A complete guide to visiting Dinner Falls Cairns and Mount Hypipamee Crater in Tropical North Queensland’s Tablelands Region. Explore the prehistoric rainforest landscape and take a swim in one of the best natural swimming spots in the Tablelands.

Whether you’re planning a day trip from Cairns, or you’re exploring the Tablelands, a trip to Mount Hypipamee Crater and Dinner Falls is a great bet.

The trip makes a good half-day trip which includes a scenic swimming spot and a sight of the famous crater lake at the end of a short rainforest loop. In this quick guide, I’ll detail everything you need to know about visiting Dinner Falls Cairns and the Mount Hypipamee Crater, as well as what you might expect.

Best Cairns Outdoor Experiences

Travel tip: By far, the best islands for snorkeling in Cairns are the Frankland Islands (pristine reef). There is only one boat trip allowed to stop on these islands and you can book this directly with BackpackerDeals + use code OLLY5 to get $5 off.

Mount Hypipamee National Park

Both Dinner Falls and the Hypipamee Crater can be accessed on a short loop walk in the Hypipamee National Park.

This park sits at 900 m+ on the southern Evelyn Tableland in the Hugh Nelson Range. Due to its altitude, the Hypipamee National Park is a hotspot for high-altitude birds and possums.

There are also signs for Cassowaries, so keep an eye out.

MOUNT HYPIPAMEE CRATER CAIRNS

How to Get to Dinner Falls and the Hypipamee Crater

Mount Hypipamee is located approximately 1.5 hours drive from Cairns and about 20 minutes from Atherton. The waterfall and crater car park is easy to follow using Google Maps to the pin below.

From Cairns, you'll have the option of taking the shorter, but much more winding Gillies Range Road past the Crater Lakes towards Malanda and onwards to Mount Hypipamee National Park.

Alternatively, a longer (yet similar duration) drive can be taken by driving North on Bruce Highway and onto Kennedy Highway towards Mareeba, passing Kuranda on the way. From Mareeba, it's an extra 45-minute drive to the crater and waterfall car park following the Kennedy Highway south.

Dinner Falls and Crater Loop Walk

 • Hike Distance: 1.2 km loop
 • Duration: 30-40 minutes
 • Elevation: Mostly flat with some short sections of slight gradient
 • Difficulty: Easy

Once you arrive at the Mount Hypipamee car park, you'll see a large sign next to the scrub which details the short loop to the crater and Dinner Falls.

There are two walking tracks in this national park; the short 800 m return walk to the Mount Hypipamee Crater, or the 1.2KM Dinner Falls loop track.

I'd recommend taking the loop track, since this way you'll get to see Dinner Falls, as well as the Mount Hypipamee Crater on a relatively easy track. The walking track is well-marked, wide, and easy to navigate, albeit a little bit steep in some sections. Overall, this loop walk is very easy and can be attempted by anyone.

The first stop on the walking track is a viewing platform just above the Hypipamee Crater, approximately 400 m from the car park.

From here, you'll get clear views of the sheer granite walls which plunge into the 70M-deep crater lake.

The Hypipamee Crater is really a diatreme (volcanic pipe caused by a gaseous explosion), which was discovered in 1879 when a gold-prospecting party accidentally fell into it.

It is now protected within the National Park and is a unique ecosystem that is home to a particular fresh-water shrimp species that may be found nowhere else on earth.

Dinner Falls Cairns - Waterfall Levels and Swimming Spots

From the Hypipamee Crater viewing platform, turn around and take the immediate left trail heading down the valley. This track forms the Dinner Falls loop, where you'll spot the several tiers of the waterfall along the way.

The first tier on the track is blocked by a steel barricade with warning signs not to enter. This spot doesn't offer any opportunity for a swim, so it's best to just take a look and move on.

DINNER FALLS WATERFALL CAIRNS

The second tier of Dinner Falls is the most impressive, and also the best swimming spot. The wide, 12M high waterfall cascades down in multiple streams into a 1.5M deep pool. This pool has been propped up by concrete walls on the edges, which helps maintain the depth.

DINNER FALLS CAIRNS, SWIMMING HOLE AND WATERFALL

Continuing up the Dinner Falls loop track, you'll soon reach the second swimming spot. This one is a little shallower and the waterfall slightly smaller. However, it's still a great spot to hang out, especially if the larger level is too busy.

The Millaa Millaa Waterfall Circuit is a trio of epic rainforest waterfalls located in the Atherton Tablelands Region just behind Cairns, Queensland. Here’s a quick guide to checking out the circuit for independent adventurers.

I’ve said it a few times but the Tablelands are easily one of the most underrated adventure destinations in Queensland and probably in Australia! From epic waterfalls and ancient rainforest hikes to unique native animals, this region really is a hidden gem.

In this guide, I’ll detail what to expect when planning a trip to the Millaa Millaa Waterfall Circuit on Theresa Creek Road near Millaa Millaa. I’ll include tips on how to get to Millaa Millaa from Cairns, what to expect and some photos that I hope will inspire you to check out the full trio.

I've also written independent blog posts for each waterfall on the circuit; Millaa Millaa Falls, Zillie Falls and Ellinjaa Falls. So, if you want some more detailed information or more photos of each, you'll find the links to them below each section underneath.

Tip: Visit Millaa Millaa Falls on an Epic Day Trip From Cairns

Travelers looking to visit the absolute best waterfalls in the region surrounding Cairns, including Millaa Millaa, will want to check out this epic Atherton Tablelands waterfall tour.

This is great value for money and includes a stop at Josephine Falls and the Crater Lakes as well!

SWIMMING AT MILLAA MILLAA

Where is the Millaa Millaa Waterfall Circuit?

The Millaa Millaa Waterfall Circuit is located in the Atherton Tablelands region of Queensland near the small township of Millaa Millaa. The waterfall circuit road is called "Theresa Creek Road", a 15-kilometre stretch of road offering scenic views over the rolling hills and pockets of dense rainforest.

The circuit is located approximately 105 km from Cairns, so you can expect at least a 1-hour 40-minute drive. However, don't let that discourage you. There is so much to see and do in this region and I'm sure you definitely will not regret the trip.

Theresa Creek Road on the Waterfall Circuit is sealed and can be accessed by any vehicle type. However, the road can get narrow in some sections as it wraps around the neighbouring farmlands.

How to Get to Millaa Millaa from Cairns

From Cairns, you’ll need to head south on the Bruce Highway towards Gordonvale. Once you approach the obvious Walsh’s Pyramid, look out for signs towards Atherton Tablelands over Gillies Range Road.

Follow this winding road all the way up to the Tablelands, pass the crater lakes and continue following signs south to Millaa Millaa“, which is just passed Malanda.

Theresa Creek Road (the Waterfall Circuit Road) is just a minute or so from the small township, where you'll find some small shops, a caravan park and a fuel station.

The Waterfalls on the Millaa Millaa Circuit

Once you make it to the Millaa Millaa Waterfall Circuit, it's time to start exploring! Here are the three waterfalls on the road. Each is located on different points along the road, with a car park and signs indicating where to stop (check the map above).

In terms of access, every waterfall on this Millaa Millaa circuit is very easy to get to and requires only a very short walk.

Again, I've written more detailed posts for each waterfall. You'll find the links underneath each section below.

1. Millaa Millaa Falls

 • Height: 18.3 metres
 • Known for: Most photographed waterfall in Australia, great swimming spot.

Millaa Millaa Falls is undeniably the star of the show. As I mentioned above, most tours heading to Atherton Tablelands stop by Millaa Millaa so it can understandably be a little busy.

Tip: visit early

This 18.3 metre single-drop, plunging waterfall is indeed one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Australia. As a result, it's earned itself the title of "Australia's Most Photographed Waterfall".

The waterfall is located right next to a large car park that is well-signed so it's really impossible to miss it. Unfortunately in my opinion, a fair bit of rainforest has been cleared and some construction has been developed around the edge of the waterfall.

This creates a less "natural" vibe, but understandably makes it a more attractive spot for weddings and events.

At the base of the waterfall is a deep and very wide swimming pool that is perfect for a dip.

2. Zillie Falls

 • Height: ~15 metres
 • Known for: Viewing platform above the falls, slippery track

Next on the Millaa Millaa Waterfall Circuit is Zillie Falls, a roughly 15 metre tall waterfall that gushes over the edge of the eroded basalt column and crashes hard onto a pile of large boulders below.

While there is a signpost and a large car park, it's actually not that hard to miss this if you're not paying attention.

Once you arrive, you'll walk out to a viewing platform that is positioned above and adjacent to the waterfall. There is a slippery "unofficial" worn track that also leads to the base but it's easy to miss. You'll find it by looking for a small clearing in the forest beside the viewpoint.

Unfortunately, many people skip Zillie Falls. Don't be one of those! Zillie Waterfall in my opinion is a more enjoyable experience since there's a lack of crowds, so make sure to stop by.

Honestly, it would be "Zillie" not to.

ZILLIE FALLS WATERFALL QUEENSLAND
Zillie Falls

3. Ellinjaa Falls

 • Height: 12 metres
 • Known for: Fewer crowds, large swimming hole, ledge behind the waterfall

By now you're probably wondering how yet another waterfall could possibly impress you. I bet that you'll be pleasantly surprised once you arrive at the last waterfall; Ellinjaa Falls.

This waterfall requires the longest walk to reach out of the three. In saying that, it's probably going to take you less than 5 minutes on a sealed track through the rainforest.

Once you get to the base, you'll know why Tropical North Queensland tourism uses this waterfall so much to promote the region. Although smaller, this wide, cascading waterfall in a small rainforest clearing creates an otherworldly scene.

Ellinjaa Falls is my personal favourite waterfall on the Millaa Millaa Waterfall Circuit for its wide pool, awesome ledge and the chance of spotting a wild platypus!

]]>
Mena Creek Falls lies beside the tourist attraction of Paronella Park within a small country town on the Cassowary Coast, just 19 km from Innisfail.

When I first heard about Mena Creek Falls, I was under the impression that it was within the private property of Paronella Park. However, the truth is that both the base of the waterfall and the viewpoint from above are accessible to the public for free at all times.

Therefore, visiting Mena Creek Falls on a Cassowary Coast road trip from Cairns is a worthwhile addition to the itinerary, even if you’re not up for visiting Paronella Park.

The waterfall at Mena Creek Falls is a single-tier waterfall plunging off of the 7-million-year-old basalt column and into a vast, rainforest-enshrouded freshwater pool. However, it’s not known as a good swimming spot due to the 3-metre crocodile that calls it home!

About Mena Creek Falls & Paronella Park

 • Waterfall height: 6 metres

Mena Creek Falls gets its fame from the adjacent castle, built by José Paronella in the 1930s. According to the story, José's dream was to build a castle after emigrating to Australia in the early 1900s from Spain to work the cane farms.

Apparently, José purchased 13 acres of scrub next to Mena Creek for only £120 in 1929 and spent the next decade building his castle and planting over 7500 tropical plants and trees to create the now thriving rainforest.

He also built a hydroelectric plant from the waterfall flow, which was able to power the entire park. It was the first of its kind in North Queensland.

He opened his dream castle (Paronella Park) to the public in 1935 and it's still one of the most-awarded tourist stops in Queensland.

There is a suspension bridge that connects the grassy park on the side of the waterfall to Paronella Park. While you have to pay an admission fee to enter the park, anyone can check out Mena Creek Falls from the grass or the walking track to the base of the falls.

Tip: Visit Paronella Park from Cairns

Paronella Park & Mena Creek Falls is included on this top-rated nature tour from Cairns, which also stops at Millaa Millaa Falls & Lake Barine.

Where is Mena Creek Falls?

The township of Mena Creek sits tucked behind the Basilisk Range, on the western side of the Bruce Highway, approximately 19 kilometres from Innisfail, 46 kilometres from Mission Beach and 110 kilometres from Cairns.

This small country town is well known for its waterfall namesake, which is found just off the main road (Innisfail-Japoon Road). This winding country road is sealed and weaves its way through the rich cane-field countryside, joining two access points on the Bruce Hwy (at Innisfail and Silkwood).

How to Get to Paronella Park - Self-Drive from Cairns or Innisfail

Getting to Mena Creek Falls requires access to a vehicle since there are no tours or public transport options.

Therefore, this waterfall pit-stop is a perfect scenic route detour on an East Coast trip, whether heading south from Innisfail or north from Mission Beach to Cairns or the Atherton Tablelands.

Since there are two access points, directions will depend on whether you're coming from the north or the south.

From Innisfail head south on Bruce Hwy and take a right onto Boogan Road. Follow this road until it reaches a T-intersection in the tiny township of South Johnston. Take a left here and follow this road until you reach Mena Creek Falls on your right.

Heading north on the Bruce Highway, head for Silkwood. Turn left at the petrol station (Silkwood Japoon Road) and follow this until the intersection beside Silkwood State School. Turn right here, cross the bridge then, turn left. Follow this road until you reach Mena Creek Falls (there are signs to Paronella Park).

Visiting Paronella Park

Preferring natural hikes and adventures, the castle and rainforest park didn't seem like something I was too interested in. In saying that, I understand that a lot of people visiting Mena Cree Falls will also want to explore the old castle and garden.

You can enter the park at the ticket office just around the bend from Mena Creek Falls. Here, you'll get some information about the park before being on your way to exploring the labyrinth of castles, bridges, tunnels, secret staircases, and fountains built by Jose Paronella.

To save time & skip the line, you can pre-book a refundable ticket online at the same price using Get Your Guide.

What to Expect at Mena Creek Falls

If you'd just prefer to check out a roadside waterfall on a pit stop, then Mena Creek Falls is perfect. We only spent the better part of an hour exploring the waterfall, since warning signs for crocodiles didn't make us too enthusiastic about swimming here.

Regardless, we enjoyed our time snapping some shots from the top of the waterfall and from the suspension bridge. We also took the short rainforest track found next to the bathrooms opposite the grassy park area beside the fall. This leads to a viewing platform underneath Mena Creek Falls.

The post Wallaman Falls, Queensland – Guide to Visiting the Tallest Waterfall in Australia 2023 appeared first on We Seek Travel.

]]>
Wallaman Falls Queensland, located in the World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics Area of FNQ, is Australia’s tallest, permanent, single-drop waterfall. Read this complete guide to visiting Wallaman Waterfall and get information on the Wallaman Falls hike to the base via the Djyinda Track.

Wallaman Falls, the tallest waterfall in Australia, is located deep in the incredibly diverse Girringun National Park. The waterfall itself plunges down a sheer cliff into a deep pool at the base of the rainforest canyon.

Wallaman Falls has been on my radar for a while now. After having explored most of the waterfalls around Cairns, Haylea and I were really keen to check out Australia's tallest waterfall! In fact, we were so excited that we departed on the 4-hour car trip from Cairns just to check it out.

In this blog post, I'll detail pretty much everything you'll need to visit Wallaman Falls. I'll also hope to answer all of the questions you might have about the waterfall and include some shots that I hope will inspire your visit.

About Wallaman Falls and the Girringun National Park

Wallaman Falls is part of the traditional lands of the Warrgamaygan Aboriginal people. 'Nginba Warrgamaygan Ngarji'.

The waterfall is in a designated section with the same name inside the Girringun National Park. This national park is part of the Wet Tropics Area, which has heritage listings under the national and world bodies.

 • Wallaman Falls Height: 268 metres
 • Pool Depth: 20 metres

There are two viewing options for Wallaman Falls. The first is a dedicated viewing area where three platforms have been built. Here, you'll get great views of the waterfall from above, as well as the steep rainforest canopy and surrounding cliffs.

The second viewing option is from below the waterfall itself. You'll reach this by taking the Djyinda Track (more on this below).

WALLAMAN FALLS LOOKOUT

Visiting Girringun National Park

The Wallaman section of the park has deep gorges below vast plateaus. These flat, forest-covered plains fall steeply down sheer cliffs creating some pretty dramatic scenes.

I'm not sure what it was about this national park for me. But, I really felt like it was a great representation of "Australia". I think this is due to the diversity of plants here. The flora ranges from dense, tropical rainforest to sparse eucalypt forests as you make your way down the canyon.

Also, many uniquely Australian animals call the Wallaman section of the Girringun home. These include platypi, water dragons, rat kangaroos, cassowaries and turtles.

How to Get to Wallaman Falls

To get to Wallaman Falls, you are going to need a vehicle. The roads here are well-maintained and newly sealed for the entire stretch, so a regular sedan or hatchback will suffice. However, due to the relative remoteness of the falls, it requires a bit of a stretch to get here.

Tip: If you want some great photos of the waterfall, aim to get here by 3:30 pm. The setting sun falls quickly behind the canyon, blocking the light from hitting half of the waterfall.

Cairns is one of the most popular travel destinations in Australia and car rentals quickly book out! I recommend booking well in advance. I always use RentalCars.com as they compare the widest range of rentals across dealerships in the Far North.

Detailed Directions To Wallamans Falls

The best advice is to head towards the small rural town of "Ingham" which is located approximately 235 KM south of Cairns and about 112 km north of Townsville. Ingham is a highway town on the Bruce Highway, so getting here is easy.

From Ingham, there are signs in town pointing the way to "Wallaman Falls - Australia's Tallest Waterfall". These lead you to Trebonne Road, just off the T-intersection at the centre of town.

Follow the signs to Wallaman Falls, continuing straight to Trebonne, then take the first right after crossing the creek. Continue on this road until you reach Venables Crossing (there's a waterfall sign here), then take a left on Lannercrost Exit Road and then a right on Wallaman Falls Road.

Wallaman Falls Road is 37 km long and gently climbs the rainforest hills of Lannercost State Forest and eventually into Girringun National Park. Again, the road is sealed. However, the first section of the road before the climb passes cattle land with loads of cows commonly blocking the road, so take it easy.

There are a few lookouts that you can park at on the way up to Wallaman Falls, if you've got the time, I recommend the stop.

 • Google Maps Pin: "Wallaman Falls"

Eventually, you'll arrive at a bend with a sign to "Lookout Road", leading to the well-established Wallaman Falls car park (pinned below). There is plenty of parking here and even a toilet. Instead, if you continue straight past Lookout Road for a few hundred metres, you'll arrive at Wallaman Falls campsite.

Wallaman Falls

Wallaman Falls Lookout

After arriving at Wallaman Falls car park, you really can't miss the lookout. This is a small, grassy cleared area with three boardwalk-style viewing platforms stretching out over the canyon.

For a comprehensive view of Wallamans Falls and the National Park, this is as good as it gets. However, in my opinion, taking the short but rewarding hike down to the base of the falls is definitely worth it. Besides, you've come all this way to see it!

The Wallaman Falls Hike - The Djyinda Track

 • Hike Distance: 1.6 im (3.2 km return)
 • Duration: 1-2 hours
 • Elevation: 270 m elevation gain (on the walk back up)
 • Difficulty: Moderate (steep)

The Djyinda Track (pronounced 'Yin-Da') is the name given to the graded walking track down to the base of Wallaman Falls from the Wallaman Falls lookout. It's a relatively short track, yet steep in some sections. I'd say anyone with relatively good fitness will have absolutely no trouble with it. Though, since it's a fairly short walk, even those that usually struggle with steep climbs should just take their time and bring water.

The track begins as a sealed path before giving way to rocky and rooty, rainforest undergrowth. The Djyinda track snakes its way down the steep canyon through dense forest. You'll notice that the further you make your way down, the wetter it gets, with thick moss growing on rocks and tree trunks.

DJYINDA TRACK TO WALLAMANS FALLS

You won't have a view of Wallaman Falls until right at the end of the Djyinda Track. There is a fenced-off viewing platform at the end of the track. Here, you'll get great views of the Aussie colossal pounding into the deep pool, casting a shroud of rainbow vapour into the air.

Swimming at Wallaman Falls

It is possible to swim at Wallaman Falls if you're a strong swimmer.

The pool is 20 metres deep and fairly wide. Furthermore, the creek flows gently out of the pool in normal conditions, so there is little risk (this can definitely change following downpours). Though, I certainly wouldn't want to swim too close to it. However, the force of the 268-metre giant is probably enough to push you back to the edges of the pool quite quickly.

Getting to the waterfall pool requires a bit of slippery rock scrambling. Don't underestimate just how slippery the rocks are!

Camping Near Wallamans Waterfall in Far North Queensland

There is a designated campsite just a few hundred metres further down Wallaman Falls Road, past the Lookout Road. Again, you can get here with a regular 2WD vehicle.

Unfortunately, Caravans aren't permitted as it's a tent-only site. A camping permit is required to stay here. You can find all the information about the Wallaman Falls campsite on the QLD Parks website.

Hartleys Creek Falls is a cascading waterfall located at the end of a gentle walking track near Wangetti, north of Cairns.

Are you looking for a quick waterfall hike and adventure near the Northern Beaches of Cairns? Hartleys Creek Falls might be precisely what you’re after.

This waterfall is somewhat of a “local secret”, hidden at the back of Wangetti near the well-known Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures. Don’t worry though; there aren’t any crocs lurking at Hartleys Creek Falls, so you’re free to swim and cool off at the waterfall after the short but rewarding hike.

Where is the Hartleys Creek Falls Track?

Hartleys Creek Falls is located in Wangetti, just off the Captain Cook Highway, only 15 km from Palm Cove or 43 km from Cairns. Hartley’s Creek Falls is accessible by a broad and easy walking track found just off the highway.

How to Get to the Hartley’s Creek Trailhead

To get to the Hartleys Creek Falls trailhead from Cairns, you’ll simply need to head north on the Captain Cook Highway towards Wangetti. If you’re driving from Cairns, expect at least a 40-minute drive.

The Hartleys Creek Falls trailhead access is located just 500 metres past Hartleys Crocodile Adventures, near the “Hartleys Creek Retreat”. If you’re using google maps, just type in “Hartleys Creek Retreat”, and you’ll arrive just next to the trailhead.

There is a large clearing in front of the retreat where you can park your car. The trailhead access is just to the left of the front gate to the retreat and is signposted.

About Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures

Hartley’s Creek in Wangetti is famous for the popular crocodile park known as Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures. This is one of the first places in Australia to breed crocs in captivity and their work on crocodile conservation has attracted worldwide interest for over 20 years.

This is a great stop if you’re planning a drive from Cairns to Port Douglas, Mossman, or the Daintree and want to see some salties!

Hiking The Hartleys Creek Falls Track

 • Hike Distance: 7.5 km (return)
 • Duration: Roughly 1 hour each way
 • Elevation: 290 m total gain (undulating)
 • Difficulty: Easy

Once you’ve found the trailhead using the information above, the rest is fairly straightforward. Begin by passing the fenced-off retreat and commence on a gentle climb for approximately 1.5 km.

The track is wide and easy to follow, undulating sporadically through the native scrub. The length of the trail follows the banks of Hartleys Creek all the way to the waterfall without needing to make any turns.

While there are some dips and steep sections, overall, the Hartleys Creek Falls track is very gentle and can be completed by anyone with an average level of fitness.

At roughly the halfway point, you’ll arrive at a clearing with access to a waterhole section of Hartleys Creek. Although it looks like a great camping spot, it’s unfortunately not permitted. However, if you’d like a quick dip, then this spot is perfect and makes for a very scenic rest stop.

After roughly 3.5 KM, you’ll arrive at the rocky banks leading to the waterfall. Turn left here and follow the sign to arrive at Hartleys Creek Falls.

What to Expect at Hartleys Creek Waterfall and Swimming Hole

 • Waterfall height: 16 metres (estimate)
 • Pool depth: At least 3 metres in the deep sections

As soon as you arrive at Hartleys Creek Falls, you can see why it’s such a local-favourite. It’s easily accessible, the hike is enjoyable and rewarding without being too difficult and the swimming hole is perfect!

The waterfall itself cascades gently down the steep rock face for approximately 16 metres (my estimate) into a vast freshwater basin. The pool underneath the falls makes for the perfect swimming hole on a scalding, tropical summer day.

HARTLEYS CREEK FALLS

It’s possible to climb up the lower boulder beneath the waterfall and jump into the deep pool below. It’s difficult to tell how deep it is, but I couldn’t reach the bottom after jumping off around the edge of the waterfall.

After passing the crocodile attraction just up the road, it’s difficult to the thought of crocs to the back of your mind. However, rest assured there are no crocs here (at least there hasn’t ever been a sighting).

Useful information and my detailed experience hiking to Wankaroo Falls in Wooroonooran National Park, Far North Queensland Australia.

Wankaroo Falls is a roughly 35-metre single-plunge waterfall flowing on Wankaroo Creek in Wooroonooran National Park, Far North Queensland, Australia.

This waterfall is one of my personal favorite waterfalls in the Cairns region and one worth checking out if you’ve already visited some of the more popular waterfalls in Wooroonooran National Park.

Travel tip: By far, the best islands for snorkeling in Cairns are the Frankland Islands (pristine reef). There is only one boat trip allowed to stop on these islands and you can book this directly with BackpackerDeals + use code OLLY5 to get $5 off.

About the Wankaroo Falls Hike

Wankaroo Falls isn't listed in any hiking guidebooks or tourist information sheets. It's very much a hidden gem, and a waterfall you'll likely have all to yourself if you make the effort to find it.

First of all, my intent for posting this waterfall hiking guide isn’t to popularise Wankaroo Falls. My goal is to help people who are already interested in trying to find this waterfall and do so safely. There are dozens of other waterfalls in Far North Queensland that are much easier to find and require much less effort.

I find it quite sad seeing some members of the online Cairns hiking communities complaining about passionate hikers sharing information about some of these more hidden waterfalls. After hiking this trail myself, I've even noticed that some of the pink ribbons have been purposely ripped off the trees, which is very irresponsible and potentially dangerous.

I find that most of the time, this is motivated by these people trying to force an agenda of “exclusivity”, perhaps to elevate their ego or somehow contain nature trails within their own cliques and walking groups. The Wet Tropics have been here for millions of years before all of us and is there for everyone to enjoy, respect and preserve.

The more people who get to experience its brilliance, the louder the voice of conservation grows.

How to Get to the Wankaroo Falls Trailhead

With that quick foreword out of the way, let's help you get to the Wankaroo Falls trailhead.

The start point is located near the Golden Hole, quite close to Josephine Falls and the Mount Bartle Frere eastern approach trailhead. The Golden Hole is just by the Biggs Recreational Reserve, where you will find a large car park, toilets, and a wide grass clearing for camping. Expect a roughly 1-hour drive from Cairns.

Once you've left your car at the car park, walk past the toilet block, across the grassy field towards the large black boulders. There are no signs or trailhead markings indicating the start of the trail. However, if you look closely into the rainforest in this area, you'll soon see a very obvious trail clearing indicating the start of the Wankaroo Falls hiking trail.

The Wankaroo Falls Hike

 • Hiking Distance: 13.2 kilometers (return)
 • Duration: 4-5 hours return
 • Elevation: ~400 meters total incline (undulating)
 • Difficulty: Medium

The Wankaroo Falls trail briefly follows the Russel River upstream before diverting into dense rainforest, crossing many small freshwater creeks along the way. Hikers will enjoy a mostly flat trail for the majority of the walk, with short sections of undulation resulting in the majority of the overall elevation gain.

Wankaroo Falls hike in Cairns

This trail follows a low section of the Wooroonooran National Park beneath Queensland's tallest mountains and runs beside a major river arterial. As a result, the Wankaroo Falls hike can be very wet and muddy. So, I'd definitely suggest it as a dry season hike.

Additionally, the track is quite easy to follow and was recently cleared when I set out to find the falls. There were some pink ribbons when I hiked in August 2022 but these were sporadic and often led off the main trail for short side walks to the Russel River. As I mentioned above, it seems also that somebody has intentionally tried to remove these and potentially confuse hikers by moving them off the main track– disappointing...

Wankaroo Falls hiking trail, Queensland

I recommend planning ahead and knowing the GPS coordinates beforehand because I ended up diverting off the Wankaroo Falls trail and continuing on for several kilometers until I realized that I had gone too far. There is also very little reception as you get into the scrub.

Below I'll give you a more detailed breakdown of what to expect when hiking the Wankaroo Falls waterfall trail in Far North Queensland.

Wankaroo Falls drone

Starting the Wankaroo Falls Hike

After just 500 meters you'll come to the first fork in the trail. To the left, there is a side trail leading down to a deep section of the Russel River which looks nice for swimming and camping. However, there have been crocodile sightings in the Golden Gole, so I was wary.

This is a very short side trip, which loops back to the main trail. If you want to avoid it and head straight to the falls, continue straight rather than turning left.

Russel River Access - side trail

Second Russel River Access

Following the trail for another two kilometres and you'll come to a second river access point. This is another very short detour leading down a slope to the water. Undeniably, the Russel River is very beautiful, with a rich shade of emerald or even deep blue depending on the cloud cover.

We hiked down to the river to take some snaps and then headed straight up the hill toward Wankaroo Falls.

Creek Crossings

The rest of the trail leading to Wankaroo Falls is very scenic and features several small creek crossings. When I hiked the trail in the dry season it was possible to avoid wet shoes by rock hopping over the majority of these shallow streams. I'd imagine these could be quite dangerous in the wet season.

Continuing on, the trail is easy to follow and carves through dense rainforest with a full canopy for the majority of the trail toward the falls. There's also plenty of wait-a-while on the trail so do your best to avoid it.

Descent to Wankaroo Creek

At the 5.5-kilometre mark (probably 5km if you didn't take any of the detours), you'll arrive at a very obvious fork with ribbons (well, hopefully) on your left-hand side. This begins the short but sharp descent down to Wankaroo Creek.

I'd split this descent into two sections. The first is a short burst down to a small rocky cascade which is quite picturesque. There's also another nice waterfall just further upstream of this one, which is larger. I reached it by climbing up the side of this waterfall.

Wankaroo Creek cascades

However, to get to Wankaroo Falls, don't do this. Instead, you'll want to turn to the left (downstream) right as you get to the base of the first cascade on Wankaroo Creek. I missed this on my attempt and ended up hiking back up and continuing on (don't do this).

Pink ribbon to mark the hiking trail to Wankaroo Falls

Instead, follow the ribbons hidden to your left further downstream of Wankaroo Creek for approximately 500 meters or so. This will lead you to the top of the waterfall– a sharp drop-off of at least 35 meters.

Wankaroo Creek

The second section of the descent to the base of Wankaroo Falls is the most difficult part of the hike but I'd say very manageable for anybody who's set out to explore this deep section of the Wooroonooran.

Wankaroo Falls - What to Expect

The waterfall itself is very picturesque, with a single, thin, plunging stream falling into a very deep, round basin pool. In photos, it looks very similar to the nearby Nandroya Falls.

The pool is very deep, especially in the middle. Swimming up to the falls, you'll also see a small cave behind it, which makes for some impressive photos and a great spot to admire this incredible Woooroonooran waterfall.

Having spent a fair bit of time off-course, we spent about an hour or so at the waterfall, swimming and snapping some photos.

The Return

The return doubles back on the same route as the initial walk-in. Overall, it took us about 6 hours to find the falls with a significant amount of time walking off course. Without this, I'd say the hike would have taken us about 4 hours for the return at a leisurely pace.

A complete waterfall guide to visiting Josephine Falls, one of the most pristine swimming holes near Cairns in Far North Queensland. Find out how to get here, what to expect and how to make the most of your trip to this epic gem in the Wooroonooran National Park.

Josephine Falls is a scenic rainforest waterfall flowing on Josephine Creek, a stunning rainforest water source within the Wooroonooran National Park in Far North Queensland.

This scenic waterfall boasts three main falls and is a popular picnic area and swimming spot complete with a natural water slide at the base of the falls.

Girl walking at Josephine Falls

In this quick waterfall guide, I aim to answer all of your questions about visiting Josephine Falls from Cairns and the surrounding region.

I'll explain how to get here, what to expect on the short walking trails and include photos that I hope will inspire your trip!

Josephine Falls main waterfall in Far North Queensland, Australia

Where is Josephine Falls?

Josephine Falls is located within the Wooroonooran National Park, approximately 1 hour (75 kilometres) south of Cairns in Tropical North Queensland.

It sits on Josephine Creek, which is close to other attractions like Nandroya Falls, and Babinda Boulders.

Below is the correct google maps pin for the car park providing access to the falls.

The waterfall is fed by the rain captured by Queensland's tallest mountain, Mount Bartle Frere, which rises to 1622 metres above the waterfall and is a great overnight trip for keen hikers.

In fact, Josephine Falls shares the same car park as the Bartle Frere trailhead, as well as the nearby Broken Nose.

How to Get to Josephine Falls (Self-Drive Option)

The journey to Josephine Falls is 75 kilometers southwest of Cairns on the Bruce Highway. To get here, head towards "Bartle Frere", turning off on Bartle Frere Road. There are signs on Bartle Frere Road indicating the direction to Josephine Falls.

Follow this road to the end and keep going when it forks to the left (now Price Road).

Next, continue on this road as it cuts through the cane and banana plantations and turn right when you see the signs for the waterfall car park (Josephine Falls Road). Alternatively, if you turn left here, you will arrive at the Golden Hole and the trailhead to the little-known Wankaroo Falls.

It should take roughly one hour to reach the car park to Josephine Falls from Cairns.

The car park is very large and accommodates roughly 25 vehicles. Since this waterfall is one of the most popular swimming holes south of Cairns, you can expect it to be quite busy.

At the car park, you'll also find several facilities, including a shelter, toilets, picnic tables and coin-operated BBQs.

The Josephine Falls Walk

 • Hiking Distance: 1.2 km return
 • Duration: 25 minutes

 • Difficulty: Very easy

Once you reach the car park, it's only a short walk for 600 metres on a sealed rainforest track separating you from the waterfall. The Josephine Falls walk is a beautiful spot to enjoy the tropical rainforest and is great for all ages with wheelchair access.

The track follows sealed bitumen all the way up to the main waterfall, with turn-offs to the Middle Creek viewing platform and the bottom pool. Just below is a map showing the Josephine Falls track for a better idea of the swimming hole and viewing platform locations.

By no means do you need this to get to the waterfall, I've just included it as it's useful to get an understanding of the different spots to check out at Josephine Falls.

What to Expect at Josephine Falls

Apart from the famous Crystal Cascades or Barron Falls, Josephine Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in the region!

Josephine Falls is a series of cascading waterfalls with 3 main drops. Each waterfall has a deep pool with crystal clear waters. However, due to flash flooding resulting in very sudden increases in water levels following heavy rain, there is only one large swimming hole serving as the designated area to take a dip.

Please be respectful when visiting Josephine Falls and the Bartle Frere area of the Wet Tropics national parks. This is and always will be noongyanbudda ngadjon land. Local aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander peoples share a close spiritual connection to this region.

Top Pool & Waterfall

The largest waterfall at Josephine Falls is at the end of the track and visitors can admire it from a wide wooden platform named "top viewing platform".

While not the tallest waterfall in the area, the main waterfall is still an impressive sight. It drops 25 metres down a sharp gully before spilling over a large, wide boulder.

Due to safety reasons, swimming at the largest waterfall is forbidden as this entire pooled area is classified as restricted. But don't stress, there are plenty of great swimming holes at Josephine Falls, just a little earlier on the track (closer to the car park)

A little before the main waterfall, there is a sign indicating access to the river. This is known as the Big Pool, and is where you will find the best Josephine Falls swimming holes and even a rock slide!

On the side, there is a small cascading waterfall flowing gently into a deep pool.

This main pool is a dreamy shade of aquatic green and is deep enough to swim in (at least 1.5 metres deep). There's also a natural rock slide here which is a fun little bonus!

This area is my favourite to hang out and in my opinion, is the best place to enjoy a swim in the beautiful tropical rainforest surroundings.

Deaths in Dangerous Flow At this Waterfall

In the wet season, the flow can get very unpredictable. Unfortunately, there have been several deaths at this waterfall due to submerged rocks and dangerous currents.

There are several warning signs and river depth alarms, so it's best to be cautious. If you're concerned, you can check current warnings for all parks here. I've visited Josephine Falls countless times now on trips south of Cairns and I've yet to see it in full force. However, even in the Dry Season the waterfall, especially the top tier, generally has a decently powerful flow.

I would only ever consider swimming here if conditions allow. Depending on the time of the year, this place can be a gentle trickle or a relentless rapid.

Tchupala Falls and Wallicher Falls are two waterfalls located in the tropical Wooroonooran National Park in Far North Queensland, Australia.

Although they’re not as popular as other waterfalls in the area like Josephine Falls or Nandroya Falls, they offer bang-for-buck for the adventure lover, who’ll get two waterfalls on the same short, scenic rainforest hike!

Travel tip: By far, the best islands for snorkeling in Cairns are the Frankland Islands (pristine reef). There is only one boat trip allowed to stop on these islands and you can book this directly with BackpackerDeals + use code OLLY5 to get $5 off.

About Wallicher Falls and Tchupala Falls

Wallicher Falls (also spelled Wallacha) and Tchupala Falls are located quite close together and are both fed from Henrietta Creek. These falls share the same trailhead, which splits in a Y-junction near the start of the trail.

While not the most popular waterfalls in the Cairns region, they are certainly very beautiful. The rainforest trail is also very scenic, and you'll likely have both of these falls to yourself!

How to Get to Tchupala Falls and Wallicher Falls

To get to these epic waterfalls, you'll need your own car. While there are several guided tours (above) that run tours from Cairns to Wooroonooran National Park and the surrounding waterfalls, I don't know any that visit these particular waterfalls.

Expect a roughly 1.5-hour drive from Cairns, following the Palmerstone Highway through the Wooroonooran National Park on the way to Millaa Millaa and the Atherton Tablelands.

You'll want to continue into the Palmerston (Doongan) area, passing the popular Mamu Tropical Skywalk and Crawfords Lookout. If you keep your eyes peeled to the right side of the road, you'll notice a small sign that points to the hike and waterfalls. Additionally, there's a small pull-over space here to park your car.

If you make it to the Henrietta Creek Camp Ground (the start of the Nandroya Falls hike), then you've come too far. Head back roughly 2.5 kilometers and you'll see the sign.

Below you'll find the pin for the location of the trailhead. Again, it's very easy to miss and mobile reception isn't too great in the area. I'd suggest configuring the route to Tchupala Falls and Wallicher Falls before you get too far into the National Park.

You can also download a map of the surrounding area to help you orientate yourself for the waterfall hikes.

Hiking Trail to Wallicher Falls and Tchupala Falls

Once you park your car, you'll notice a trailhead sign indicating the start of the track.

Both waterfall tracks branch off the same starting trail, with Wallicher Falls to the left, and Tchupala to the right after approximately 100 meters.

Tchupala Falls Track - What to Expect

If you only have time for one waterfall, then I'd probably recommend Tchupala Falls. We found this waterfall trail by chance for the first time in 2018 after exploring nearby Nandroya Falls and we were completely blown away. My personal favorite was Tchupala Falls, but considering the close distance, you may as well check both out!

The track winds right after the turn, following a trail through dense tropical rainforest and up a steep ridge. After approximately 600 metres, you'll reach the top level of Tchupala Falls, which is a wide rainforest waterfall fed by Henrietta Creek.

The Closed Waterfall Trail

Tchupala Falls actually has three major levels, each as incredible as the last. Unfortunately though, due to the devastating power of the waterfalls in the wet season, the path is now closed.

There are several signs telling travelers not to continue down to the lower levels, however, after reviewing the conditions, we decided to explore anyway.

The trails were completely abandoned, and it seemed they had been like that for years. The old rails are now covered by thick vines and the carved rock steps are swallowed by dirt and moss.

Tchupala Falls - The Lower Tiers

The track down to the lower waterfall levels was very slippery and steep. However, after reaching the bottom, we took time to admire the sheer power and beauty of the place. There were waterfalls on each side and steep limestone cliffs covered in thick vines and rainforest flora.

I am in no way encouraging anybody to hike on closed trails. The flowing rivers can be extremely unpredictable and dangerous. You'll need to take extreme caution and make your own judgments.

The Wallicher Falls Track - What to Expect

If you have time, then it's also worth checking out Wallicher Falls on the same track. Instead of turning right at the first fork, turn left and continue on for about 1 kilometer. Soon, you'll reach a lookout point where you'll get great views of the powerful Wallicher Falls.

Unlike Tchupala Falls, Wallicher Falls is only a single-level waterfall. However, it's still very impressive and I would imagine it to have some serious power in the wet, rainy season.

If you want a closer view, then you can walk down the steep track just in front of the viewing platform.

From Wallicher Falls, you can continue hiking all the way around to Gooligans Picnic Area and Henrietta Creek Campground.

A quick guide covering four awesome waterfalls in Minca, Santa Marta, Colombia. Discover some of the famous icons, as well as two hidden gems you might not have heard about!

Looking for a quick list of awesome waterfalls in Minca? I’ve got you covered. In this guide, I’ll outline the top four waterfalls, cascades, and freshwater swimming spots to help you plan your adventures in this beautiful mountain village.

I’ve also written independent travel guides to these waterfalls, which you’ll find if you click the links under each heading.

Read: 21 Awesome Things to do in Minca

The Best Experiences in Minca

Before I get into this guide, here’s a rundown of my favorite tours and experiences in Minca.

 • Ciudad Perdida Trek – Perhaps the most fulfilling trekking experience in Colombia. Trek to “The Lost City” in the Sierra Nevada, an archaeological site built some 650 years before even Machu Picchu!
 • Birdwatching Tour – Minca is world-famous for its wildlife, especially its birds. Let a local show you the best spots to photograph and spot beautiful tropical birds like toucans and hummingbirds.
 • Minca Full Day Tour – The best-rated tour in town which covers all the highlights in one day. Includes waterfalls and cacao plantation tours.

4 Awesome Waterfalls in Minca

1. Pozo Azul

Pozo Azul is one of the most popular waterfalls in Minca and features two small but beautiful cascades nestled in dense jungle surrounds. The bottom falls has a large but shallow natural swimming pool that is a favorite spot for Colombian tourists and day trippers.

However, if you continue upstream a little, you’ll find a more secluded upper tier, which even has a fun little cliff jump.

If you’re going to visit Pozo Azul, then you don’t need a tour guide. Simply hike up the road from town, or pay a motorbike taxi driver 10,000 to take you to the entrance. From here, it’s just a short walk down to Pozo Azul.

This is a great place to swim and take in the beautiful natural surrounds in the forested foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. However, try to avoid visiting this waterfall during busy periods like weekends or public holidays. Instead, the best time to visit Pozo Azul is early in the morning, or at lunch time when many of the tour groups leave.

Second waterfall at Pozo Azul

Tip: Minca is an adventure playground! If you’re planning to rent motorbikes or go hiking, then make sure you have travel insurance for adventurers. The best option currently is WorldNomads, which cater to young adventure travelers.

2. Marinka Waterfalls

The Marinka Waterfalls, or Cascada de Marinka is another beautiful set of waterfalls near Minca town. Here, you’ll discover two larger waterfalls separated by a short hike. My favorite place is the the lower falls, which offers a wide, natural basin to swim in.

There’s also a restaurant on-site which has an iconic giant hammock offering great views over the cascades.

Again, you can either walk here from the small town of Minca (one-hour walk), or take a motorcycle taxi. In my opinion, the best way to visit Marinka falls is to hike here in the early morning to have it all to yourself.

Also, if you’re up for a quick adventure, you can also combine a visit to is beautiful waterfall with a hike up to Los Pinos. Along the way, you’ll pass a cacao, banana, and coffee plantation where you can also get coffee tours from.

3. Cascada Escondida (THe Hidden Waterfall in Minca)

Looking for a more secluded place to swim and enjoy the gentle mountain streams of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta? Make sure to check out Cascada Escondida. This is a very little known waterfall hidden amongst dense forests near the small village adjacent to Pozo Azul.

You’ll find the short 5 minute trail down to this waterfall just after a bend on the road adjacent to “Panaderia Alto de la Montana”. While you won’t see a signpost here, simply continue down the trail on the left side of the building.

When we visited a kind old man selling his art next door pointed us in the right direction. Once you reach the river, cross it, turn left, and you’ll see the “Hidden Waterfall of Minca”, on your right.

Unfortunately, it seems that the upper level, which has the deepest pool, is not off-limits. I’m not sure what the thought process was here. But regardless, it’s a nice waterfall, and one you’ll get to enjoy all to yourself!

Cascada Esccondida in Minca, Colombia

4. Oído del Mundo (Ear of the World)

Now for the fourth and final Minca waterfall, the Oído del Mundo, or “Ear of the World” falls.

Similarly to Cascada Escondida above, the Ear of the World is very much a hidden gem. There aren’t any signposts leading to it, and as a result, you won’t find hoards of tourists here either.

Instead, at the Ear of the World, you’ll discover a set of small, multi-tiered waterfalls plunging into a deep but shallow pool. What’s cool about this one is that you can climb up on the rocks on the right. From here, you’ll get access to the middle pool, which is a great place to cool off. Here, you’ll also discover why it’s called the “Ear of the World”.

Conveniently, Oído del Mundo Waterfall is located just a short walk from the centre of Minca. In fact, it’s found on the same dirt roads leading to the Marinka Waterfalls, which means you can visit both on the same trip!

Tip: Keep your eye out for exotic birds when hiking in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta! This region is very rich in biodiversity and a great place to do some bird watching.

Where to Stay in Minca

The main town of Minca is quite small, and you’ll discover that some of the best places to stay are on the jungle foothills of the surrounding mountains.

While everybody knows about the famous Sierra Minca, there are several other great places to consider as well. Minca has some of the best hostels in South America, and the unmissable ones sell out frequently, so it’s best to book in advance!

 • Stay at an Organic Cacao & Coffee Farm: Finca San Rafael – This is where I stayed, and it was one of my favorite lodges in all of Colombia. Set in the jungle just outside of town, this beautiful oasis offers a pool with mountain views, private or shared rooms, and offers plantation tours to learn about the cultivation process of cacao and coffee.
 • Finca Carpe Diem Ecolodge – 9.6/10 rating on HostelWorld with over 800 reviews! This is an absolute backpacker heaven with 3 swimming pools, amazing jungle views, and is well-located close to amazing hikes.
 • Casas Viejas – Winner of the best hostel award in South America! Unfortunately, this place was booked out when we visited but many claim that this is one of the best hostels in the world!
 • Reserva Natural Tierra Adentro – The best place to stay near Minca for couples and those wanting absolute serenity. Offers amazing private rooms with a river view in the jungle, an incredible breakfast, and is actually very affordable for what you get!

Minca Waterfall Packing List

Here’s a quick list of things to bring on your waterfall chasing adventures in Minca.

 • Bug repellent – seriously, this is crucial, the sand flies are ruthless in Minca. I’ve stopped using deet and now swear by the natural alternative from Sallye Ander
 • Bug cream – something to treat the inevitable bites. Again, the Sallye Ander cream helps reduce itching.
 • Hat and sunscreen – many of the hiking trails are shaded, but you will be exposed to the sun a lot in Minca. I’m Aussie so I might be biased, but Blue Lizard makes the best natural sunscreen on earth.
 • Grayl water purifier – I swear by this water purifying bottle. I’ve used it all over the world (including tap water in India), and saved thousands of plastic bottles from landfill in the process.
 • Hiking shoes and clothes – make sure to pack the outdoor clothes!
 • A lightweight rain jacket – while the coast around Santa Marta is dry, the Sierra Nevada mountains around Minca get a lot of rain.
 • Camera or GoPro – this mountain village is beautiful and totally safe to have your camera out! Read my guide to camera gear for travel for suggestions.
 • Warm clothes – the cooler climate in Minca can result in some chilly nights, especially if you head further into the mountains to Cerro Kennedy.
 • Travel quick-dry towel – a must have travel essential
 • Imodium – trust me, you might want to bring some
 • Head lamp or flashlight – great for those return sunset hikes or when the power goes out.

About The Ear of the World Waterfall

The Ear of the World waterfall, or Oído del Mundo in Spanish, is a small, two-tiered waterfall located in the jungles of Minca.

The truth is, while this is one of the closest freshwater swimming spots to town, it's usually completely deserted!

This means this is the perfect spot to chill, unwind, and cool off, and you can walk here easily from the main tourist strip.

First: Unmissable Experiences in Minca

Before I get into this guide, here's a rundown of my favorite tours and experiences in Minca.

 • Ciudad Perdida Trek - Perhaps the most fulfilling trekking experience in Colombia. Trek to "The Lost City" in the Sierra Nevada, an archaeological site built some 650 years before even Machu Picchu!
 • Birdwatching Tour - Minca is world-famous for its wildlife, especially its birds. Let a local show you the best spots to photograph and spot beautiful tropical birds like toucans and hummingbirds.
 • Minca Full Day Tour - The best-rated tour in town which covers all the highlights in one day. Includes waterfalls and cacao plantation tours.

Where is the Ear of the World Waterfall in Minca?

This Minca waterfall is located just 1 mile (1.7 km) from the white church in the center of Minca. You'll find it at the end of a very short jungle trail that darts into the forest off "Cerro Kennedy Oriente", which is the same road leading to the Marinka Waterfalls.

 • Google Maps Pin: "Cascada Oido del Mundo, Minca Sierra Nevada"

Although this waterfall isn't well-signed, it is easy to find if you know where to look. The above Google maps pin is updated and accurate and will lead you directly to the waterfall.

How to Get To this Minca Waterfall

To get to this waterfall, you'll first have to make your way to Minca. The easiest way to get here is to take the colectivo from the main square in Santa Marta. This costs 9,000 Colombian Pesos and takes roughly 45 minutes. Otherwise, a taxi costs between 40,000 and 70,000.

Once you arrive in Minca, or if you're already here, you'll now have two options to get to the Ear of the World waterfall.

Option 1: Hike from town

This is going to be the easiest option. And, since it's very close, it's also the best in my opinion. Simple head down the main restaurant street in Minca (the one with the white church), and continue all the way down the end (the same road leading to Marinka Falls).

Unsealed dirt road in the jungle
The unsealed road from Minca

Follow this road for approximately 1 mile, and you'll soon arrive at the pin above. There's only one fork along the road, just simply stick to the left and you can't get lost. You will see a sign once you arrive, but it doesn't mention the name. Next, simply continue down this short track for a few hundred feet and you'll arrive at the base of the waterfall.

Turn right here to get to the falls

All up, it takes roughly 25 minutes to walk to Cascada Oido del Mundo from Minca.

Option 2: Motorbike Taxi

If you're feeling extra lazy, then you can also take a motorbike taxi from town to this waterfall. This shouldn't take more than 10 minutes and costs roughly 10,000 pesos for the trip.

The motorbike taxi guys in Minca are called "MotoMink", and you'll find them just near the yellow bridge near the Colectivo stop.

What To Expect at Oído del Mundo Cascades

After following the short jungle trail down to the base of the falls, we arrived at the beautiful Ear of the World cascades.

The falls are found on a gentle creek with beautiful rainforest and bamboo surrounds. Although this waterfall is much smaller than some of the others in Minca, it's the quiet and relaxing charm that really makes this one special.

The waterfall itself is split in two equally-sized tiers, which plunge gently into a wide, shallow pool at its base. Although the water level is a little shallow, you can climb up on the rocks to the right of the waterfall to swim in a relaxing pool between the two levels.

From this point, you'll realize why locals call this waterfall the Ear of the World. The smooth, water-eroded rocks form a spiraling pattern that looks exactly like a human ear!

We visited this waterfall quite early in the morning and there were no other tourists swimming here. If you're planning a visit, I highly recommend combining it with a trip to Marinka Waterfalls and even a longer hike up to the Los Pinos viewpoint.

The small town of Minca near Santa Marta is situated in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and offers plenty of amazing hikes, beautiful waterfalls, and world-renowned nature experiences.

One of the absolute best things to do here is to visit the Marinka Waterfalls. These are two sets of large jungle cascades situated amidst beautiful forest and offering a deep swimming pool, an onsite cafe, and a few giant hammocks.

In this guide, I’ll outline everything you need to know about visiting Marinka falls in Minca, Colombia. I’ll include details on how to get here (2 options), what to expect when you arrive, and of course, some photos from my trip.

About Marinka Waterfalls in Minca, Colombia

Although often overshadowed by the very popular Pozo Azul swimming hole, the Marinka Waterfalls are much more beautiful and far less busy!

Here, you'll discover two large cascades set in a dense, green forest, with the opportunity to swim in a deep freshwater pool. There is also a cafe/restaurant on-site, and some huge net hammocks overlooking the lower cascade.

These cascades are referred to in Spanish as "Cascada de Marinka".

As you'll find out, you can also combine a visit to Marinka falls with other waterfalls and other notable viewpoints in the area, making for an awesome day trip from town!

Tip: You don't need a tour guide to visit these waterfalls.

Where is Marinka Waterfall?

These jungle cascades are located approximately 3.6 kilometers from the town of Minca in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. You'll find it at the end of a dirt road, which begins at a turn-off on "Cerro Kennedy Oriente" leading from the pueblo.

Google Maps Pin: Marinka Waterfalls, Arimaca, Santa Marta, Magdelana

The Marinka Waterfalls are well-marked on Google Maps and finding the location is very easy from town. Below is a convenient map with the correct and up-to-date location. However I've also included more detailed information on how to get here below.

How to get to Marinka Falls

Since these waterfalls are located near Minca, the first step is getting to this town. From Santa Marta, you can take a taxi which costs 40,000 - 70,000 pesos. Alternatively, there is a shared bus (colectivo) running daily from the main square in Santa Marta for 9,000 pesos per person.

If you're already in Minca, you now have two options to get to the Marinka Waterfalls.

Option 1: Hike to Marinka Waterfalls from Minca

The first option is to simply walk the 3.6-kilometer road from town. This is a pleasant, roughly 1-hour walk, following a shaded and unsealed road called "Cerro Kennedy Oriente". This begins at the end of the main strip (past the church).

This road is easy to follow and climbs gently. Along the way (roughly halfway), you'll pass a small trail with an inconspicuous sign on the right-hand side. This leads down a short 100-meter dirt track to another waterfall called "Oido del Mundo", or Ear of the World. This is another beautiful 2-tier waterfall and swimming spot worth checking out on the way!

Soon, you will arrive at a small dirt-road turn-off next to a large MotoMink sign and a restaurant/lodge called "Villa Verde Colombia". Turn left here and take the short hike up the slightly steep dirt track for about 10 minutes.

Hiking in Minca, Colombia

On the way, you'll pass a few small cafes and strangely, an artificial rock-climbing setup that looks like it's abandoned.

This is the cheapest way to visit the waterfalls since it doesn't cost anything!

Soon, you'll arrive at the entrance to a complex where you will pay the entrance fee.

Option 2: Moto taxi from Minca

If you're feeling lazy, you can take a motorbike taxi from the centre of Minca. The drivers are located near the yellow bridge in town and their business is called MotoMink. They weill take you as far as the dirt road at the fork above.

This costs 10,000 pesos per person each way.

Note you will still need to walk the last 10 minutes to the waterfalls from the main road.

What to Expect at Marinka Waterfall

Entrance Fee: 10,000 Colombian Pesos

Upon arriving, I immediately noticed that these waterfalls had some serious tourism infrastructure, which isn't too common for waterfalls in South America.

At the entrance, the guard asks for the entrance fee, which seems to have gotten more expensive (it used to be 5,000).

From here, you'll take a short walk following a clean, concrete path passing some impressive net hammocks. These hammocks offer a very scenic view of the huge trees, dense forests, and the lower falls.

We stopped here for a few minutes and had a quick snack before heading down.

The First Waterfall

Passing the restaurant where you can get a cup of coffee or rest in more large net hammocks, turn left and you'll make your way down to the lower falls.

Walkway to the restaurant at Marinka Waterfalls

This is the most spectacular and is the best one for swimming as it has the deepest swimming hole at the base of the waterfall. I'd say at the deepest point the water is roughly 1.5 meters.

The falls are set amongst magnificent scenery and flow down rocky creeks with overhanging forests and vines. Furthermore, visitors will find a wooden boarded section near the edge of the swimming hole. This has some bench seats to sit and relax on as well.

The Second Waterfall

To reach the second Marinka Waterfall, you need to walk back up past the restaurant and up a short concrete path.

The second waterfall upstream is slightly larger than the first but finishes in a very shallow pool that is not great for swimming.

However, it's still a very impressive sight and great for photos. I climbed up on the rock face on the right-hand side to capture some unique angles of this beautiful Minca waterfall.

Is There a Third Waterfall?

When I visited, I noticed that there was an old sign indicating a way to "waterfall three". However, on the official map (which seems to be new), this wasn't included. The path was also closed off, and when we tried to go around, we were told by the restaurant staff not to.

Either way, I was happy to experience the two tiers of Marinka Waterfalls, spending roughly 2 hours here swimming and enjoying the beautiful and calm atmosphere.

Tip: Continue to Los Pinos & Sierra Minca

Looking to include these awesome waterfalls on a full-day hiking trip from Minca? This is exactly what we did, and I'd highly recommend following our route!

Once you leave the complex at Marinka Waterfalls, look for a rocky trail leading up the hill on the left-hand side. This is marked as "Reserva Natural Tierra Adentro".

This trail leads up through an amazing nature reserve (great for bird watching) and continues to climb up banana plantations and coffee farms to the famous Sierra Minca hostel, Casa Elemento viewpoint, and eventually, Los Pinos– an amazing viewpoint over Minca.

If you have time, you can even do coffee tours from the cacao and coffee plantation you'll walk through (another essential travel experience in Minca). These plantations are smaller and less commercialized than the popular Finca La Victoria.

Also, this route can be combined into a 2 or even 3-day journey on the way up to Cerro Kennedy (the best viewpoint in the region).

Where to Stay in Minca

The main town of Minca is quite small, and you'll discover that some of the best places to stay are on the jungle foothills of the surrounding mountains.

While everybody knows about the famous Sierra Minca, there are several other great places to consider as well. Minca has some of the best hostels in South America, and the unmissable ones sell out frequently, so it's best to book in advance!

 • Stay at an Organic Cacao & Coffee Farm: Finca San Rafael - This is where I stayed, and it was one of my favorite lodges in all of Colombia. Set in the jungle just outside of town, this beautiful oasis offers a pool with mountain views, private or shared rooms, and offers plantation tours to learn about the cultivation process of cacao and coffee.
 • Finca Carpe Diem Ecolodge - 9.6/10 rating on HostelWorld with over 800 reviews! This is an absolute backpacker heaven with 3 swimming pools, amazing jungle views, and is well-located close to amazing hikes.
 • Casas Viejas - Winner of the best hostel award in South America! Unfortunately, this place was booked out when we visited but many claim that this is one of the best hostels in the world!
 • Reserva Natural Tierra Adentro - The best place to stay near Minca for couples and those wanting absolute serenity. Offers amazing private rooms with a river view in the jungle, an incredible breakfast, and is actually very affordable for what you get!

A complete guide to visiting Pozo Azul waterfall in Minca, Colombia.

Pozo Azul is a series of two natural waterfalls and freshwater swimming holes in the town of Minca Santa Marta, Colombia.

These waterfalls are located just outside of the town and make for a perfect spot to cool off in the beautiful jungle surrounds at the feet of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains.

In this quick travel guide, I’ll give you an updated account on how to get to Pozo Azul, what to expect, and a few tips for making the most of your visit.

Where is Pozo Azul Waterfall?

Pozo Azul waterfall is located at the end of a short trail (roughly 20 minutes), which begins just off the side of a road called Cienaga-Minca. This is approximately 2.1 kilometers from the town.

The starting point is actually a small restaurant called "Cafébar mis ojitos", where you'll often find loads of tour buses and vans (more on this later).

Below I've pinned the exact location of the trailhead, as well as a basic map of Minca to get yourself orientated.

How to Get to Pozo Azul From Minca

To get to Pozo Azul, you have two options. You can walk from town, or take a motorbike taxi to the restaurant pinned above.

Option 1: Walk

We chose to simply walk from the center of Minca town, which took us roughly 45 minutes. The road isn't too long, but it's also quite uninteresting. However, to make up for it, we decided to stop at "Cascada Escondido" on the way.

If you choose to walk, just follow the main road (Calle 1a, or Vía Minca) east from town (opposite way from Santa Marta). The road winds a little as it makes its way up the hill. Just keep an eye out for motorbikes and trucks that also share this road.

Option 2: Moto Taxi from Minca

Those of you who want to avoid walking, you can also take a moto taxi from Minca to Pozo Azul. If you're in the heart of Minca, you'll find a large group of these guys just after the bridge in an undercover area.

The price to get to Pozo Azul is 10,000 Colombian pesos per person. These guys are very skilled riders, and getting a motorbike taxi is actually the most popular way to get here.

Visiting Pozo Azul - Everything You Need to Know

After making it to the restaurant at the start of the trail to Pozo Azul, you'll have the option of grabbing a quick coffee (3,000 pesos), or just heading straight down to the waterfall.

Tip: This is a very popular swimming spot among Colombians, who often come here on organized day trips from Santa Marta in vans and tour buses. I'd recommend getting here very early, or at 12:00 PM (when all the Colombians leave for an organized lunch). Alternatively, check out the Marinka Waterfalls and nearby "Ear of the World", which are just as beautiful and far less busy!

Entrance Fee

Visiting Pozo Azul is free. However, if you are taking a motorbike, you'll need to pay 3,000 pesos to park it, and 5,000 if you have a car.

The Hike to the Waterfall

Immediately to the left of the restaurant, you'll see a boom gate which serves as the entrance to the short hiking trail.

Again, you'll often find moto-taxi drivers at the top, offering to take you down all the way to the falls for 10,000 pesos. However, the walk itself is quite quick and generally very easy.

Follow this obvious dirt road and avoid any detours. There are signs at all the intersections stating "Propiedad Privada", so you really can't go off course.

Bamboo hiking trail, Colombia

The trail is also quite wide, with leafy jungle on all sides, offering shade and a comfortable walk. Additionally, there are sections with beautiful bamboo and a few snack shops along the way as well.

We arrived at approximately 11:30 AM and were shocked at just how many people were walking back up. I'm sure we passed over 100 Colombian tourists, and this wasn't even on a weekend! Remember, visit early or come around this time when everyone is leaving for lunch. If you can help it, avoid visiting Pozo Azul on weekends as well, especially if you want to avoid crowds.

The Two Waterfall Basins

After the short 20 minute hike, we arrived at Pozo Azul. This is actually a series of waterfall tiers that are perfect for swimming.

Jungle tree on a river in Minca, Colombia

The main waterfall tier is a large, freshwater basin with shallow water (around 1.2 meters in depth). This is a natural river formation (formación natural), with rocky outcrops on both sides.

The water is crystal clear and very refreshing. However, the actual waterfall itself is quite small at only about 2 meters in total height. We swam up to it and found the water was much deeper just under the falls. This was also a very refreshing spot to get a natural water massage!

Minca waterfall, Pozo Azul

With that said, in my opinion, the best swimming spot is just a little further up the hill. Take the steep, rocky trail on the left and you'll arrive at a smaller, but much deeper waterfall basin. This is a great spot for swimming and you'll often find much fewer people here.

Pozo Azul Cliff Jump

Yes, there's even a small little cliff jump at Pozo Azul! From the second waterfall tier, climb up the jungle vines on the left side and you'll arrive at the rocky jump spot.

The jump is only around 3.5 meters in total, but it was fun nonetheless! Just remember to always do a depth check as conditions can often change.

If you continue on even further upstream, past the second tier, you'll discover a beautiful shallow river in the jungle. If the main series of waterfalls are too busy, cooling off and relaxing up here is a good idea!
