach guide has you covered.

Beach on Koh Tao Island

Koh Tao Beach Map

I spent just over two months on Koh Tao completing my Dive Master program, so I had plenty of time to check out these beaches and to make a good call on which ones would make the list. Keep in mind this list isn't in any specific order and will depend on what you are looking for.

Check out the map to find the locations of all of the beaches on Koh Tao in the list below.

Map with beaches on Koh Tao

Travel Hack: Click on the map of the Koh Tao beach locations above and it will load on your Google Maps app. You can save it by clicking the grey star at the top, which will add it to "Your Places" on your Google Maps account. This way, you have a handy digital app on the go with all the beaches pinned– just refer back to this article (or bookmark it) for the explanations!

8 Best Beaches on Koh Tao

1. Koh Nang Yuan

Koh Nang Yuan isn't really one of the beaches on Koh Tao, but a very small double-headed island about half a kilometer off the North-West coast of the island.

This is one of the most famous and recognizable photo spots in the Gulf of Thailand, with an awesome viewpoint looking over a skinny stretch of white sand connecting the two island heads– definitely a must-visit!

To get here, you'll want to jump on the epic day trip from Sairee Beach, since you need a boat to get here.

Koh Nang Yuan Beach on Koh Tao

2. Shark Bay (Haad Thien Beach)

Shark Bay is located on the Southern facing side of Koh Tao.

This beach is famous for its snorkeling and the Black Tip Reef Sharks that frequent the shallows in the early mornings. If you're looking to swim with the sharks, check out this post detailing how and when you will need to visit this beach.

The actual beach (Haad Thien Beach) is privately owned by the resort. You can either drive to the resort and pay for entry or simply enter the bay from the cliff side stairs.

The best route to access the beach is to head to OK2 Bungalows and walk down the cliff-side ramp until you reach the water.

Once you are at the water, there is a bamboo walkway over the jagged rocks around the side of the bay. You can either chill out once you reach the smooth rocks and snorkel in the bay, or keep walking around for some small little cliff jump spots of 2 -3 meters.

Shark Bay Beach on Koh Tao

3. Freedom Beach

Freedom beach is one of my favorite beaches on Koh Tao. This small, sheltered white-sand beach has epic turquoise water and a quiet surf ambiance without the waves. There are some hammocks hanging from the trees just behind the water's edge.

Freedom Beach, Koh Tao

Freedom Beach is on the opposite side of Shark Bay, and can be reached by riding about 3 minutes passed the turnoff to OK2 Bungalows. There will be a short stretch of dirt road before reaching the car park for a resort. Keep walking down and you will see a sign for Freedom Beach.

The owners of the small restaurant do a pretty great job of keeping the beach clean, so if you want to thank them, buy a drink or snack. Just remember to take your trash with you.

Freedom Beach on Koh Tao Island

4. Tanote Bay

Although Tanote Bay is on the other side of the Island from the hustle of Sairee, it is one of the most popular beaches on Koh Tao. This is largely due to the awesome snorkeling and cliff jumping.

Tanote Bay, Koh Tao

To get to Tanote Bay from Sairee, head towards Cha Lok until you see a large sign on your left. You will pass the small and only animal clinic on the island and continue up and over the hill. Continue straight on this road until you reach the end, where you will see a small dirt road that continues all the way to the beach.

This main road is one of the most scenic in Koh Tao, offering epic panoramic views. We found ourselves stopping most times along the road to check out the epic views of the island coast.

There is a large rock surfacing about 4m out of the water at Tanote Bay. This rock has some of the best snorkeling out of the other beaches on Koh Tao. You can also climb to the top of the rock to jump off into the deep water below.

Tanote Bay, Koh Tao

5. Hin Wong Bay

Hin Wong Bay is another epic bay with a small rocky beach on Koh Tao. This spot is a little quieter than other beaches on Koh Tao, mainly due to the monster hill that you have to ride up to reach it.

To get to Hin Wong Bay, ride towards Smile Mart from the Sairee Beach main area. Keep riding along this main road, past Smile Mart, and up the hill. It is quite steep and you will most likely need at least a 110cc scooter to get up this one.

Hin Wong Bay on Koh Tao

Once you've reached the top of the hill, you can check out the spectacular views of Sairee, before riding down the other side of the hill towards Hin Wong Bay.

Many people like to visit Hin Wong Bay for snorkeling or simply just relaxing on the rocky beach. There are also many dive boats that moor here when the weather is rough on the Sairee, Western Side of Koh Tao.

6. Cha Lok Bay

Cha Lok Bay is a large beach stretched by a long strip of white sand. There are a few boats moored up on this bay, but the water is clear and much better for swimming than the poplar Sairee Beach.

This beach is fairly easy to find as many dive shops are scattered along the stretch of the beach. To get to Cha Lok Bay, head towards Cha Lok town and keep riding past the turnoff to Tanote Bay. Once you reach Koh Tao Resort, you can walk through the gaps in the many resorts and dive shops and onto the beach.

Cha Lok Bay Koh Tao Thailand

Although the snorkeling isn't as good as some of the other beaches on Koh Tao, Cha Lok bay is great for spending the day on the beach or at one of the beach-side bars. This beach is also right next to the popular John Suwan Lookout.

Cha Lok Bay Koh Tao

7. Sairee Beach

Everyone heading to Koh Tao will end up at Sairee Beach at one point or another. Whether if it's for the famous Koh Tao pub crawl, or looking for dive shops to organize a Padi certificate with, Sairee Beach is the main tourist area of Koh Tao.

It's not hard to miss this beach, but I found the best spots were on the northern tip of the beach, away from the longtails and dive boats that are coming in and out of the bay.

Sairee Beach, Koh Tao

There are also some great bars along the stretch of the beach. Sairee is great for sunset, as you can watch the sun disappear behind the horizon.

Sairee Beach Sunset on Koh Tao

Tip: Make sure to check out the fire throwers who perform nightly along the stretch of Sairee beach.

8. Abandoned Resort Beach (Laem Thian Beach)

The Abandoned Resort is one of my favorite beaches on Koh Tao. A once-bustling resort is now empty and deserted. Due to the face that it takes around one hour to walk here, you will usually also have the whole bay to yourself.

After checking out the abandoned resort, you have the option of snorkeling in Laem Thain Bay, or cliff jumping on the other side of the bay where some tall rocks stick out of deep water.

Abandoned resort beach on Koh Tao

Where to Stay on Koh Tao - Accommodation Guide

There are several options for travelers wondering where to stay on Koh Tao island. Generally speaking, most people like to stay near Sairee Beach to be close to all the highlights and things to do. However, you can also stay near Mae Head, or a bit further up the mountain from Sairee as well.

To save you time searching the web, I've listed some of the best options for where to stay on Koh Tao below.

  • Best Luxury Pick: Jamahkiri Resort & Spa - a really great bang-for-buck luxury resort. Guests will find this one on the beachfront of Shark Bay in a quiet and secluded location away from the hustle and bustle.
  • Best self-catering villa: Phandara Pool Villas - a luxury option for those who want their own kitchen & pool.
  • Best Backpacker Hostel: Summer Guesthouse - located within walking distance of the dive shops on Sairee beach and of course, the nightly pub crawls– this is the top budget option with a great vibe.

Complete guide to visiting Bay of Fires Tasmania. A detailed list of things to do, places to see, where to stay and more. Explore one of Australia’s most scenic coastlines with epic photos of the one and only; Bay of Fires.

The Bay of Fires in Tasmania hit the global travel stage in 2015 when it was mentioned in Lonely Planet’s Top 10 Places to Visit in the World. However, Tasmanians have long recognised the Bay of Fires as being one of the most beautiful spots in the country.

Perhaps one of the most unique features of the Bay of Fires is the incredible coastal colour pallet. Rich, deep-orange granite boulders scatter the coastline on the banks of fluorescent, turquoise waters. Sweeping white-sand beaches carve the coast as far as the eye can see and weathered, wind-swept bushland hangs onto the edge of its shores.

After spending a fair bit of time exploring this unique Australian icon, I've formulated this comprehensive travel guide to the Bay of Fires Tasmania.

Here, you'll find inspiration and ideas for things to do, where to find the best beaches and rock pools, where to stay as well as information about camping and some photos that I hope will inspire your trip.

Where is the Bay of Fires in Tasmania?

Bay of Fires is located on Tasmania's North-East coast. The name refers to the long, 50 km stretch of pristine coastline from Binalong Bay in the south, to Eddystone Point on the northern end.

However, most people tend to visit the area between The Gardens and Binalong Bay for the most pristine beaches, clear-water rock pools and fun things to do.

Bay of Fires Map

Best Bay of Fires Tour from Hobart

If you're planning a trip to Tasmania, consider this epic 5-day adventure from Hobart which is one of the most popular guided trips in Tasmania.

This trip combines the rugged highlights of the east coast including the Bay of Fires and Freycinet National Park (Wineglass Bay) as well as wild rainforest and alpine highlights on the west coast including Strahan and Cradle Mountain.

How to Get to the Bay of Fires

To get to the Bay of Fires region, you'll need to head towards the town of St Helens, which is located approximately 165 kilometres from Launceston, or 252 kilometres from Hobart. St Helens is the main town on the east coast of Tasmania. This is a great place to stock up on food, get water, dump waste and book tours and activities in the Bay of Fires.

From St. Helens, you can get to the Bay of Fires by heading towards Binalong Bay, taking either Binalong Bay Road, C850 (sealed road) or Reids Road, C849 (unsealed road). When we visited, the main sealed road (C850) was closed due to flooding. So, we were forced to take the alternate unsealed road to access the coast.

Don't worry though, this road is fairly well-maintained and we had no trouble in our big van.

Binalong Bay is a small township within the Bay of Fires area. Most of the epic campsites, white sandy beaches, amazing rock pools and other attractions, activities, and things to do are found along the coast north of Binalong Bay, along Gardens Road (C848).

Car Rentals in Tasmania

Unfortunately, the cost of bringing your own car on the Spirit of Tasmania has skyrocketed in recent years.

Now, it is usually cheaper to rent a car on arrival. I recommend using RentalCars.com in Tasmania to compare rates for different vehicles across dealerships.

(Rentals are limited in Tasmania so it's a good idea to book in advance).

Bay of Fires Attractions Map

Below I've formulated a map with all of the highlights listed in this guide to the Bay of Fires Tasmania. It includes the best red rock pools, beaches, camping spots and points of interest.

All of the pins are colour coded to help you find the attraction you're looking for.

Things to do in Bay of Fires Tasmania

Initially, we had only dedicated a short two days to exploring the Bay of Fires on our Tasmanian road trip.

However, we quickly realised that this would be much too short. In the end, we stayed here for over a week exploring all of the best things to do in the Bay of Fires. Below are some of the highlights that I could recommend for anyone visiting the area.

1. Bay of Fires Walks

Since the Bay of Fires coastline stretches over 50 kilometres, covering it all on foot would mean a multi-day hike.

Luckily, there are some reputable tour agencies that operate in the area and lead walkers to the best spots on organised walking tours. Below I've linked to one of the best in the region.

THE GARDENS BAY OF FIRES TASMANIA

Self-Guided Walks in the Bay of Fires

If you'd prefer to take your own, self-guided walks around some of the Bay of Fires highlights, then I'd suggest having a car. This way, you can drive to most of the spots and enjoy walks along the coast.

Some of my favourite short Bay of Fires walks include:

  1. Rock-hopping from Swimcart Beach to Sloop Reef
  2. Walking the stretch of Taylors beach to the Gardens
  3. Bay of Fires Coastal Walk north of The Gardens

Most of these tracks aren't official "trails" and won't be found on maps or in tourist brochures. However, if you check out the points mentioned on the map, you'll easily find great walking routes along the coast.

2. Swim in Incredible Orange Rock Pools

If you've looked up photos of the Bay of Fires on social media, then you know that there are some very scenic, crystal-clear water rock pools in the area. There are loads of awesome spots to discover and all make for a great swim and fantastic photo opportunities.

I recommend just driving around the coastline stopping at the many pull-over points and accessing the beach and headlands. You'll quickly discover that there are hundreds of beautiful rock pools surrounded by orange-ochre boulders.

However, to help you find some of the best Bay of Fires rock pools, I've pinned them on the map found above. I've also included some photos of the spots below with GPS coordinates to make it easy for you.

BAY OF FIRES ROCK POOLS

Why are the rocks orange at the Bay of Fires?
The ochre boulders scattered along the Bay of Fires coastline are orange due to a combination of algae and fungus known as lichens. These lifeforms live together in a symbiotic relationship and create the orange colour you see on the boulders.

My Favourite: Cozy Corner North Rock Pools

  • GPS Coordinates: 41°13'01.4"S 148°17'05.6"E

After spending long days exploring the best of the Bay of Fires coastline, I think I found my favourite spot.

At the north of Cozy Corner (Cosy Corner), you'll find a secluded hidden beach with large lichen-covered orange rocks on both sides. If you continue north around the headland, you'll soon see a wide and hip-deep turquoise pool hidden behind the huge headland boulders.

However, you'll need to plan your visit here during high tide as the water disappears during low tide.

Suicide Beach Rock Pools

  • GPS Coordinates: 41°10'19.2"S 148°16'51.4"E

While not a very nice name, the south end of this beach near The Gardens has some of the best rock pools in the Bay of Fires. While not very deep, the boulders here are super orange. This creates a beautiful scene where you can swim or simply sit and enjoy the view for hours.

The Lone Tree Pools

  • GPS Coordinates: 41°14'52.3"S 148°18'43.8"E

The Lone Tree is an iconic tree located at the end of Binalong Bay. Whilst a highlight in itself (especially for photographers) there are also some great rock pools here where you can swim.

Unfortunately, the water isn't quite as blue in Binalong Bay as it is further up the coast. Still, it's a great spot and I recommend stopping by if you make it to the town.

The Gardens Rock Pools

  • GPS Coordinates: 41°09'44.8"S 148°17'03.1"E

The Gardens is a flatter region to the north of Binalong Bay and marks the end of the sealed road in the Bay of Fires. The area is a popular spot to stop and take photos. There are also some great orange boulders here to take photos of just to the right of the walking track leading from the carpark.

Sloop Reef

  • GPS Coordinates: 41°12'33.3"S 148°16'48.1"E

Sloop Reef is one of the most scenic spots at the Bay of Fires. Here you'll find crystal-clear waters and amazing views of the coast line looking north.

This part of the coastline features a higher headland than the rest, where people often camp. The entire area around this headland has some great rock pools to swim in, as well as some secluded, white-sand beaches.

Sloop Reef Accommodation: The Cove

SLOOP REEF TASMANIA

You might be mistaken in thinking that the name "Bay of Fires" originates from the unique orange boulders scattered along the coast. However, the name stems from Captain Tobias Furneaux, who sailed past the Bay in 1773 and named it after the hundreds of aboriginal campfires that dotted the coast. Indigenous Australians named the bay Larapuna and recognised the place as an important area for gathering, fishing and conducting ceremonies. You can still see ancient piles of seafood waste known as "middens" all across the Bay of Fires.

3. Visit the Gardens

As mentioned above, the Gardens marks the end of the sealed road heading north from Binalong Bay. It's also a popular spot for people to stop and admire the coast. There are bird nesting sites here, as well as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Bay of Fires: Fancy Reef.

The coastline here is mostly flat and more cleared than what you'll find further south. You will also find large private properties with horses grazing next to the ocean.

4. Go Surfing/Beach Hopping

By now, you've probably figured out that there are some ridiculously beautiful beaches in the Bay of Fires. One of the best things to do in the area is to go check some out.

For surfing, we noticed that Swimcart Beach and Cozy Corner had good breaks. Some other notable beaches in the Bay of Fires include:

5. Photograph the Lone Tree at Binalong Bay

I've already mentioned the Lone Tree in the rock pool section above. However, I consider a visit to the tree one of the best things to do in the Bay of Fires, especially for photographers.

In reality, the tree is not that special. It's simply just a twisted tree growing on some lichen-covered rocks. However, you have to admit that it makes for a great subject, especially when shooting frames at sunset.

Update: Unfortunately, as of November 2021, the lone tree at Binalong Bay is no more. I guess the Tassie winds were just too strong this time around. Rest in peace!

6. Experience Some of Australia's Best Sunsets

There are so many reasons why this region suits its name so well.

One of those is that the sky absolutely lights up every single night! I'm not sure what it is, or if we simply got lucky, but we found that the Bay of Fires offered us some of the best sunsets we've ever seen.

7. Freedom Camp Right Next to the Beach

I honestly couldn't believe my ears when I was told that the majority of the campsites in the Bay of Fires are free. There are also loads to choose from, ranging from sandy, beachside spots to isolated camping near the lagoons.

The Bay of Fires is best enjoyed over several days. That way, you can truly experience just how much beauty this region has to offer. Even if you can't, at least staying for sunset is obligatory in my opinion!

Bay of Fires Accommodation

Not planning on camping in the Bay of Fires and looking for a hotel or accommodation instead? Below I've summarised the best-reviewed and best deals you'll find for accommodation in the Bay of Fires Tasmania.

  • Driftwood at the Gardens - Driftwood is one of the best accommodation homes in the Bay of Fires offering three bedrooms, a TV, full kitchen and incredible ocean views from the balcony.
  • The Cove - Another incredible holiday home within 14 minutes of Swimcart Beach. The Cove offers three bedrooms and a full kitchen. Best of all, there's a great view of Sloop Reef from the balcony.
  • Bay of Fires Bush Retreat - The Bush Retreat is one of the closest accommodation options near Binalong Bay. It features a bar, garden and shared kitchen. You'll have the choice of booking bell tents (must see), large king rooms or a full family bungalow. This is the highest-rated accommodation option in the Bay of Fires!

Useful Tips for Visiting the Bay of Fires

  • Stock up on food and supplies at St Helens as there isn't much on offer once you reach Binalong Bay.
  • You'll find drinking water and black water dump stations at St Helens Recreation Grounds.
  • A National Parks Pass isn't required to enter the Bay of Fires. However, if you're planning a visit further north past Ansons Bridge, you will need to buy a pass as this area is within Mount William National Park.
  • Try to get in early if visiting on weekends as the best campsites can fill up fast.
  • Bring mosquito spray as sandflies and mozzies can get brutal when the sun goes down

Camping at Bay of Fires

While I've touched briefly on camping at the Bay of Fires in the above section on things to do, I also thought I'd note the best places to camp.

We spent our first night in our van at Swimcart Beach but quickly moved to Cozy Corner South when we saw there was a free spot with ocean views. We ended up staying here for quite a while since it was truly just so magical. Other free campsites in the region include:

  • Dora Point
  • Sloop Reef
  • Grants Lagoon

Campsite Access

Most of these sites are accessible by 2WD vehicles. However, expect unsealed gravel roads leading from The Gardens Road to each site. You don't need to book any free campsites in the Bay of Fires as it works on a first-in-first-served basis.

There are plenty of flat spots in nearly all of the campsites for campervans, caravans and tents.

Fires are also permitted along the Bay of Fires coast but collecting firewood isn't. Therefore, it's a good idea to stock up in St Helens if you plan on having a fire. Also, all of the campsites we visited had drop-toilets.

Wildlife At the Bay Of Fires Conservation Area

Tasmania is a wildlife-spotters dream! And, the Bay of Fires having its own conservation area status makes it no exception to this. If you're looking to spot some iconic animals, look out for:

  • Sea eagles
  • Tasmanian devils (very rare)
  • Black cockatoos
  • Wallabies
  • Pademelons

Remember, most of the wildlife will come out early in the morning! This is the best time if you're looking to take some unique nature photos.

Where is the best place in Australia to see wild cassowaries? Etty Bay Cassowary spotting isn’t exactly a major tourist attraction but more so a local secret! Here’s a quick guide that answers all your questions about visiting the cassowaries in Etty Bay and how to do so safely and sustainably.

Tucked on the Cassowary Coast’s rugged and wild coastline, just north of Mission Beach is a small natural bay mostly known to locals. While only being large enough to fit a small car park, a surf life-saving club and a caravan park, Etty Bay has become a hotspot for southern cassowary activity.

About the Cassowaries at Etty Bay

The Cassowary Coast region of Far North Queensland is one of Australia's best destinations for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. Unfortunately, backpackers and even the grey nomads often overlook this incredible destination.

Instead, many often rush past this beautiful spot en route to Cairns or the Whitsundays.

The truth is, there's so much to do on this coast– from Dunk Island and Mission Beach, seeing Australia's largest waterfall to exploring the last frontier, Hinchinbrook Island.

But. if you've found your way to this blog post, then you'll already know that it's also home to Australia's greatest cassowary population!

CASSOWARY AT ETTY BEACH

The cassowaries who frequent Etty Bay do so daily, wandering free through the beach at the edge of the rainforest. It's not clear why the Etty Bay Cassowary population has chosen to call it home.

However, it could be that much of the surrounding land has been cleared for rural properties. This forces the Cassowaries into the small pockets of virgin rainforest between Coquette Point and Mourilyan Harbour.

CASSOWARY AT ETTY BAY QUEENSLAND

Unfortunately, it's a sad reality when faced with the fact that best estimates indicate that only 1500 southern cassowaries remain in the wild. However, after receiving an endangered listing and being recognised in the Australian "back on track" framework, there's hope for the future of the southern cassowary.

Car Rentals in Far North Queensland

Cairns is one of the most popular travel destinations in Australia and car rentals quickly book out! I recommend booking well in advance. I always use RentalCars.com as they compare the widest range of rentals across dealerships in the Far North.

How to get to Etty Bay

Etty Bay is located approximately 40 minutes north of Mission Beach and 1.5 hours south of Cairns on the Cassowary Coast.

The closest major town to Ett Bay is Innisfail on the Bruce Highway. To get to Etty Bay, head south on the Bruce Highway from Innisfail until you see a left turn with signs to Mourilyan Harbour on Mourilyan Harbour Road. Follow this road for approximately 3 KM then turn left onto Etty Bay Road.

  • Google Maps Pin: "Etty Bay"

Next, follow Etty Bay Road all the way past the conservation park and down to the beach. You will see signs on the side of the road pointing to Etty Bay. Remember, this is a cassowary habitat and you need to drive slowly. Cassowaries often wander onto the road and rural properties.

Once you arrive, there is adequate parking all the way along the beach.

What is the Best Time To Spot A Wild Cassowary at Etty Bay?

The best time to see the Etty Bay cassowaries is during the early morning and late afternoon. If you are heading to Etty Bay in the morning, try to get here just after sunrise, between 7:00 to 9:00 AM. For afternoon visits, you'll get the best chance of getting an Etty Bay cassowary sighting between 4:00 and 6:00 PM.

During my recent visit, there were three cassowaries casually patrolling the beach at 4:30 PM, but they all headed for the shelter of the forest before sunset.

CASSOWARY PORTRAIT

How to Observe and Photograph Cassowaries Safely

The Etty Bay cassowary population is probably the "tamest" population in Queensland. This is due to their regular interaction with humans on the beach and at the caravan park. In saying that, they are NOT zoo animals.

They are wild, prehistoric creatures who have the means to cause serious injury to disrespectful tourists - don't be one of those.

CASSOWARY AT ETTY BAY

To observe cassowaries at Etty Bay safely, make sure to keep your distance and don't follow them around. They will wander up and down the beach, so pick a spot and wait, rather than stalking them.

Since the Cassowaries at the Etty Bay beach are used to people, they'll also often walk up to cars on the road and the car park. Just try to remain calm, don't move your vehicle and wait for them to pass.

Remember also, to NEVER feed wild cassowaries. We need the remaining population to be self-sufficient gatherers to ensure a future for them. Furthermore, feeding cassowaries results in an unnatural interaction between humans and the prehistoric flightless bird, which could result in aggressive behaviour.

Things to Know about Etty Bay Cassowary Spotting

Here are some more things you should know before going checking out the wild cassowaries at Etty Bay.

Don't Bring Your Dog

Dogs are one of the biggest risks to the wild cassowary population in Far North Queensland. Dogs often attack chicks and even adult cassowaries. For this reason, it's strictly forbidden for anyone to bring dogs to Etty Bay.

Biggest Threats to the Southern Cassowary Population

After some research on the topic, it seems that land clearing and habitat loss is the number one problem for southern cassowary populations. It's sad to see that much of the coast between. However, the majority of this damage occurred in the early 1900s with extensive land clearing for sugar cane plantations.

CASSOWARY AT THE BEACH

These days, QLD Parks and other conservation bodies are doing a great job of rebuilding the cassowary populations in Far North Queensland. However, the biggest risks that currently face them are dog attacks, habitat destruction by wild pigs and road vehicles.

To do our part, we should drive slowly, keep dogs on leads and support programs that aim to control wild pig populations.

Another one of the biggest things an individual can do to help the southern cassowary is to get behind initiatives that limit further habitat destruction. Below, I've linked several great causes and bodies to get behind, so check them out, share and donate.

Rainforest Rescue - dedicated to preserving the Daintree Rainforest

Kuranda Conservation - conservation for cassowaries and the other unique fauna and flora of the Kuranda region

Wet Tropics Management Authority - a body dedicated to protecting the World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics Region

What to do if a Cassowary Becomes Aggressive

I've been told that the Etty Bay cassowaries are very tame and used to humans. However, irresponsible wildlife viewing either by feeding, getting too close or stalking cassowaries and their chicks can cause them to get aggressive. These birds have huge claws that are powerful enough to do serious damage. There have been several recorded attacks by cassowaries and even deaths.

Again, while attacks are extremely rare at Etty Bay, if a cassowary shows signs of aggression, or walk towards you, slowly retreat. You can also use trees, cars or walls as a barrier.

Etty Bay Accommodation: Etty Bay Caravan Park

If you'd like to camp at Etty Bay, you can book a campsite for tents and caravans at Etty Bay Caravan Park.

This caravan park is tucked in at the northern end of Etty Bay beach and features amenities, including cooking facilities and powered/non-powered sites.

Your ultimate guide to the best Malta beaches from the main island, Comino, and Gozo.

With more than 300 days of sunshine per year, the Maltese islands are officially Europe’s sunniest country!

Combine this great weather with beautiful beaches, secluded rocky coves, and the crystal clear, Mediterranean Sea, and you’ve got yourself the ideal seaside vacation spot!

In this comprehensive guide, I’ll reveal the 35 best beaches in Malta, from Mellieha Bay on the main island to the far-flung golden sands of Ramla Bay on Gozo! If you scroll to the bottom of this post, I’ve also included a useful beach map to help you find your way around the coast!

Beautiful Sandy Beaches on Malta Island

1. Golden Bay Beach

Famous for its golden red sands and crystal clear water, Golden Bay is up there with one of the most popular beaches in Malta!

Located on the northwest region of the main island, this beach is also well-known for its water sports activities and incredible seaside resort, the Radisson Blue Resort– one of the best places to stay in Malta.

Car Rentals in Malta

The best way to experience both Malta and Gozo islands is to rent your own car! I recommend booking well in advance using price comparison sites like DiscoverCars if traveling in the busy summer season.

2. Għajn Tuffieħa Beach (Riviera Beach)

Situated just south of Golden Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa Beach is another sandy beach protected by a rocky headland. Here, you’ll find shallow waters which are great for swimming with kids.

While by no means a secluded hidden gem (more of these below), Għajn Tuffieħa is often much less crowded than Golden Bay.

Additionally, travelers will find a few walking tracks just above the sandy shores. The best one winds up to a View Point on the Il-Qarraba headland, providing spectacular views of the transparent waters of the Mediterranean.

Ghajn Tuffieha Beach in Malta

3. Gnejna Beach

Gnejna Bay holds another excellent sandy beach known for water sports and unique rocky geological formations.

This is a great option for those looking to do some kayaking, as just around the headland you’ll find some spectacular sea caves, known as Ta’ Marija Cave.

Gnejna beach in Malta

4. Mellieħa Bay (Għadira Bay)

Mellieħa Bay is one of the most popular beaches in the north of Malta. That’s because Mellieħa Bay is Malta’s longest sandy beach, with peaceful, shallow waters that are very safe for young children.

This region is also one of the best areas to stay in Malta, with some of the best seaside resorts and beach clubs located in this surrounding area of Għadira Bay.

Mellieha Beach in North Malta

5. Armier Bay Beach

Moving further north of Malta and we’ll discover some of the best secluded beaches on the island. Armier Bay Beach and Little Armier Beach are two beautiful protected coves on Malta’s northeast tip providing soft sands and clear water for swimming.

This is a popular spot for those looking to escape the crowds at some of Malta’s more popular beaches like Mellieħa Beach and Golden Bay. Furthermore, kayak rental stalls often operate on the beach here, which is perfect for exploring the rocky north.

Armier Bay in Malta

6. Paradise Bay Beach

The northern peninsula of Malta is where you will find the Cirkewwa Passenger Terminal for the Gozo Channel Ferry. While it seems contradictory, one of Malta’s most beautiful beaches is tucked just around the corner from this terminal!

Paradise Bay Beach is an incredibly beautiful bay that is perfect for swimming and snorkeling in scenic natural surroundings. In fact, the beach is so tranquil that you’ll likely forget that you’re right next to a ferry terminal!

Paradise Bay Beach in Malta

7. Pretty Bay Beach

Another stunning beach with surprising surroundings is Pretty Bay beach near Il-Bajja s-Sabiha in the south of Malta.

Pretty Bay is another sandy beach with several hotels and traditional limestone buildings dotting its shores. This is a great place for sunbaking, boating, or grabbing an ice cream or espresso at the many local shops.

Pretty Beach in Malta

While this beach is undoubtedly a great place to hang out, there is the unfortunate eye-sore of the Malta freeport in direct view. Nonetheless, the clear waters and nearby amenities mean that Pretty Bay deserves a spot on this list of the best beaches in Malta.

8. St. George’s Bay

As we make our way across the main island to the lively resort and hotel areas of Paceville and St Julians we’ll find the protected little cove called St. George’s Bay.

If you’re staying at one of the many hotels or all-inclusive resorts in the area, this little beach is well worth visiting! The waters are quite deep on this side, but the long, arching coast protects it from almost all wind.

St. George's Bay in St Julian's, Malta

9. Balluta Bay Beach

Similarly to St. George’s Bay, Balluta Bay Beach is a popular little sandy beach located smack-bang in the heart of the busy St Julian’s resort area.

This is a good spot for a quick swim or, head over to the Balluta Watersports stall and rent a jet ski!

Balluta Bay in Malta

Tip: Balluta Bay & St. George’s Bay can get very busy due to their central locations. However, if you walk north around the bay in Balluta, you’ll find another small rocky beach called Exiles Beach, a small local hidden gem.

10. Malta Freeport Beach

Another unlikely location to have a beautiful white sand beach, Malta Freeport Beach is surprisingly a nice and very unique place to swim!

Situated directly opposite the busy port, this little strip of sand makes for an excellent place to stretch out on a towel or go for a quick swim away from the crowds at nearby Pretty Bay.

11. Imġiebaħ Beach

Looking for a secluded cove without tourists? A great spot is Imġiebaħ Beach, a quiet and remote beach with clear water situated on Malta’s northeast shore, not far from Mellieħa Bay.

This one is definitely more of a local’s beach, and one of my absolute favorites in Malta!

Imġiebaħ Beach, Malta

12. St. Thomas Bay Sandy Beach

St. Thomas Bay is an excellent sandy beach located between the beautiful villages of Marsaskala and the famous fishing village of Marsaxlokk on Malta’s east coast.

This is another local favorite, with a few rocky shores and sections of beautiful sandy beaches hidden to the south beneath the Munxar cliffs.

13. Ramla tal-Qortin & Ramla tal-Bir

While there are plenty of picturesque sandy beaches in the archipelago, what truly makes Malta unique is its amazing limestone shorelines. One of my favorite spots to hang out on the rocks and snorkel in deep, clear water are the two bays surrounding the former Ramla Bay Resort (currently under renovation).

These are known as Ramla tal-Bir and Ramla tal-Qortin, or the Ramla Bays of northern Malta island. Not to be confused with the famous Ramla Bay on Gozo, these two scenic bays both have a long, flat rocky shore perfect for summer picnics.

The water is also crystal clear here, and one of the best beaches in Malta for snorkeling!

Ramla Beach Malta

14. Anchor Bay (Popeye Village)

On the opposite side of Mellieħa, across the narrow, isthmus-like section of Malta’s main island lies the former film-set turned theme park known as Popeye Village of Anchor Bay.

Many tourists visit Popeye Village to see the set, but not many are aware that this is also a great place for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving! Just below the cliff to the south of the village is a sheltered area providing easy access to the water, and a great place to have a barbecue or picnic.

Anchor Bay Malta

Additionally, sunset chasers will definitely want to head to this spot during the golden hour, as this is the ideal place to catch a sunset, with spectacular views of the sun sinking below the Mediterranean horizon.

15. Qarraba Bay

Qarraba Bay is a rocky area wedged between Gnejna and Għajn Tuffieħa beaches. This spot is one of the most scenic in Malta, with unique limestone cliff formations unlike anywhere else on the island.

I recommend renting a Kayak at one of the nearby beaches and visiting this bay, which is usually only accessible from the sea. Additionally, the nearby Ta’Babu Cove and the protruding rock makes for an excellent snorkeling spot!

Qarraba Bay Malta

16. Ghar Lapsi Beach

Ghar Lapsi is a remote area in the very south of Malta’s main island. While often missed by most tourists, this location features some scenic coastal walking tracks, passing some spectacular beaches complete with sea caves and clear blue waters.

Ghar Lapsi Beach in Malta

17. Zurrieq Valley Sea Inlet

While most tourists will visit Wied iz-Zurrieq for the opportunity to explore the incredible Blue Grotto, the tiny rocky inlet near the Blue Grotto boat service is also a spectacular place to swim in Malta.

These rocky shores are very picturesque, with sharp drops into deep water, making for a great cliff jumping spot. Additionally, scuba divers will not want to miss the nearby Um El-Faroud wreck, which is one of the best wreck dive sites in Malta.

Zurrieq Valley Sea Inlet

18. Il-Kalanka

Next up is my favorite rocky beach in Malta, the pristine Il-Kalanka bay near Marsaxlokk in eastern Malta. This one is situated near the very end of Il-Kalanka point, near the lighthouse.

This bay is one of the most beautiful beaches in Malta, complete with deep, calm water to jump in straight from the limestone rocks. Furthermore, there are steel ladders fixed around the bay, making for easy access and a lot of fun!

Il Kalanka Beach in Malta

19. St. Peter’s Pool

Malta is renowned for its spectacular natural pools. One of the very best is found just north of Il-Kalanka beach and is known as St. Peter’s Pool. This is a horseshoe-shaped natural swimming pool with deep, crystal-clear water.

Many tourists and locals will head down to this pool in the summer months to relax and jump off the limestone rocks into the pool. If you’re up for some fun and adventure, St. Peter’s Pool is a great place to visit on your Malta beach-hopping itinerary.

St Peter's Pool in Malta

20. Il-Ħofra l-Kbira & Ta Kalanka Sea Cave

Heading north from Kalanka Point, on the small peninsula located between Marsaxlokk and St. Thomas Bay is a secluded rocky beach that is very little-known by tourists.

Accessible only via a single road leading out to the headland, here you’ll discover an incredible rocky beach complete with a large sea cave, providing excellent shelter during the hot summer days on Malta island.

Malta sea cave beach

21. Coral Lagoon

In terms of hidden gems, they don’t get much better than the Coral Lagoon. Appropriately named, this collapsed sea cave is a unique geological natural pool etched into the limestone cliffs on Malta’s northern point.

You’ll need a kayak or boat to access this one, but once inside you’ll discover one of the most tranquil places in Malta. The lagoon is filled with azure water and corals, and is deep enough to swim and snorkel.

Coral Lagoon

22. Qawra Point Beach

Travelers staying in the buzzling Buġibba area will certainly want to add Qawra Point to their list of beaches to visit in Malta.

This rocky coastline is hidden at the tip of the bay, just beneath the famous Cafe del Mar beach bar. There’s plenty of space to relax here, and plenty of access to the deep bay.

Qawra Point in Malta

23. Buġibba Perched Beach

The main beach in Buġibba is really a sandy one, but the sand is artificial, placed on a beautiful rocky shoreline lined with palm trees and resorts. This beach is quite busy but is a great place to swim and lounge beneath a sun umbrella with a cocktail.

Buggiba Beach

24. Mistra Bay

Across the bay from Buġibba is a quiet, rocky coastline area known as Mistra. Mistra Bay Beach, while certainly not as vibrant as its immediate neighbors, it provides a tranquil place to relax or rent a kayak from.

Amazing Beaches on Comino Island

25. Blue Lagoon

Comino’s Blue Lagoon is Malta’s most notable natural attraction. Picture iconic orange limestone cliffs dropping into some of the clearest waters you’ve ever seen.

Located on the smallest island, Comino, and only via a boat trip from Malta or Gozo, Blue Lagoon also has one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the country! One of the best ways to get to the Blue Lagoon is to book the popular Blue Lagoon & Comino Caves trip, which is great value for money.

Blue lagoon in Malta

26. Crystal Lagoon

While not as famous or well-known as the Blue Lagoon, Comino’s Crystal Lagoon is arguably just as beautiful. This picturesque bay is situated on the southwest corner of the tiny island and is often missed by tourists.

Here, you’ll discover a deep bay with crystal clear waters surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. There’s also a small pebble beach at the edge of the bay, providing a great place to relax as well.

Malta Crystal Lagoon

27. St Niklaw Bay

Travelers taking the ferry or boat trip to the Blue Lagoon will likely soon realize just how busy this place gets. If you’re looking for a Malta beach to escape the crowds from on Comino, take the short island walking trail to St. Niklaw Bay, just a few hundred meters from the Blue Lagoon.

This bay has a small sandy beach with turquoise waters– great for swimming or snorkeling!

Saint Niklaw Bay on Comino Island, Malta

28. Santa Maria Bay

Besides the Blue Lagoon, Santa Maria Bay (Santa Marija Bay) is the most popular beach on Comino Island. The waters here are quite shallow, with a long stretch of white sand lining its shores.

The color of the water in this bay is unbelievably blue, providing excellent conditions for snorkeling. Additionally, visitors will have the option of taking a short walk over to the Santa Maria Caves, which are a must-visit attraction on Comino!

29. Ħondoq ir-Rummien

Starting directly across the channel from Comino over to Malta’s sister island; Gozo we have the picturesque and compact beach named Hondoq Bay (Ħondoq ir-Rummien Bay).

This is a very small beach with soft sands, protected by rocky outcrops on either side. Furthermore, there are several water sports companies operating here, so you have the option of water skiing, kayaking, or renting a SUP!

Hondoq Bay in Malta

30. Ramla Beach (Ramla Bay)

Perhaps one of the most famous beaches in Malta, Ramla Bay Beach is a spectacular stretch of red sand overlooking the northern shores of Gozo Island.

Similarly to Mellieħa on the main island, the shallow water here makes it the perfect place for water sports or for enjoying a day at the beach with the family.

Additionally, Ramla Bay is known for its adjacent caves, Calypso’s Cave, and the spectacular viewpoint cave called Tal-Mixta Cave– go check them out!

31. Wied Il-Għasri

My personal favorite beach on Gozo Island, Malta is Wied Il-Għasri. This is one of the most scenic rocky inlets in the Maltese Islands and features a minuscule sandy beach entering into a snaking river-like canyon leading to the Mediterranean Sea in the north.

The Wied il Ghasri cove also contains several surrounding underwater caves, which makes it a popular spot for scuba divers and snorkelers.

32. Inland Sea

The Inland Sea might not appear on all lists of Malta’s best beaches, but I’d say it’s one of the most unique! This is a magnificent natural saltwater lagoon situated in Dwejra Bay on the island of Gozo’s rugged west.

This shallow semi-circular lagoon is lined by a thin, pebble beach and is often dotted with small fishing boats laying anchor during rough seas.

Inland Sea Beach on Gozo Island

33. The Blue Hole

Malta’s Blue Hole is another spectacular rock formation right next to the famous Inland Sea in Dwejra Bay (Gozo).

While not a traditional beach, it is a great place to swim and snorkel, as this awesome vertical underwater tunnel is filled with crystal clear water! This is also located right beneath the former Azure Window!

Blue Hole in Malta

34. Xlendi Beach

Xlendi Beach in Gozo’s lively Xlendi township is an excellent place to visit if you’re chasing beach bars, caves, and an overall chill vibe.

While the beach here is very small, travelers will want to check out the cliffside walking trails leading to a nearby cave and cliff-jumping spot! Afterward, go check out the nearby salt pans or grab a drink at one of the many seaside bars.

Xlendi Beach in Malta

35. Mġarr ix-Xini

Looking to get off the beaten path on your Gozo beach hopping itinerary? If you’re visiting during the high season, make sure you include a visit to Mġarr ix-Xini.

This is a sheltered bay similar to Wied Il-Għasri but attracts a fraction of the tourists. Due to the high, fjord-like cliffs, this bay is usually very sheltered, even during bad weather.

Furthermore, beachgoers in Malta can enjoy the small pebble strand or the many flat rocks around it, providing a great place to sit down with friends and family.

Malta Accommodation Guide – Where to Stay Near the Beach

While visitors will find hotels and resorts scattered all over Malta’s islands, the most popular neighborhoods to base yourself in Malta include Valletta, Sliema & St Julian’s, Mellieħa Bay, and Gozo Island.

Travelers also have a broad variety of accommodation types, from 5-star resorts to traditional terraced boutique hotels. To save you time searching, below are the four best accommodation picks for Malta, based on location, reviews, and my personal experience.

  • St Julian’s & Sliema Area: The Hilton
This is Malta’s premiere resort, located at the heart of the picturesque Portomaso Marina. This is a great pick if you’re trying to balance great location with utmost luxury.
  • Valletta: Iniala Harbour House
Perched atop Valletta’s stunning St Barbara Bastion, this incredible boutique experience is well-regarded as one of the best accommodation options in Malta. The experience offers stunning views of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities from traditional Maltese balconies.
  • Mellieħadb Seabank Resort
The db Seabank is well-regarded as the best resort in the calmer Mellieħa area. Situated just feet from the white sandy shores of Malta’s longest beach, this complete all-inclusive hotel offers features five restaurants, a fitness center, a spa, multiple pools, and even a bowling alley!
  • GozoQuaint Boutique Hotel (Nadur)
Accommodation on Malta’s quieter sister island should reflect its more peaceful and traditional ambiance. This beautifully renovated boutique hotel is situated directly beside the Nadur Parish Church, with spacious balcony terraces looking over the town square.

Travel tip: Accommodation in Malta sells out quickly, especially for the summer vacation period. This is a location where you do not want to book at the last minute!

Useful Beach Resources for Malta

Below are some useful resources that’ll serve you well as you explore the spectacular beaches in Malta, Gozo, and Comino!

The Blue Flag Beaches in Malta

This flag system is one of the world’s most recognized voluntary awards for beaches, awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to beaches that meet environmental standards. There are several blue flag beaches in Malta, including

  • Mellieħa Bay
  • St George’s Bay
  • Qawra Bay
  • Golden Bay
  • Paradise Bay
  • Ghajn Tuffieha
  • Ramla Bay (the beach in Gozo)
  • Hondoq ir-Rummien

How to get to the Beaches in Malta

By far, the best way to explore the Maltese islands is to rent a car. However, during the busy summer months, cars can sell out quickly. I recommend comparing prices across dealerships in St Julian, Mellieħa, and the International Airport on a comparison site like DiscoverCars.

Alternatively, you can always use Malta’s well-connected public transport bus network– just plan ahead for the return trip!

Common Jellyfish

Due to rising sea levels in the southern Mediterranean, Malta suffers from a growing jellyfish problem.

Luckily, these stingers are not dangerous, but some regular culprits like the Mauve Stinger can leave a slight burn.

Luckily, there is a useful map that tourists can check out showing the best beaches in Malta to avoid jellies, based on weather conditions like wind and waves. Additionally, this map will show information about rough weather and give advice on the best beaches to visit during the summer months in Malta.

Discover Golden Bay in Malta, one of the most beautiful golden sand beaches in the archipelago.

Famous for its red sands and crystal clear water, Golden Bay is up there with one of the most popular beaches in Malta.

In this guide, I’ll detail everything you need to know about visiting this beach, including up-to-date information about how to get here, what to expect, and some quick tips to make the most of your visit!

About Malta's Golden bay

Golden Bay is one of Malta's most popular beaches. It's famous for its soft, red sands that emanate a golden glow during sunset in the summer months.

Many tourists and locals visit Golden Bay as is one of the best beaches for swimming on the island. Its high, rocky cliffs provide very good shelter from the winds and its long, deep bay is great for water sports like jet skiing and sea kayaking.

This beach is rated as "Blue Flag", by the FEE flag rating system, meaning it has a high level of safety and plenty of amenities.

Directly above the beach is one of Malta's best resorts– the Radisson Blue Resort, which is a great option if you want to stay somewhere out of the main tourist areas in the Maltese Islands.

Where is Golden Bay?

Golden Bay is located just a short distance from the nearby Gnejna Bay and Ghajn Tuffiha Bay on the northwest coast of Malta. The closest town is the village of Maikata, just a short drive or bus from Mellieha Bay.

The beach is located in a section known as il-Majjistral Nature Park.

Below I've pinned the exact location of Golden Bay to make it easier to find.

How to Get to Golden Bay Beach

There are three main options for reaching Golden Bay from other popular areas of Malta like Mellieha Bay, Valletta, Sliema, or St. Julian's.

1. Golden Bay by Malta Catamaran Tour

By far, the most scenic way to experience the beauty of Malta's coast is to do so from the sea.

There is one catamaran sailing tour that you can book on GetYourGuide, stopping at some of the most iconic highlights including Comino and the Blue Lagoon, the Crystal Lagoon, Popeye Village, and of course, the golden sands of Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa.

These trips depart from St. Paul's Bay and Bugibba and have nearly 2000 5-star reviews!

2. Golden Bay By Bus

The best and most convenient public transport option to Golden Bay is to take the Route 225 bus line to Għajn Tuffieħa Bus Terminus.

This bus will pass through Sliema, St Julians, Qawra, Buġibba, and St. Paul’s Bay. For those staying in Valletta, you can take the 250 or 42 bus to St. Paul's Bay, then jump on the 225 to Golden Bay.

3. Self-Drive to Golden bay

There's no doubt. Having your own rental car in Malta is going to give you the best and most flexible travel experience on the islands!

I recommend comparing prices on DiscoverCars to get a great deal across all of the dealerships on Malta and Gozo.

Once you've got your set of wheels, you'll want to drive to the pin above. Driving these roads is quite easy as it is a much quieter region compared to Valletta or Mellieha Bay.

You'll find a parking area near the beach (close to the Radisson Golden Sands hotel), as well as a second option just north of this.

Golden Bay Malta - What to Expect & This Epic Beach

We visited Golden Bay during the summer months on a particularly hot day in Malta. As a result, the beach was absolutely packed– far from the secluded beaches, you'll find in the north or on Gozo.

However, it's undeniable that this beach really is beautiful. From the top near the bus stop and car park, you'll get great views of the beach and surrounding cliffs. There's a snack bar, ice cream bar, and small cafe just a short distance from here, which is great if you want to cool down as well.

On the beach, there were loads of tourists baking in the sun and swimming in the shallow waters of the bay. While the sand is very comfortable, there are tiny pebbles closer to the water's edge.

Horse Riding at Golden Bay

The main reason we visited Golden Bay was to go on the famous horse riding activity. We had a group booking and our guides led us to some of the high cliffs just north of Golden Bay, where we passed the beautiful rocky coast for breathtaking views of the beach and the Mediterranean Sea.

From here, we could also see the famous Għajn Tuffieħa tower dominating the headland just south of the bay.

This was one of Haylea's favorite experiences on Malta, and I would certainly recommend this company.

5 Tips for Visiting Golden Bay

As promised, below are five useful tips you'll want to consider when planning your visit to the red sands of Golden Bay beach.

  1. Come early - this is a very popular beach. When we visited it was much too crowded for our liking.
  2. Hire a kayak - you can easily hire a sea kayak at Golden Bay. In good conditions, you'll want to kayak around the headland to Għajn Tuffieħa bay.
  3. Parking - if the parking lot is full, there is parking space pinned on Google maps as "Designated Street Parking"– just a 5-10 minute walk from the beach
  4. Check the weather - during westerly winds, this beach will not be so nice for swimming. Instead, you'll want to head to one of the coves on Malta's east coast.
  5. Don't swim during red flags - Malta uses a flag system to alert swimmers of dangerous conditions. Red means don't swim!

Discover the incredible secluded inlet of Wied il-Ghasri Beach on Gozo Island, Malta.

Gozo Island is full of amazing hidden gems! One of my absolute favorite spots on the island to relax and enjoy swimming in the Mediterranean Sea is the scenic, fjord-like cove of Wied il Ghasri (Wied il-Għasri).

In this quick guide, I’ll reveal everything you need to know about one of the most scenic inlets in Malta. I’ll show you exactly how to get here, what to expect, and what you can’t miss in the surrounding area.

Wied Il-Ghasri Bay and Beach on Gozo, Malta

About Wied Il Ghasri Beach

For photographers and nature lovers, Wied il-Ghasri is likely already high on your list of epic places to visit on Gozo.

The beach lies in the L-Għasri Valley and connects to the open sea via a thin, snaking cove of deep water edged by high limestone cliffs. You'll likely have seen this beautiful coastal gorge on social media or in tourism campaigns because it really is one of the most beautiful spots in Malta!

At the end of the inlet, you'll discover a picturesque, tiny pebbly beach with easy access to the water.

The Wied il Ghasri cove also contains several surrounding underwater caves, which makes it a popular spot for scuba divers (more on this below).

Where is Wied Il Ghasri Beach?

Wied il Ghasri beach is located on the very northern tip of Gozo Island, Malta. It is known as the Għasri Valley, which begins at Ta’ Dbieġi Hill and winds down through the village of l-Għasri towards the open sea on the north coast of Gozo.

There is a road leading to a short walking track that descends down to its pebbly shores. There is a decently-sized dedicated parking area just near the track. However, it's not as big or developed as you'll find at the Blue Hole or Inland Sea.

Below I've pinned the exact location to help you find it.

How to Get to Wied Il Ghasri on Gozo

Below are the three best ways to reach Wied il-Ghasri bay on Gozo.

1. Wied il-Ghasri on the Epic Gozo Quad Bike Tour

Travelers staying on the main island of Malta and looking to see the best of Gozo on a single day will definitely want to check out the Full Day Quad Tour on Get Your Guide.

You'll get your return boat transport to Gozo included, as well as a fun day of exploring the island on Quad Bike. Top sites include:

Quad Bike in Gozo

2. Rent a Car Or Quad Bike on Gozo

There are a few rental car companies on Gozo. However, generally, these offices charge much more than on the main island. Therefore, if you're looking to explore the best of Malta, I'd recommend checking availability and comparing prices using a tool like DiscoverCars.

Then, you can easily take the Gozo Channel Ferry, departing from Ċirkewwa every 45 minutes or so.

3. Via the Ta’ Ġurdan Walk

It's also possible to visit Wied Il Ghasri on the awesome 12-kilometer country walk, which starts and finishes in the village of Gharb. The trail, known as the Ta’ Ġurdan Walk, covers scenic hills and valleys, passing highlights like the St. Dimitri Chapel, Ta’ Ġurdan Lighthouse, the Ta Pinu Sanctuary, the Wied il-Mielah arch, and of course, the Wied il-Ghasri Bay.

The walk takes roughly 4-5 hours to complete and is definitely a great way to experience this beautiful region of Gozo.

Visiting Wied Il-Ghasri Beach on Gozo - What to Expect

As soon as we arrived at Wied Il Ghasri, we walked around the side of the bay to get a unique vantage point of this incredible Maltese beach.

View of Wied Il Ghasri Beach from the high cliffs, Gozo

Looking down, it seemed a bit inaccessible at first. However, there are a series of steps cut into the cliff face, which takes you directly down to the beach.

From the top of the steep cliffs, we had a great vantage point of the quiet bathing area below, as well as the head of the inlet reaching out to the open Mediterranean Sea.

The snaking gorge of Wied il-Ghasri features some of the clearest, turquoise water in Malta! We quickly sent up the drone and captured some of the images you see in this blog post. Next, we spent about an hour soaking up some rays and enjoying the relaxing ambiance of this sheltered cove.

Nearby Caves at Wied Il-Ghasri

This Gozo bay is famous for its Cathedral Cave dive site located at the start of the inlet. This is an underwater cave and features some pretty interesting swim-throughs. While we didn't dive at this site, we did walk over and take a look!

After the Beach: Go See the Saltpans

Looking for more attractions to explore after visiting Wied il-Ghasri.

Just a short walk or bike ride away you will find the famous Saltpans of Gozo (Xwejni). These are man-made salt pans, originally carved during the Roman Times as an effective method of collecting fresh sea salt. This method is still used today by dedicated families passing down the craft for centuries.

From the bay, simply head back to the unsealed road and continue along the coastal road known as Triq ix-Xwejni. Here, you'll find them all the way along the coast until you reach the seaside hamlet of Xwejni Bay.

Where to Stay on Gozo Island

Due to its small size and well-connected network of buses and roads, choosing the ideal location to stay in Gozo is less crucial than on the main island of Malta.

However, if you ask, locals will always tell you that to get the complete Gozitan experience, what's more important is picking a traditional boutique hotel over a luxury resort or modern hotel. You'll find many boutique hotels in Gozo dotted all over the island, from Nadur to Xlendi. Below are the 3 top picks.

  • Quaint Boutique Hotel - Nadur
Accommodation on Malta’s quieter sister island should reflect its more peaceful and traditional ambiance. This beautifully renovated boutique hotel is situated directly beside the Nadur Parish Church, with spacious balcony terraces looking over the town square.
  • Viewpoint Boutique Living - Xlendi
This family-run boutique hotel dates back 300 years and is situated on a beautiful cliff overlooking the Xlendi Valley and the Mediterranean Sea. The location is ideal for couples looking to get away, with convenient access to the beach and just a short 2 km drive to the Citadella.
  • Kempinski Hotel - San Lawrenz
For travelers preferring modern, 5-star luxury, the Kempinski Hotel is your best bet. This amazing hotel is located in San Lawrenz, on a 30,000m² tropical oasis. An excellent choice for larger groups and families as there are self-catering apartment options as well!

Discover Mgarr ix Xini Beach, a beautiful, narrowly snaking cove with a pristine pebble beach on the island of Gozo, Malta.

If you’re planning your adventures on Gozo, make sure to include a visit to Mgarr ix Xini Beach on Gozo’s southern coast.

This beach is definitely off the beaten path, and very few tourists ever make it here. If you’d like to explore a stunning, secluded bay that’s great for swimming, relaxing, or scuba diving, then don’t miss this one!

Secluded beach of Mgarr ix Xini on Gozo Island, Malta

About Mgarr Ix Xini Beach on Gozo Island

Mġarr ix-Xini Bay is a very narrow bay filled with deep water that is perfect for swimming. Situated in a steep-sided natural valley, this tiny pebble beach features an adjacent cleared area with steps leading to a picnic table.

Historically, this bay played an important role for the Knights of Malta, serving as a small harbor for galleys. To protect it and keep watch, there is a small watchtower built on the cliff named Mġarr ix-Xini Tower, which, dating back to the 1600s, has been restored several times.

While this spot is little-known among tourists, the bay did appear in the movie "By the Sea", starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

However, these days, it's mostly visited by Gozitan locals and a few scuba divers. Additionally, the steep cliffs of the gorge do offer some good trad routes for climbing as well.

Currently, there are no tours that include a guided visit to this bay. However, this is probably a good thing, as it keeps the place relaxed and certainly allows it to keep its hidden gem nature.

What this means for travelers is that if you want to visit this bay, you'll need to rent your own car or quad bike.

While there are car rental offices on Gozo, the most cost-effective way to rent a car in Malta is to do so on the main island. If you're still planning your trip, I recommend comparing prices well in advance using DiscoverCars to get the best deal.

Once you've got your set of wheels, you'll want to follow the directions on your navigation map. The best way is to take the Triq l-Mġarr westbound, then follow the small side streets down to the bay. The descent can be quite narrow and steep, so if you've got a loaded 2-door hatchback, make sure you're confident you can make it back up the hill!

What to Expect at Mgarr ix Xini Beach on Gozo

We arrived at this stunning bay quite early in the morning while looking for an off the beaten path beach to swim at. We noticed that the majority of the people at Mġarr ix-Xini were locals, besides one small team of scuba diving tourists.

The Beach

The beach itself is quite small, but very picturesque. There are some small shops near the waterfront, as well as a small kayak rental place. We decided to climb the cliffs on the western side of the gorge to get a better look.

I think this is one of the best beaches in Malta!

Then, we enjoyed a very relaxing swim in some of the most crystal clear water in Malta! Locals have installed a rope lined with buoys marking the safe area to swim near the beach.

Scuba Diving Sites at Mġarr ix-Xini

This location is a popular dive site at night, sloping down gently to roughly 17 meters upon reaching the Ta' Ċenċ inlet at the end of the gorge. There are two small caves here, which most dive shops only recommended to experienced divers.

Additionally, this fjord-like bay contains a weathered wreck called the MV Xlendi, which once served as a Gozo Ferry but was sunk purposely to create the artificial reef.

A quick travel guide to the picturesque Popeye Village viewpoint in Anchor Bay, Malta. Witness one of the best sunset viewpoints near Mellieha Bay overlooking the iconic Popeye Village Theme Park.

With its dramatic cliff-lined coast and panoramic inlets, Malta is a prime Mediterranean island for chasing sunset viewpoints. While most tourists visit the Popeye Village (Sweethaven Village) to explore the theme park built around the 1980 Robin Williams Movie, let me convince you to visit Anchor Bay for one of the best sunset locations in Malta!

Sunset at Anchor Bay, Malta

Where is Popeye Village & Anchor Bay?

Popeye Village is located in a small, picturesque inlet known as Anchor Bay, on the northwest coast of Malta island. This bay is located approximately 10-15 minutes drive from the village of Mellieħa (Għadira Bay). This is just north of the famous Golden Bay and Gnejna Bay beaches, two of the best beaches in Malta.

I've pinned the exact location of the Anchor Bay sunset viewpoint below to help you find it.

Safeguard yourself from unforeseen travel mishaps like accidents, cancellations, delays, and loss of your personal items. SafetyWing offers peace of mind travel insurance for Malta at super affordable rates.

How to get to the Popeye Village Viewpoint in Anchor Bay

The best way to explore all the hidden gems in Malta is to rent your own car. The best place to do so is to rent a car at Malta International Airport. Remember to compare prices for car rentals in advance using DiscoverCars or RentalCars.com as these sell out very quickly in the busy summer season.

Once you have your own set of wheels, make your way to the narrow one-way road called Triq tal-Prajjet, in the northwest of the island. This road leads directly to an adequately sized car park right next to the Popeye Village Viewpoint. If you want to explore the Popeye Village theme park (official film set), then you can walk around the bay into the town.

Malta Tour to Popeye Village

For travelers wanting to make the most of their time on the island, I recommend booking the widely popular Malta Catamaran Trip, which includes a visit and a swim at Popeye Village in Anchor Bay.

These boat trips visit Anchor Bay last, which is great to catch the afternoon sunset. During the day, you'll also stop at:

  • Blue Lagoon
  • Crystal Lagoon
  • Għajn Tuffieħa Bay

These trips depart from Bugibba, which is perfect if you are staying here or in the popular hotel districts of Saint Paul's Bay, Pembroke, or St Julians.

Anchor Bay & Popeye Village By Public Transport

Alternatively, travelers can reach Anchor Bay by bus routes 41 and 42 from Valletta, 222 from Sliema, 221 from Bugibba, or route 101 from Mellieħa Bay.

About Anchor Bay

While the Popeye Village is the most popular tourist attraction in this inlet, the bay itself is also a great place to visit. The edges of this narrow inlet are surrounded by rocky slopes forming a sheltered area to swim in the beautiful green-blue clear water or relax on the rocky beach.

There's also a water trampoline at the base of the inlet. However, this is only accessible to those who visit the Popeye's Village attraction.

Additionally, for scuba divers, there's a popular shore dive site here known as Scorpion Cave, a large cavern with a wide entrance. This is one of the best dive sites on the island. The Scot Craig is also another small wreck dive located approximately 500 meters from Anchor Bay's Entry.

Anchor Bay Malta

Fun Fact: Anchor Bay is named after a large anchor and enormous chain submerged in the depths of the bay. However, this is too deep for snorkelers and only visible by scuba diving, though it is an easy dive site (shore dive).

My Experience at the Popeye Village Viewpoint at Anchor Bay

We sat at the rocky hillside opposite the Popeye Village for an hour enjoying one of the most breathtaking sunsets in Malta that we'd experienced so far. During this warm summer evening, the sun set directly beside the steep slope on the rocky outcrop at the side of the bay.

This was the perfect place to wind down and since the viewpoint itself is not a very popular place, we enjoyed the good weather and relaxing vibes all to ourselves.

Below I've included some of the photos from my visit to the Anchor Bay sunset viewpoint, I hope you make it here yourself!

Popeye is a classic cartoon series popularized by comic strips in the 1930s. The Popeye Movie is a very famous film directed by Robert Altman and starring Robin Williams as Popeye, and Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl.

This movie set still exists as it was in the musical today at Anchor Bay Malta. And, visitors can explore the pirate-themed park for a small entrance fee at one of the most attractive bays in Malta

The main attractions in the village include:

  • Explore the open-air museum comprising the whole set of Sweethaven Village
  • Popeye's Cabin (a highlight of the Popeye Village film set)
  • Santa's toy town (a unique attraction for young children)
  • Food outlets
  • Silversmith demonstrations
  • Puppet show & small amusement park
  • Mini-golf course

Where to Stay in Malta

While visitors will find hotels and resorts scattered all over Malta's islands, the most popular neighborhoods to base yourself in Malta include Valletta, Sliema & St Julian's, Mellieħa Bay, and Gozo Island.

Travelers also have a broad variety of accommodation types, from 5-star resorts to traditional terraced boutique hotels. To save you time searching, below are the four best accommodation picks for Malta, based on location, reviews, and my personal experience.

  • St Julian's & Sliema Area: The Hilton
This is Malta's premiere resort, located at the heart of the picturesque Portomaso Marina. This is a great pick if you're trying to balance great location with utmost luxury.
  • Valletta: Iniala Harbour House
Perched atop Valletta's stunning St Barbara Bastion, this incredible boutique experience is well-regarded as one of the best accommodation options in Malta. The experience offers stunning views of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities from traditional Maltese balconies.
  • Mellieħa - db Seabank Resort
The db Seabank is well-regarded as the best resort in the calmer Mellieħa area. Situated just feet from the white sandy shores of Malta's longest beach, this complete all-inclusive hotel offers features five restaurants, a fitness center, a spa, multiple pools, and even a bowling alley!
  • Gozo - Quaint Boutique Hotel (Nadur)
Accommodation on Malta's quieter sister island should reflect its more peaceful and traditional ambiance.

A list of seven amazing black sand beaches in Santorini, Greece that you need to visit on your next trip to the Greek Islands.

The volcanic island of Santorini (Thera) is one of the most unique and undoubtedly beautiful locations in the Cyclades. However, unlike some of the other nearby Greek Islands including Ios or Paros, travelers won’t find many white sand beaches here.

Instead, what makes the famous beaches of Santorini Island so unique is their stunning dark sand and black pebbled shores.

So, in this guide, I’ll give you a detailed rundown on the best Santorini Greece black sand beaches to help you plan your volcanic beach hopping adventure on Thera!

In this beach guide, you’ll find a detailed list, as well as a map showing all the black sand and pebble beaches in Santorini, as well as some tips and recommendations for your vacation.

3 Unmissable Santorini Experiences

7 Beautiful Black Sand Beaches in Santorini

Many tour operators and even guidebooks recommend visiting the black sand beach on Santorini. However, this is very confusing as there are more than seven of these scattered around the island's volcanic coastline!

1. Perissa Beach

Perissa Beach, located on the eastern coastline of Santorini, is a small stretch of soft, black sand near the town of Perissa. This is widely acknowledged as the official black sand beach on Santorini, and the one visited on the majority of the island tours and day trips.

The reason is that Perissa Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Santorini. Wedged against the towering Mesa Vouno hill, this wide stretch of sand drops gently into the calm Aegean Sea. It's perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or simply relaxing on one of the many sun beds or straw umbrellas.

To get here, you'll want to make your way to Perissa, which is an approximately 45-minute drive from Oia, or 20 minutes from Thira on an ATV (quad bike). Alternatively, a visit to this iconic black beach is included in the highly-rated Santorini Highlights Tour.

2. Kamari Beach

Kamari Beach is another popular black sand and pebble beach on the eastern side of Santorini. This one is located on the opposite side of the Mesa Vouno mountain from Perissa and features a similar long stretch of soft sand and many sunbeds to tan on.

Additionally, this beach is popular with tourists looking to do water sports like jet skis, banana boat rides, or tubing.

3. Perivolos Beach

While technically joined, Perivolos Beach is the continuation of Perissa Beach, leading for approximately 2 kilometers to the south, where it joins again to Agios Georgios Beach.

Paralia Perivolos is quite popular, especially with those tourists staying at one of the more affordable accommodation options on the eastern side of Santorini. The beach is lined with many eateries, hotels, and popular beach bars, and is well-known for its festive atmosphere.

4. Vlychada Beach

Moving on to the southern tip of Santorini and we'll find another gorgeous black pebble beach edged by tall volcanic cliffs called Vlychada Beach. Paralia Vilchada is located at a relatively remote part of the island and isn't frequently visited by tourists. However, many day cruises do operate from the marina in Vlychada village (also written Vlichada), which is just beside this long beach.

If you're looking for a spot to swim, relax, and enjoy some tranquility on the often hectic island, then this is a great spot. There are often straw beach umbrellas and day beds for hire during the summer months.

5. Monolithos Beach

Monolithos Beach is a very large and mostly sandy beach located on the very eastern tip of Santorini, near the Kratikos Aerolimenas airport.

Compared to some of the more popular Santorini beaches, Monolithos doesn't have much infrastructure along the shore. However, there is a small beach bar called East View serving up cold beers and cocktails right on the beach! Additionally for a couple of euros visitors can rent a sunbed here too, with large palm-leaf shade covers.

Monolithos Beach is also the closest beach to the popular village of Fira, since it is directly on the other side of the island. As a result, this is one of the best beaches for travelers looking to escape the hustle and bustle and relax!

Planned Where to Stay Yet?

Santorini is world-famous for its epic cave hotels overlooking the caldera.

Make sure to check out my updated guide to the best cave hotels with swim-out pool views below– or my neighborhood guides to the best places to stay in Oia, and the top hotels in Fira.

6. Kampia Beach

Following along the Santorini caldera to the remote southwest region and we'll discover two more beautiful black sandy beaches in the Akroti Area.

The first is Kampia Beach, and while a little tricky to get to, is a great place to swim and relax without the crowds.

To get to Kampia Beach, you'll need to drive all the way around t the village of Akrotiri, following the directions on Google Maps to Kampia.

Once you arrive, you'll find a quiet, rocky black beach with only a tiny restaurant and cafe Called Kambia. To the east you'll witness the iconic red lava cliffs– a wild landscape unique to Santorini Red Beach.

Additionally, there are sometimes kayak rentals here, which is a great option if you would like to visit White Beach and Red Sand Beach, which are immediately on either side of Kampia Beach.

7. Mesa Pigadia Beach

The final black sand beach in Santorini worth visiting is the distant Paralia Mesa Pigadia. This is the most isolated beach on Santorini island and consists of a long stretch of black sand and small black pebbles. The crystal clear water is often quite calm on this side, tucked away from the strong wind you'll likely experience in Fira or Oia.

Additionally, from the shores, you'll witness beautiful panoramic views of the eroded volcanic rock coastline to the east which really are magnificent.

Unlike some of the most popular beaches like Perissa and Kamari, there are no hotels or resorts on this side of the island. As a result, it's one of the most quiet beaches on the entire island and sun loungers will likely get to enjoy its fine black sand all to themselves!

Mesa Pigadia Beach, Greece

Where to Stay in Santorini

To make the most of an unforgettable Santorini travel experience, you'll want to stay at one of the beautiful cliff villages of Oia or Fira (Thira). Below I have selected the top three accommodation options for each budget.

  • Divine Cave Experience - rated as the best cave hotel experience in Santorini. This adults-only cave hotel is located just north of the exclusive Imerovigli cliffside village and each room comes with its own cave pool with views over the ocean!
  • La Perla Villas and Suites - arguably the best mid-range option for a memorable and romantic Santorini getaway. These villas and suites are very well located in the beautiful village of Oia, where you can catch unforgettable sunset views over the volcano.
  • Bed Spot Hostel - The best hostel in Santorini. This one is located in the Fira center district and is very popular with backpackers and budget-conscious travelers after all the amenities such as a shared kitchen and a huge outdoor terrace common area.

Why Are the Beaches Black in Santorini?

The dark grey and black color of the sand and pebbles at many of Santorini's onyx-colored beaches is due to volcanic activity. In fact, the island of Santorini changed completely following a devastating volcanic eruption 3,600 years ago. This is referred to as the Minoan eruption and destroyed the Akrotiri settlement, as well as nearby islands' agriculture.

This resulted not only in a thick layer of volcanic ash, pumice, and lava covering the island, but reshaped the island completely from a round island to its current crescent shape.

A complete guide to Stiniva Beach on the Croatian Island of Vis. Includes options on how to get here, what to expect, and photos from my trip!

Stiniva Beach, (also known as Stiniva Cove or Stiniva Bay), is a beautiful pebble beach surrounded by high cliffs on the southern coastline of Vis Island.

This beautiful beach is a true hidden paradise, with its narrow cove almost completely obscured by boats from the outside. It’s not until you make the final approach that you realize why this was named Europe’s best beach!

About Stiniva Beach

Stiniva Beach is protected from the open sea by a thin, twisting cove leading onto a beautiful pebble beach. Here, you can expect to find crystal clear water and a wild landscape that looks like it belongs in a James Bond movie!

Stiniva Cove was once a large karst cave formed in the ice age during a time when the sea level was 120 meters lower than today. However, the cave collapsed thousands of years ago to form this beautiful cliff-lined cove.

Stiniva Beach, Croatia

In fact, you can still see signs of limestome speleothems on the eastern side of the cliff if you swim out past the narrow entrance and look to the right.

While this remote beach was a local secret for a long time, European Best Destinations named it Europe's best beach in 2016 due to its unique natural beauty.

As a result, this is now the most popular beach on Vis, with many travelers making the journey to this remove Adriatic Island just to swim in its tranquil waters.

Stiniva Beach on the Island of Vis

Where is Stiniva Cove

Stiniva is nearly as remote as it is beautiful.

Stiniva Beach is located on the Croatian Island of Vis, which is the farthest inhabited island on the Dalmatian Coast. Furthermore, the beach is remote even on the island itself– being located on the southern and farthest part of the island from the mainland.

Continue reading I'll give you a detailed account of the best ways to get here.

How to get to Stiniva Beach on Vis

Already find yourself on Vis Island? Perhaps you're hanging out in Split or Dubrovnik and looking for the best day trips.

I've visited Stiniva Beach twice during my travels in Croatia. Once was on a 5-island boat trip to the Blue Cave from Split, and the other independently by renting a scooter on Vis Island.

Either way, visiting Stiniva Beach is an unforgettable experience! Below I'll reveal to you how to get here by breaking down the two main options.

Vis Boat Tour

Due to the remote location, one of the best ways to get to Stinva Beach is to join in on a boat tour.

Below are two main options.

5 Island Trip from Split - the highest-ranked day tour from Split and includes The island of Hvar, Stiniva Beach, Biševo (Blue Cave Tour), Budikovac Island (Blue Lagoon), Green Cave, and more.

Vis Island Boat Trip - if you're already on Vis, you can find speed boats and taxi boats in the town of Vis. Unfortunately, you can't book this online in advance.

Croatia coastline boat
Stiniva Cove from the Boat

Independent Hiking to Stiniva Cove

For those already exploring the island of Vis and looking for a way to get to Stiniva Cove, you also have the option of hiking from the road.

I visited Vis on a 7-day trip with Sail Croatia (highly recommend) and decided to rent a moped from the town of Vis (26 -40 Euro per day). From here, it was only a 15-minute ride to the trailhead.

Alternatively, you can also get a taxi or Uber, which costs between 9 and 10 euros.

The trailhead is located on the top of the hill just beside Villa Luana, where you'll find a large, unpaved parking lot and a signpost.

  • GPS Coordinates: 43°01'27.2"N 16°10'08.1"E

Travel Tip: Visitors in Croatia can rent a car quite cheaply from a range of dealers on the mainland to visit Vis via the car ferry "Jadrolinia". I recommend comparing prices on DiscoverCars for the best deal.

Stiniva Beach from the sky

The Hiking Trail to Stiniva Beach

From the trailhead, you'll find a narrow path leading down the steep cliffs to the beautiful Stiniva Beach. This track is a combination of steps and some ungraded sections with loose rocks and pebbles leading down to the shore.

Expect to reach the beach within roughly 15 minutes from the trailhead. Furthermore, as you descend, you'll get increasingly better views of this stunning beach unveiling itself between the trees and bushes.

Eventually, you'll reach the pebbled shore beside a small bar right on the beach.

What to Expect at Stiniva

As soon as you arrive at Stiniva Beach, you'll understand why this remarkable cove is home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

The narrow sea entrance and unique rock formations form a beautiful sheltered cove. On all sides, high cliffs form a rounded amphitheater that provides natural shade and calm, crystalline waters throughout the bay.

Calm Waters at Stiniva Beach

Along the white, pebbled shore, you'll find many places to sit down and enjoy the warm Dalmatian sun. The crystal clear sea in Stiniva Bay is also perfect for swimming and snorkeling, with great visibility year-round.

Furthermore, if you climb either side of the rock formations at the entrance to the cove, you'll get great cliff-jumping opportunities. These are both at the inlet of the sea, with the highest jump at roughly 12 meters! So, make sure you're prepared!

Where to Stay on Vis Island, Croatia

There are plenty of places to stay in Vis. However, most travelers tend to stay in the towns of Vis or Komiža.

Below are the top three accommodation options on Vis Island for various budgets.

  • House Bava - Located on a quiet cobblestone street, this apartment is a perfect pick for those wanting to explore the old town of Vis. A short 5-minute walk from the beach and close to many cafes and restaurants.
  • Hotel San Giorgio - The perfect choice for those wanting a relaxing stay in a family-run hotel in Vis town. The hotel offers a buffet breakfast and beautifully styled rooms.
  • Apartments Villa Glorija - Located in Komiža on the opposite side of Vis, this small village has everything you need! This top-rated apartment has a fully equipped kitchen, air-conditioning, and lounge and is only a 4-minute walk from the beach.

FAQs about Stiniva Beach

Is it worth visiting this European Beach?

Of course! I'm not exaggerating when I say that Stiniva Beach is one of the most beautiful coves I've ever visited.

How long to spend at the beach?

It's possible to spend a whole day at Stiniva Cove simply relaxing, swimming, snorkeling, or cliff jumping in this unique bay.

When is the best time to visit Stiniva Beach?

Being a popular beach, I recommend visiting in the early morning or late afternoon to beat the crowds.

What should I bring?

I suggest bringing sunscreen, sealed shoes for the hike, and water shoes for the beach. While you can buy snacks and refreshments at the small bar, it's also a good idea to bring some water as well.

A complete travel guide featuring 10 things to know about visiting Cabo San Juan, Tayrona National Park, Colombia (Playa Cabo San Juan del Guía).

Tayrona National Park is a pristine chunk of protected tropical rainforest on Colombia’s northern Caribbean Coast. For many, this park is a must-stop on the Colombian travel route, offering plenty of amazing things to do from wildlife spotting to relaxing on tropical beaches.

If you ask anyone (especially the backpacker crowd) where to stay in Tayrona National Park, the first answer is usually to spend a night camping on Cabo San Juan beach! This is the most popular beach in Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona, and arguably the most beautiful!

So, to help you better plan your trip, I’ve written this detailed travel guide to visiting Cabo San Juan del Guía in Tayrona National Park. I’ll include all the information you need to know, including how to get here, where to stay, what to expect, and of course, 10 useful tips for visiting!

Where is Cabo San Juan Beach

Cabo San Juan beach is located within Tayrona Park on the Caribbean Coast in Northern Colombia. You'll find it located beside other famous beaches including Playa La Piscina, and Playa Nudista (nudist beach).

Below is the exact location of Playa del Cabo to help you find it.

Cabo San Juan Map in Tayrona National Park

How to Get to Cabo San Juan Beach

To get to Cabo San Juan, there are two options, you can book an organized day trip from the city of Santa Marta, or get here independently. Below I'll break down each option in more detail.

Option 1: Day Trip To Cabo San Juan Tayrona

If you're short on time, in a group of travelers, or perhaps simply just want the most convenient way to experience the best of Tayrona National Park on a day trip, then a private tour might be the best option for you.

There is one day trip that you can book online that includes return transport from Santa Marta, Taganga, Rodadero, Pozos Colorados, or Bello Horizonte. This day trip option includes a hiking guide through the park and all the way to Cabo San Juan Beach.

This is great value as all park admission fees (notoriously expensive) are included in the cost as well. Furthermore, you won't have to line up in the long lines at the park entrance.

Option 2: Independent Travel to Cabo San Juan (public Transport)

In order to get to this beautiful beach independently, you'll first have to make your way to the main entrance to Tayrona Natural National Park.

While there are two entry points, the main one is called El Zaino Entrance (Tayrona La Entrada Principal), which is the most convenient park entrance leading to Cabo San Juan Beach.

Zaino Entrance to Tayrona National Park
El Zaino Entrance

Cheap Public Bus to the El Zaino Entrance

The best way (also cheapest) to get to the El Zaino Entrance is to take the local green bus running from the Santa Marta Public Market (Mercado Público de Santa Marta).

This bus runs every 30 minutes or so, starting from 8:00 AM, and costs just 8,000 Colombian Pesos. Expect a journey of just over an hour from Santa Marta before stopping at a parking lot just outside the park.

When you're at Mercado Santa Marta, just ask any local for "Tayrona" and they'll point to the bus you need.

If you're coming from Minca, the colectivo takes you directly to the public market, where you hop off directly next to the Tayrona bus.

Tip: Colombia is an adventure traveler's playground! If you're planning to rent motorbikes or go hiking, then make sure you have travel insurance for adventurers. The best option currently is WorldNomads, which cater to young adventure travelers. For longer backpacking trips, check out the nomad insurance by SafetyWing.

Coach Bus From Santa Marta Bus Station

For travelers looking to get to Cabo San Juan Beach and Tayrona National Park from other parts of Colombia, you also have the option to take a more expensive, but much more comfortable coach bus to the entrance.

This is a convenient option if you end up at the Santa Marta Bus Station (Terminal de Transportes de Santa Marta), which is approximately 20 minutes outside the actual city. However, if you're already in Santa Marta, or if you're coming from Minca or Palomino, this wouldn't make much sense.

For the rest of you, the best and safest bus company is called Brasilia, and you can book all your tickets in advance using the convenient Busbud website.

Tip: You can also arrange a private taxi from Santa Marta to Tayrona National Park, but expect to pay around 80,000 - 100,000 Colombian pesos for this.

El Zaino to Cabo San Juan Tayrona National Park

Once you arrive at the El Zaino entrance, you'll undoubtedly be greeted by several salespeople offering you accommodation in the park. If you're looking to camp on Cabo San Juan Tayrona, then it's actually easiest to just pay the camping fee here (since it's the same price anyway).

Afterward, travelers will also need to pay the Taryona entrance fee, which is currently 57,500 COP per person (seems to increase every year). Additionally, it is now a requirement to pay for Tayrona medical insurance at the entrance as well, which is 5,000 pesos per day. You can pay both of these fees with your credit card

Tip: There are no ATMs within the national park. So, make sure you bring enough cash with you to last the duration of the trip.

Once you're finally inside Tayrona Park, you can start the journey to Cabo San Juan. While you can walk from the entrance, the easiest way is to take the colectivo vans at the entrance to the start of the trail. This is 5,000 pesos per person and takes you all the way to the coast to the start of the trail.

In order to get to Cabo San Juan, you need to hike in. This is a very scenic trail but takes around 2 hours (9 kilometers or 5.5 miles), following a mostly-flat jungle track.

Along the way, you'll be granted loads of wildlife spotting opportunities and pass some more beautiful beaches, including Arrecifes, Playa Arenilla, and La Piscina beach.

This hike is very easy to follow and can even be slightly crowded. Since Cabo Beach is the most popular in the park, most people will be heading here.

10 Things to Know About Cabo San Juan Del Guia in Tayrona National Park

With all of the logistics out of the way, let's dive into what I promised. 10 important things to know about visiting Cabo San Juan Del Guía in Tayrona National Park

1. You Have to Hike In

As you already know by now, in order to get to this beautiful place, you have to be prepared to hike in.

This is quite a long walk, especially if you're not an experienced hiker in the tropics. Remember to bring your own water!

The trail winds its way up the coast, passing sections of exposed beaches, palm tree forests, and dense tropical forests. There's lots of wildlife on the way too, so keep an eye out for monkeys!

Tip: Since you have to hike in, I highly recommend not bringing a large backpack with all your travel gear. Instead, leave this at your hostel in Santa Marta or Palomino. Masaya Hostel in Santa Marta and Dreamer in Palomino allow this.

2. You'll Need to Bring Your Own Water

In order to keep this beautiful destination clean, plastic is not permitted inside Tayrona National Park. This means finding plastic water bottles is difficult but also keeps them out of the Caribbean Sea!

As a result, if you're heading into Cabo San Juan Beach, you'll want to bring your own water. Just remember to pack them out!

Many travelers purchase large gallon bottles at the entrance to the park. However, I simply relied on my Grayl Purifying bottle to filter the water available at the campsite.

3. You Can Camp on the Beach

Camping on Cabo San Juan is perhaps one of the biggest draws for many travelers.

If you're thinking about camping, then it's good to know that you have the option to sleep in a tent or hammock.

The prices are as follows:

  • Hammock in the main camping area: 40,000 COP per hammock
  • Watchtower hammock: 50,000 COP per hammock
  • Tent site (bring your own tent): 20,000 COP per person
  • Tent in camping area: 40,000 COP per person

If you're choosing a hammock, I highly recommend bringing insect repellent and your own mosquito nets.

There are basic toilet facilities (1,000 pesos to use them), as well as a cold, outdoor shower.

If you're going to camp, I recommend spending one-night camping and spending a full day at Cabo San Juan beach the next day. This will give you enough time to enjoy the area.

4. It's a Great Beach for Swimming

Perhaps the main reason why Cabo San Juan beach is so popular is that it's the safest in the area for swimming. This beach is in a semi-sheltered cove, resulting in less exposure to currents and large swell. There are also lifeguards on duty and a safety net strung through the crystal clear waters.

However, remember to always monitor conditions and don't swim anywhere unless you are confident in the water.

Cabo San Juan Tayrona Beach

Yes, you might already know this, but Cabo San Juan is one of the most popular beaches in the region and by far the most popular in Tayrona National Park!

This is especially true in the peak season, where you'll want to avoid public holidays and even weekends if possible.

For those wanting to escape the crowds, consider camping on Playa Brava instead. This is a less-popular alternative and easily accessible from the Calabazo entrance.

Tip: The high season in Colombia runs between June to July and December to February.

6. There's a Restaurant At the Beach

If you're worried about food when staying at Cabo San Juan beach, don't be! There's a large restaurant just a short walk from the shore offering big meals at reasonable prices.

There's also another small restaurant just a little further down, which mostly sells small snacks.

7. Insurance is Compulsory

This is one for those of you who skipped the logistics section above. Tayrona medical insurance is compulsory, even if you have your own travel insurance.

Luckily, this isn't too expensive, at just 5,000 Colombian pesos per day. You'll pay this fee at the entrance to the park. I've been told that this fee used to be 2,500, so let's hope it doesn't keep doubling every few years!

8. There are Lifeguards at the Beach

If you're worried about safety, it's good to know that there are lifeguards at the Cabo San Juan beach.

While I visited in the busy season, I was also told that they monitor this beach year-round and are there in the low season as well.

9. Cabo San Juan is Very Safe

Cabo San Juan del Guía is a very safe beach. Unlike in other parts of Colombia, crime is very uncommon here.

So, for nature lovers and photographers, walking around with a camera is completely fine.

10. The Hike to El Pueblito is Closed

Unfortunately, this information wasn't available to me online when I visited. However, as of 2018, the hike from Cabo San Juan beach to the indigenous village of El Pueblito is now closed. This is a sacred place and is now closed off from tourism.

This happened just prior to the pandemic in 2018 and was due to a request of the indigenous people living in the communities (not a result of Covid). While you can technically still hike from Cabo San Juan along the track towards Playa Brava, it's best to take the Calabazo entrance instead.

Alternative Accommodation in Tayrona National Park

Most backpackers will tell you that you only need one or two nights of camping at Cabo San Juan Beach. However, I actually recommend spending at least a night in the jungle interior as well.

This will give you the best of both worlds, waking up to a beautiful sunrise over turquoise waters AND spending the night in the forest amongst rare and protected wildlife!

You don't need to book your camping in advance but I highly recommend booking accommodation in Tayrona National Park online as there aren't many options available. Here are my recommendations.

  • Ecohabs Bamboo - beautiful Ecohabs (bamboo cabins) nestled in the deep jungles and surrounded by wildlife.
  • Mirador del Parque - a budget option for staying inside Tayrona National park. Sleep in dorms or private jungle huts high on a hill overlooking the jungle canopy.
  • Ecolodge Playa Brava - amazing beach huts located right on Playa Brava beach.

Tip: While you can also stay outside the entrance, it's worth booking accommodation inside the park since otherwise, you'll need to pay for multiple entrance tickets (which are expensive).
